There are many reports that plastic has done harm to sea animals. Perhaps many people don’t think otherwise. But when you read the following report, what do you think of the main character and what he did?

Brigitte Barthelemy was walking along the seashore just north of France's Bordeaux wine region when she discovered a bottle lying among some seashells. Inside were two pieces of paper. One contained a hand-drawn picture of a seagull, while the other was a message showing how litter in the ocean is often deadly to the water birds.

The bottle is the brainchild of George Boorujy. From 2011-2013, the artist dropped over two dozen bottles into the ocean from a Staten Island beach in New York. Each contained an image of a water bird and a message similar to the one Brigitte found. Boorujy says he was inspired to take action after becoming aware of the effect the carelessly thrown plastic has on wildlife.

Researchers say that around 90% of seabirds have plastic in their stomachs. Many

chicks(雏鸟)die because their mothers unintentionally feed them bits of plastic along with their food. Boorujy hopes his message will raise awareness about the danger that seabirds face. He also enjoys the opportunity to give away his art and create a unique experience for the finder.

Over the years, the artist has received calls from lots of people that have discovered his bottles. However, they were all found close to Staten Island, making Brigitte's discovery even more special.

No matter how the bottle reached France, its message has had a big influence on Brigitte. She not only plans to be more respectful of the environment but contacted (联系)the local bird association to see how they could help. While receiving a message in a bottle can certainly help inspire people, it should not be necessary to remind us how dangerous our careless habits are for the marine mammals(海洋哺乳动物)and seabirds. So remember to reuse, recycle and most importantly, reduce.

25. Where did Brigitte find the bottle?

A. In Bordeaux.

B. On a French beach.

C. In New York.

D. On Staten Island.

26. What does the bottle found by Brigitte contain?

A.A seagull.

B. Some seashells.

C. A message.

D. Some plastic.

27. What does the author think of the bottles?

A. They can educate the finders.

B. They are unnecessary.

C. They are a great way to show art.

D. They cause danger to sea animals.

C

The other day I wrote a business plan, I gave it to my husband for suggestions. After reading it, he said, “I don’t think this is up to your usual standards.”

I said, “I need more information. What doesn’t work?” He said he wasn’t sure.

I then took the letter and reread it.

He asked, “How about if I look at it again and make notes between the space?”

I agreed. A half hour later I looked at his notes and told him he didn’t understand the situation and what I really wanted to express. He shrugged (耸肩) and said OK.

I took the letter and went back to my computer and again revised. As I was writing, I could see my letter improving based on his suggestions. When I finished, I proudly handed the letter back to my husband. He read it for the third time and said, “It’s still not right but I couldn’t exactly say.” I was a little annoyed and then told him I was the writer and I had seen some foolish letters he sent out. But I picked up

my letter and went back to the computer.

After an hour of revisions, I went back to my husband apologetically with letter in hand. I told him I was sorry for what I’d said and asked if he would please read the letter again because I did value his contribution. Being a very patient and kind-hearted fellow, he once again read my letter and declared that it was fine.

This all leads me to the following: When you ask for advice on a project, be appreciative and grateful. Understand that the advice and suggestions you get may be negative. Understand that it may mean more work for you. And keep in mind that the final responsibility for the project is still yours. So be modest and thankful even if he or she has noted some problems.

28. Why did the author give her business plan to her husband at first?

A. To show off her excellent work.

B. To ask him to give her some advice.

C. To ask him to make some changes from all details.

D. To have him type it on the computer.

29. The author’s husband shrugged after hearing her words because he _________.

A. knew there was nothing wrong in the business plan

B. believed in his judgment but couldn’t find why

C. doubted about himself since he found no excuses

D. believed he himself was right and knew the roots

30. We can infer from the passage that the author’s husband was __________.

A. selfish, proud and determined

B. good at expressing himself

C. humorous, active and careful

D. honest, kind and patient

31. The author wants to tell us that if you ask for suggestions, __________.

A. do accept all suggestions from the givers

B. do keep silent before taking action

C. don’t get upset if some are negative

D. do be grateful and confident

D

You are a new manager at the American branch of your German firm in Chicago. With a few minutes to spare between meetings, you go to get a quick cup of coffee.

