The bold headmaster thought the fun and energetic exercise routine would better encourage students to get active instead of “being glued to their mobile phones”.

The school’s new 30-minute dance routine has replaced the government-imposed broadcast callisthenics programme(广播体操), a short workout that has been a requirement at every primary, middle and secondary school in China since 1951. “I thought we needed a change because the students have b een losing interest in doing the broadcast callisthenics routine,” Zhang told Southern Metropolis News.

An unconventional new initiative(首创)in Canada will soon allow doctors to prescribe art to their patients —by giving them free access to a local museum. Wandering through the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA),

these patients and their loved ones will be able to feast their eyes on the peaceful collections of art.

The initiative is the first of its kind in the world. And while you certainly can’t replace a conventional treatment with a couple of paintings, the idea is for such “prescriptions” to assist a person’s current treatment plan. Under the new program, members of the Francophone Association of Doctors in Canada (MFDC) will be able to hand out up to 50 prescriptions for their patients.

These prescriptions will be available for those with a wide range of mental and physical illnesses, and each of them will allow two adults and two children to visit the museum for free.

“By offering free admission to a safe, welcoming place, a relaxing experience, a moment of relief, and an opportunity to strengthen ties with loved ones, MMFA-MFDC Museum Prescriptions contribute to the patient’s well-being and recovery,” explains a news conference from the MMFA.

It may look a lot like a marketing effort for the museum but there’s also increasing evidence that the display of visual art, especially if it’s showing nature, can have positive effects on health outcomes.

In some ways, the benefits of looking at art appear a little similar to physical activity. A systematic review of clinical art therapy (疗法) found that visual art has significant and positive effects on depression, anxiety, mood, and self-esteem. Findings like these are slowly gaining attraction in the medical community, making artwork a higher priority (优先) in hospitals around the world.

In the US, nearly half of all health care institutions have reported including art in health care programming, such as art therapy and the placement of visual art in hospitals. With spaces dedicated (专用的) to art therapy and also a medical consultation room, the MMFA already provides services for people with mental health issues, eating disorders, and Alzheimer’s disease, just to name a few.

28. How will some Canadian doctors treat their patients?

A. Introducing fine arts to their patients.

B. Feasting them in a peaceful and welcoming place.

C. Keeping them company through the Montreal Museum.

D. Giving them a prescription to access a local museum for free.

29. MMFA thinks the new initiative in Canada can be_______.

A. a chance to make friends

B. a help with patients’ recovery

C. the best option for the treatment plan

D. a substitute for conventional treatment

30. Why does the museum join in the program?

A. To strengthen ties with doctors.

B. To advance the science of medicine.

C. To promote the museum into market.

D. To make visual art known to the public.

31. What does the passage mainly talk about?

A. Fine arts will take the place of medicine.

B. Artists rarely suffer from some mental diseases.

C. More than 50 prescriptions are available for patients.

D. Art will be included in Canadian doctors’ prescriptions.

The mass death of flying foxes in extreme heat in North Queensland last month underlines the importance of University of Queensland wildlife research released today. The UQ research sheds light on how various species have responded to major climate events.

A study led by UQ School of Earth and Environmental Science researcher Dr. Sean Maxwell has spent more than 70 years quantifying the responses of various species.

“The growing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events such as cyclones, droughts and floods is causing unpredictable and immediate changes to ecosystems and blocking existing management efforts,” Dr. Maxwell said. “Some of the negative responses we found were quite concerning, including more than 100 cases of dramatic population declines and 31 cases of local population extinction following an extreme event.”

“Populations of critically endangered bird species in Hawaii, such as the palia, have been annihilated due to drought, leaving none of its kind, and populations of lizard species have been wiped out due to cyclones in the Bahamas.”

Cyclones were the most common extreme event for birds, fish, plants and reptiles, while mammals and amphibians were most responsive to drought events, with drought leading to 12 cases of major population decline in mammals. Drought also led to 13 cases of breeding declines in bird populations and 12 cases of changes in the composition of invertebrate communities.

UQ Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation Science director Professor James Watson said the detailed information would help inform ecosystem management.

“The research clearly shows species will respond, often negatively, to extreme events,” Professor Watson said. “As climate change continues to ensure extreme climate and weather events are more and m ore common, we now need to act to ensure species have the best chance to survive. Wherever possible, high quality and intact habitat areas should be retained, as these are the places where species are most resilient(易恢复的) to increasing exposure

to extreme events.”

