The Crocodile Hunter was probably the most loved conservationist that this world

has ever known. In 2006 my dad came up to me and told me that the Crocodile Hunter

was dead. I thought that it was a big joke. However, I soon found that it was all very real. He was my favorite television character and really the only conservationist that I

really liked to watch.

Steve Irwin was a true Australian. He was born into a family of conservationist so I think that it was only natural that he would follow in his parents' footsteps. The first

time he wrestled a crocodile, he was nine years old (under his father- s supervision of course) and he soon went on to capture crocodiles that ended up in over populated areas.

He did his work for free with the agreement that all the crocodiles that he captured

could be taken to the Australia Zoo (a family owned zoo).

He started to appear on television and that was when he started to win the hearts

and minds of the people. His love and enthusiasm for the animals he worked with soon

won the public over.

One thing that I always greatly appreciated about him was the fact that he would

tell about the animal. Instead of going into how the crocodile or whatever evolved over millions of years and so on, he would point out interesting features and then release him back into the wild. The whole time he would actually entertain you, not bore you like so many of the television programs on animals.

Since his death, there have been many things done in his honor, but I believe that what we can do to best remember him and what he lived for would be to love and take

care of the natural world around us.

4. What does the underlined word "it" in the first paragraph mean?

A. The story told by the father.

B. The joke about hunting.

C. The death of the Hunter.

D. The speech on TV.

5. According to Paragraph 2, we can learn that _ .

A. Steve Irwin hunted crocodiles to protect people

B. Steve Irwin-s family guided him to be a conservationist

C. Steve Irwin captured crocodiles for his family owned zoo

D. Steve Irwin wrestled a crocodile after he was ten years old

6. Steve Irwin won the public over because .

A. he was enthusiastic about the job

B. he released crocodiles back into the wild

C. he taught people about crocodiles on TV

D. he took crocodiles away from over populated areas

7. What is the author-s attitude towards what Steve Irwin did?

A. Doubtful.

B. Disapproving.

C. Positive.

D. Uncaring.

Reality TV has been charged with making the nation silly, but a study suggests

part of its shows could be good for children.

Massey University PhD student Jacinta Hawkins looked at the influence of TV programs on kids health knowledge, attitudes and behavior. She said programs which showed overweight people, such as The Biggest Loser, seemed to be putting children

off eating junk food. "The appearance of overweight people on TV is making children say' I don't want to grow up like that'. "

The research was part of Ms Hawkins paper on how schools improve health. She spoke t0 92 children, aged from 7 to 13, from six Auckland primary schools to find out how they received information on nutrition and physical activity. Some said they learnt from TV news programs, but most of them mentioned reality shows such as Fat Chance, Honey We-re Killing the Kids and Downsize Me.

"Earlier studies had looked at the effect junk-food advertising had on children," Ms Hawkins said, "but messages within TV programs had not been explored. "Children

from the six schools largely recognized program content, rather than advertising, as a source of food and physical activity messages. They are learning habits of eating and exercise from TV programs.

The children also recognized that their parents had a role to play in shaping health behavior. Talking about Honey We- re Killing the Kids, which shows how people will look if they continue with good habits, children said they developed attitudes from their family's habits. Ms Hawkins said children remembered what they had seen and thought

it was the parents' duty to lead by example.

8. What did Hawkins think of reality TV?

A. It may let kids know more about science.

B. The TV shows may let kids form bad habits.

C. It may have a bad influence on kids studies.

D. Some shows may help kids eat more healthily.

9. In what way did Hawkins get her findings?

A. Doing experiments.

B. Studying science fiction.

C. Interviewing the students.

D. Comparing previous studies.

10. According to the children, . played an important part in their health behavior?

A. school rules

B. family members

C. their friends

D. scientific report

11. What is the best title for this passage?

A. Reality TV Can Be Good.

B. Eating Habits of Children.

C. Children-s Health Behavior.

D. The programs Make the Nation Silly.

D

When dogs get lonely, they like keeping themselves busy by making a big mess

around the house, and that is really unacceptable to their owners. That's why one

German radio host, who also happens to be a dog owner came up with the idea for a

program designed to relax dogs and make them feel like they aren-t alone.

When 30-year-old Stephan Stock, a radio host at Radio Ton,in Germany's Baden- Wurttemberg region, announced the creation of a program aimed at dogs, everyone

thought it was just a clever April Fools trick. However, it wasn-t. For the past three

and a half months, Hallo Hasso has been pumping out music for lonely dogs both on the

radio and online.

Stock says he was inspired to create the special program by his pet dog, Layla, who would sometimes get so bored when left alone that she would keep herself busy by

making a big mess around the house. He and his colleagues at Radio Ton started

researching what kind of music usually appeals to dogs, and learned that it should have

as little drum and electric guitar as possible, and should be very slow.

