The Essence of Patriotism

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, it’s my great honor to stand here to deliver this speech. Today, my topic is the essence of patriotism.

From the first leaf of history, it has been proved more than once that patriotism plays a magnificent role in any nation’s history. Of course, patriotism has manifested itself in different forms at different times. However, the future leaves of history can only be more glorious by thriving on the essence of patriotism. Thus, throwing our minds back to the whole history, we finally find that all the forms of patriotisms can boil down to the following factors:

The letter “p” in “patriotism” represents “Pacifism”. Pacifism means “there is no war or other hostile acts of violence.”In other words, maintaining peace is an eternal goal for every country. While facing conflicts, some countries decide to use violence and force which was determined to plunge their people into misery and suffering, make their countries in trouble. So, pacifism is essential and necessary for a country. Just like the principle of non violence non cooperation which was advocated by Gandhi who is the Father of India. On account of his persevere of pacifism; India finally became independent from British rule. Meanwhile, in Chinese ancient, Mozi, who is the representative personage of Mohist School, advocated the idea of non-offensive. Mozi

were eager to make use of his idea to prove that non offensive is ultimately good to our country.

As we know, to realize pacifism, we also need to use selfless love.

So, as far as I’m concerned, the letter “a” in “pacifism” represents “Altruism”. Altruism means “not only care for one’s own benefits.”I guess, when you see this word “Altruism”, many of you may think of some great anti-Japanese heroes immediately. Such as Lang Ya Shan Five Heroic Men, who died for our country showed no fear while facing the brutal enemies. Their great behavior had given full expression to selfless patriotism. Of course, I know it’s unrealistic to require or force everyone to be such great people to sacrifice their own lives for our country. However, as a common people, we should not possess narrow self-interest or just care about ourselves. To some degree, our country is a big family, a big home for all Chinese people. What we can do to our country is to try our best to make our country become more powerful.

To make our country become more powerful, teamwork is essential in any case, so “t” in the “patriotism” can be understood as “teamwork”. For example, we all know something about Kuomintang-communist cooperation. This kind of cooperation, especially the second one is a perfect reflect of patriotism. During the time of anti-Japanese War, it was just the establishment of united front that contributed to the final success against Japan.

Then, the “r” in “Patriotism”, in my opinion, it’s the meaning of “responsibility”. I want to talk about Qian Xuesen who was considered as “the father of Chinese missile”I believe that all of we must be fa miliar with him and have heard a lot of events about him. I think his life is the best example that he undertakes patriotism by taking responsibility. He took the responsibility as a Chinese. He could have been in the US for an enviable life. But the responsibility of being a Chinese was pressing him to come back and as the cost, he bearded so much inhuman treatment in the US. His most contribution is that he preferred being a Chinese success to an American success. Indeed, he is a world success.

“i”represents inflexibility. Patriotism is by no means a profit-oriented feeling. Doubtless to say, the prosperity of the nation is incentive to the chasing of any advantages. No matter your motherland is in good or bad, your love to the nation, to the whole people, is inflexible. Such as the great Hungarian poet, Peduofé, said in his poem which is named I am a Hungarian: Even if the world gives me treasure and honor, I won’t be willing to leave my motherland, because even if it is in disgrace I will still like, love and bless her.

Inflexibility doesn’t means loving whatever the country is. A true patriot must also be objective. So “O”represents “Objective”. For example, in the early 20th century of China, the feudalism which governs the whole society made the people lived in the hell. It seemed that there

was nothing but darkness, indifference and cruelty. Therefore, at this time, a true patriot must be objectively resentful and rebellious and Lu Xun is such a good example.

“t” represents “tenured”. Patriotism is a tenured obligation. From our childhood to our old age, we all should keep it in mind until the last day. as patriotism is life-long. However, many adults gradually lose patriotism. Due to this fact, it is important for our citizens to cultivate such sense in face of destroying of our nation’s fame when we are young.

Since patriotism is tenured, the identification must also be rooted. So “i” stands for “identification”. Everyone belongs to only one country. We should be proud of being one of members of our nation. How can we gain respect from people in other countries if our native people don’t pay attention to those offensive acts?

Furthermore, the profound identification is the basis of sacrifice. Once there is any scandal about one’s own nation, one will put his full effort on making for the loss of his nation. So “s” represents “sacrifice”. Patriotism is a kind of sacrifice to some extent. In other words, the nation’s interest is everything. If our interest is against our nation’s interest, we are bound to sacrifice our benefits for the sake of the nation.

What’s more, the target of sacrifice is our motherland. So “m” can stand for motherland which is a platform for us to make contributions. Patriotism is a love for motherland. We all have motherland which needs

affection from native people. To some people, motherland is just a place to live in. Maybe they will regard any shelter as their motherland. However, to some other people, motherland is one belonging of their spirit. They show love for their motherland in the way they treat their own families.

Patriotism, though subtle and intangible, it’s still of massive significance in modern world and the future as its essence is consistent and adaptive to all nations.

When we have time, we always practice it, in the class; we sing that song to all my classmates. One of my classmates who study English well tells me listen English song and watch English TV also can improve English skill. She let me sing the song which I interested in. finally I got A. I find some papers about English. It include four areas the foundation: Listening, speaking, reading and writing. But my big problems listening and speaking .I begin to listen the English tape once again until I know what the word means.
