In 1978, I was 18 and was working as a nurse in a small town about 270 kms away from Sydney, Australia. I was looking forward to having five days off from duty. Unfortunately, the only one train a day back to my home in Sydney had already left. So I thought I’d hitch a ride.

I waited by the side of the highway for three hours but no one stopped for me. Finally, a man walked over and introduced himself as Gordon. He said that although he couldn’t give me a lift, I should come back to his house for lunch. He noticed me standing for hours in the November heat and thought I must be hungry. I was doubtful as a young girl but he assured (使…放心)me I was safe, and he also offered to help me find a lift home afterwards. When we arrived at his house, he made us sandwiches. After lunch, he helped me find a lift home.

Twenty-five years later, in 2003, while I was driving to a nearby town one day, I saw an elderly man standing in the glaring heat, trying to hitch a ride. I thought it was another chance to repay someone for the favour I’d been given decades earlier.

I pulled over and picked him up. I made him comfortable on the back seat and offered him some water.

After a few moments of small talk, the man said to me, “You haven’t changed a bit, even your red hair is still the same.” I couldn’t remember where I’d met him. He then told me he was the man who had given me lunch and helped me find a lift all those years ago. It was Gordon.

26. The reason why the author offered a lift to the elderly man was that ______.

A. she realized he was Gordon

B. she had known him for decades

C. she wanted to repay the favour she once got

D. she was going to the nearby town

27. What does the author want to tell the readers through the story?

A. Those who give rides will be repaid.

B. Giving sometimes produces nice results.

C. Good manners bring about happiness.

D.People should offer free rides to others.

C

Charles Revson, founder of the successful cosmetic (化妆品) firm Revlon, once said, “In our factory we make lipstick. In our advertising, we sell hope.”

We could use a little more hope. I think that is why people buy lottery tickets.

One poor mother, who was raising her children by long hours of hard work, was asked,“Why do you waste your money on a lottery ticket when you can hardly make ends meet? ”“Yeah, I buy a ticket every day,”the woman admitted. “But a dollar is not too much to pay for 24 hours of hope.” There are probably better uses for her money than to buying lottery tickets, but she would rather hang onto a little hope than onto her dollar.

We need hope in life. Without it, far too many people come to the conclusion that they are powerless in the face of difficulties. Without hope, they won’t make needed changes. They feel powerless. They can feel sorry for themselves and helpless to do anything about their problems, or they can believe there is a chance for something better.

Norman Cousins, in his book Head First, the Biology of hope, explains the power of hope. He tells of two doctors who were to give a speech at a national meeting of cancer specialists(专家). One was truly puzzled. “I don’t understand it, Bob,”

he said. “We use the same drugs, the same dosage(量),and the same schedule of treatment. Yet I get a 22% recovery rate and you get a 74% recovery rate. How do you

explain that?”

The other answered, “We both use etoposide, plati onal, oncovin, and hydroxyurea. You put those letters together and tell people that you are giving them E-P-O-H. I put them together and explain to people that they are receiving H-O-P-E.”

28. Why did the poor mother buy lottery tickets?

A. She did it just for fun.

B. She put her hope on them.

C. She wanted to help others.

D. She won much money through them.

29. The underlined phrase “make ends meet”in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to ““.

A. earn enough money to buy necessities

B. take part in activities

C. buy lottery tickets

D. make yourself happy

30. How did Bob raise his recovery rate?

A. He used different medicines.

B. He made the patients hopeful.

C. He gave the patients a higher dosage.

D. He used the medicine in a different order.

31. How does the author mainly make his view accepted?

A. By giving examples.

B. By making comparisons.

C. By giving cause and effect.

D. By sharing his own experiences

D

My first child was born in 1986 and two and a half years later, I had my daughter. All I ever did from then on was taking care of kids and our home. Throughout those early years, whenever I went somewhere and was around other adults, I would be asked what I did. Far too many people had the same reaction when I told them I was a stay-at-home mom. It made me very angry at such type of response as “Oh, you really don't do anything”. I worked hard as a mom and I took my “job” very seriously!

Raising children is doing something and is extremely important.

So that's when I decided to find a way to deal with these ignorant people and to boost my self-esteem(自尊) at the same time. On many of the social occasions, some of the “professional” women would give me their business card as if to show me that they actually did something and had some important title. I decided to give myself a very impressive, important-sounding title and then make up a business card to hand out.

I thought about what I actually did as a mom over the next few days. I took special care to make sure I was giving my children the best care, instruction and information I possibly could. It was my job to teach my kids: how to speak, how to eat, how to dress, how to get along with others, and so on. I specialized in the academic(学业的), social and emotional development of human beings — my kids! After reading my brief overview of my own job, I came up with my new, impressive title: Human Development Specialist.

At every opportunity, I handed out my card. 99.99% of the time, people were obviously impressed! It really made me feel better. Most people made a guess at what a “Human Development Specialist” is or does, and I just let them think whatever they wanted to.

32.We can learn from the first paragraph that the writer ________.

A.had a good job before she had children

B.in her opinion , looking after children at home is of great importance.

C.couldn't find a satisfying job

D.didn't know how to get on with other women

33.What did the writer do to improve her self-esteem?

A.She made herself a business card.

B.She pretended to have a good job.

C.She started a business at home.

D.She told others how she was ignored.

34.What was other people's reaction to the writer's title?

A.Most of them felt proud.

B.Most of them were excited.

C.Most of them were disappointed.

D.Most of them were impressed and puzzled.

35.What would be the best title for the passage?

A.Family Is More Important Than Work

B.Being a Mom Means Giving up Many Things

C.Being a Full-time Mom Is Important

D.People Have Equal Rights

Success in high school is often a stepping stone to a bigger success in life.

36 However,

in addition to hard work, there are a number of time-tested ways you can employ to do better in high school.

Find successful friends. Students who make friends with those who do well in school will improve their grades too. 37 In addition, such students can also cooperate by sharing notes and helping each other understand study material.

Reduce stress. Stress causes you to become tired. Furthermore, stress can also affect your overall health. By learning to deal with stress in high school you will acquire a life-long habit of keeping your stress level low. Stress reduction activities may include dances, walking and relaxation. 39

Manage your time. 40 Make sure you use it well. Focus on what’s really important—your study and some exercise for your body.
