Plot Summary for The Pursuit of Happiness

The Pursuit of Happiness is a 2006 American biographical drama film, directed by Gabriele Muccino and based on the true story of Chris Gardner. The film stars Will Smith as Gardner, an on-and-off-homeless salesman-turned stockbroker.

The screenplay by Steven Conrad is based on the eponymous best-selling memoir written by Gardner with Quincy Troupe. The film was released on December 15, 2006, by Columbia Pictures. For performance Smith received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor and a Golden Globe nomination.

In 1981, in San Francisco, the smart salesman and family man Chris Gardner invests the family savings in Osteo National bone-density scanners, an apparatus twice as expensive as an x-ray machine but with a slightly clearer image. This white elephant financially breaks the family, bringing troubles to his relationship with his wife Linda, who leaves him and moves to New York where she has received a job in a pizza parlor. She wishes to take their son Christopher with her, but Chris refuses because they both know that Linda will be unable to take care of him. Without money or a wife, but totally committed to his son Christopher, Chris sees the chance to fight for a stockbroker internship position at Dean Witter, offering a more promising career at the end of a six month unpaid training period. There are nineteen other candidates for the one position. Meanwhile, he encounters many challenges and difficulties, including a period of homelessness and troubles with the IRS.

At the Macy‘s De partment Store Thanksgiving Day parade, the actor playing Santa is discovered to be drunk by a whiskered old man. While he is successful, Ms. Walker learns that he calls himself Kris Kringle and he claims to be the actual Santa Claus. Despite reassurances by Kringle‘s doctor that he is harmless, Doris st ill has misgivings, especially when she has cynically trained herself, and especially her daughter, Susan, to reject all notions of belief and fantasy. And yet, people, especially Susan, begin to notice there is something special about Kris and his determination to advance the true spirit of Christmas amidst the rampant commercialism around him and succeeding in improbable ways. When a raucous conflict with the store‘s cruelly incompetent psychologist erupts, Kris finds himself held at Bellevue where, in despair, he deliberates fails a mental examination to ensure his commitment. All seems lost until Doris‘ friend, Fred Gaily, reassure Kris of his worth and agrees to represent him in the fight to secure his release. ● Qs & As;

Sample Answers:

1. What special festivals are there in China?

There are many traditional festivals to celebrate, such as Spring Festival, Mid-autumn Festival and Lantern Festival. Spring Festival is regarded as the most important festival to celebrate.

2. Do Chinese people celebrate western festivals?

Yes, some western festivals are celebrated by more and more Chinese people, for example, Christmas. Almost all the young people in big cities celebrate it. And you can feel a strong festival atmosphere on the day as Christmas decoration in everywhere. Celebrating Valentine‘s Day is also quite popular.

● Debate;

Reference:

As cultural exchanges expand between China and the west, it appears that some Chinese are more eager for foreign festivals rather than their own and traditional Chinese festivals.

Some people proposed to give more holidays at some Chinese traditional festivals each year to remind the younger generation at home and abroad of the traditions of China. They think this could not only help traditional Chinese culture to prosper, but enhance patriotism and love for the homeland among Chinese offspring.

An investigation shows that youngsters love foreign festivals because of the joy and pleasure in them. As to the difference between foreign festivals and traditional festivals in China, some think that Chinese festivals rest on material activit ies of eating and clothing, while foreign ones pay much attention to communication of feelings and ideas. Meanwhile, others think they become too tired during traditional festivals but feel free and easy going during foreign festivals.

With social development, festivals experience changes. Some are weakened, some are strengthened, while others are endowed with new meanings or connotations. This is the natural process of cultural selection. Therefore, it is unnecessary to feel panic about the bustle of foreign festivals. This is only an aspect of world culture integration.

● Presentation;

Sample:

I would like to introduce Chinese Lantern Festival to you. Among all the festivals, I like Chinese Lantern Festival best. It marks the end of the Chinese New Year Season, always 15 days after Lunar New Year Day. And after this festival, life becomes daily routine once again. That is also because the spring festival holiday always ends about the time. I think this is a festival for people to have fun and is very much celebrated by rural people. On the night of the festival, people eat a kind of sweet dumpling as the traditional food for the day, made with sticky rice flour filled with sweet stuffing. Actually, the festival is named after the food. After dinner, they go on the streets with a variety of lanterns under the full moon. In some places, people can watch lions or dragon dancing. In some towns, some lantern riddle gathering is held for people to watch. Here are all kinds of lanterns with riddle on each of them. People who guess them right can get a small gift. I always eat many sweet dumplings on the day as I like the food a lot. I also enjoy the lantern scene on the streets, which adds to the beauty of the town and symbolizes good luck for the new year.

● Summary

Thanksgiving Day falls on the fourth Thursday of November, a different date every year. It is a time for tradition and sharing. Even if they live far away, family members gather for a reunion at the house of an older relative. All give thanks together for the good things that they have. In this spirit of sharing, civic groups and charitable organizations offer a traditional meal to those in need, particularly the homeless. On most tables throughout the United States, foods eaten at the first thanksgiving have become traditional.

Christmas Day

Christmas Day falls on the twenty-fifth of December. It is a very happy day for many boys and girls. Before the term ends in some schools, the children act a nativity or ―birth‖ play, showing how Jesus was born in a stable.

On the twenty-fourth of December, all children are very excited. Usually they are sent to bed early so that their parents can get the presents ready. The younger children think that Father Christmas will come down the chimney or fireplace, so they hang up a sock for him to put presents in. The greedy ones even hang up a pillow-case or a sack to try to get more presents. Later that night, Father or Mother will put presents in the sock, and leave others at the side of the bed.

