Lesson 1 YOU SHOULDN’T HAVE BEEN WORKING AT THE STUDIO SO LATE

SCENE ONE: THE STUDIO

JAKE: Chris, are you all right? What happened?

CHRIS: I’m not sure.I was editing the tape when I heard a noise.I thought it was you. When I came out to see who was here, the lights went out and this came crashing down.

JAKE: You shouldn’t have been working at the studio so late.

CHRIS: I told you I was going to work late.

JAKE: You should have made sure somebody was with you.

CHRIS: I couldn’t f ind anybody,Besides, I wanted to do it alone.

JAKE: Well, if you were going to be alone, you should have locked all the doors.

CHRIS: I thought they were locked.

JAKE: Did you check? You should have checked to make sure ther were locked.

CHRIS: I know, I know. I should have been more careful.

JAKE: And when you heard a noise, you should have called a security guard.

CHRIS: I assumed it was you.

JAKE: First rule of journalism, you should never assume anything.

Anyway, you should have called the police. You could have gotten killed.

CHRIS: I could have, but I didn’t. It doesn’t matter anymore. Did you see anybody coming out on your way in?

JAKE: No.

CHRIS: This was not an accident. Someone might be trying to scare me.

JAKE: Do you have any idea who it might have been?

CHRIS: It might have been Tetty.

JAKE: It couldn’t have been Terry.

CHRIS: Why not?

JAKE: I saw Terry at the Nature Center.

CHRIS: What was he doing there?

JAKE: I’m not sure. But I’ll find out. Let’s get you home.

CHRIS: OK… Thanks.

JAKE: What the matter?

CHRIS: I think I twisted my ankle.

JAKE: You should have told me you hurt yourself.

CHRIS: I did’t know until I stood up.

JAKE: Sit down…I’ll get so me ice.

CHRIS: Where are you going? Don’t leave me here alone.

JAKE: I keep a chest of ice with some soda in my office. Do you want some soda too?

CHRIS: OK… Oh, I feel like such an idiot.

JAKE: You should have told me about your ankle. We might have stopped the swelling.

CHRIS: Jake.

JAKE: Yeah?

CHRIS:I’m glad you’re here.

JAKE: So am I, Chris. How does that feel?

CHRIS: Cold.

JAKE: So did you find anything out when you were going through the tapes?

CHRIS: I think so. Do you remember when you were working with Roger Ward?

JAKE: I’m still working with him.

CHRIS:Remember the day he threw glove out?

JAKE: Not really. What does that have to do with anything?

CHRIS:Terry has Roger’s glove, or one just like it.

JAKE: Chris, I don’t see the connection.

CHRIS: There is a connection. I’m not sure what it is, but I know there is one.

JAKE: OK,Miss Detective. Let’s start walking.

LESSON 2

UNTIL I CAME TO WEFL,I HAD NEVER WORKED WITH A FAMOUS PERSON LIKE JAKE

SCENE ONE: THE STUDIO

JAKE: This is going to be a very interesting interview, Mike.

We’re talking with Thomas Ames, head of Mirage Realty.

MIKE: Who are these people?

JAKE: They claim to be one of the nation’s biggest real-estate developers.

MAKE: I’m surprised that I haven’t heard of them.

JAKE: Chris did some research on them for me. Until recently, no one had ever heard of them.

MIKE: So why are we doing a story on them now?

JAKE: This compny is trying to build apart-ments on the Nature Center.

SCENE TWO: MIRAGE REAL ESTATE

JAKE: Mr. Ames, thank you for talking with us.

AMES: Anything I can do to help.

JAKE: Mr.Ames, why are you doing this to the Nature Center?

AMES: Please don’t put it that way, Jake. We didn’t begin this project. Another company started it.

By the time we took over, the had already been made.

JAKE: The director of the Nature Center told me that until last week, he hadn’t heard a word about the apartments being built.

AMES: It was a quick deal.

JAKE: Isn’t that unusual?

AMES: I don’t have to go through a lot of red tape.I own the company. I make all the decisions.

JAKE: Can you show us the plans?

AMES: No, I’m sorry, Jake.

JAKE: Why are you building on the Nature Center? Won’t big apartments ruin the beauty of the Nature Center?

AMES: That’s not my problem.

I own the land. The Nature Center has been using it for many years, but it’s not theirs.

But let me tell you, Jake, these built with the most modern marerials.

JAKE: That’s the problem, Mr.Ames. When you planned this, didn’t you think about the problems you might cause?

AMEN: When you asked for this interview, I was extremely busy. But I made time for you. Now your time is up.

JAKE: I like your glove.

AMES: Actually, it’s not mine.

JAKE: Whose is it?

AMES: Does it matter?....Good day, Mr.Seltzer.

