The Internet is a worldwide communication network that links computers at schools, colleges, businesses, and other sites. The Internet includes collections of information put together by faculty and students at different schools, by government officials, by social service agencies, and, increasingly, by specific businesses or industries. Other sources of information on the Internet are the many discussion groups, or news groups, where people from all over the world exchange ideas on an astounding range of topics. The groups themselves are organized under the name Usenet.

If your school is connected to the Internet, you can use the network to locate information such as government documents, discussion groups, electronic journals, library catalogs, as well as complete texts that are in the public domain (works without copyrights or with expired copyrights). Current works protected by copyright law including practically all books and journals published in the last seventy-five years are unlikely to be available free of charge.

C.Volcano explosions brought some diamonds up to the surface of the earth.

D.Explosions of the volcano can damage diamonds as well. √

The diamond is considered the most famous and valuable jewel in the world.

Diamonds were made as a result of great volcanic heat and pressure. A volcano is a mountain with a hole in the top. When a volcano is very active it sometimes explodes and causes great damage. Diamonds were pushed towards the surface of the earth millions of years ago by a number of great volcanic explosions. It is in the narrow volcanic pipes that diamonds are found. They are also found among the sand and stones of certain river beds, and in a few places on the floor of the sea. For they were washed down the mountain sides by the rain.

Diamonds are very rare. There are not many diamond pipes or diamond producing rivers in the world. During the last century adventurers from Europe went to Brazil, because they had heard that there were diamonds in the River Amazon. Many of these early diamond miners died of illness or were lost forever in the great forests. But some returned home rich.

The earliest known diamonds were found in India many centuries ago. The most recent and exciting discoveries have been made in eastern Russia. But most of the world’s diamonds now come from the Congo, from Tanzaniz, which has the largest diamond mine in the world and from south Africa.

A.the growth of the printing industry

B.the history of paper-making √

C.the use of paper in the 19th century

D.the composition of wood fiber

In the early 1800s, the paper industry was still using rags as its basic source of fiber as it had for many centuries. However, the rag supply couldn’t keep up with the growing demand for paper. The United States alone was using 250 thou sand tons of rags each year. And a quarter of that had to be imported. It was clear that a new source of fiber was needed to keep up with the demand for paper. The answer to this problem turned out to be paper made from wood pulp, something that was abundantly available in North America. In Canada, the first wood pulp mill was set up in 1866, and it was immediately successful. But while wood pulp solved the problem of quantity, it created a problem of quality. Wood contains a substance called lignin. The simplest way to make large quantities of cheap paper involves leaving the lignin in the wood pulp. But lignin is acidic and its presence in paper has shorted the life expectancy of paper from several centuries for rag paper to less than a century for paper made from wood pulp. This means that books printed less than a hundred years ago are already turning yellow and beginning to disintegrate, even though books printed much earlier may be in fine condition. This is bad enough for the older books on your bookshelf, and it poses a huge problem for libraries and the collections of government documents, too.
