V. Reading comprehension: (20%)

There are two types of people in the world. Although they have equal degrees of health and wealth and the other comforts of life, one becomes happy, the other becomes miserable. This arises from the different ways in which they consider things, persons, events, and the resulting effects upon their minds.

The people who are to be happy fix their attention on the conveniences of things, the pleasant parts of conversation, the well-prepared dishes, the goodness of the wines, and the fine weather. They enjoy all the cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the

contrary things. Therefore, they are continually discontented. By their remarks, they sour the pleasures of society, offend many people, and make themselves disagreeable everywhere. If this turn of mind were founded in nature, such unhappy persons would be the more to be pitied. The tendency to criticize and be disgusted is perhaps taken up originally by imitation. It grows into a habit, unknown to its possessors. The habit may be strong, but it may be cured when those who have it are convinced of its bad effects on their interests and tastes. I hope this little warning may be of service to them, and help them change this habit.

Although in fact it is chiefly an act of the imagination, it has serious consequences in life, since it brings on deep sorrow and bad luck. Those people offend many others, nobody loves them, and no one treats them with more than the most common politeness and respect, and scarcely that. This frequently puts them in bad temper and draws them into arguments. If they aim at obtaining some advantage in rank or fortune, nobody wishes them success. Nor will anyone stir a step or speak a word to favor their hopes. If they bring on themselves public disapproval, no one will defend or excuse them, and many will join to criticize their misconduct. These people should change this bad habit and condescend to be pleased with what is pleasing, without worrying needlessly about themselves and others. If they do not, it will be good for others to avoid any contact with them. Otherwise, it can be disagreeable and sometimes very inconvenient, especially when one becomes mixed up in their quarrels.

1.People who are unhappy _____.

https://www.wendangku.net/doc/4b953133.html,ually have a fault-finding habit

https://www.wendangku.net/doc/4b953133.html,ually are influenced by the results of certain things

D.always consider things differently from others

2. The phrase “sour the pleasures of society” most probably means _____.

A. enjoy the pleasures of society

B. feel happy with the pleasures of society

C.aren’t content with the pleasures of society

D.have a good taste to the pleasures of society

3. If such unhappy persons don’t change their bad behavior, the author’s solution to the problem

is that _____.

A.people should help them recognize the bad effects of their habit

B.people should avoid contact with them

C.people should show no respect and politeness to them

D.people should criticize their misconduct

4. “scarcely that” means _____.

A. “just like that”

B. “almost not like that”

C. “more than that”.

D. “not at all like that”

5. Which of the following statements in NOT true according to the passage?

A. Such unhappy people are critical about everything.

B. We should pity all such unhappy people.

C. If such unhappy people recognize the bad effects of the habit on themselves they may get

rid of it.

D. Such unhappy people are not content with themselves.

Motorways are, no doubt, the safest roads in the country. Mile for mile, vehicle for vehicle, you are much less likely or seriously injured than on an ordinary road. On the other hand, if you do have a serious accident on a motorway, fatalities are much more likely to occur than in a comparable accident elsewhere on the roads.

Motorways have no sharp bends, no roundabouts or traffic lights and thus speeds are much greater than on other roads. Though the 70m. p. h. limit is still in force, it is often treated with the contempt that most drivers have for the 30m. p. h. limit applying in built up area in Britain. Added to this is the fact that motorway drivers seem to like traveling in convoys with perhaps barely ten meters between each vehicle. The resulting horrific pileups (involving maybe a hundred vehicles) when one vehicle stops for some reason mechanical failure, driver error and so on have become all too familiar through pictures in newspapers or television. How many of these drivers realize that it takes a car about one hundred meters to brake to a stop from 70m. p. h.? Drivers also seem to think that motorway driving gives them complete immunity from the caprices(突变). However wet the road, whatever the visibility in mist or fog, they go at very high speeds oblivious of police warning or speed restrictions until their journey comes to a premature conclusion.

6. What can we infer from this passage?

A.Motorways are not the safest roads.

B.There are much more accidents on ordinary roads.

C.In accidents, people are much more unlikely to be killed on motorways.

D.People are more likely to be killed on motorways.

7. The drivers’ attitude toward the weather is _____.

A. optimistic

B. serious

C. pessimistic

D. careless

8. Which of the following in NOT a reason for road accidents?

A. Drivers like to travel in convoys.

B. Drivers realize that it takes a car about 100 meters to brake to a stop from 70m. p. h.

C. Drivers drive at completely unreasonable speeds.

D. Drivers drive very fast in mist or fog.

9. The way to deal with motorway madness may be _____.

A. better driver education

B. learner drivers are barred from motorways

C. more efficient policing is required

D. all of them

10. Which of the following is NOT true?

A.Motorways have no speed restriction.

B.Motorways have no traffic lights.

C.Motorways have no roundabouts.

D.Motorways have no sharp bends.

大英2英语口语测试题及答案

U1 TOPIC 1 Famous Universities 1.What kind of universities are good universities in your eyes? First of all, it should have a strong studying atmosphere. I hope students there can talk about their own opinions with freedom. Secondly, the teachers should be high standard and responsible. Then, the teaching equipment should be good, which will contribute to our study. 2.Do you think universities should try their best to provide their students with more scholarships? Why or why not? I don’t think more scholarships are necessary. Merit-based(基于优秀的;以业绩为基础的)scholarships, which are mainly awarded by universities, aim to encourage the students to learn more. It’s a motivation, or a reputation. Students who have financial problems could apply for need-based scholarships. So it’s not necessary for universities to provide more scholarships. 3.Which is more important in your college life, study or working experience? Why? In my opinion, we students should put study in the first place. Only by learning enough knowledge and skills now can we get a good job in the future. Our main task is to lay a solid(可靠的;坚实的) foundation for the future. So, it’s out of question that study is more important in college life. 4.If you had the opportunity to further your study in famous universities either at home or abroad, which would you choose? Why? T o be honest, I’d like to go abroad. First, I want to broaden my horizon. I have been dreaming about something quite different. Second, the academic atmosphere is freer abroad. Finally, I hope to meet more friends from all over the world. So, if possible, I’d like to go out to experience the study life there. 5.What is the aim for your college life?Explain. Above all, it’s beyond question that I want to acquire the knowledge and skills I expected. We can surely gain some working and even social experience. But they should not be our main aim. We should respect our university, the last place from where we get system education. So, my aim for college life is to learn as much as I can. 6.Do you think having a part-time job might affect your academic performance? Why or why not? Personally I think it will. It’s certain that taking a part-time job will occupy some study time. Study is not just doing homework. It requires many practices. Having a part-time job may affect our further study and our academic performance. Section Two Please have a group discussion on the following topic: What can make a university famous? Please give as many examples as possible. In my view, a famous university should have excellent teachers、tutors、professors and all of them and the managements should be responsible for their students. In addition the school should provide good facilities and enough support for the students, such as libraries, museums and scientific collections.
