A

When I was six, Dad brought home a dog one day, who was called“Brownie”. My brothers and I all loved Brownie and did different things with her. One of us would walk her, another would feed her, then there were baths, playing catch and many other games. Brownie, in return, loved each and every one of us. One thing that most touched my heart was that she would go to whoever was sick and just be with them. We always felt better when she was around.

One day, as I was getting her food, she chewed up(咬破)one of Dad's shoes, which had to be thrown away in the end. I knew Dad would be mad and I had to let her know what she did was wrong. When I looked at her and said, “Bad girl,” she looked down at the ground and then went and hid. I saw a tear in her eyes.

Brownie turned out to be more than just our family pet. She went everywhere with us. People would stop and ask if they could pet her. Of course she'd let anyone pet her. She was just the most lovable dog. There were many times when we'd be out walking and a small child would come over and pull on her hair. She never barked(吠)or tried to get away. Funny thing is she would smile. This frightened people because they thought she was showing her teeth. Far from the truth, she loved everyone.

Now many years have passed since Brownie died of old age. I still miss the days when she was with us.

You're late for a job interview when traffic slows to a crawl. At the supermarket, a customer wheeling a full cart cuts ahead of you in the checkout line. You spend months on a make-it or break-it project, and your lazy collegue lands the promotion. Feel that burn? Before you explode with rage or fly into a fury, take a deep breath and remember this: Anger hurts. Study after study has found that high levels of anger and hostility(故意)are assocaited with greater risk for heart disease, poor immune(免疫)responses, and even a tendency for obesity(肥胖). Men with high anger scores were three times more likely to develop heart disease than their calmer companions, a Harvard School of Public Health study found. And in women, arguments with husbands raise hormone levels and lower immunity(免疫力)—a real problem, since lower immune response may increase women's risk of cancer.

It doesn't seem to matter whether you release the anger or hold it in, experts say. The effect on your health are the same. “Anger_is_anger,”says Redford williams, M.D,director of the Behavioral Medicine Research Center at Duke University Medical Center and co-author of the book Life Skills, “Both are harmful to health.”

The good news is, it is possible to control your anger. “By evaluating it and using various techniques, you can talk yourself out of it,” Williams says,“That's what's nice about us humans: We can always do something or not do something to change our behavior.”

40.From the passage we learn that________.

A.people who easily get angry are more likely to suffer from some diseases than cheerful ones

B.calmer people suffer from some diseases easily

C.men suffer more from high levels of anger and hostility than woman

D.high levels of anger and hostility will unavoidably result in heart disease, obesity and cancer

41.According to Redford Williams,“Anger is anger”means that________.

A.anger is harmful to your health

B.one should release anger for the sake of health

C.one should hold in anger for the sake of health

D.anger is harmful in spite of its different forms of expression

由第二段中“The effects on your health are the same.”

42.“Talk yourself out of it”in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to________.

A.talking to yourself helps you control your feeling

B.talking helps you hold in your anger

C.persuade yourself not to get angry

D.control your anger by talking to yourself

由文章最后一段中“By evaluating it and using various techniques, you can talk yourself out of it,”可知,作者劝告人们要努力控制,不要让自己发火。

43.What is the best title for the passage?

A.Anger Is Anger.

B.Releasing Anger or Holding It in.

C.Controlling Anger before It Controls You.

D.Anger, a big killer.

C

When you are little, the whole world feels like a big playground. I was living in Conyers, Georgia the summer it all happened. I was a second grader, but my best friend Stephanie was only in the first grade. Both of our parents were at work and most of the time they let us go our own way.

It was a hot afternoon and we decided to have an adventure in Stephanie's basement. As I opened the basement door, before us lay the biggest room, full of amazing things like guns, dolls, and old clothes. I ran downstairs, and spotted a red steel can. It was paint. I looked beyond it and there lay even more paint in bright colors like purple, orange, blue and green.

“Stephanie, I just found us a project for the day. Get some paintbrushes. We are fixing to paint.”She screamed with excitement as I told her of my secret plans and immediately we got to work. We gathered all the brushes we could find and moved all of our materials to my yard. There on the road in front of my house, we painted big stripes(条纹)of colors across the pavement(人行道). Stripe by stripe, our colors turned into a beautiful rainbow. It was fantastic!

The sun was starting to sink. I saw a car in the distance and jumped up as I recognized the car. It was my mother. I couldn't wait to show her my masterpiece. The car pulled slowly into the driveway and from the look on my mother's face, I could tell that I was in deep trouble.

