Soon thelocalpeople accepted him as one of their own.Word passes quickly in smallVermonttowns.They know good people when they meet them. Around town the neighbors greeted my father as "Doc Eppley." And I soon learned that as long as I lived in Enosburg I would always be known as "Doctor Eppley's son". (the neighbors greeted father and son.)N:”Dor Eppley,who's this?”

D:”This is my son.”

Scene 2 (When he was a teenage)

N:”Hello,Doctor Eppley’s son.you were growing up to be an honorable and industrious young man ,living an honest life just like your father.“

(S groaned whenever he heard their compliments.) Then,S (replied emphatically,)”My name is Harold.And I can manage quite well on my own.”

A:one day in the midst of an argument.

F:”Why are you acting so stubborn lately.”

S:”Well,Sam,”

S:”I suppose that bothers you.”

F:”You know it hurts me when you call me Sam “

S:”Well,it hurts me when everybody expects me to be just like you.I don’t want to be perfect.I want to be myself.”A:I chose to attend a school far from Enosburg,a place where nobody called me “Doctor Eppley’s son.”On night at college I sat with a group of students in the dormitory as we shared stories about our lives.We began to talk about the things we hated most about our childhoods. S:”That’s easy,””I couldn’t stand growing up in a town where everybody always compared me with my father.”

G(sitting next to me frowned):”I don’t understand,”

"I'd be proud to have a father who's so well respected."(Her eyes filled with tears as she continued),"I'd give anything tobe called my father's child.But I don't know where he is. He left my mother when I was only four."

S:(I wasn't ready to hear her words.)

Scene 3 (After the car accident)

A:For two weeks I enjoyed being back in Enosburg. The maintopicof interest at home was my father's new car. S:"Let me take it out for a drive,"

D:"Be careful."

S(glared at D):"Sam, I'm sick ofbeing treated like a child. I'm in college now. Don't you think I know how to drive?" D(the hurt in his face):"All right then,"

A:I hopped into the car and headed down the road,savoring the beauty of the Vermont countryside.My mind was wandering.At a busy intersection, I hit the car right in front of mine before I knew it.

W(in the car jumped out screaming): "Youidiot!Why didn't you look where you were going?"

S(sat there like a guilty child as the woman continued complaining.)

W(shouted):"It's your fault,"

S(I couldn't protest. My knees began to shake. I choked back my tears.)

W:"Do you have insurance? Can you pay for this? Who are you?"(aggressive look咄咄逼人的样子)"Who are you?"

S(panicked and, without thinking, shouted,) "I'm Doctor Eppley's son."

W(her frown became a smile of recognition.) "I'm sorry," "I didn't realize who you were."

A: An hour later, I drove my father's battered new car back home. With my head down and my knees still shaking, I trudged into the house. I explained what had happened. D(concerned and worried):"Are you hurt?"

Unit 1 A heated discussion about whether men are braver than women is settled in a rather unexpected way. The dinner party Mona Gardner I first heard this tale in India, where is told as if true -- though any naturalist would know it couldn't be. Later someone told me that the story appeared in a magazine shortly before the First World War. That magazine story, and the person who wrote it, I have never been able to track down. The country is India. A colonial official and his wife are giving a large dinner party. They are seated with their guests -- officers and their wives, and a visiting American naturalist -- in their spacious dining room, which has a bare marble floor, open rafters and wide glass doors opening onto a veranda. A spirited discussion springs up between a young girl who says that women have outgrown the jumping-on-a-chair-at-the-sight-of-a-mouse era and a major who says that they haven't. "A woman's reaction in any crisis," the major says, "is to scream. And while a man may feel like it, he has that ounce more of control than a woman has. And that last ounce is what really counts." The American does not join in the argument but watches the other guests. As he looks, he sees a strange expression come over the face of the hostess. She is staring straight ahead, her muscles contracting slightly. She motions to the native boy standing behind her chair and whispers something to him. The boy's eyes widen: he quickly leaves the room. Of the guests, none except the American notices this or sees the boy place a bowl of milk on the veranda just outside the open doors. The American comes to with a start. In India, milk in a bowl means only one thing -- bait for a snake. He realizes there must be a cobra in the room. He looks up at the rafters -- the likeliest place -- but they are bare. Three corners of the room are empty, and in the fourth the servants are waiting to serve the next course. There is only one place left -- under the table. His first impulse is to jump back and warn the others, but he knows the commotion would frighten the cobra into striking. He speaks quickly, the tone of his voice so commanding that it silences everyone. "I want to know just what control everyone at this table has. I will count three hundred -- that's five minutes -- and not one of you is to move a muscle. Those who move will forfeit 50 rupees. Ready?" The 20 people sit like stone images while he counts. He is saying "...two hundred and eighty..." when, out of the corner of his eye, he sees the cobra emerge and make for the bowl of milk. Screams ring out as he jumps to slam the veranda doors safely shut. "You were right, Major!" the host exclaims. "A man has just shown us an example of perfect self-control." "Just a minute," the American says, turning to his hostess. "Mrs. Wynnes, how did you know that cobra was in the room?" A faint smile lights up the woman's face as she replies: "Because it was crawling across my foot."

His brother had echoed, "And we can do the job in two hours!" "Both the Sears and Ward ads are four newspaper-size pages," my wife informed me. "There are thirty-two thousand pages of advertising on our porch. Even as we speak, two big guys are carrying armloads of paper up the walk. What do we do about all this?" "Just tell the boys to get busy," I instructed. "They're college men. They'll do what they have to do." At noon the following day I returned to the hotel and found an urgent message to telephone my wife. Her voice was unnaturally high and quavering. There had been several more truckloads of ad inserts. Unit 1 Time-Conscious Americans Americans believe no one stands still. If you are not moving ahead, you are falling behind. This attitude results in a nation of people committed to researching, experimenting and exploring. Time is one of the two elements that Americans save carefully, the other being labor. "We are slaves to nothing but the clock," it has been said. Time is treated as if it were something almost real. We budget it, save it, waste it, steal it, kill it, cut it, account for it; we also charge for it. It is a precious resource. Many people have a rather acute sense of the shortness of each lifetime. A foreigner's first impression of the US is likely to be that everyone is in a rush—often under pressure.
