Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.

Unemployment may be one of the biggest problems our people as well as our government are faced with today. According to an official report, in one big city alone, since 1986, nearly 1,000,000 adult workers have lost their jobs because of factory closings and cutbacks---either temporarily(暂时) laid off or permanently forced to retire.

Many people, especially the policy makers, believe that forcing adult workers, those who are over 45, to retire is an effective means to relieve the tension of unemployment, for it can provide more job opportunities for the jobless young. But they fail to notice that forcing a person who is still able to work and has a family to support to retire brings serious financial problems as well as emotional and physical ones. They also fail to realize that actually, workers aged 45-60 tend to be more stable, more skillful and more experienced than workers of any other ages, that to some extent this age is the prime time for one’s productivity and creativity. To force them to retire is a huge waste of the nation’s best r esources. On the contrary, if we turn our attention to the other end of the age line, a more effective way might emerge. Today, only 3% of school-leavers are allowed to go to college, leaving the majority of the young people under 18 without adequate preparation to join the labor force. If, however, more of them are able to attend college and begin full-time employment at a later age, more job opportunities will be created.

Most importantly, we should not be satisfied merely to solve the problem of unemployment, but rather, we should improve the quality of the work force at the same time-by keeping the skilled adults and accepting the well-educated young.

31. Forcing middle-aged persons to retire might cause______.

A) the loss of valuable resources C) elderly people to feel upset

B) shortage of the work force D) families to be unstable

32. The word “prime” in Line 8 Para 2 may be replaced by “______”.

A) first B) early C) major D)spring

33. Which of the following suggestions did the writer make? _______.

A) Young people should work harder in order to go to college.

B) Colleges should be open to more high school-leavers.

C) The old should be allowed to work as long as they want to.

D) Policy makers should create more job opportunities.

34. What is the writer’s attitude towards the described employment situation? _____.

A) Concerned B) Hopeless C) Doubted D) Satisfied

35. The best title for this passage might be “_______”.

A) Are the Policy Makers Wise?

B) Should People Be Forced to Retire?

C) Why Don’t We Educate the Young?

D) How to Solve Unemployment Problem?

Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.

What is exactly a lie? Is it anything we say which we know is untrue? Or is it something more than that? For example, suppose a friend wants to borrow some money from you, you say: “I wish I could help you but I’m short of money myself.” In fact, you are not short of money but your friend is in the habit of not pay ing his debts and you don’t want to hurt his feelings by reminding him of this. Is this really a lie? A scientific study of lying shows women are better liars (说谎者) than men, particularly when telling a “white lie”, such as when a woman at a party tells an other woman that she likes her dress when she really thinks it looks terrible. However, this is only one side of the story. Other researches show that men are more likely to tell more serious lies, such as making a promise which they have no intention of fulfilling. This is the kind of lie politicians and businessmen are supposed to be particularly skilled at: the lie from which the man hopes to profit or gain in some way.

Research has also been done into the way people’s behavior changes in a number of sma ll, unimportant ways when they lie. It has been found that if they are sitting down at the same time, they tend to move about in their chairs more than usual. To the trained observer they are saying “I wish I were somewhere else now.”

