We have heard it repeatedly: most people do not get enough exercise. Yet when we look at our dogs, we can say we do not give them enough exercise either.

Do dogs enjoy exercise? Of course they do. Just ask people who have asked their dog if he wants to go for a walk. What has happened from then on whenver they have said the word walk? Dogs usually get so excited about going for walks.

The biggest issue about an exercise program for our dogs is getting them started. Never begin taking your under-exercised dog for extremely long walks all of a sudden. Dogs, just like people, need to warm up before they start to exercise and they should start a program slowly.

Walking is a great exercise for you and your dog alike. What is important is that the walking becomes a routine and is done on a regular basis. Regular means twice a day or more if it is all right with you. If you are tired of walking and your dog still wants to continue, then playing a game with your dog or letting your dog go after a toy can finish the program for the day.

To reduce any possible health risk, consider the following do’s and don’ts for exercising your dog:

·Do warm your dog up with a gentle walk before starting any exercise.

·Do have water available, but do not let him drink too much directly after a long walk.

·Do make the exercise a routine event.

·Don’t overdo it.

·Don’t feed your dog immediately before or after exercise.

·Don’t exercise your dog outside on the hottest part of a summer day or in very cold winter weather.

1. According to the passage, how do we know dogs enjoy exercise?

A.Dogs, unlike people, don’t feel tired ofter vigorous exercise

B.Dogs exercise outdoors in the heat of summer and cold of winter

C.Dogs get excited when we exercise them by taking them on a walk, for example.

3. According to the writer, what is important about walking?

A.It should be stopped once you feel tired.

B.It should be started suddenly.

C.It should be ended with a game or play.

D.It should be done twice a day or more if possible.

4. What should you do if you are tired of walking but your dog wants to continue?

A. Walk it till it gets tired.

B. Play a game with him instead.

C. Let him walk alone.

D. Go home immediately.

5. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

A.Dogs have better strength and endurance than humans.

John Gearhart’s early years were full of hardship. His father died when he wa s only six. After his father’s death, his mother placed him and one of his brothers in Gerard College, an all-male orphanage where he stayed until he graduated and entered Pennsylvania State University.

His memories of the family farm led him into horticulture(园艺). The study habits he had acquired in the orphanage helped him a great deal because he did not care for the life outside his university, and Gearhart saw many of his former classmates fall behind. Then, as he puts it, he “fell in love with genetics”.

After earning his B. Sc. In Biological Science at Penn. In 1964, he moved to the University of New Hampshire, where he got his M. Sc. In Genetics in 1966. He received his Ph. D. degree in Genetics, Development &Embryology from Cornell University in 1970.

Through all these years Gearhart had only occasional contact with his mother. His studies had led him far from the farming concerns of his family in Pennsylvania. When his mother became seriously ill, she came to Johns Hopkins Hospital for treatment, and it was only then, in her last months life, that Gearhart felt he finally came to know the mother who had been forced to give him

up so many years before.

Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there’s a big difference between being a writer and writing. In most cases these individuals are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hour s alone at a typewriter. “Y ou’ve got to want to write,” I say to them, “not want to be a writer.”

The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. For every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. When I left a 20-year career in the U.S. Coast Guard to become a freelance writer, I had no prospects at all. What I did have was a friend who found for me my room in a New York apartment building. It didn’t even matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used manual typewriter and felt like a genuine writer.

After a year or so, however, I still hadn’t got a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a story that barely made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn’t going to be one of those people who died wondering. What if? I would keep putting my dream to test (even though it meant living with uncertainty and fear of failure). This is the shadow-land of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there.

What do we think with? Only the brain? Hardly. The brain is like a telephone exchange. It is the switchboard, but not the whole system. Its function is to receive incoming signals, make proper connections, and send the messages through to their destination. For efficient service, the body must function as a whole.

But where is the mind? Is it in the brain? Or perhaps in the nervous system? After all, can we say that the mind is in any particular place? It is not a thing, like a leg, or even the brain. It is a function, an activity. Aristotle, twenty-three hundred years ago, observed that the mind was to the body what cutting was to the ax. When the ax is not in use, there is no cutting. So is the mind. “M ind,” said Charles H. Woolbert, “i s what the body is doing.”

If this activity is necessary for thinking, it is also necessary for carrying thought from one person to another. Observe how people go about the business of ordinary conversation. If you have never done this painstakingly (费力的), you have a surprise in store, for good conversationalists are almost constantly in motion. Their heads are continually nodding and shaking sometimes so vigorously that you wonder how their necks can stand the strain. Even the legs and feet are active. As for the hands and arms, they are seldom still for more than a few seconds at a time.

These people, remember, are not making speeches. They are merely common folk trying to make others understand what they have in mind. They are not conscious of movement. Their speech is not studied. They are just human creatures in a human environment, trying to adapt themselves to a social situation. Yet they converse, not only with oral language, but with visible actions that involve practically every music in the body.

In short, because people really think all over, a speaker must talk all over if he succeeds in making people think.
