Why do plants grow in some places and not in others? Why does some land have so much growing on it, while other land has almost no plants growing on it at all?

To grow, plants need several things. One is warmth. In very cold places almost nothing grows. Plants also need water. In very dry places of Earth only a few unusual plants can grow. That’s why dry deserts(沙漠) everywhere are almost not covered by trees and grass.

Plants must also have a place in which to put down their roots(根) and grow. They find it difficult to grow on hard land. The town is built on hard land. The plants here have only the soil(土壤) found between the cracks of the stones to grow in.

Another thing plants must have before they can grow is food.

What will happen if we try to make things grow on the sandy beach? A few plants, such as beach grass, will grow in sand, but most plants won’t. Even if the weather is warm enough and we water the plants each day, many of them will die because the sand on this beach has almost no food for plants.

The businessman then took a slip of paper out of his pocket and wrote, “If the man who was seen to take an umbrella from the city church last Sunday evening does not wish to get into trouble, he will return the umbrella to No. 10 Broad S treet. He is well known.”

This appeared in the newspaper, and on the following morning, the man was very surprised when he opened the front door. In the doorway lay at least 12 umbrellas of all sizes and colors that had been thrown in, and his own was among them. Many of them had notes saying that they had been taken by mistake and begging the loser not to say about the matter.

Can trees talk? Yes, but not in words. Scientists have reason to believe that trees can communicate with each other. Not long ago, they learned some surprising things. First, a willow(柳树) which had been attacked in the woods by caterpillars(毛毛虫) changed the chemistry(化学物质) of its leaves and made them taste so terrible that the caterpillars soon stopped eating them. Then even more surprising, the willow sent out a special vapour(雾气)—a kind of message causing its neighbours to change the chemistry of their own leaves and make them less tasty.