36. This passage tells us that telling lies is ___________.

A) often necessary in order to avoid defeated in an argument

B) sometimes necessary if you don’t want to hurt someone else

C) quite bad because people ought to be honest

D) usually bad if you are talking with a good friend

37. The writer says that women are better liars than men because __________.

A) their lies are easier to be accepted by men

B) men are not as skillful as women in telling lies

C) they often have a good intention in telling lies

D) women tell fewer lies than men do

38. A “white lie” means a lie that ___________.

A) is told with a good intention

B) is quite unbelievable

C) is almost true to the fact

D) often has a bad purpose

39. Politicians and businessmen are supposed to be skilled at telling such lies as____.

A) may keep better relations with others

B) seem to be strange but interesting

C) can make others believe it to be true

D) will allow them to gain some benefits

40. It can be concluded from the passage that _________.

A) there is a simple way of finding out if someone is lying

B) people’s behaviors sometimes can tell us they are lying

C) people often repeat what they are saying when telling a lie

D) in some situations women are most likely to tell a lie

Education is all enormous and expensive part of American life. Its size is matched by its variety. Differences in American schools compared with those found in the majority of other countries lie in the fact that education here has long been intended for everyone—not just for a privileged elite(精英,精华 . Schools ale expected to meet the needs of every child, regardless of ability, and also the needs of society itself. This means that public schools offer more than academic subjects. It surprises many people when they come here to find high schools offering such courses as typing, sewing , radio repair, computer programming or driver training , along with traditional academic subjects such as mathematics , history, and languages. Students choose their curricula(课程 depending on their interests, future goals, and level of ability. The underlying(潜在的 goal of American education is to develop every child to the utmost of his or her own possibilities, and to give each one a sense of civic and community consciousness. Schools have traditionally played an important role in creating national unity and “Americanizing” the millions of immigrants who have poured into this country from many different backgrounds and origins. Schools still play a large role in the community, especially in the small towns . The approach to teaching may seem unfamiliar to many, not only because it is informal, but also because there is not much emphasis on learning facts. Instead , Americans try to teach their children to think for themselves and to develop their own intellectual and creative abilities. Students spend much time, learning how to use resource materials libraries, statistics and computers. Americans believe that if children are taught to reason well and to research well, they will be able to find whatever facts they need throughout the rest of their lives . Knowing how to solve problems is considered more important than the accumulation of facts . This is America’s answer to the searching question that thoughtful parents all over the world are asking themselves in the fast-moving time:“How Can one prepare today’s child for a tomorrow that one can neither predict nor understand?”

[专升本类试卷]河北专接本英语(阅读理解)模拟试卷7 0 Long before recorded history, our ancestors were bathing for pleasure and health. The earliest records often mention the use of rivers for bathing. And the Hindus have believed for centuries that the Ganges River has the power to clean the soul, as well as the body. Several thousand years ago, the inhabitants of the island of Crete built baths with running water. The early Jews took ceremonial baths on certain occasions, making use of oils and ointments(油膏). The Jews also had a custom of bathing the feet of all strangers that came within their gates. This friendly custom is still practised in parts of Palestine. Swimming was popular among the Greeks of ancient time. By the third century before Christ, almost every Greek city of a certain size had at least one public bath. The wealthy classes had private baths and pools, some of which were beautifully decorated. Many of the public baths that the Romans built utilized natural mineral springs. Since most of these springs were naturally warm the Romans took advantage of this free hot water. By the time of the Roman Emperors, these baths were often housed in large, marble(大理石) buildings. The baths built by the Emperor Caracalla, in the center of Rome, covered about one square mile and could hold sixteen thousand people. 1 The earliest bathing place was probably_____. (A)the river (B)the Nile (C)the Ganges (D)the River Jordan 2 According to the passage, today, some parts of Palestine also have the custom of_____. (A)bathing in public baths (B)bathing for pleasure

The warmest temperature ever recorded there is zero, at the South Pole. Explorers used to think that a place so cold would have a heavy snowfall. But less than ten inches of snow falls each year. That is less than half an inch of water. Ten times that much moisture falls in parts of the Sahara. The little snow that falls in Antarctica never melts. It continues to pile up deeper and deeper year after year. When the snow gets to be about eighty feet deep it is turned to ice by the weight of the snow above it. 1. A. it gets wet B. the temperature gets colder C. the next snowfall comes D. the snow above it is heavy enough 答案:CDBDD Passage 2 Astronomers ( 宇航员) can tell just how hot the surface of the moon gets. The side of the moon toward the sun gets two degrees hotter than boiling water. The night side reaches 243 degrees below zero. In a lunar eclipse (月食) the earth's shadow falls on the moon. Then the moon's temperature may drop 300 degrees in a very short time. A temperature change like this cannot happen on the earth. Why does it happen on the moon? Astronomers know that the surface of the moon is dust. On the earth, rocks store heat from the sun. When the sun goes down, the rocks stay warm. But the dust of the moon cannot store heat. So when the moon gets dark, the heat escapes quickly. The moon gets very cold.
