五、阅读理解、完形填空题(共5道小题)

41.

Our dream is the song of our soul. Life without one is reduced to a hollow existence. But lif e with a dream is filled with meaning and purpose.

Most of us have a dream, or heart’s desire. But the trouble is most of us have the on/off sw itch of our dream set to OFF. Whenever we say, ―I can’t,‖ we set the switch to OFF. Whenever we believe we can, we set the switch to ON. Simple, isn’t it? Just because I believe I can do s

omething doesn’t mean there won’t be any problems. But once I believe I can do it, I will seek solutions for every problem I stumble on. And since it is a law of life that we find what we look for, if I look for solutions, I will find them.

Any worthy dream is a dream worthy of accomplishing. Once I realize I can do it, the next s tep is to make a commitment. As soon as we make a commitment, great power is released. Wh at seemingly were insurmountable hurdles are now reduced to obstacles of laughable insignifican ce. But we won’t reach th is stage until we decide to stop talking and start acting. Unless we co mmit ourselves, self-doubt will ferment and block our way.

Our dreams don’t have to be grand to be great. An aunt of mine sold gloves in a departmen t store for most of her life. Her dream was to be the friendliest and most helpful salesperson ar ound. Year after year, the same customers would return and deliberately seek her out. She brigh tened everyone’s day and touched the lives of thousands. Was her dream any less significant th an that of a prominent person? Of course not. We all have the power to follow a dream that will make a difference to us and those we meet.

No dream is too small; no dream is too big, so hold on to your dream. Langston Hughes tell s why, ―Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly.‖ So, what are you waiting for? Follow your dream!

42. Thereˇs nothing like a beautiful summer day blue skies, warm breezes, birds singing to lie back and dream about your future. You have the world before you.

Allow yourself to dream, and think big as big as the sky. The worldˇs greatest achievers are some of the best dreamers. Walt Disney, Amelia Earhart, Henry Ford, Susan B. Anthony, Andre w Carnegie, and hundreds more, all had dreams.

Then take the first step to make your dreams come true. Form a goal and accomplish it. C reate a new goal and accomplish it. Every time you set and achieve a goal, youˇll move one s tep closer toward building the future you want for yourself.

When you achieve a target youˇve set for yourself, it helps build your self-confidence and tea ches you self-discipline. Each goal you achieve will boost your confidence and help you set bigg er goals for your future. Soon, youˇll find yourself moving on a path to success.

Steps for reaching your dreams:

冘It can be as easy as starting a savings account at your credit union. Give yourself a goa l. First, what do you want to save for? It might be a new CD player, your first car, or college.

冘Next, where will your savings come from? Will you use a portion of your allowance, or ca n you think of other ways to earn money?

冘Itˇs okay to set small goals at first. In fact, that may be wise so you begin to understand the rewards and personal satisfaction that come from achieving your goals.

冘You can keep your goals secret or share them with someone close to you who may help you stay on track.

冘Another important step is to write your goal on paper. Post your written goal (or a photo of it) in your room where you can see it regularly. This will remind you of what you are working toward.

冘Give yourself a pat on the back when youˇve a chieved your goal and start thinking abou t your next personal challenge.

冘Before you know it, youˇll be living your dreams.

Most people-or at least more Western Europeans-did not accept daydreaming as part of th eir lives. In fact, until recently, daydreaming was viewed as a waste of time. Or it was considere d an unhealthy escape from real life and its duties. But now some people are taking a fresh loo k at daydreaming. And it may be that more people are suffering from a lack of daydreaming tha n are suffering from too much of it.

It now ap pears that a person’s self-control and self-direction may suffer if he or she does no daydreaming at all. Such a person may become poorly equipped to deal with the pressures of daily life.

Dr. Joan T. Freyberg has concluded that daydreaming contributes to intellectual growth. It als o improves concentration and the ability to get long with others, she says. Another researcher re ported that daydreaming seemed to produce improved self-control and creative ability.

But that’s only part of the stor y. The most remarkable thing about daydreaming may be its u sefulness in shaping our future lives, as we want them to be. Industrialist Henry J. Kaiser believ ed that much of his success was due to the positive use of daydreaming. He maintained that ―y ou can imagine your future.‖ Florence Nightingale dreamed of becoming a nurse. The young Tho mas Edison pictured himself as an inventor. For these notable achievers, it appears that their da ydreams came true.

Dr. Harry Emerson Fosdick believed that the way we pictured ourselves is often the way we turn out. He offered this advice: ―Hold a picture of yourself in your mind’s eye, and you will be drawn towards it. Picture yourself as defeated, and that alone will make victory impossible. Pictur e yourself vividly as winning, and that will contribute immeasurably to success. Do not picture yo urself as anything, and you will drift… ‖

44.

I always have the dream to dance like a beautiful ballerina twirling around and around and h earing people applaud for me. When I was young, I would twirl around in the fields of wildflower s that grew in my backyard. For hours I would dance as if people were watching me. Reality wo ke me up when I heard a voice sa ying, ―I don’ know why you bother trying to dance. Ballerinas are pretty, slender little girls. Besides, you don’t have the talent to even be a ballerina.‖ I remem ber how those words paralyzed every feeling in my body. I fell to the ground and wept for hour s.

We lived in the country by a nearby lake and I would sometimes go there. My parents were never home anyway and I did not like to be at home. When they were home, my mother just y elled and criticized because nothing was ever perfect in her life. She dreamed of a different life but ended up living in a country far away from the city where she believed her dreams would h ave come true.

I enjoyed hanging out by the water. I would sit there and stare at my reflection. There I was, looked nothing like a pretty ballerina dancer.

As I grew older, I began to realize that the reason my dream was even born in the first plac e, was because it was something that was inside of me. The dream I had was never nurtured a nd cared for, so it slowly died. It’s not that I wanted it to die, but I allowed it to die the day I st arted listening to the words, ―You can’t do it.‖ When I finally woke up from many years of dream ing, I realized that you can’t settle for dancing in the wildflowers, you have to move on to the pl atform. I still go to the lake sometimes and sit there. Looking at my reflection is different now to o. When I was young, I looked at how others saw me. Now that I am older and wiser, I look at how God sees me.
