The findings, the first in a series of reports from NatWest that has started 32 five-year research project into teenagers and money, are particularly worrying as this generation of young people is likely 33 (burden) with greater debts than any before.

In the research, the teenagers predicted that they would be earning 34 average £ 31.000 by the age of 25, although the average salary for those 35 (age) 22 to 29 is just £ 17,815. The teenagers expected to be in debt when they finished university 36 training, although half said that they assumed the debts would be less than £10.000. Average debts for graduates are £ 12,363.

Stephen Moir, head of community investment at the Royal Bank of Scotland Group which owns NatWest, said, ―The more exposed young people are 37 financial issues, and the younger they become aware of them, the more likely they are to become 38 (responsibility), forward-planning adults who can manage 39 finances confidently and effectively.‖ Ministers are deeply concerned about the financial pressures on teenagers and young people because of student loans and rising housing costs. They have just introduced new lessons in 40 to manage debts. It was not yet eleven o’clock when a boat crossed the river with a single passenger who had obtained his transportation at that unusual hour by promising an extra fare. While the youth stood on the landing-place searching in his pockets for money, the ferryman lifted a lantern, by the aid of which, together with the newly risen moon, he took a very accurate survey of the stranger’s figure. He was a young man of barely eighteen years, evidently country bred, and now, as it seemed, on his first visit to town. He was wearing a rough gray coat, which was in good shape, but which had seen many winters before this one. The garments under his coat were well constructed of leather, and fitted tightly to a pair of muscular legs; his stockings of blue yarn must have been the work of a mother or sister, and on his head was a three-cornered hat, which in its better days had sheltered the grayer head of the young man’s parent. In his left hand was a walking stick, and his equipment was completed by a leather bag not so abundantly stocked as to inconvenience the strong shoulders on which it hung. Brown, curly hair, well-shaped features, bright, cheerful eyes were nature’s gifts, and worth all that art could have done for his adornment(装饰). The youth, whose name was Robin, paid the boatman, and then walked forward into the town with a light step, as if he had not already traveled more than thirty miles that day. As he walked, he surveyed his surroundings as eagerly as if he were entering London or Madrid, instead of the little metropolis (都市)of a New England colony.

C. It might have been left by his father.

D. It is gray and in good shape.

45. The passage might be a part of ______.

A. an essay

B. a novel

C. a journal

D. a biography

B

The Teens & Self-image survey organized by USA WEEKEND attracted an unprecedented 272,400. Many teens say they feel good about themselves, but many express misgivings about who they are, especially about their appearance.

The results show that looks are key. Only 4 in 10 respondents consider themselves attractive. Half of the girls want to lose weight. It is found that problems typically associated with girls are now becoming more visible in boys. Teenage respondents believe good looks matter when it comes to personal achievements, making friends, winning the respect of others and succeeding in life, in particular.

Teens find lots of imperfections. Almost 85 percent cite ways they’d like to improve. After losing weight and toning up (健美), the top three are their grades, doing better in sports, and having a better relationship with the parents. Only 15 percent like themselves ―the way I am‖.

Faith is central in many students’everyday lives. When asked about the most important influence in their lives, survey respondents picked religion second only to their parents.

Depression is common. More than half say they occasionally are ―really depressed‖; 1 in 5 often feel despondent. And 1 in 3 have friends who have talked about suicide—the third leading cause of death among 15 to 24 years old. Last year, about 2,000 teens committed suicide, and the rate of adolescent suicide has greatly increased in the past decade.

Teens show a healthy self-respect. Asked to choose from a list of qualities, 8 in 10 say they are kind, 3 in 4 say they are honest, and 7 in 10 say they have a good sense of humor. Slightly more than 6 in 10 say they are smart, self-confident or creative. Least admired of a dozen qualities they were asked to rank: being popular, rich or tough.

46. Which of the following is the best title of the passage?

A. Teens in USA need to improve their images

B. Self-images of American teenagers

C. A survey made among teenagers in USA

D. Teenagers’ negative comments on their own images

47. What has influenced American teenagers’ daily lives most?

A. Religion

B. Their parents

C. Depression

D. Looks

48. Which of the following is TRUE according to the survey?

A. American teenagers consider being popular as a life goal.

B. Only 15% of the respondents are really satisfied with themselves.

C. Boys are becoming less concerned about their looks.

D. Some teenagers end up committing suicide because they lack faith.

49. The underlined word ―despondent‖ most probably means ―_____‖.

C. lacking support

D. discouraged

50. Teenagers believe that _____ plays an important role in making friends, winning the respect of

others and succeeding in life.

