Passage 1

Do you know how to be happy? Here are six ways for you to find more pleasure in your life.

Play that song you love so much. As we all know, repetition can lead to pleasure. When you experience something more than once, you notice more information about it each time, and it increases your enjoyment. That’s why you love revisiting that jazz club, the favorite restaurant, and the old Woody Allen movie. Of course, you can’t overdo it.

Don’t bu y boxed sets of DVDs. Economist(经济学家)Tyler says that much of the joy we get from buying things lies in the experience of choosing them, getting them home, and opening them up. If you receive 18 DVDs in one package, you’ll use up the excitement all at once. Buy things one at a time and pleasure follows.

Look outside. Our ancestors (祖先) spent almost all of their time outside with trees, water, and sky around. The world in which most of us spend our time nowadays is unnatural and can harm the spirit. Getting close to nature makes you happy.

_____. Staying with animals works wonders. You can pet an animal. It increases the brain chemicals connected with pleasure and decreases those connected with stress. People can get some of the effect by hanging out for a few minutes with pets.

Smile. Well, like it or not, smiling improves your mood(心情). Here’s why: when you look happy, people do better to you, which in turn leads you to be happy. What’s more, looking happy fools your brain into thinking that you are happy.

Passage 2

Robert had just moved into the street and he felt strange that he was not wanted. He knew that perhaps the other boys were trying to get an idea of what kind of a boy he was. This did not help him to make himself less lonely. He was new and he had to be tested. Still, proving himself would not be all that easy. He did not want to run with the boys or get into something against the law to prove that he was strong. No! He must show what he was made of in a more helpful way. That’s when he got the idea.

The next day was Saturday. He knew that most of the boys would be down on the playground and choose up sides for the Saturday game. Robert knew he could play well and that just might be enough to prove he was strong, and to make friends with them. He arrived early and did his step exercises. He shot the ball several times and did some other exercises—the most difficult and most wonderful in basketball. Then the boys came. Robert went through what he had done before the game and showed what he could do. No one said a word. The boys just looked at each other and thought about it. In the end, when it was all over, the biggest of the group just smiled and shook his head. Robert knew he had made it.

D. Because he must choose the best way to prove himself.

8. When did Robert decide to prove himself by playing basketball? _____

A. After he had thought about the other two ways mentioned in paragraph one.

B. Long before he moved into the street.

C. When the other boys came down to the playground.

America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while — then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later,

they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us flower more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, sometimes extending (延伸) deeply into both families.

Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their family life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality (好客) easily.

Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their everyday lives, they don’t show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time. Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides to our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes, but truly cannot manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily routine. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably.

For the Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to a restaurant, except for purely business situations. So accept their hospitality at home!

Passage 4

The other day I heard a few local musicians talking: “I hate all the terrible pianos in th is town. I hate that rubbish they play on the radio. They can’t even understand a bit of music.” “I’m never playing in that club again. Too many drunks and nobody listens to us.”

But, one younger musician said, “There are a few clubs that book my band a few nights a month, and I’m trying to find other places to play in. I’m also looking to book a few summer festivals this year.”

I’ve heard that you are the average of the five people whom you spend the most time with, or to put it another way, you are who your friends are.

Attitudes are important. Whether they’re positive or negative, they’re rubbing off on you. If you’re around

people who complain about lack of work and about other musicians, or blame (责怪) others, or play the role of victim (受害者), chances ar e you will start to as well. So it’s time to take a look at the people you call “friends”.

This is an easy exercise: Make a list of the people who you hang out with, and simply stop spending time with the negative people on your list. Set a new standard (标准) for yourself and don’t become friends with people who fall below that standard.

Keep successful people around you and your own chances for success will be much better. Ask them how they do it. Ask if they will help you get the work you’re looking for, o r maybe give you some advice to help you on your career path.

答案:1. C 2. A 3. D 4. B 5. C 6. C 7. D 8. A 9. B 10. A Passage 5

For many years, we have been led to believe that a person’s intellectual intelligence (measured as IQ, or intelligence quotient) is the greatest predictor of success. Society assumes that people with high IQs will naturally accomplish more in life. Schools often use IQ test results to choose children for gifted programs and advanced placement courses. Some companies even use the results as a criterion for hiring employees.

We have been conditioned to judge intelligence with these numbers. In the past 10 years, however, researchers have found that this isn’t necessa rily the case —that in actuality, a person’s emotional intelligence (EQ) might be a greater predictor of success than his or her IQ.

