Brown is deeply religious, and this astonishing step came to him one day when he was struck by a strong feeling that he had a purpose beyond s ports. “ Farming chose me; it was my culling in life," he says.

Only one problem : Jas on didn’t know the first thing about farming. So he did what all fresh hands do today—watcher I hours of YouTube videos. Then lie. partnered with another local farm that helped him plant fields of sweet potatoes. He named his land First Fruits Farm.

In carly fall of 2014, the first harvest was ready. Fifty pickup trucks from food pantries and churches arrived at the farm mi(l loaded up 120 ,000 pounds to distribute locally. In 2015 , First Fruits Farm expanded its sweet potato donations to food banks across eastern North Carolina.