A. a good appearance

C

The gift of being able to describe a face accurately is a rare one, as every experienced police officer knows to his cost. As the Lancet put it recently, ―When we try to describe faces precisely words fail us, and we resort to identikit (拼脸型图) procedures.‖

Y et, according to one authority on the subject, we can each probably recognize more than 1,000 faces, the majority of which differ in fine details. This, when one comes to think of it, is a tremendous feat (了不起的事), though, curiously enough, relatively little attention has been devoted to the fundamental problems of how and why we acquire this gift for recognizing and remembering faces. Is it an inborn property of our brains, or an acquired one? As so often happens, the experts tend to differ.

Thus, some argue that it is inborn, and that there are ―special characteristics about the brain’s ability to distinguish faces‖. In support of t his these they note how much better we are at recognizing a face after a single encounter than we are, for example, in recognizing an individual horse. On the other hand, there are those, and they are probably in the majority, who claim that the gift is an acquired one.

The arguments in favor of this latter view, it must be admitted, are impressive. It is a habit that is acquired soon after birth. Watch, for instance, how a quite young baby recognizes his member by sight. Granted that his other senses help – the sound of her voice, his sense of smell, the distinctive way she handles him.

But of all these, sight is important. Formed at the very beginning of life, the ability to recognize faces quickly becomes an established habit, and one that is, essential for daily living, if not necessarily for survival. How essential and valuable it is we probably do not appreciate until we meet people who have been deprived of the ability.

This unfortunate inability to recognize familiar faces is known to all, but such people can often recognize individuals by their voices, their walking manners or their glasses. With typical human cleverness many of these unfortunate people overcome their handicap by recognizing other characteristic features.

51. It is stated in the passage that ______.

A. it is unusual for a person to be able to identify a face satisfactorily

B. the ability to recognize faces unhesitatingly is an unusual gift

C. quite a few people can be impressed by the faces they have seen

D. few people can give exact details of the appearance of a face

52. What the author feels strange about is that______.

A. people have the tremendous ability to recognize more than 1,000 faces

B. people don’t think much about how and why we can recognize and rem ember faces

C. people don’t realize how essential and valuable it is to be able to recognize faces

D. people have been arguing much over the way people recognize and remember faces

53. What is the first suggested explanation of the origin of the ability of recognizing faces?

A. It is one of the characteristics belonging only to babies.

B. It is acquired soon after birth.

C. It is something we can do from the very moment we are born.

D. It is learned from our environment and experiences.

54. This passage seems to emphasize that ______.

A. the ability to recognize individuals depends on sight and other senses

B. sight is indispensable to recognizing individuals

C. the ability to recognize faces is a special inborn ability of the brain

D. the importance of the ability of recognizing faces is fully appreciated by every person

55. It can be inferred from the passage that ______.

A. handicapped ones can recognize people by their voice

B. handicapped ones can recognize people better than normal ones

C. the blind may recognize people by their voices

D. all unfortunate people can overcome their handicap

阅读下面的短文,然后按要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文.

Growing up to Be Independent

Growing up is not always easy. When facing difficulties, courage and a spirit of independence can be more useful than crying for help. That’s what Hong Zhanhui’s story of growing from boy to man with family hardships tells us.

Hong who was born in 1982 in a poor family in Xihua County, Hunan Province is now a hero in people’s mind. When he was only 11, his father became mentally ill and one day came back with an abandoned baby gi rl. A year later, Hong’s mother and younger brother both left home because of poverty and pressure from his ill father. Their burdens fell onto the 12-year-old’s shoulders: to treat his father’s illness, bring up the adopted sister Chenchen, and to go on t o study. Hong didn’t give up. Since a young age, he has worked in part-time jobs to feed his family. At the same time, he has studied at college. To take care of Chenchen, he worked hard to rent a room near his campus for her, and send her to school. After Hong’s story went public, people were moved to tears by his unselfishness. Hard as his life was, Hong didn’t abandon his father and the adopted sister, because they needed his help. With his hard-won money, he even aided other students struggling against misfortunes.

Hong’s story shows that with love and willpower, no hardship can defeat a person but himself. So when facing difficulties, don’t complain about bad luck. Consider what more you could do for your family and society and you’ll find the world s miling back.

