I've been taking these courses.M:Why, I can't cook at all. Can't even boil an egg.W:No kidding? Of course only light can travel that fast.W : Yeah. I know, Bob. But it is still incredible When an astronaut lands on the moon within seconds we on earth can see it happen. The people here in Australia see it at the same moment they see it in the U.S. It's wonderful.M : Maybe it's wonderful. I know very well it is a fact. All over the planet we can see the same things at the same time -someone moving on the moon or playing a soccer game or we can even watch the same war, if we like.W : That's awful.M : What? Soccer?W : You know very well what I mean. The war. It's awful to have a war on television. Sometimes they eat dinner while they watch.W : I don't believe that.M : The trouble with you is that you have many opinions about things but you don't look at facts. You don't see what you don't want to see.

正确答案:Some 10 million.

题目详解:[听力原文]The breach of the university's online application database exposed "dozens" of records to unauthorized individuals, said Katharine Harrington, USC dean of

admissions and financial aid. She could not be more specific about the number of people whose personal data may have been viewed by the hacker or what their motivation was for the computer break-in. The university was not able to identify exactly which records may have been exposed. The site will be back up once new security measures are taken, the university said in a written statement. A California law that took effect two years ago requires institutions to inform those affected when their personal information has been stolen or accidentally released. A number of states are considering similar legislation, and a bill is pending in the U.S. Senate that would also require institutions to tell people when the privacy of their personal information has been compromised. Consumer advocates say such notification is important because it provides an opportunity for consumers to put a fraud alert on their credit file. Identity theft is the top consumer fraud com- plaint, according to the Federal Trade Commission, which estimates that some 10 million people are affected each year.

This problem is partly caused by all the abandoned cars on the streets. It has been estimated by A to Z Towing, Inc., a nationwide tow-truck agency, that over one million cars are abandoned on the streets and alleyways of the nation's cities. Each year, approximately a third of those cars are removed and destroyed. The rest of the cares which are not removed take up parking spaces and make neighborhoods look rundown. In Boston the problem has been dealt with by a non-profit governmental agency called Street Horizons, which uses the money from the recycling of the metal in the cares to pay for the most cost of towing them. The program in Boston sounds good although it has not completely reached financial independence from the federal government yet. Until a truly self- sufficient program for removing old cars is developed, it will remain a serious problem.

In fact I need to finish early because I'm going over to the psychology department to talk to Professor Smith about a job opening.M:You mean a job on campus?W:Yeah. And it sounds pretty interesting. It involves helping with your study on learning style. You know, about how some people learn best by sight, while others learn best by hearing or touch.M:Yeah. I know that's an area of expertise.W:Right. Anyway for her study she's taking some high school students who aren't doing very well in their classes and testing them to find out what their learning styles are. Then tutors, people like me, will work with them presenting material to them in their particular learning style.M:Hey. That is interesting. Now will you mostly do the testing or the tutoring?W:Both I hope. I want to be involved from start to finish.M:Are you getting paid for this?W:I'm sure we'll get something though, probably not much. Anyway it doesn't matter to me, I just want to have some hands-on experience.M:Yeah. And it'll be nice to help those high school students too.W:That's what I thought when I saw the ad. You know you could do it too. You don't have to be in her classes to work on the study.M:Really? Do you have any idea what the schedule is like?W:Late afternoon then evening for tutoring I think. After all the kids are in regular classes until three thirty.M:Actually that's perfect for

me.W : Then come along. We will save the lab report for later. But we'd better make sure we do a good job on our experiment first.M : Yeah. First thing's first.

题目详解:原文中有“The author of the original novel,Michael Crichton, was predicted to earn US $20 million on his share of the profits”一句。[听力原文] F:Tom, have you seen The Fifth Element?M:Yes. I think the pictures are beautiful. And I know some reviewer observed that this movie might actually be a milestone in movie making. It took US $17 million on its first weekend, a more than respectable total.F:Oh? They really said so ? But I think it's storyless movie, although it's a big budget one. Don't you think it resembles video games? The crafted aliens, a deafening sound track, and striking minor characters-- it has no coherent story to hang it all on.M:I quite agree with you. Story is the soul of a meaningful film, the key to involving the audience emotionally.F:I used to like Steven Spielberg. His work had always been a balance of story and technical things. But in his most recent movie, The Lost World, the sequel to Jurassic Park, the story is almost an afterthought to the spectacle. The dinosaurs are rediscovered and again eat a lot of people, while character development hardly gets a look in. The film simply relies on action to keep the drama going.M:But thanks to a US $40 million marketing campaign, The Lost world broke all box office records for its first four days and Steven Spielberg was tipped to earn from the movie far more than the US $300 million he collected from Jurassic Park. The author of the original novel, Michael Crichton, was predicted to earn

US $20 million on his share of the profits.F:So the success of such films is measured simply on their profit margin. Fillmmaking is not considered as a form of art now.

正确答案:Because its approach to teaching was conservative.

题目详解:[听力原文]The Royal Academy of Arts, or as it is often abbreviated, the RA, was founded in 1768 by a group of artists headed by portrait painter Joshua Reynolds. Under Reynolds, the Academy functioned as a school aimed at teaching drawing, painting, and sculpture to young artists. The Academy had its roots in private English schools of art popular in the early part of the 18th century. Academy classes were provided free of charge, and scholarships were available to help needy students and to provide opportunities to pursue studies abroad. Lacking royal funding, the Academy survived by charging attendance fees for public exhibitions of work by members. The Royal Academy has extended its mandate over the years since its founding. Now, in addition to teaching classes, the RA hosts regular exhibitions of art work drawn from around the world. As such, it is one of the most prestigious art galleries in the world, and it continues its instruction of approximately 60 young and aspiring artists each year. Although the RA has been criticized in the past for its conservative approach, it remains one of the most influential teaching and exhibition centres of the art world.

They cried out to Moses, their leader, for the foods they loved: leeks (韭菜), onions, and garlic. The Romans, like the Israelites, loved to eat garlic. And they hung bags of garlic around their necks. _____(46) They also thought it would keep them from getting sick. A similar idea is still held. Many people take garlic thinking it will prevent or cure disease. Most doctors say it does no such thing. _____(47) Its smell may force people to stay far apart. At least then they can't pass germs on to each other. _____(48) What if you're in a play, for instance? Actors have been known to forget their lines because they couldn't stand the garlic smell on a fellow actor's breath. Some have even made up new lines and actions that kept them far away from the one who had eaten garlic. Through the years man has tried to cope with the smell of garlic. _____(49) We now know why. It's been found that the oils of the garlic do not stick to the teeth, Garlic tongue, or gums (齿龈). They go into the lungs instead. From there they are breathed out. They pass out through the skin too. Strange as it seems, food may have a great deal of garlic in it without smelling or tasting strong. It all depends on how it is cooked. French cooks make a good soup with whole cloves (瓣) of garlic. They use more than thirty cloves in one bowl of soup. But they take care not to crush them. And they cook them whole. _____(50) And as the cloves cook they change in some strange way. The soup turns out to be delicious. It's not strong at all. A But no medicine, mouthwash, chewing gum, or toothpaste seems to help much B As a result, the strong oils stay in the cloves. C They say it may help in one way, though. D Many people eat garlic. E But keeping your distance can be hard at times.
