The Fourth Day

Summary,

After the author graduated from the eighth grade, she had her first trip to Washington with her family, but this was an unpleasant trip for her.

On the way to Washington, the author's mother made lots of delicious food for her family, but the author wanted to eat in the dining car. Her mother refused her request for the reason that the food was very expensive. The big problem for them was that Black people were not allowed to eat into railroad dining cars. And the author remembered that her sister suffered this treat before. But outside the window, all of the people were celebrating the Fourth of July. For the author, this is a big sarcasm for Black people.

When her family arrived at Washington, they had a large room. But the author was in agony, because she was not allowed to sing in the auditorium.

There was another bad thing happened to her. When her family went to buy some drinking, they were not allowed to settle at the White counter.

All of the things happened to the author made her angry, so she decided to write an angry letter to the President.

Response,

There is a long history to show the discrimination between the Black people and White people, and there were also many war fares for freedom and independence. Maybe we can't realize the pain of the author, but every country exist discrimination. In China, some national minority was discriminated by Han people. For example, in some restaurant, the national minority was not allowed to arrive. And in some areas, women were not allowed to eat around the same table with men. I hate all of the "roles". Maybe it is same to the author. But I still believe all the people in the world will have the equal position in the future.

Champion of the World

Summary,

In the passage, the author tells us the process that a Black boy won the champion of world by boxing. But the main point is that the author use rough words to describe the expression of the people who wedged in the walls of the Store, when they were listening the radio of boxing math.

When the radio turned on, the air between them was tight. And when their hero, Louis, nearly went down, they became worried and painful. But when the contender was down, they selfishly hoped he could

not stand up again. Finally, Louis won the Champion of world. All of them were really happy, because it was not only a victory for himself, also a victory for Black people.

Response:

After reading this passage, I feel a strong sense of ethnic pride. Before attending college, I always feel this sense from watching TV. I can express my emotion of our nation according to the victory and failure of Chinese people. I am glad to be a student of Yunnan Normal University, because last year there was a match between Chinese students and Vietnamese students, and it was held in our college. Luckily, I saw the match. I was proud of Chinese students. They won in the match. I remembered I cheered and clapped like a mad woman at that time.

I believe everyone has the sense of ethnic pride. And they express by their own ways. If one lost this sense, he will be a homeless child.

No Name Woman

Summary,

In this passage, it mainly told us that the author’s mother told her a story about her aunt to let her keep self-esteem and self-love. Her husband left her away. But she had been pregnant one day. Although it was immoral in that time, she still determined to give birth to the baby. On the birth night of the day, the people living in the town come to accuse her of her behave. They destroyed or brought many things in the house

just to find her. Finally, they failed. She gave birth to the baby smoothly in the pigsty. But the next morning, we found her and her baby in the will.

Response,

On the one hand, I think the people living in the down are indifferent. Although the author’s aunt did an error which we could tolerate, we should not have forced her to suicide. There are many other ways to punish her.

On the other hand, if I were her aunt, I would not suicide. When she determined to give birth to the baby, she should imagine the result. She should hold on whatever difficult she met. And as is known to us, the life is worthless. The mother has the right to give the baby life, but she does not have the right to kill it. Therefore, I think her aunt will live an happy life. If she holds on, maybe the people will change their mind some day. We should believe that nothing is impossible.

A Hanging

Summary,

This passage mainly described the plot of hanging a prisoner who was a Hindu. And the author emphasized the calm of the prisoner and the cruel of warders; they continued to hang other people. And then, they laughed, drank, and ate.

Response,

The hanging of prisoners is very cruel, I think. But I am moved by

the attitude of the prisoner. Faced with death, he still kept calm. Nowadays, many people become nervous to speak clearly. We all know that success depends on attitude, so we should hold on optimistic attitude to everything.

Shooting an Elephant

Summary,

The story told us that the main character did not want to shoot the elephant because they are not aggressive for people. But he was a present of White people to shoot the elephants and there are many Black people following him. He did not want to lose face ay that time. Finally, he shoot the elephant.

Response,

Animals are natural resources that people have wasted all through our history. Animals have been killed for their fur and feathers, for food, for sport, and simply because they were in the way. But Every animal has its place in the balance of nature. Destroying one kind of animal can create many problems. Luckily, some people are working to help save the animals. Some groups raise money to let people know about the problem. And they try to get the governments to pass laws protecting animals in danger. Quite a few countries have passed laws. These laws forbid the killing of any animal or plant on the danger list. Slowly, the number of some animals in danger is growing.

Bumping into Mr. Ravioli

Summary,

When the author’s daughter was three years old, she had an imaginary friend. And she always told the author thought maybe his daughter felt very lonely because her elder brother had no time to play with her. So he asked help of one of his sisters, who was a developed psychologist. With her sister’s explanation, he knew it was normal for his daughter to have that behaves. Having an imaginary friend is a good way for her to understand how to organize her experience into stories confidently.