SCENE THREE: THE STUDID

CHRIS: I guess I have to admit that I find Jake…charming…Until I came to WEFL, I had never worked with a famous person like Jake. I hadn’t edited a videotape. I had never worked on anything really important before. I

hadn’t even been i n front of a camera.

It’s all so stimulating …It’s hard to tell whether I like Jake or the job. I gave him sailing lessons once, but they didn’t mean much.Until I started working at WEFL, I badn’t realized what a great guy Jake is. In fact, unti l just now, I had no idea how much I liked him.

LESSON 3 ACTUALLY, I’M STARVED.

SCENE ONE: THE STUDIO

JAKE: How long do you have to have this bandage on?

CHRIS: Probably a few days.

JAKE: I told you, you should have gone to the doctor right away. You might have avoided all of this.

CHRIS: When I got home, I soaked it in hot water. I thought it would be fine.

JAKE: You shouldn’t have walked on it.

CHRIS: That’s what the doctor said… He said I shouldn’t have soaked it in hot water.

I shouldn’t have driven the car either. It’s ridiculous. How would I have gotten to the doctor?

JAKE: You should have called me, I would have taken you there.

CHRIS: I tried, but you weren’t there.

JAKE: You should have tried again.

CHRIS: Oh, please. Look, if you want to do someth ing for me, I’m sure I can think of something.

JAKE: What?

CHRIS: You can go over research with me.

JAKE: What is it?

CHRIS: Uh-uh-uh. I’ll show you in a minute. I’ve learned some things about the Nature Cenrer.

JAKE: Well, I’m very interested in your what you have to say about its history.

CHRIS: There’s a price.

JAKE: What?

CHRIS: You can buy me dinner.

JAKE: Well, I don’t know. That’s an awful lot to ask. But I-I think I can handle it.

Will you hand over that reaearch now?

CHRIS: When I see dinner, you get the research.

SCENE TWO: THE STUDIO, LATER THE SAME DAY

CHRIS: Oooh, I shouldn’t have eaten all that.

JAKE: Did you like it? I couldn’t tell.

CHRIS: I was fine until I got to the egg rolls. You should have stopped me.

JAKE: I should have stopped you? Hah! I should have stopped myself!

CHRIS: We shouldn’t have ordered so much.

JAKE: Um, you’re right. I think we should have left out the shrimp dish.

CHRIS: No, I liked the shrimp. We shouldn’t have ordered the spareribs.

JAKE: Oh, yes, we should have. It was too much fun watching you eat them.

CHRIS: So, how’s my research?

JAKE: It’s good.

CHRIS: Oh. You like it?

JAKE: Write a story. We’ll record it in the morning.

CHRIS: Write it? Record it?

JAKE: It’s the best way to learn.

CHRIS: I don’t have much time.

JAKE: That’s right.I’ve been looking at my interview with Thomas Ames.

He’s a very strange man. Remember Roger’s glove?

CHRIS: Yes.

JAKE: Ames had one too.

CHRIS: You’re kidding?Do you think he has something to do with what’s been going on at the station?

JAKE: I’m not sure. I’ll have to think about it.

RITA: I thought I smelled Chinese food. Can I join you?

CHRIS: Sure. Weren’t you supposed to have dinner with Ter ry?

RITA: Yes. He was going to teach me about cameras.I thought that might be a good hobby for me,

you know, photography. I waited and waited, but he didn’t show up.

CHRIS: Oh, no.

RITA: Yeah. By the time he called, I had already made the entire dinner. I had cooked the roast and set the table. I had made the salad. I had even poured the wine. Wait until I see him face to face. He’s going to hear about this, believe me.

CHRIS: He really stood you up.

RITA: The only thing I hadn’t done was on light the candle s.

JAKE: You should have invited someone else.

RITA: I tried to call a girlfriend, but by the time I called her, she had already made other plans.

CHRIS: You should have just eaten it yourself.

RITA: I didn’t feel like eating alone. I came here to clean up my madeup room a bit.

CHRIS: We have lots of food left. Sticd around and help us finish it.

RITA: Actually, I’m starved. Oh, that chicken looks wonderfhl!

CHRIS: We have egg rolls. We have spareribs. We have chicken. We have shrimp.

We have Peking duck. We have Chinese vegertables, We have rice.

LESSON 4 IF YOU HADN’T SMILED SO MUCH, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER.

SCENE ONE: THE “HELLO AMERICA” SET

CHRIS: If it handn’t been for G.R. Hertzberg, the Nature Center wouldn’t have been started. He provided the money. He owned the land and donated it to the Stamford Nature Center. He built a museum so that young people could learn more about nature. 250,000 people visit the museum each year. The museum is a wonderful place for children. I spoke to many parents and their children today. Everyone thinks the museum is a wonderful place to spend an afternoon.

