Part IV Reading comprehension

Section A Passage Understanding (26 points, 2 points each )

Directions: This part is to test your reading ability. There are 3 passages in this section. Each passage is followed some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and write the corresponding letter on the Answer sheet.

Passage One

There was one thought that air pollution affected only the area immediately around large cities with factories and heavy automobile traffic. At present, we realize that although these are the areas with the worst air pollution, the problem is literally worldwide. On several occasions over the past decade, a heavy cloud of air pollution has covered the east of the United States and brought health warnings in rural areas away from any major concentration of manufacturing and automobile traffic. In fact, the very climate of the entire earth may be infected by air pollution. Some scientists consider that the increasing concentration of carbon dioxide in the air resulting from the burning of fossil fuels (coal and oil) is creating a “greenhouse effect”— conserving heat reflected from the earth and raising the world’s average temperature. If this view is correct and the world’s temperature is raised only a few degrees, much of the polar ice cap will melt and cities such as New York, Boston, Miami, and New Orleans will be in water.

Another view, less widely held, is that increasing particular matter in the atmosphere is blocking sunlight and lowering the earth’s temperature — a result that would be equally disastrous. A drop of just a few degrees could create something close to a new ice age, and would mane agriculture difficult or impossible in many of our top farming areas. Today we do not know for sure that either of these conditions will happen (though one recent government report drafted by experts in the field concluded that the greenhouse effect is very possible) Perhaps, if we are lucky enough, the two tendencies will offset each other and the world’s temperature will stay about the same as it is now. Driven by economic profits, people neglect the damage on our environment cau sed by the “advanced civilization”. Maybe the air pollution is the price the human beings have to pay for their development. But is it really worthwhile?

36. As to the greenhouse effect, the author __________.

A)share the same view with the scientist.

B) is uncertain of its occurrence

C) rejects it as being ungrounded

D) thinks that it will destroy the world soon

37. The word “offset” in the second paragraph could be replaced by _________.

A) slip into B)make up for

C) set up D)catch up with

38. It can be concluded that ____________.

A) raising the world’s temperature only a few degrees would not do much harm to life on earth.

B) lowering the world’s temperature merely a few degrees would lead major farming areas to disaster.

C) almost no temperature variations have occurred over the past decade.

D) the world’s temperature will remain constant in the years to come.

39. This passage is primarily about __________.

A) the greenhouse effect..

B) the burning of fossil fuels..

C) the potential effect of air pollution.

D) the likelihood of a new ice age.

He sometimes pays for songs about his product on radio programs. He employs attractive salesgirls to deliver samples (样品) of it. He organizes competitions, with prizes for the winners. He often advertises on the screens of local cinemas, and most important of all, in countries that have television he has advertisements put into programs. Man is a land animal, but he is also closely tied to the sea. Throughout history the sea has served the needs of man. The sea has provided man with food and a convenient way to travel to many parts of the world. Today, nearly two-thirds of the world's population live within 80 kilometers of the sea coast.

In the modern technological world, the sea offers many resources to help mankind survive. Resources on land are beginning to be used up. The sea, however, still can be hoped to supply many of man's needs.

The riches of the sea yet to be developed by man's technology is impressive. Oil and gas explorations have been carried out for nearly 30 years. Valuable amounts of minerals exist on the ocean floor ready to be mined.

Fish farming promises to be a good way to produce large quantities of food. The culture of fish and shellfish is an ancient skill practiced in the past mainly by Oriental people.

Besides oil and gas, the sea may offer new sources of energy. Experts believe that the warm temperature of the ocean can be used in a way similar to the steam in a steamship. Ocean currents and waves offer possible use as a source of energy.

Technology is enabling man to explore ever more deeply under the sea. The development of strong, new materials has made this possible.

The technology to harvest the sea continues to improve. Experts believe that by the year 2050 the problems that prevent us from exploiting fully the food, minerals, and energy sources of the sea will be largely solved.

44. What is the best title for the passage?

A) Needs of Man. B) Sea Harvest and Food

C) Sea and Sources of Energy D) Sea Exploring Technology. 45. It can be inferred from the passage that ______.

A) man hasn't completely made use of the riches of the sea B) technology for exploring the sea has been solved C) harvesting rice in the sea will be made possible D) in the near future man can live on the ocean floor

46. Why does the author mention a steamship in paragraph 5?

A) To illustrate that man can make use of sources of energy from the sea. B) To show that a steamship is better than other kinds of ships. C) To argue that man should use steamships.

D) To indicate that it is warmer in the ocean than on land.

47. According to the author, technology is important because ______. A) resources on land are running short in ten years B) man can use it to explore the deeper sea C )it is a lot of fun diving into the sea

D )ancient people used it to explore the sea

48. According to the author, technology for exploring the sea is important because _____ A )man cannot travel farther in space B )resources on land are running short C )it ’s a lot of fun diving into the sea D )ancient people used to explore the sea

Section B Short Answer Questions ( 4 points, 1 point each )

Directions: Read the following Recommendation Letter. After reading it, you are required to

complete the statements that follow the questions. You should write your answers in no more than 5 words on the Answer Sheet correspondingly.

Dear Manager,

After a serious consideration, I have made a definite decision to resign from the department, effective on December 31. I think you will readily understand my decision in view of my personal financial problems. I feel that greater opportunities would be available to me to cope with these problems in some other companies.

My three-year working with you and my colleagues has been very pleasant and has provided a great challenge. 1 enjoyed working with you, and I regret very much the necessity of leaving the department only because of my extreme economic pressures.

Before my leaving, I will certainly help you train the person you select to fill my position. If at any future time a problem should arise, I shall be happy to assist in any way I can.

Respectfully yours Stephen Li