My mother shut the car door and walked towards me. Her eyes glaring, she shouted, “What in the world were you thinking? I understood when you made castles out of leaves, and climbed the neighbors' trees, but this! Come inside right now!”I stood there glaring back at her for a minute, angry because she had insulted(侮辱)my art.

“Now go clean it up!”Mother and I began cleaning the road. Tears ran down my cheeks as I saw my beautiful rainbow turn into black cement.

Though years have now passed, I still wonder where my rainbow has gone. I wonder if, maybe when I get older, I can find my rainbow and never have to brush it away. I guess we all need sort of rainbow to brighten our lives from time to time and to keep our hopes and dreams colorful.

44.What did the writer want to do when his mother came home?

A.To introduce Stephanie to her.

B.To prevent her from seeing his painting.

C.To put the materials back in the yard.

D.To show his artwork to her.

答案:D根据第四段“I saw a car in the distance and jumped up as I recognized the car. It was my mother. I couldn't wait to show her my masterpiece.”

45.In his mother's eyes, the writer________.

A.was a born artist

B.always caused trouble

C.was a problem solver

D.worked very hard

46.The underlined word“rainbow”in the last paragraph refers to________.

A.the rainbow in the sky

B.the stripes on the pavement

C.something imaginative and fun

D.important lessons learned in childhood

47.It can be learned from the passage that parents should______.

A.encourage children to paint

B.value friendship among children

C.discover the hidden talent in children

D.protect rather than destory children's dreams

D

Millions of people die of hunger in southern Africa every year, but when Zambia was offered thousands of tons of free corn by the US, the government politely said no.

“We don't know whether the food is safe,”said Zambia's Commerce, Trade and Industry Minister Dipak Patel.

His worries are shared by counries around the world that are in_two_minds about America's genetically modified(GM,转基因)crops. Just last week, EU member nations were discussing whether or not to import GM sweet corn from the US.

Ever since people started farming they have tried to crossbreed(杂交)plants to make them stronger or better tasting. At one time, only related plants could be crossed with each other.

But when GM techniques were developed in the 1970s, scientists were able to put a single gene from a living creature into an unrelated creature.

This means they can make crops more productive and resistant(有抵抗力的)to disease by adding genes from other species. They can also create food with speicial characteristics, such as“golden rice” which is enriched with vitamin A. But many people believe GM foods are a health risk.

“If left to me, I would certainly not eat GM foods”,said Scotish scientist Arpad Pusztai. “We are putting new things into food which haven't been eaten before. The effects on the immune system(免疫系统)are not easy to predict.”

At the moment, the official argument is that GM foods,“are not likely to present risks for human health”. But there are still many questions to be answered as the foods are produced in different ways.

Some experts believe the genetic material added to plants can transfer to humans and give damage to our bodies. Further harm could be caused by the genes from GM plants crossbreeding with naturally produced crops.

48.We learn from the passage that________.

A.people have discovered that GM foods will do harm to human health

B.millions of Zambia people die of eating too much GM foods

C.people are still not sure if GM foods will do harm to human health

D.genetic material added to plants will damage our bodies sooner or later

49.The underlined words“in two minds” in the third paragraph means“________”.

A.unsure B.worried

C.likely D.careless

故选A。

50.Which of the following statements is NOT true about GM foods?

A.It is produced from plants with added genes from other species.

B.GM foods can have special characteristics.

C.GM foods will affect people's immune system.

D.GM techniques have been developed since 1970s.

短文倒数第三段最后一句话“The effects on the immune system(免疫系统)are not easy to predict.”

51.What the author's attitude towards GM foods?

A.Supportive. B.Neutral.

C.Doubtful. D.Critical

E

The Atlantic Ocean is one of the ocean that separate in the Old World from the New. For centuries it kept the Americans from being discovered by the people of Europe.

Many wrong ideas about the Atlantic made early sailors unwilling to sail far out into it. One idea was that it reached out to“the edge of the world”. Sailors were afraid that they might sail right of the earth. Another idea was that at the equator the ocean would be boiling hot.

The Atlantic Ocean is only half as big as the Pacific, but it is still very large. It is more than 4,000 miles(3,200km)wide.

Two things make the Atlantic Ocean rather unusual. For so large on ocean it has very few islands. Also, it is the world's saltiest ocean.

There is so much water in the Atlantic that it is hard to imagine how much there is. But suppose no more rain fell into it and no more water was brought to it by rivers. It would take the ocean about 4,000 years to dry up. On the average the water is a little more than two miles(3.2km)keep, but in places it is much deeper. The deepest spot is near Puerto Rico. This“deep”meaures 30,246 feet—almost six miles(9.6km).