What is emotional intelligence? In the early 1990s, Dr. John Mayer, Ph.D., and Dr. Peter Salovey, Ph.D., introduced the te rm “emotional intelligence” in the Journal of Personality Assessment. They used this term to describe a person’s ability to understand his or her own emotions and the emotions of others and to act appropriately based on this understanding. Then in 1995, psychologist Daniel Coleman popularized this term with his book Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ. Emotional Intelligence is about having

empathy for others. It is about standing up for what you believe in a tactful and respectful way. It is about not jumping to conclusions, but getting the whole picture before you react. The key to emotional intelligence is an understanding of your emotions and the emotions of others, and acting in the most appropriate way based on that understanding. Having a healthy emotional intelligence is very important in order for human beings to live happy and successful lives. Healthy emotional intelligence helps us set our personal boundaries, make decisions about our lives, and communicate with the people we love.

Keep in mind that your emotional intelligence can change. People are always evolving. You can increase your EQ at any point in your life by learning to identify your emotions and taking responsibility for those emotions. And just as easily as you can increase your EQ, you can also decrease it. You must continue to identify and work on areas within yourself that need work.

1. Who was the first to put forth the term “emotional intelligence”?

C) Peter Salovey.

D) John Mayer and Peter Salovey.

others.

D) You cannot change your EQ unless you increase your IQ.

3. What does the underlined part “we have been led to believe” (Para.1) imply?

A) We have been forced to believe it by some people.

B) We have been persuaded to believe it by some people.

C) We have been influenced by the misbelief of many people.

D) We have been willing to follow the idea of other people.

4. What are the benefits a healthy emotional intelligence can bring us?

A) Help us set our boundaries in life.

B) Help us make decisions about our lives.

C) Help us communicate with those we love.

D) All of the above.

5. What is the passage mainly about?

A) The functions of IQ and EQ.

B) The Differences between IQ and EQ.

C) The importance of IQ and EQ.

D) The history and characteristics of EQ.

Passage 6

In the United States and Canada, a prom, short for promenade, is a formal (black tie) dance held at the end of an academic year. In the United Kingdom, the term is more widely understood to be in reference to a season of classical concerts or “proms”, which have been held between July and September since 1895, today run by the BBC. The British synonym for the Nor th American event would be Leavers’ Ball, Leavers’ Dinner, Leaver’s Dance or informally Leavers’ Do, closer to the Australian description. In Canada the terms Grad or Formal are

most common and the event is usually only held for those in their graduating year of high school or middle school.

While smaller schools may hold a school prom open to the entire student body, large high schools may hold two proms, a junior prom for those finishing their 11th grade year and a senior prom for those who are finishing their high school years. The name is derived from the late nineteenth century practice of a promenade ball.

Common prom activities include dining, dancing, the crowning of a prom King and Queen, and socializing.

Some universities and colleges have proms as well, depending on the size of the graduating class in a department.

Proms can be very expensive events. For many parents, however, the biggest concern isn’t the cost of attending prom, but worry about the risky behaviors associated with proms, teens driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs and unsafe sex, and how to ensure their son or daughter arrives home safely after attending prom. Therefore, some measures should be taken to keep the participants safe, lessen the fear and anxiety often accompanying prom night, thereby making this special occasion something to enjoy and remember with fond memories.

A "dark horse "is one that shows unexpected racing speed and comes in first, 1 the experts said he had little chance of winning.

British Prime Minister Benjamin Disrael is believed to 4 the first to use the phrase. In his novel, "The Young Duke ", published in 1831, Disrael described a horse race and told how the two top choices fell 5 ,while "a dark horse "which had never been thought of rushing past the grandstand (看台)in a sweeping triumph.

From racing to politics was a short step. As a political phrase, “dark horse ” 6 for the first time in the

national Democratic Party congress of 1844. The "dark horse" was James Knox Polk who became the llth President of the United States. Polk had been the leader of the House of Representatives from 1835 to 1839. He had 7 been Governor of the state of Tennessee. But as a national leader, he was considered a political 8 .

Nevertheless, he 9 won the Democratic nomination and was elected 10 .Martin Van Buren of New York, A former President, seemed sure of getting the nomination. But he opposed making the territory of Texas part of the United States as mother state. He was 11 it because there was slavery in Texas. Van Buren did not want another slave state in the Union. As a result, he 12 support among those Democrats who supported slavery.

At the 1884 congress, Van Buren could not get enough votes to win the nomination. The congress got into 13 . Therefore, the Democratic leaders decided that the only wise thing would be to run a "dark horse ", 14 who could unite the party.

And so, one of the party leaders, George Bancroft, proposed the name of James Knox Polk. He won, and the party 15 behind him, And he defeated his opponent , Henry Clay of the Whig Party.
