第三部分阅读(共两节,满分50分)

第一节阅读理解阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

(A)

Decisions, decisions! Our lives are full of them, from the small ones to the life-changing. The right to choose is central to everyone. Yet sometimes we make bad decisions that leave us unhappy or full of regret. Can science help?

Most of us know little about the mental processes that lie behind our decisions. Luckily,

what psychologists are finding may help us all make better choices. Here are some of their amazing discoveries to help you make up your mind.

Consider your emotions. You might think that emotions are the enemy of decision-making, but in fact they are a part of it. Whenever you make up your mind, your brain’s emotional centre is active. University of Southern California scientist, Antonio Damasia, has studied people with damage to only the emotional parts of their brains, and found that they were unable to make basic choices about what to wear or eat. Damasia thinks this may be because our brains store emotional memories of past choice, which we use to help the present decision-making.

However, making choices under the influence of an emotion can greatly affect the result. Take anger for example. A study by Nitika Garg of the University of Mississippi and other scientists found the angry shoppers were more likely to choose the first thing they were offered rather than considering other choices. It seems that anger can lead us to make quick decisions without much thinking.

All emotions affect our thinking and motivation,so it may be best to avoid making important decisions under their influence. Yet strangely there is one emotion that seems to help us make good choices. The American researchers found that sad people took time to consider the various choices on offer, and ended up making the best choices. In fact many studies show that people who feel unhappy have the most reasonable view of the world.

I came to study in the United States a year ago. Yet, I did not know the real American society until I was injured in a car accident because after the car accident I had to see a doctor---- and go to court(法庭).

After the accident, my roommate called a doctor for me. I was very grateful and determined

to repay him one day. But the next day, he asked me to pay him $200 for what he had done. I was astonished. He had good reasons to charge me, he said. And if I wanted to collect money from the person who was responsible for my injury, I’d have to have a good lawyer. And only a good doctor can help me get a good lawyer. Now that he had helped me find a good doctor, it was only fair that I should pay him.

But every time I went to see the doctor, I had to wait about 50 minutes. He would see two or three patients at the same time, and often stopped treating one so as to see another. Yet he charged me $115 each time. The final examination report consisted of ten lines and it cost me $215.

My lawyer was all smiles the first time we met. But after that he avoided seeing me at all. He knew very well the other party was responsible for the accident, yet he hardly did anything. He simply waited to collect his money. He was so irresponsible that I decided to dismiss him. And he made me pay him $770.

Now I had to act as my own lawyer. Due to my inexperience, I told the insurance(保险) company the date I was leaving American. Knowing that, they played for time… and I left without getting a cent.

My experience taught me two things about America: firstly, in a country like America money is everything. It is more important than friendship, honor or professional morality(职业道德). Secondly foreigners are still being treated unfairly. So when we talk about America, we should see both its good and bad sides.

46. The author’s roommate offered to help him because ___________.

B. he thought it was a chance to make some money

C. he knew the doctor was a very good one

D. he wanted the author to have a good lawyer

47. A good doctor is essential for the author to____________.

A. to be properly treated

B. talk with the person responsible for the accident

C. recover before he leaves America

D. eventually get the responsible party to pay for his injury

48. The underlined word ―charge‖ in the second paragraph means ______________.

A. be responsible

B. accuse

C. ask for money as a price

D. claim

49. Both the doctor and the lawyer in the passage are very ____________.

A. friendly

B. greedy

C. professional

D. busy

50. What conclusion can you draw from the story?

A. Going to court is something very common in America.

B. One must be very careful while driving a car.

C. There are more bad sides in America than good sides.

D. Money is more important than other things in America.

(C)

Most people feel lonely sometimes, but it usually only lasts between a few minutes and a few hours. This kind of loneliness is not serious. In fact, it is quite normal. For some people,

though, loneliness can last for years. Now researchers say there are three different types of loneliness.

The first kind of loneliness is temporary(暂时的). This is the most common type. It usually disappears quickly and does not require any special attention. The second kind, situational loneliness, is a natural result of a particular situation---- for example, a family problem, the death of a loved one, or moving to a new place. Although this kind of loneliness can cause physical problems, such as headaches and sleeplessness, it usually does not last for more than a year.

The third kind of loneliness is the most severe. Unlike the second type, chronic(长期的) loneliness usually last more than two years and has no specific cause. People who experience habitual loneliness have problems socializing and becoming close to others. Unfortunately, many chronically lonely people think there is little or nothing they can do to improve their condition.

Psychologists agree that one important fact in loneliness is a person’s social contacts, e.g, friends, family members, co-workers, etc. We depend on various people for different reasons. For example, our families give us emotional support, our parents and teachers give us guidance, and our friends share similar interests and activities. However, psychologists have found that, though lonely people may have many social contacts, they sometimes feel they should have more. They question their own popularity.

Psychologists are trying to find ways to help habitually lonely people for two reasons: they are unhappy and unable to socialize and there is a connection between chronic loneliness and serious illness such as heart disease. While temporary and situational loneliness can be a normal, healthy part of life, chronic loneliness can be a very sad, and sometimes dangerous condition.