32. How was the UQ research conducted?

A. By observing extreme weather events.

B. By protecting the endangered species.

C. By recording reactions of animals to extreme climate.

D. By analyzing the reason why mass animal death happened.

33. What do es the underlined word “annihilated” in paragraph 4 probably mean?

A. destroyed.

B. disappeared.

C. decreased.

D. defeated.

34. Which of the following sentences is true about extreme weather events?

A. Cyclones wiped out populations of lizard.

B. Birds and mammals are most responsive to cyclones.

C. Drought caused 13 cases of distinction in bird populations.

D. Drought caused 12 cases of population decline in mammals.

35. What can we infer from Professor Watson’s words?

A. Animals often show negative responses to extreme events.

B. The existing management ways for wildlife protection are limited.

C. Complete and undamaged habitats are of great importance to species’ survival.

D. Different methods should be adopted to ensure the survival of different species.

第二节书面表达

Dear David ,

How’s everything going? As your birthday is drawing near, I've prepared a gift for you. It's a Chinese painting “ bamboo”, which I specially drew for you.

In Chinese culture, bamboo carries many best wishes and excellent qualities. On one hand, it stands straight

and stays green all year round, so it's always full of life. I wish you as strong and energetic as bamboo. On the other hand, it's hard outside but hollow inside. If compared to bamboo, one is usually considered to be strong-willed and modest. All in all, we use bamboo to represent a noble and gentle person.

I hope you like the gift and wish you a happy birthday.

Yours sincerely,

Li Hua

As a manager, Tiffany is responsible for interviewing applicants for some of the positions with her company .During one interview, she noticed that the candidate never made direct eye contact. She was puzzled and somewhat disappointed because she liked the individual otherwise. He had a perfect resume and gave good responses to her questions, but the fact that he never looked her in the eye said “untrustworthy,” so she decided to offer the job to her second choice. “It wasn’t until I attended a diversity workshop that I realized the person we passed over was the perfect person,” Tiffany confesses. What she hadn’t known at the time of the interview was that the candidate’s “different” behavior was simply a cultural misunderstanding . He was an Asian-American raised in a household where respect for those in authority was shown by averting(避开) your eyes. “I was just thrown off by the lack of ye contact; not realizing it was cultural,” Tiffany says. “I missed out ,but will not miss that opportunity again.” Many of us have had similar encounters with behaviors we perceive as different. As the world becomes smaller and our workplaces more diverse, it is becoming essential to expand our under-standing of others and to reexamine some of our false assumptions . Colleges taking another look at value of merit-based aid Good grades and high tests scores still matter—a lot—to many colleges as they award financial aid. But with low-income students projected to make up an ever-larger share of the college-bound population in coming years, some schools are re-examining whether that aid, typically known as “merit aid”, is the most effective use of precious institutional dollars. George Washington University in Washington, D.C., for example, said last week that it would cut the value of its average merit scholarships by about one-third and reduce the number of recipients(接受者), pouring the savings, about $2.5 million, into need-based aid. Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa., made a similar decision three years ago. Now, Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y., says it will phase out merit scholarships altogether. No current merit-aid recipients will lose their scholarships, but need-based aid alone will be awarded beginning with students entering in fall 2008. Not all colleges offer merit aid; generally, the more selective a school, the less likely it is to do so. Harvard and Princeton, for example, offer generous need-based packages, but many families who don’t meet need eligibility(资格)have been willing to pay whatever they must for a big-name school. For small regional colleges that struggle just to fill seats, merit aid can be an important revenue-builder because many recipients still pay enough tuition dollars over and above the scholarship amount to keep the institution running. But for rankings-conscious schools in between, merit aid has served primarily as a tool to recruit top students and to improve their academic profits. “They’re trying to buy students,”says Skidmore College economist Sandy Baum. Studies show merit aid also tends to benefit disproportionately students who could afford to enroll without it. “As we look to the future, we see a more pressing need to invest in need-based aid,”says Monica Inzer, dean of admission and financial aid at Hamilton, which has offered merit scholarships for 10 years. During that time, it rose in US News & World Repor t’s ranking of the best liberal arts colleges, from 25 to 17. Merit aid, which benefited about 75 students a year, or about 4% of its student body, at a cost of about $ 1 million a year, “served us well,”Inzer says, but “to be
