Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.

Modern Elementary Schools

By the early twentieth century, most school systems had built upon the recommendations of the Committee of Ten. Elementary schools were divided into eight grades and taught basic reading, spelling, and arithmetic. They were centralized to serve children from several neighborhoods or districts. A few larger schools were less expensive to run than many small ones. By 1920, many children rode to school on buses.

In each grade, students were taught a curriculum that became increasingly complex. Basic subjects included reading, writing, geography, and spelling. Memorization and drills were still used. For example, mastering a Shakespearean soliloquy(独白) was considered training for the mind. Penmanship was also stressed as a skill useful for office work. Although the fountain pen and the typewriter had both been invented in 1829, pens far outnumbered typewriters.

Helping students to be healthy and alert was another goal of schools. In many classrooms, there were mid-morning or mid-afternoon stretching exercises. In physical education classes, structured exercises were taught. In 1918, an international flu epidemic struck the United States. One out of four Americans eventually caught the life-threatening disease. Good health habits became vital.

As public school students moved through the grades, they were taught to follow a

standard set of rules for behavior. They were taught to go to school every day and to arrive on time. Although poorer districts could not afford full school days, the average school day ran from 8 A.M. to 4 P.M. The average number of days in the school year had increased from forty-five in 1870 to ninety by 1918.

To keep order, some teachers used corporal, or physical, punishment. They had various devices to discipline a child, including paddles and rulers. These items hung in the classroom to remind students of what happened if they disobeyed the teacher. Corporal punishment decreased as the twentieth century progressed.

31. According to the passage, elementary schools taught many basic subjects EXCEPT ________.

A. reading

B. history

C. arithmetic

D. spelling

32. What was stressed at school as useful skill for office work?

A. Penmanship

B. Writing

D. Memorization

33. Which of the following was one of the goals for elementary schools mentioned in the passage?

A. To teach students rules of behaviors.

B. To keep the order of the school.

C. To maintain the health of the students.

D. To cultivate good study habits.

34. The word “discipline” in the fifth paragraph is closest in meaning to “________”.

A. punish

B. threaten

C. warn

D. train

35. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A. Students had to do many physical exercises to keep healthy.

Last summer, Transportation Secretary Elizabeth Dole announced a new seatbelt-use rule: all the drivers and front passengers will be fined if they don’t wear seat belts after April 1989.

More than 30,000 drivers and front seat passengers are killed or 38 injured each year. A 39 of only 30 miles per hour is the same as falling from a third-floor window. Wearing a seat belt saves lives; it 40 your chance of death or serious injury by more than half.

41 , drivers or front seat passengers over 14 in most vehicles must wear a seat belt. If you do not, you could be fined up to $50. It will not be up to the drivers to make sure you wear your belt. 43 , you do not have to wear a seat belt if you are reversing your vehicle; or you are making a local delivery or collection using a special vehicle; or if you have a valid medical certificate which excuses you from wearing it. Passage One

Questions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage.

One of the most popular literary figures in American literature is a woman who spent almost half of her life in China, a country on a continent thousands of miles from the United States. In her life time she earned his country’s most highly acclaimed l iterary award, the Pulitzer Prize, and also the most prestigious form of literary recognition in the world, the Nobel Prize for Literature. Pearl S. Buck was almost a household word throughout much of her lifetime because of her prolific output, which consisted of some eighty-five published works, including several dozen novels, six collections of short stories, fourteen books for children, and more than a dozen works of nonfiction. When she was eighty years old, some twenty-five volumes were awaiting publication. Many of those books were set in China, the land in which she spent so much of her life. Her books and her life served as a bridge between the cultures of the East and the West. As the product of those two cultures she became, as she described herse lf, “mentally bifocal”. Her unique background made her into an unusually interesting and versatile human being. As we examine the life of Pearl Buck, we cannot help but be aware that we are in fact meeting three separate people: a wife and mother, an internationally famous writer, and a humanitarian and philanthropist. One cannot really get to know Pearl Buck without learning about each of the three. Though honored in her lifetime with the William Dean Howell Medal of the American Academy of Arts and Letters in addition to the Nobel and Pulitzer Prizes, Pearl Buck as a total human being, not only a famous author, is a captivating subject of study.

46. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the passage?

A) To offer a criticism of the works of Pearl Buck.

B) To illustrate Pearl Buck’s views on Chinese literature.

C) To illustrate the background and diverse interests of Pearl Buck.

A) wrote extensively about a very different culture

B) published half of her books abroad

C) won more awards than any other woman of her time

D) achieved her first success very late in life

48. According to the passage, Pearl Buck described herself as “mentally bifocal” to suggest

that she was ______.

A) capable of resolving the differences between two distinct linguistic systems

B) keenly aware of how the past could influence the future

C) capable of producing literary works of interest to both adults and children

D) equally familiar with two different cultural environments

49. The word “prolific” in Line 6 is closest in meaning to which of the following?

A) influential. B) impressive. C) fruitful. D) outstanding.

B) Pearl Buck won several literary awards for her works.

C) Pearl Buck knew both American and Chinese cultures very well.

D) One has to study the different aspects of Pearl Buck in order to understand her well.

Passage Two

Questions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage.

Are organically grown foods the best food choices? The advantages claimed for such foods over conventionally grown and marketed food products are now being debated. Advocates of organic foods – a term whose meaning varies greatly – frequently proclaim that such products are safer and more nutritious than others.

The growing interest of consumers in the safety and nutritional quality of the typical North American diet is a welcome development. However, much of this interest has been sparked by sweeping claims that the food supply is unsafe or inadequate in meeting nutritional needs. Although most of these claims are not supported by scientific evidence, the preponderance (优势) of written material advancing such claims makes it difficult for the general public to separate fact from fiction. As a result, claims that eating a diet consisting entirely of organically grown foods prevents or cures disease or provides other benefits to health have become widely publicized and formed the basis for folklore.

Almost daily the public is besieged (围攻) by claims for “no-aging” diets, new vitamins and other wonder foods. There are numerous unsubstantiated reports that natural vitamins are superior to synthetic ones, that fertilized eggs are nutritionally superior to unfertilized eggs, that untreated grains are better than fumigated grains, and the like.

One thing that most organically grown food products seem to have in common is that they cost more than conventionally grown foods. But in many cases consumers are mislead if they believe organic food can maintain health and provide better nutritional quality than conventionally grown foods. So there is real cause for concern if consumers, particularly those with limited incomes, distrust the regular food supply and buy only expensive organic foods instead.

51. The word “advocate” in Line 2, Para. 1 is closest in meaning to which of the following?

A) proponents. B) merchants. C) inspectors. D) consumers.

52. According to the first paragraph, which of the following is true about the term “organic

foods”?

A) It is accepted by most nutritionists. B) It has been used only in recent years.

C) It has no fixed meaning. D) It is seldom used by consumers.

53. The author implies that there is cause for concern if consumers with limited incomes

buy organic foods instead of conventionally grown foods because ______.

A) organic foods can be more expensive but are often no better than conventionally

grown foods

B) many organic foods are actually less nutritious than similar conventionally grown

foods

C) conventionally grown foods are more readily available than organic foods

D) too many farmers will stop using conventional methods to grow food crops

54. From the last paragraph, consumers who believe that organic foods are better than

conventionally grown foods are often ______.

A) careless B) mistaken C) thrifty D) wealthy

55. What is the author’s attitude toward the claims made by advocates of health foods?

A) Very enthusiastic. B) Favorable. C) Neutral. D) Doubtful.