One of the largest mountain ranges of the world rises from the floor of the Atlantic. This mountain range north and south down the middle of the ocean.

The tops of a few of the mountains reach up above the sea and make islands.

Several hundred miles eastward from Florida there is a part of the ocean called the Sargasso Sea. Here the water is quiet, for there is little winds. In the days of sailing vessels the crew were afraid they would be becalmed here. Sometimes they were.

Today the Atlantic is a great highway. It is however, not always a smooth and safe one. Storms sweep across it and pile up great waves. Icebergs float down from the Far North across the paths of ships.

We now have such fast ways of traveling that this big ocean seems to have grown smaller. Columbus sailed for more than two months to across it. A fast modern steam ship can make the trip in less than four days. Airplanes fly from New York to London in only eight hours and from South America to Africa in four!

52.Which world is the Old World?

A.Africa. B.Europe.

C.Asia. D.All of the three above.

53.What caused people to be unwilling to explore the Atlantic?

A.There are no ships big enough to get across the Ocean.

B.Sailors were afraid of being lost in the Ocean.

C.The Atlantic Ocean was very unusual because it has few island and saltiest water.

D.Many incorrect ideas made people think the Ocean was full of danger.

从文章的第二段的介绍可知,过去人们认为大西洋“reached out to‘the edge of the world’. Sailors were afraid that they might sail right of the earth. Another idea was that at the equator the ocean would be boiling hot.”,所以不愿去探索大西洋。

54.What is the topic of the fifth paragraph?

A.How deep the water is.

B.How to measure the water in the Atlantic Ocean.

C.How much water the Ocean holds.

D.How rain affects the Ocean water.

55.What does the word“highway”in paragraph 9 imply?

A.High road. B.Broad way.

C.Fast road. D.Main water way.

What an interesting picture it is! Sitting before a plate of zongzi, the boy is at a complete loss of how to unwrap them and eventually turns to a book for instructions! The picture is trying to convince us of a fact that many of the young are losing their basic hands on ability in everyday life.

Many factors contribute to this phenomenon. Firstly, many children have been forced to focus on their school work only, having little or no space to experience things in real life. Secondly, parents are over-protective. They take over almost all their children's life. Thirdly, the Internet and certain books provide actually everything we need. It is not surprising for children to

develop dependence on them for help.

From where I stand, giving children chances to do things for themselves is the only remedy. Anyway, nobody can learn to swim without jumping into water.

Unit 1 Living well-Reading MARTY’S STORY Hi, my name is Marry Fielding and I guess you could say that I am "one in a million". In other words, there are not many people like me. You see, I have a muscle disease which makes me very weak, so I can't run or climb stairs as quickly as other people. In addition, sometimes I am very clumsy and drop things or bump into furniture. Unfortunately, the doctors don't know how to make me better, but I am very outgoing and have learned to adapt to my disability. My motto is: live One day at a time. Until I was ten years old I was the same as everyone else. I used to climb trees, swim and play football. In fact, I used to dream about playing professional football and possibly representing my country in the World Cup. Then I started to get weaker and weaker, until I could only enjoy football from a bench at the stadium. In the end I went into hospital for medical tests. I stayed there for nearly three months. I think I had at least a billion tests, including one in which they cut out a piece of muscle from my leg and looked at it under a microscope. Even after all that, no one could give my disease a name and it is difficult to know what the future holds. One problem is that I don't look any different from other people. So sometimes some children in my primary school would laugh, when I got out of breath after running a short way or had to stop and rest halfway up the stairs. Sometimes, too, I was too weak to go to school so my education suffered. Every time I returned after an absence, I felt stupid because I was behind the others. My life is a lot easier at high school because my fellow students have accepted me. The few who cannot see the real person inside my body do not make me annoyed, and I just ignore them. All in all I have a good life. I am happy to have found many things I can do, like writing and computer programming. My ambition is to work for a firm that develops computer software when I grow up. Last year invented a computer football game and a big company has decided to buy it from me. I have a very busy life with no time to sit around feeling sorry for myself. As well as going to the movies and football matches with my friends, I spend a lot of time with my pets. I have two rabbits, a parrot, a tank full of fish and a tortoise. To look after my pets properly takes a lot of time but I find it worthwhile. I also have to do a lot of work, especially if I have been away for a while. In many ways my disability has helped me grow stronger psychologically and become more independent. I have to work hard to live a normal life but it has been worth it. If I had a chance to say one thing to healthy children, it would be this: having a disability does not mean your life is not satisfying. So don't feel sorry for the disabled or make fun of them, and don't ignore them either. Just accept them for who they are, and give them encouragement to live as