51. How would you treat temporary loneliness according to the passage?

A. Talk to friends

A. one problem of loneliness is a person’s social contacts

B. we depend on various people for different reasons

C. lonely people don’t have many social problems

D. lonely peop le don’t have many friends

54. Why do psychologists want to help chronically lonely people?

A. Chronic loneliness can cause family problems.

B. Chronic loneliness can cause serious illness.

C. Chronic loneliness cannot be overcome.

D. A, B, and C are all correct

55. What is the best title of the passage?

A. Three kinds of Loneliness

B. Loneliness and Diseases

C. Loneliness and Social Contacts

D. Chronic Loneliness

(D)

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is one of those classics that has so made its influence upon Science Fiction and popular culture that one needn't have read the book to know its features: the dark genius--Captain Nemo; the futuristic Nautilus with its thousands of strange inventions and capabilities; and giant octopi(章鱼)that can drag a ship down to the abyss(深渊). In fact, this book is so foreseeing into modern culture that, even more than 120 years after its first publication, it yet deserves examination.

This examination is guaranteed because Jules Verne was so greatly insightful(具有远见的) about future technology and human interaction with it. Although recognizable submarines(潜艇) had been kicking around since the 18th century, it was Verne who pictured this invention on a big scale(规模). He equipped his Nautilus with newborn technologies (like electricity), and carefully researched and described the possibilities (the Nautilus gets all of its electrical power from chemical reactions using seawater). In a word, the Nautilus was the first, detailed picture of a submarine.

However, reasonable science, excellent research and fantastic voyages don't always make great stories. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea deserves praise for its futuristic insight and its contributions to the establishment of Science Fiction, but it's not the most attractive. Basically plotless, the Nautilus' adventures, though interesting, are put together without any sense of overall architecture, making the story a very long travelogue. Its time has passed -- its examinations of biological wonders are from the eye of 19th-century Europe, which substituted overall killing for respect and tried to plant its flag on any new land mass, regardless of who might already live there. Fascinating at first, the book becomes tiresome, but is in the end saved, for it is a lesson on how to build solid facts into solid futurism.

56. From this passage, we know that Nautilus _____________________.

A. is the name of a person in the novel

B. is the Captain of a ship in the novel

C. is the name of a submarine in the novel

D. is a giant sea fish in the novel

57. Jules Verne might ________________.

A. be the man who constructed the first submarine.

B. be the writer of the novel

C. be able to produce electricity using seawater

D. be an inventor in the novel

58. According to this passage, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is great because __________.

A. it is a long travelogue.

B. it was written in the 19th century.

C. it described fantastic voyages.

D. it shows great insight into future technology.

59. Which of the following CANNOT be inferred from the passage?

A. The 19th-century Europe showed little respect for life in a new land.

B. Some technologies described in science fiction may eventually be realized.

C. Captain Nemo must be an European.

D. 18th–century people didn’t know what electricity was.

60. What is the attitude of the author of this passage towards 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea?

A. He is objective (客观的).

B. He thinks it doesn’t deserve its reputation of a classic.

C. He thinks highly of the whole novel.

D. He thinks it is not worth reading.

(Sunshine sports for millions of students nationwide)”。

【写作内容】

1.当今学生的身体状况及你对“全国亿万学生阳光体育运动”的评价;

2.你对学生们的一些建议。

【写作要求】

1.必须用5个句子介绍全部所给的内容;

2.将5个句子组织成连贯的短文。

第二节读写任务(共l小题,满分25分)

阅读下面短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。

In fact, happiness is always around you if you put your heart into it. When you are in trouble at school, your friends will help you; when you study hard at your lessons, your parents are always taking care of your life and your health; when you get success, your friends will say congratulations to you; when you do something wrong, people around you will help you to correct it. And when you do something good to others, you will feel happy, too. All these are your happiness. If you notice a bit of them, you can see that happiness is always around you.

Happiness is not the same as money. It’s a feeling of your heart. When you are poor, you can also say you are very happy, because you have something else that can’t be bought with money. When you meet with difficulties, you can say loudly you are very happy, because you have more chances to challenge yourself. So you cannot always say you are poor and you have bad luck. As the saying goes, ―Life is like a revolving(旋转的) door. When it closes, it also opens.‖ If you take every chance you get, you can be a happy and lucky person.

【写作内容】

1.以约30个词概括上文中第一段的内容;

2.以约120个词谈谈你对幸福的理解,并包括如下要点:

(1)反驳社会上有些人认为的幸福与金钱等同的观点;

(2)你认为学生怎样在学习中寻求快乐?

【写作要求】

Nowadays the students’ health is becoming worse. “Eating well, running slowly and jumping low” has been so common among teenagers and about two thirds of them are short-sighted. So I think “Sunshine sports for millions of students nationwide” is a very good activity that can help solve students’ health problems.

For all the students, taking part in the above activity is really a good chance for them to build up their bodies. Also, students should get rid of bad habits and exercise by doing all kinds of sports.

第二节:读写任务(共2小题,满分25分)

The passage mainly talks about that you can live happily with people around you, if you would like to help them and share your happiness as well as trouble with them. So happiness is always around you.

When talking about happiness, many people think that happiness is money. But I don’t think so because rich people are actually not so happy as those who don’t have much money. Happiness is just the feeling of your heart. When you feel happy, you are happy. Sometimes money may make you feel good for a short time, but what makes you always happy is that you must keep a happy mind.

Study in school needs hard work, but you can still find happiness: you can play with your classmates and friends, who can help you and share your trouble and pleasure; you can take part in the activities or you can simply study, enjoying the wonderful things in your reading.