Response,

After reading this passage, I find there are a lot of tasks and stress for modern children. For example, in the passage, his daughter’s elder brother did not have time to play with her because he should attend many classes and finish many tasks arranged by his parents. In our life, it is easy to see a little child with a heavy schoolbag. After school, the children should finish all kinds of homework. On their spare time, they should attend cram schools or acquire anther skills, such as piano, painting and so on. In their life, they don’t have holiday, vacation, and spare time. All of them are under stress. I know most parents wish to push their children to live a good life after they grow up. But I think it is not

the best way to force children to learn everything that parents have arranged because it is impossible to kill their precious creation and imagination. So I hope all the parents can realize the important point and give the time and freedom back to children.

But she persisted in study finished it. She met difficulty again when she searched for job, so she quitted from the world of music as a model. A few years later, she found that she still loved music. She played cello again with the help of her mother and stepfather. Then, she got her chance for performance. Finally, she became a famous person like her father.

Response,

After reading this passage, it is impressed on me that father plays an important role in our life.

My father is not a famous person. He is just a farmer. But he plays

an important role in my life. In my memory, when I was a little girl, I was not so confident that I dare not do many things, even taking with a stranger. With his encouragement, I took my first step to talk with others. He always told me that whatever I met difficulty, the family will support me; whenever I felt heartbroken, the family will give me warm-hands, and even though all the people in the world deserted me, they loved me all the way. After that, I dare to do what I want because I know I have my family, and I have my father.

高英2的问题的答案

Lesson1 1.What, according to the writer, makes good conversation?what spoils it? A good conversation does not really start from anywhere, and no one has any idea where it will go. A good conversation is not for making a point. Argument may often be a part of it, but the purpose of the argument is not to convince. When people become serious and talk as if they have something very important to say, when they argue to convince or to win their point, the conversation is spoilt. 2. Why does the writer like “bar conversation” so much? The writer likes bar conversation very much because he has spent a lot of time in pubs and is used to this kind of conversation. Bar friends are companions, not intimates. They are friends but not intimate enough to be curious about each other's private life and thoughts. 3.Does a good conversation need a focal subject? No. Conversation does not need a focus. But when a focal subject appears in the natural flow of conversation, the conversation becomes vivid, lively and more interesting. 4. Why did people in the pub talk about Australia? Why did the conversation turn to Norman England? The people talked about Australia because the speaker who introduced the subject mentioned incidentally that it was an Australian who had given her such a definition of "the King's English. " When the people talked about the resistance in the lower classes to any attempt by an upper class to lay down rules for "English as it should be spoken", the conversation moved to Norman England because at that time a language barrier existed between the Saxon peasants and the Norman conquerors. 5. How does the use of words show class distinction? The Saxon peasants and their Norman conquerors used different words for the same thing. For examples see paragraph 9. 6. When was “the King’s English” regarded as a form of racial discrimination in England? The King’s English” was regarded as a form 0f racial discrimination during the Norman rule in England about 1154—1399. 7.What is the attitude of the writer towards “the King’s English”? The writer thinks “the King’s English” is a class representation of reality.1t is worth trying to speak “the King’s English”,but it should not be 1aid down as an edict, and made immune to change from below. The King’s English is a model a rich and instructive one- but it ought not to be an ultimatum. 8.What does the writer mean when he says, “the King’s English, like the Anglo-French of the Normans,is a class representation of reality? During the Norman period, the ruling class spoke Anglo— French while the peasants spoke their native Saxon language. Language bears the stamp of the class that uses it.The King’s English today refers to the language used by the upper, educated class in England. Lesson2 1 Like other good writers,Orwll is good at showing rather than telling what details or examples does the writer use to show how poor the natives in Marrakech were. Beyond choice of words and imagery ,Orwell successfully depicts the poverty of the inhabitants of Marrakech by describing objectively the various aspects of their life. His vivid objective descriptions give the reader a clear picture of the poverty of the people. Here are five things he describes to show poverty- (a) the burial of the poor inhabitants (b)an Arab Navvy, an employee of the municipality, begging for a piece of bread (c)the miserable lives of the Jews in the ghettoes~ (d)cultivation of the poor soil; (e) the old women carrying firewood. 2. What’s the main idea of paragraphs 1-2?How were people buried in Marrakech? What does this show? In these two paragraphs, Orwell tells us how people are buried in Marrakech—the crowd of mourners wailing a chant, corpses wrapped in a piece of rag, carried on a rough wooden bier, friends hacking a shallow hole, throwing the body in it, flinging some dried—up earth over it, no grave stone. All these show a vivid picture of the poverty of the place.
