A

A study of art history might be a good way to learn more about a culture than is possible to learn in general history classes. Most typical history courses concentrate on politics, economics and war. But art history focuses on much more than this because art reflects not only the political values of a people, but also religious beliefs, emotions and psychology. In addition, information about the daily activities of our ancestors can be provided by art. In short, art expresses the essential qualities of a time and a place, and a study of it clearly offers us a deeper understanding than can be found in most history books.

In history books, objective information about the political life of a country is presented; that is, facts about politics are given, but opinions are not expressed. Art, on the other hand, is subjective: it reflects personal emotions and opinions. The great Spanish painter Francisco Goya was perhaps the first truly ―political‖ artist. In his well-known painting The Third of May, 1808, he criticized the Spanish government for its abuse of power over people.

In the same way, art can reflect a culture’s religiou s beliefs. For hundreds of years in Europe, religious art had been almost the only type of art that existed. Churches and other religious buildings were filled with paintings that described people and stories from the Bible. Although most people couldn’t r ead, they could still understand the Bible stories in the pictures on church walls. By contrast, one of the main characteristics of art in the Middle East was(and still is)its absence of human and animal images. This reflects the Islamic belief that statues are not holy.

36. We learn from the first paragraph that _________.

A. history class concentrates on religious beliefs and emotion

B. history books focus on personal emotions and opinions

C. art history shows us something about emotions and beliefs

D. art history shows us nothing but the political values

37. It can be inferred from the text that _______.

A. history teachers must be quite subjective

B. artists paint people from the Bible to show their political beliefs

C. you can hardly find animal and human images in Islamic paintings

D. painters in Europe only painted Bible stories for centuries

38. Francisco Goya and his painting are used as an example to show________.

A. art is subjective, which is different from history books

B. Spanish government abused its power over people

C. in history books, facts about politics are given

D. Francisco Goya was the first ―political‖ artist

39. The text mainly discusses ________.

A. the development of art history

B. what can we learn from art

C. the influence of art on art history

D. the difference between general history and art history

B

Think of some of your favorite singers. When you listen, they can make you happy or sad, peaceful or angry. They can make you relax or want to get up and dance. Gifted singers have the power to affect us in many ways — emotionally, physically and mentally.

But becoming a great singer isn’t as easy as listening to o ne. It takes practice, devotion and strong lungs! Just ask the well-known American opera star Carol Vaness.

At the Metropolitan Opera in New York City where she often sings, Carol’s voice must be loud enough to be heard by four thousand people. It must reach every person in the theater, without a microphone, even when she’s singing softly. The reason Carol can project her voice that far is the way she breathes.

―When you breathe, it’s like a swimmer taking a deep breath before going underwater, ‖ Carol exp lains. ―You have to take a lot of air into your lungs.‖

According to Carol, the main difference between pop singing and opera is ―how you breathe, how much air you take in, and how you control it coming out. Regular singing is more like speaking, and it’s a lot softer. When I sing for children, they’re often surprised by how the vibrations(震动)strike their ears —like waves on a beach, ‖ Carol says. ―In opera, the air doesn’t just go out of your mouth — it vibrates in your chest, the way a guitar vibrates wh en it’s played.‖Ever since she started piano lessons at the age of ten, Carol has loved music. As she got older, she decided to become a music teacher. When she went to college, she took singing lessons as part of her studies. Her voice teacher discovered that nineteen-year-old Carol had an exceptionally beautiful soprano voice – the highest singing voice for women.

Carol decided to make opera her goal, not only because she loved to sing but also because she loved the drama. Opera is a play in which the characters sing the words instead of speaking them. The stories of opera can be tragic or comical. They can be personal stories about two people falling in love or grand stories about kings and queens who lived long ago. As the characters in an opera sing, the emotions expressed by words and music come to life.

Today, Carol performs throughout the United States and Europe and she has sung for almost twenty years. But she has never forgotten where she started singing in the first palace.

―Put your heart into your singing and enjoy it,‖ says Carol, ―because singing is a great joy. That’s why I sing. In fact, that’s why everybody sings.‖

Russian tradition orders that men should kiss each other three times on the cheeks at official functions. Now, a new ruling in Moscow is calling for politicians in the capital to stick to the old handshake. According to Britain's The Telegraph newspaper, politicians in Moscow have been told to stop kissing each other when they meet because the ―kissing ceremony‖ takes so long.

