2. Planning a composition

(1) Discovering useful material

A quick list of brainstorm on subject of “television programs” might look like this:

(2) Deciding on the thesis statement

The Benefits of Television

We hear a lot of negative effects of television on the viewer. Obviously, television can be harmful if it is watched to the exclusion of other activities. It would be just as harmful as to eat constantly. However, when television is watched in moderation, it is extremely valuable, as it provides relaxation, entertainment, and education.

E.g.

Nuclear power is good for the human kind.

The traffic accident caused two deaths and five injuries.

Students should be encouraged to do part-time jobs during vacation; though some of the part-time jobs are not fit for young college students.

My brother taught me many things about living in this world.

A task for the students to fulfill: (Direction: The students are asked to write an outline on the topic of “The Vocational Choice after Graduation-Being a Teacher”. Thesis: I have decided to be a teacher after gr aduation because of the vocational “stableness,” the enviable two vacations, and particularly the strong sense of achievement and success to be experienced in the teaching career.)

The Vocational Choice after Graduation

Like all other senior students, I have an important decision to make upon graduation; that is, what job I am going to take up as my life career. For a student majoring in English, I have a wide range of choice to make. However, considering the vocational “stableness”, the two enviable vacations, and particularly the sense of achievement to be experienced in the teaching career, I have finally decided to be a teacher after my graduation.

Current United States law does disturbingly little to protect our right to privacy.

(4) The most important day I remember in all my life is the one on which my teacher, Anne Mansfield Sullivan, came to me. I am filled with wonder when I consider the immeasurable contrast between the two lives which it connects. It was the third of March, 1887; three months before I was seven years old. (1) With an emphatic summary

In conclusion, let me again remind you, as parents, that teaching social responsibility is not completely a function of the schools. It is a process that must begin in the home and continue throughout the child’s formal schooling. The teacher cannot be a parent, a policeman, a psychologist, and still be expected to teach fundamental skills. Social responsibility must be brought from the home to the classroom, and, unless this happens, learning cannot take place in our schools.

(2) With a quotation

(6) With a figurative language

In many ways, no doubt, our world grows more and more complex, and sputniks cannot be simple; yet how many of our complexities remain futile, how many of our artificialities false. Simplicity too can be subtle—as the straight lines of a Greek temple, like the Parthenon at Athens, are delicately curved in order to look straighter still.