“It's not about keeping dogs quiet, "Stock said about Hallo Hasso. "It,s more

about the dog feeling he's not alone. ”He adds that Layla isn-t as restless since

listening to Hallo Hasso, and has become relatively quiet, even letting him take a nap

(打盹儿)to the music from the radio.

Hallo Hasso is only available in Baden-Wurttemberg, via radio, but if you'd like to

see if it can calm your four-legged pet, the program can also be accessed online here.

Just press the "play" arrow at the top of the page and let the music work its magic. If

this doesn-t work, there's always Dog TV.

12. When dogs get lonely, they usually____.

A. sit quietly

B.lie lonely

C. bite the things around

D. make the house untidy

13. How did people think of Stock's announcement of a program for dogs?

A. They were interested in it.

B.They thought highly of it.

C. They took it seriously.

D. They took it as a joke.

14. What can we know about Hallo Hasso from the text?

A. It-s based on Stock's own life experience.

B. Its purpose is to keep dogs quiet.

C. It has no limit on music types.

D. It-s accessible only by radio.

15. Where is the passage most probably taken from?

A. In a textbook.

B.On a website.

C. In a newspaper.

D. In a pet magazine.

Loving others is easy, but loving yourself can be one of the hardest things in this

大一期末考试英语试题

01 Passage 1 Hypnotism (催眠术) is very old. Thousands of years ago people started to use it in Egypt. The use of hypnotism has grown very much since that time. Today, doctors and scientists are in almost every country hypnotize people to help them with their problems. What is hypnotism, and how does it work? Many people think that a hypnotist puts people to sleep. Then he makes the hypnotized people do strange things. This is not what a hypnotist does. Hypnotism is really just a way to relax the mind and body. What are some of the uses of hypnotism? We go to a hypnotist because w e have a problem. The problem makes us unhappy. The hypnotist asks us to think hard about something and relax. When we are relaxed, t he hypnotist gives us some ideas to help us with our problems. Hypnotism can help people to remember things. The police sometimes ask hypnotists to help them. For example, a man sees an accident. He forgets the license number of the car he sees. If he is hypnotized he may remember it. The police can then find the car and catch the driver. People who are hypnotized can also make mistakes or say something that isn't true. People remember what they think they saw. That may not be what really happened. The police don't hypnotize people who do something wrong. Why not? People who are hypnotized may say something that isn't true. A person who has done something bad has a good reason to say something that isn't true. 1. Hypnotist helps people by ____. [A] putting them to sleep [B] helping them to get relaxed [C] offering his ideas about their problems [D] making them forget their problems 2. When hypnotized, some people may say something that is not true, because ____. [A] they do not remember what has happened [B] they remember what they think has happened [C] they do not know what has happened [D] they are not interested in what has happened 3. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?____ [A] Hypnotism is very different form what it used to be. [B] When a person is hypnotized, his body gets relaxed, while his mind works hard. [C] Hypnotism is much more widely used today than it was thousands of years ago. [D] When hypnotized, a person will do something strange. 4. The passage mainly talks about ____. [A] how hypnotism works [B] the development of hypnotism [C] the use of hypnotism [D] the wonder of hypnotism

Despite differences m decoration and price, one thing most hotels have in common is a set of rules. Failure to obey these rules can result in fees or fines to cover hotel room damages, removal from the hotel or possibly even arrest. Smoking Some hotels are completely non-smoking. Some hotels designate smoking and non-smoking rooms. If you smoke in a non-smoking room, you will likely be fined hundreds of dollars and possibly asked to leave. Number of Guests Most regular hotel rooms are designed for two adults. If you have more than two people staying in the room, the hotel will likely charge an additional fee for each extra guest, though some hotels let children stay free. Do not put more than four adults in the room unless the hotels policy permits that many people. Or you might be fined or removed from the hotel Hotel Reservations Requirements Most hotels require a major credit card to reserve the room. You can pay cash at the end of your stay, but do not be surprised if there is a temporary charge on your card for a few days after your stay. Most hotels authorize a security deposit on your card to cover any possible damages to the room. Once the hotel confirms that the room is undamaged and that you do not break any hotel policies, your security deposit will be refunded. Breaking the Law You cannot break the law in your hotel room, just as you cannot break the law in your own home or in public. Do not do drugs or commit any other criminal act in the hotel room. If you do, you will likely be arrested. Noise Most hotels have a noise policy you must obey. If you are being too loud you will usually get a warning. If the noise continues and more complaints are issued, you will likely be kicked out of the hotel, regardless of what time it is. 21. What is the main purpose of this passage?