Leonid Brezhnev, the general secretary of the Communist Party from 1929 to 1932, was famous for treating male colleagues to a full lip-lock. One photograph of him kissing Erich Honecker, the leader of the Democratic Republic of Germany, was used for a protest painting on the Berlin Wall with the caption: "Oh, God, help me survive this deadly love".

Kissing three times on the cheeks at official occasions is a Russian tradition. The practice has been revived among high-ranking officials in the past years. In the distant past, a kiss from the tsar (emperor)was the highest sign of recognition. The Moscow ruling, however, has prompted authorities in other cities to consider banning the practice.

Alexei Kleshko, a parliament member in Siberia, said: ―Single-sex kisses should be avoided, including at official meetings. It's enough to shake hands. Of course, if one is talking about a long friendship or fatherly relations, it might be OK to embrace. But that's the maximum that should be allowed.‖

Another MP Vladimir Gorlov, said he only allowed himself to kiss the hand of a woman at work: "There are informal relations and there are meetings governed by protocol," he said. ―When a man is kissing another man at an official event, I have a negative attitude towards it. There are rules of decency. "

A. Kleshko is strongly against any kind of kiss

B. Kleshko is a man out of date

C. Gorlove shares the same view with Kleshko is single-sex kisses

D. Gorlove won’t kiss any man in any form

D

Winter’s short days are more than cold. For many people, winter depression, the most common type of Seasonal Affective Disorder(SAD), is as much a part of the season as hats and scarves(围巾).

Winter serious SAD sufferers may need medical treatment. Those feeling a little blue can help themselves by sticking to a healthy lifestyle. Here are some tips:

Pace yourself. Don’t expect to do everything you normally can. Set a realistic schedule. Don’t listen to negative thinking, like blaming yourself or expecting to fail.

Get involved in activities that make you feel good or feel like you’ve achieved something. For example, play table tennis or badminton.

If you are feeling depressed, you may feel like staying away from friends. Yet this is a time when friends support can be helpful. Call them regularly. Remember, the more we put off calling or visiting a friend, the harder it is to rebuild a friendship.

Think clearly about what’s wrong or right. Instead of giving in to vague feelings of sadness, look at your problems objectively. Break down problems into specific issues that you can work on.

Regular exercise helps to prevent and ease depression.

Eat well. Studies show that a healthy diet can help to maintain a healthy body and mind. The vitamins, minerals and micro-nutrients found in a balanced diet may help our bodies to produce feel-good hormones(荷尔蒙). Foods containing chemicals to help produce feel-good hormones include bananas, turkey, nuts and seeds. Eat at least five pieces of fruit and vegetables every day.

P.S. Symptoms(症状)of SAD:

No interests or pleasure in things you used to enjoy

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多于选项。(请把答案填在答案卷的横线上)

In so many ways, cyberspace mirrors the real world. People ask for information, play games, and share hobby tips. 51 Still others look for friendship, or even love.

Unlike the real world, however, your knowledge about a person is limited to words on a

computer screen. Identity and appearance mean very little in cyberspace. 52 So even the shyest person can become a chat-room star.

Usually, this ―faceless‖ communication doesn’t create problems. Identity doesn’t really matter when you’re in a chat room discussing politics or hobbies. In fact, this emphasis on the ideas themselves makes the Internet a great place for exciting conversation. 53 But some Internet users want more than just someone to chat with. 54 Is cyberspace

a good place to find love? That answer depends on whom you ask.

55 Others fail miserably.

A. Rather, a person’s thoughts—or at least the thoughts they type—are what really count.

B. Others buy and sell products.

C. They’re looking for serious love relationships.

D. But cyberspace is different from the real world in some aspects.

E. Some of these relationships actually succeed.

F. Where else can so many people come together to chat?

G. Chatting online isn’t always reliable.

The center of public life is St. Mark’s Square where tourists and citizens sit in the famous Florian and Quadri cafes to listen to music, enjoying themselves. The Quadri is more popular but the Florian, founded in 1720, is the best-known cafe because it has received such great persons as Byron (an English poet) and Goethe (a German poet).