SCENE TWO: THE EDITING ROOM

CHRIS: I never would have shot it if hadn’t been for you.

JAKE: It’s interesting.

CHRIS: You don’t like it.

JAKE: If you hadn’t smiled so much, it would have been better.

CHRIS: Better? It’s bad?

JAKE: I didn’t mean that. I’m sorry. It’s just that…if you had talked about the value of the Nature Center, it would have been more interesting. There’s no news here, Chris.

CHRIS: Oh.

JAKE: But you’re getting there. It’s definitely better.

CHRIS: Will you take me on your next story?

JAKE: If you haan’t injured yourself, I would have taken you with me today.

I went back to see Thomas Ames at Mirage Realty.

CHRIS: Did you learn anything?

JAKE: No. If I had gotten there early enough, I could have talked to his secretary. I would have gotten some important information. I would have asked for another interview. But Ames and his secretaty were gone by the time I got there.

CHRIS: What is Ames like?

JAKE: He’s nasty. I don’t like him.Of course, I asked him some tough questions.

If I’d been nicer the last time I was there, he might have answered my questions.

CHRIS: What do you know about him?

JAKE: Thomas Ames is a very rich man. He moved to Stamford last year and started buying everything—land, businesses, hotels. He tried to buy this station, but Sam Finch wouldn’t sell it to him.

CHRIS: Then we’d be working for Thomas Ames?

JAKE: Not me.

CHRIS: It’s too bad that I twisted my ankle. If I hadn’t hurt my ankle, I could have helped you more… I’m so sorry my story didn’t turn out well. I tried with it, but I guess it isn’t as good as I had hoped.

JAKE: You’re getting there, though.

CHRIS: Can you make any more suggestions?

JAKE: Sure. If you had taken a picture behind the children, you could have shown where the apartments will be.

CHRIS: I see what you mean.

LESSON 5 I WISH I DIDN’T HAVE TO KEEP ANY SECRETS FROM YOU.

SCENE ONE: THE PARK

RITA: I wish I hadn’t started my diet today.

TERRY: Why? Are you still hungry?

RITA: I’m starving. There’s nothing left in here.

I wish I had packed a huge turkey sandwich on a roll with mustard and mayonnaise and lettuce and tomato and cheese.

TERRY: I wish I had known. I wouldn’t have eaten everything.

Are you sure we can't use it? STEVEN: White never works well on television. RITA: I really did my best. I bought some great sunglasses. I found the perfect pants. I returned so many sweaters, the salesclerk hides when she sees me. STEVEN: Please return the sweater. And you have to return a skirt for Mary Beth. It was too short. RITA: All right. RITA: Guess what? Steven wants me to exchange this sweater again. First he thinks the color is too bright. Then he thinks the color isn't bright enough. I don't know. He changes his mind so often, I'm getting confused. I need some help!

1. I'm so fed up with your BS. Cut the crap. "Cut your crap." 2. Hey! wise up! 当别人作了什么愚蠢的事时, 你可以说, "Don't be stupid" 或是"Don't be silly." Wise up, please. 3. Put up or shut up. Put up or shut up. Put up or shut up. 有时为了要加强shut up 的语气, 老美会把它说成, shut the f**k up. The house on the haunted hill 女主角身陷鬼屋之中, 其它人又七嘴八舌时, 她就很生气地说了一句, shut the f**k up. 这句话也让我想到一句成语, walk the walk, talk the talk, 也就是说到就要作到,有点像是中文里知行要合一的意思, 或是只说, walk the talk 也可以. 4. You eat with that mouth? 还有一种说法, "You kiss your Momma with that mouth?" You are dead meat. 或是像这样说"You are dead meat." Don't you dare! How dare you! 或是"I double dare you." 7. Don't push me around.

LESSON 1 THIS STORY ISN'T BIG ENOUGH TO HELP MY CAREER. Jake: Good morning, Steven. Are you all right? Steven: Hi, Jake. Yes, I'm fine. I'm just a little tired. Jake: Late night last night, huh? Party? Dancing? What was it? Steven: The baby. He wakes up every three hours--at eleven, two, and five. When the alarm clock goes off at seven, I'm too tired to get up. Jake: Every three hours? Why? Steven: Because he's hungry. Jake: Can't you just leave a bottle of milk next to his bed? Steven: Peter isn't old enough to feed himself. He's only two months old. Jake: When will he be old enough to feed himself? Steven: In a few years. Jake: A few years! Can't you just tell him to wait until morning? Steven: He isn't old enough to understand what people say. Jake: Poor Steven. You need to drink lots of coffee. Steven: Usually I rush to work without any breakfast at all. Anne and I are too busy to eat regular meals. We're even too busy to go grocery shopping.
