Have you ever dreamed of having a fashionable watch of great value? A small watchmaker in Switzerland in 1922 designed the first automatic watch to show the day, month, and date. Only seven of these splendid watches were ever made and these watches were almost lost to history. Today, it is so hard to get an original watch that some watch historians are even willing to offer $200,000 for one. These watches attracted a lot of people for their splendid colour, fashionable style, and new uses in the 1920s. The owners of the watches were admired and set apart from the crowd. Because the number of the original watches is very limited, owning such a watch will make you feel very special.

Today, you are offered the same kind of watch with improvement. It has a 24-jewel mechanical movement, the kind desired by watch collectors. The watchmaker has made the movement of the watch much more modern with an automatic rotor so that the watch never needs to be wound by hand. To get a watch in such a perfect design means to get a chance to know a piece of watch-making history and to wear such a watch will show your personal taste and social position.

You can get the watch either in person or by mail all at an affordable price. You will also receive good service from the watch seller. If you are not satisfied with the watch after you get it, you may simply return it within 30 days.

Results of a recent. Harris poll on free time shows that the average work week for many Americans is 50 hours. With the time spent eating, sleeping and taking care of household duties, there's little time left for leisure activities for many Americans.

However, having free time to relax and pursue hobbies is important. People need time away from the pressures of study or work to relax and enjoy time with friends and family. In different countries, free time is spent in different ways. The results of a Harris poll showed that reading was the most popular spare time activity in the US. This was followed by watching TV. In Japan, going to bars ranked eighth in popularity and gardening ranked ninth. Sports can help you keep fit and get in touch with nature. However, whether you are on the mountains, in the waves, or on the grassland, you should be aware that your sport of choice might have great influence on the environment.

Some sports are resource-hungry. Golf, as you may know, eats up not only large areas of countryside, but also tons of water. Besides, all sorts of chemicals and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its courses in good condition. This causes major environmental effects. For example, in the dry regions of Portugal and Spain, golf is often held responsible for serious water shortage in some local areas.

There are many environment-friendly sports. Power walking is one of them that you could take up today. You don't need any special equipment except a good pair of shoes; and you don't have to worry about resources and your purse. Simple and free, power walking can also keep you fit. If you walk regularly, it will be good for your heart and bones. Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep well and have better weight control.

Whatever sport you take up, you can make it greener by using environment-friendly equipment and buying products made from recycled materials. But the final goal should be "green gyms". They are better replacements

for traditional health clubs and modern sports centres. Members of green gyms play sports outdoors, in the countryside or other open spaces. There is no special requirement for you to start your membership. And best of all, it's free.

Being fat is bad for you. On that, almost everyone agrees. It is just possible, though, that almost everyone is wrong. In fact, getting fat may be a mechanism that protects the body. The health problems (26)associated with fatness may

not be caused by it but be another consequence, another symptom, of overeating.

That is the heretical (异端邪说的) (27)proposal of Roger Unger and Philipp Scherer. They have been (28)reviewing the science of what has come to be known as metabolic syndrome This is a host of symptoms such as high blood pressure, insulin (胰岛素) resistance and fatness that seem to increase the (29)risk of heart disease and strokes and liver disease. Metabolic syndrome is (30)found in one-sixth of the American population.

"Syndrome" is the medical term for a (31)collection of symptoms whose common cause is not properly understood. The symptom of metabolic syndrome that appears first is usually fatness, so this is generally regarded as the (32)potential cause.

Dr. Unger and Dr. Scherer, however, turn this logic on its head. They point out that there is usually a period of many years between a person becoming overweight and his (33)developing other symptoms. If the growth of the body cells was directly harmful, that would not be the case. This is one of the lines of evidence that has led them to the conclusion that, in addition to its role in storing energy as a way to (34)fight against future famine, getting fat is a (35)protective mechanism against metabolic syndrome.

A) proposal

B) issue

C) developing

D) stored

E) protective

F) negative

G) fight

H) collection

I) reviewing

J) assigned

K) risk

L) found

M) discovered

上文提到syndrome时说这是指a host of symptoms(许多症状)。