第二节读写任务

Independence Is Important

Recently Hong Zhanhui’s story has captured public concern. Hong who was a poor student grows up to be independent by bringing up his adopted sister.

There is no doubt that a spirit of independence plays an important role among teenagers. But in fact, many parents just indulge their children so they don’t realize its importance. A spirit of independence can make teenagers grow up maturely. On one hand, it has a great effect on their life. Once they possess such spirit they won’t give way to difficulties so easily. It will let them keep on fighting until the final victory belongs to them. On the other hand, with such spirit, they will adjust to the society easily. What Hong did make me realize what we should do when facing difficulties.

I do hope everyone can learn from him.

高三英语周测试题

虎门中学高三周测英语试题1 第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) A The small coastal town of Broome, in northwest Australia, is a remote village in the vast countryside. There are no traffic jams and hardly any roads. There is only the massive Australian wild land, where some houses are 500 miles apart and some driveways are 50 miles long. There seem to be only two main sources of entertainment out here: the sunset at the beach and Sun Pictures. Sun Pictures is a very different movie theater:The seats are park benches and deck chairs, but you’re also welcome to sit on the grass. It is the world’s oldest outdoor movie garden. Sun Pictures was built in 1916 on the other side of the globe from Hollywood. All the big films were shipped here and the lonely country was amazed. Broome resident Pearl Hamaguchi has never traveled far from home. But in the Sun Pictures chairs, under the deep blue night sky, she has been almost everywhere. “And we came back excited about Gregory Peck,” she recalled. This is one of the few places left in the world where you can see two sets of stars at the same time-----one set in the sky, the other in the film. Each night, dozens of people from around the world line up at the old wooden stand, with no computer in sight, and buy their tickets to the latest films. Sun Pictures is also a museum, exhibiting projectors(放映机) that date back to the silent films, a portrait gallery of the famous people who never knew about this place---- even though they came here all the time. Every once in a while, I’m told, you might find a non-ticket holder in your seat. That’s why it’s always a good idea to shake out your chair to make sure there are no spiders or scorpions. “We’ve only had a couple of scorpion incidents but no one’s been stung yet,” said Aaron Mestemaker, a tourist visiting from Michigan. Sun Pictures is a holy hall of movie history and a reminder that air conditioning and carpet are no match for grass and fresh air---even when the lizards steal the scene. 21. The first two paragraphs want to show that__________. A. living in Broome is inconvenient B. the life in Broome is boring C. few people like to live in Broome D. Broome is simple but vast 22. Sun Pictures is different from other theaters because _________. A. it is the most historical outdoor theater in the world B. the audience can either sit on chairs or on the grass C. it was built by some constructor from Hollywood D. all the films were imported here from Hollywood 23. 石家庄二中实验学校2018级英语周考试卷 命题人张建伟做题人殷晓优考试时间8 月23 日 I 阅读理解(共4 小题;每小题2 分,满分8分) Recently, researchers at the University of Toronto figured out a way with a quick video selfie to accurately measure blood pressure with your smartphone’s camera by developing a technology known as transdermal optical imaging (TOI)(透皮光学成像). Cameras on smartphones can catch red light reflected from hemoglobin (血红素)under our skin, which permits TOI to visualize and measure blood flow changes. Researchers measured the blood pressure of 1,328 Canadian and Chinese adults by getting two-minute vide os of their faces on an iPhone. “From the video got by the technology, you can see how the blood flows in different parts of the face and through this flow, you can get a lot of information,” said Kang Lee, lead author of the study. Lee also helped create an app called Anura, which allows people to try out the TOI software for themselves, giving them the ability to record a 30-second video of their face and receive measurements for stress levels and resting heart rate. Lee said more research was needed to make sure that the measurements were as accurate as possible, explaining that the study didn’t test people with very dark or very fair skin. “In order to improve our app to make it usable, particularly for people with hypertension (高血压),we need to collect a lot of data from them, which is very hard because a lot of them are already taking medicine,”Lee explained. “We cannot tell them not to take medicine, but from time to time, we get participants who don’t take medicine so we can get hypertensive people this way.” The scientists said there were many potential applications of the technology, including providing health services for those who lived in remote areas. 1. What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 2? A. Information offered by TOI. B. New findings on hypertension. C. How TOI is put into smart phones. D. How the TOI technology works. 2.
