Everybody knows Amadeus Mozart, the world's most famous child piano prodigy(天才). He was a composer, pianist, and performer—a total musician. He was born in Salzburg, Austria, but nobody really knows where he was buried. Even his real name is not popular. People know him as Amadeus but few know he was born as John Chrysostom Wolfgang Theophilus Mozart, and his father called him Woferl.

As a child, Mozart was very popular. That was because he was doing things unusual for little children. While everyone else was having fun playing, Mozart was already composing, performing and touring for concerts. His father was always behind him.

Some really amazing stories about Mozart include the one when he heard an “oink” of a pig and recognized it as a G-sharp. When somebody duplicated(复制)the tune on a piano, it was indeed G-sharp. And he was only two years old at the time!

He also kept interfering with his sister's piano lessons at the age of three and that was when his father knew he wanted lessons too. But it wasn't until he was four years old when he finally got formal lessons. But at that time, he could already learn a minuet(小步舞曲)within thirty minutes! Who wouldn't be amazed?

At the age of six, while performing, he must have found his audience getting bored that he thought of performing a trick. But nobody knew he had the entire keyboard covered with a cloth so he could not see the keys and still played the music perfectly. He was still a child having fun at that time.

It was told that he suffered many disappointments and hardships. He didn't even have a stable job when he got married and he died really poor. There is a widespread story that a friend visited him one winter day, and found Mozart and his wife waltzing round the room.“We were cold,” they explained, “and we have no wood to make a fire.” They were cold, but they still chose a romantic way to get rid of the cold. His music spoke of life, love and laughter.

All in all, Mozart didn't only leave great music but a great lesson too: that no matter how difficult life is, there is always room for smiles, laughter and fun.

4.His father called him ________.

A.Mozart B.Woferl C.Amadeus D.Austria

5.As a child, Mozart was so popular because ________.

B.he was interested in learning dancing

C.he often made jokes when having music lessons

6.What were Mozart and his wife doing to get rid of the cold?

A.Jumping.B.Walking.C.Singing.D.Dancing.

7.Which of the following is true according to the text.?

A.Mozart had a poor life when he was married.

C.Mozart got a good job when he grew up.

D.Mozart's real name is very popular

There was one shop in the town of Mufulira which was widely known for its racial discrimination(种族歧视). It was a drugstore. While Europeans were served at the counter, a long line of Africans queued at the window and often not only were kept waiting but were rudely treated by the shop assistants. One day I was determined to make a public protest(抗议)against this kind of thing, and many of the schoolboys in my class followed me to the store.

I simply went into the shop and asked the manager politely for some medicine. As soon as he saw me standing in the place where only European customers were allowed to stand, he shouted at me in a bastard language which is only used by a boss when speaking to his servants. I stood at the counter and politely requested in proper English that I should be served. The manager became angry and said, “Even if you stand there till Christmas, I will never serve you.”

I went to the District Commissioner's office. Luckily, he was out, for he was one of the old school; however, I saw a young District Officer who was a friend of mine. He was very concerned to hear my story and told me that all I had to do was to come to

him personally and he would buy my medicine for me. I protested that that was not good enough. I asked him to accompany me back to the store and to make a protest to the manager. This he did, and I well remember him saying to the manager, “Here is Mr. Kaunda who is a responsible member of the Urban Advisory Council, and you treat him like a common servant.” The manager of the drugstore apologized and said, “If only he had introduced himself and explained who he was, then, of course I should have given him proper service.”

I had explained once again that he had missed my point. Why should I have to introduce myself every time I went into a store...any more than I should have to buy my medicine by going to a European friend? I want to prove that any man of any color, whatever his position, should have the right to go into any shop and buy what he wants. After all, the money which I paid across the counter was exactly the same money as was paid by a European customer.

8.The writer was, at the time of the story, ________.

A.a European officer B.an African servant

C.a drugstore assistant D.a black school teacher

9.The manager of the drugstore shouted at the writer in dirty words because ________.

A.he could not speak English in a polite way

B.he thought the writer wouldn't understand English

C.that was the language he used when speaking to Africans

D.that was the only language he could speak when he was angry

10.The underlined sentence “he was one of the old school” means ________.

A.he didn't give up those racial ideas

B.he was an old official in the government

C.he didn't graduate from a new white school

D.he was one of the leaders in an old black school

11.Why didn't the writer wait at the window of the drugstore like other Africans?

A.He believed his friends would help him out.

B.He wanted to fight for equal rights of all people.

C.He thought he was well educated and should be treated differently.

D.He thought, being an important person, he shouldn't be kept waiting.

阅读短文,根据其内容回答问题。

You are sitting at home doing your homework when your mom comes home early from her job at the factory.“Is anything wrong?” you ask her.“I just lost my job to a robot,” she says sadly.

Does this sound impossible?Already many thousands of robots are being used in factories all across the country. More are being put in every day. Some new factories are completely run by machines.

One result of increasing robots in many factories is that more people lose their jobs in industrial areas. Factory workers in these areas are worried. Even when jobs are kept, workers say that robots change the nature of the work. They say their jobs become much less interesting. Some people are not satisfied that now they only “baby-sit” for the new machines.

Other people think that robots will help both factory owners and the work force. Company spokespersons are quick to point out that robots often perform jobs that people would rather not do, for example, jobs that can be uninteresting or dangerous. The use of robots for dirty work can improve the working conditions for humans.

For factory work, robots are simply cheaper to operate and can do better jobs than humans. Many factory owners think that they must either use robots or lose business to companies that do. Some industry experts feel that robots will offer many new jobs. After all, people will have to build and fix the machines. But other experts point out that although using robots may bring about more jobs in the long run, they certainly cause job losses in the short run.

七、书面表达

Last year I had a wonderful winter vacation. I traveled with my parents to visit my grandparents. We played games together and spent a lot of time talking about my schoolwork. They were proud of me and our time together was very special.

However, I'm going to do something different this winter vacation. First of all, I will study harder than before because I want to make great progress in all subjects next term, especially in English. I am weak in English listening. I'll listen to the English radio program every day to improve my listening skills. Besides, I'd like to volunteer some time to visit the sick kids in the local hospital to cheer them up. I'm good at singing and dancing so I'll spend more time on them.

I'm sure I'll have a busy but colorful winter vacation.