“Hey, David, how are you?” one of the senior partners at the fir m asks you.

“Good, thank you, Dr. Greer,” you reply. You’ve really been wanting to make a connection with the senior leadership at the firm, and this seems like a great opportunity. But as you start to think of something to say, your American colleague breaks in to steal your spotlight.

“So Arnold”, your colleague says to your boss, in such a casual manner that it makes your German soul cringe(畏缩), “So what’s your Super bowl prediction? I mean, you’re a Nin th fan, right?”

The conversation moves on, and you walk silently back to your desk with your coffee. You know how important small talk is in the U. S., and you feel jealous(妒忌的) of people like your colleague who can do it well.

There’s nothing small about the role that small talk plays in American professional culture. People from other countries are often surprised at how important small talk is in the U. S. and how naturally and comfortably people seem to do it-with peers, men, women, and even with superiors. You can be the most technically skilled worker in the world, but your ability to progress in your job in the United States is highly dependent on your ability to build and maintain positive relationships with people at work. And guess what skill is critical for building and maintaining these relationships? Small talk.

What can you do if you are from another culture and want to learn to use small talk in the U. S. to build relationships and establish trust? Work hard to hone(磨

练) your own version of American-style small talk. Watch how others do it. You don’t have to mimic what they do; in fact, that would likely backfire because people would see you as inauthentic (不可靠的). But if you can develop your own personal version, that can go a long way toward making you feel comfortable and competence.

32. The author introduces the topic of the passage by__________.

A. raising an interesting question

B. making comparisons

C. describing an interesting scene

D. telling a small jokes

33. What do we know about German people?

A. They usually make small talk in work breaks.

B. They don’t make so much small talk.

C. They hate making small talk.

D. They are good at making small talk, too.

34. What makes people from other countries surprised in American professional culture?

A. American workers’ ability to make progress.

B. American workers’ attitude towards superiors.

C. The role small talk plays in work setting.

D. The special meaning of small talk.

35. What does “backfire” underlined in the last paragraph mean?

A. be difficult

B. be helpful

C. have the opposite effect

D.have a good result

第二节:七选五(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging emotion, unless you learn how to deal with it. They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer.

36 Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Others burst with anger, and scream and yell. But other people keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it. This is called repressing anger.

For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person’s health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain

releases the same hormones (荷尔蒙). They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etc. 37

Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger violently may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.

38 They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, “ 39 Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably.”

Doctors say that a good way to deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry. 40

A. Anger may cause you a cancer.

B. Do not express your anger while angry.

C. They said that laughter is much healthier than anger.

D. In general the person feels excited and ready to act

E. Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time.

F. Doctors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger.

G. Expressing anger violently is more harmful than repressing it

By the end of the summer, I remember parents crying when they saw how their children had 50 .

The biscuits, 51 , were delicious, and I can still remember the taste of them today. More importantly, I still remember the lesson they taught me: that if we, the 52 , can find the right 53 for a child, there’s hope for their education. That starts with looking hard at each child, finding out 54 excites them, and taking advantage of that excitement.

When I was growing up poor in the south Bronx, one of four boys 55 by a single mom, I probably looked like I was 56 nowhere, getting into trouble. And I would have 57 dead or in prison, like many of my friends, if it hadn’t been for a couple of teachers who 58 my fascination with reading and made sure I had great books to read. Because of that, I have 59 myself to going into the poorest communities in America and making sure k ids like me don’t get written off.

My first taste of success came way back at that summer camp. It came with a plate of steaming, hot biscuits that tasted so good 60 they could have brought a tear to your eye.
