An eighth planet, Kepler-90i, has been found in a distant solar system, matching our own in numbers. Even more amazing, it is machines not humans that made the discovery. NASA (美国国家航空航天局) joined with Google to announce the finding. This eighth planet orbits the star known as Kepler-90.

The Kepler planet-hun ting satellite has been searching the stars for distant worlds using Google‘s AI system. Google used data from NASA‘s sp ecial planet-hunting device to find exact place of Kepler-90i. Google used the data to develop a computer program with machine learning. This means it can learn and improve itself without a programmer telling it to do so. The program carefully studies planetary signals that are so weak that it would take humans years to examine them.

The discovery of a system similar to our own raises hopes of finding alien life elsewhere in the universe. The Kepler-90 planets have a similar configuration (构造) to our solar system, with small planets orbiting close to their star and the larger planets found farther away. According to NASA, this shows for the first time that distant star systems can be home to ?families as large as our own.‘

The new planet, Kepler-90i estimated to be about 30 percent larger than Earth, is ―not a place you‘d like to visit,‖ said Andrew Vanderburg, astronomer and NASA Sagan Postdoctoral Fellow at The University of Texas, Austin. ―It‘s probably rocky, and doesn‘t have a thick atmosphere. And, it‘s about as hot as Mercury.‖

Further studie s have been able to find some of these planet‘s atmospheres, and the Google AI have been used to loo k through this data to find the possible worlds where it‘s suitable for human living. It is a question people have been asking for ages—is there a way to turn back the aging process?

For centuries, pe ople have been looking for a ―fountain of youth.‖ The idea is that if you find a magical fountain, and drink from its waters, you will not become old. Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León searched for waters with magical powers in the early 1500s. But what he found instead is the American State of Florida.

Researchers in New York did not find a fountain of youth in fact, but they may have found a way to turn back the aging process. It appears the answer may be hidden right between your eyes, in an area called the hypothalamus (丘脑下部).The hypothalamus is part of your brain. It controls important activities within the body, including growth, reproduction and the way we process (处理) food.

Researchers at New York‘s Albert Einstein College of Medicine found that hypothalamus stem cells (干细胞) also influence how fast aging takes place in the body. What are stem cells? They are simple cells that can develop into specialized cells, like blood or skin cells. Stem cells can also repair damaged parts in the body.

Professor Dongsheng Cai was the lead researcher in a study on aging in mice. Cai explains in the Journal Nature what they found. ―Aging speed can be controlled by a particular place in the body, which is the hypothalamus. And it can be controlled by a particular type of cells, which are hypothalamus stem cells.

I think these findings are quite interesting.‖

He adds that when the hypothalamus starts aging, so does the body. ―So when hypothalamus function is decreasing, particularly the loss of hypothalamus stem cells, this protection against the aging development is lost. It finally leads to aging.‖

Using this information, the researchers began trying to activate (激活) the hypothalamus in mice. They did this by putting stem cells from younger mice into middle-aged animals. Later, the researchers examined mice and tested for changes in behavior. They also looked for changes in the strength of the animals‘ muscles and the way they worked. The researchers say the results show that the treatment slowed aging in the animals.

Cai says when hypothalamus stem cells, which were derived from young mice was put into middle-aged mice, the mice aged slowly and they also have increased the length of their lives.

But these results were just from studying mice in a lab. If the mice can live longer, does that mean people could have longer lives? The next step is to see if the anti-aging effects also work in human beings.

Mike licked the last of the chocolate chip ice cream. It was almost time to leave. He jumped into the car with his parents and left for the Olympic-sized pool for the big swim meet (游泳比赛).

It was the last mee t of the season, and Mike was not sure what to expect. He‘d been training hard with his dad, and staying away from the rich desserts he enjoyed so much. He felt healthy again, but he didn‘t know if he still had any speed in the pool.

As he jumped into the water, he kicked his legs and stretched his arms as far as he could. He made the turn at the end of the lane (泳道) perfectly, and was feeling strong. This race was a long one, so Mike tried to keep his energy level up even as he began feeling tired.

Whenever he came up for a breath, he could see he was gaining on the boy ahead of him in the next lane. Feeling determined to pass him, Mike found the power in his muscles to push ahead, and as his hand touched the edge of the pool, the race was over. Americans have similar doubts about riding in a car without a driver. The Pew Research Center finds that 56 percent of Americans will not ride in a driverless car. Fifty-nine percent say they will not use a robot caregiver.

Most Americans want the government to limit automation. For example, 87 percent support a requirement that all driverless vehicles have a human in the driver‘s seat who can take control when needed. And 85 percent want to limit machines to mostly doing jobs that are dangerous for humans. About 33 percent of Americans believe that their own jobs are threatened by automation. ―About one in five said they knew someone whose hours were cut, or whose jobs were lost all together because of automation.