On Christmas morning, the children wake up very early. Some even turn on the light at two o‘clock and most of them are awake by six o‘clock although it is not light in England for another hour or two at this time of the year.

Children look for their presents, and the young ones play while the dinner is prepared. At about one o‘clock in the afternoon, the Christmas dinner is brought in. The turkey or chicken is quickly eaten. Children search in their Christmas pudding for new coins which are hidden in it. The rest of the day is full of games and eating until the happiest of all Christmas holidays comes to an end.

Sample Answers:

1. In what ways are European universities different from American universities?

First, European students enroll in a few courses each term than American students do. Second, European students seldom live at a university. Instead, they live at home and travel to class. Third, most European courses are given by professors who lecture to their class. In contrast, American professors often ask their students questions or allow them to form discussion groups. Fourth, European professors ask students to write fewer papers than American professors do. Consequently, European students‘ final examinations are usually oral, whereas American students

take written final examinations. Finally, a European university is mainly a place to study. But at most American universities, soc ial activities take up a large part of students‘ time.

2. In what way is college life different from that in high school?

A College life is different from that in high school in several ways. Firstly, the most important difference is that most college students have to leave their parents and learn how to live independently. But if you are a high school student, your parents will look after you carefully. For example, we college students should learn how to get along well with all kinds of people in our life without our parents' advices. Secondly, the main task is different. In high school, we should study hard to pass the college entrance examination. But in college, we should do well in both study and other aspects such as the ability of cooperation, conquering difficulties and so on. In general, we college students are no longer little children, we should live independently and try to be excellent in many aspects besides study.

● Debate;

Reference:

Much of the current debate over education surrounds the extent to which learning should be teacher-based or student-based. Which of the two should decide what should be learned, how it should be learned, and when it should be learned?

Comparing Western and Asian methods of learning, it is generally true that Western methods are more student-centered, expecting students to discover things for themselves rather than relying on their teachers to tell them. An extreme version of the student-centered approach can be seen at Summerhill, a school in England established by the educationalist A. S. Neill. There children have complete freedom to decide what they are going to learn and which lessons they will attend. But the curriculum and the importance of achieving good exam results tend to reinforce a more teacher-centered approach, as both teachers and students find the pressure of time leaves less opportunity for an exploratory approach to learning.

The extent to which learning is teacher-centered or student-centered also depends on differences between subjects. In recent years, for example, there has been a trend in the teaching of mathematics in school classroom in England, away from having pupils work on their own or in small groups towards a more traditional approach, with the teacher guiding the entire class step-by-step through a lesson. This followed research that suggested that, as far as maths was concerned, a more teacher-centered method was more effective.

● Presentation;

The entire teaching of Confucius was practical and ethical, rather than religious. He claimed to be a restorer of ancient morality and held that proper outward acts based on the five virtues of

kindness, uprightness, decorum, wisdom, and faithfulness constitute the whole of human duty. Reverence for parents, living and dead, was one of his key concepts. His view of government was paternalistic, and he enjoyed all individuals to observe carefully their duties toward the state. In subsequent centuries his teachings exerted a powerful influnce on the Chinese nation.

The methods of education in East and West are quite different and both educational systems have advantages and disadvantages. Take Japan and Canada as example, people in Japan are culturally homogeneous, and therefore, they emphasize group goals and discipline. The teacher‘s role in education is to provide information and ask the students to copy and memorize. By contrast, people living in Canada are culturally heterogeneous, they believe in individualism. In class, teachers‘ task is to stimulate ideas and formation of opinions, through discussion, students learn to think creatively and solve problems on their own.

Desirable Personal Qualities in a Teacher

Teachers are playing an important role in education. What personal qualities are preferred in a teacher? Probably no two people would give the same answer to this question. But the following would be generally agreed.

Firstly, the teacher's personality should be favorably lively and attractive. Those over-excitable, unfriendly, sarcastic people can never be good teachers.

Secondly, it is not only desirable but essential for a teacher to have real capacity for sympathy—a capacity to understand the feelings of students and a capacity to be tolerant of mistakes.

Thirdly, a teacher should know how to appreciate students' progress. Being strict doesn't mean you don't encourage children. Children would prefer to correct their mistakes when you encourage them. Positive words are always better for helping children.

In addition, teachers should be able to enliven the lessons with imaginative performances that keep students involved. That is part of the technique of teaching, which demands that every now and then a teacher should put on an act to make his lesson interesting and vivid.

Finally, a teacher should also be a learner. Teaching is a job; it will never be perfect. There is always something more to learn about it. There are three important things in teaching: the subjects, the method of teaching and the most important—the learners. A good relationship between two persons—the teacher and the learner—makes a good education.

New Colleague: I hope you give me more instructions on conducting price negotiation.

Manager: You‘re being modest, young fellow! I think we really need to grasp the main points of price negotiations.

New Colleague: What are they? Can you explain in detail?

Manager: It usually involves five key points. They are: discount, unit price, quantity, terms of payment, delivery arrangements.

New Colleague: You mean those five main points will affect the price decision, don‘t you?

Manager: Yes. So theoretically, you should bear in mind the steps it usually takes. Let me ex - plain to you by drawing this sketch and show you an example.

New Colleague: That‘s very kind of you.

Manager: If you‘re a buyer, you would probably start with a question ―What discount do you offer on, say, 100 units of fax machine?‖ Then the seller would make an offer by saying―I can offer a discount of 25% on 100 units.‖ Then what would you say?

New Colleague: I would suggest what I want by saying ―I‘m looking for a larger discount than 25 %.‖

Manager: You are perfectly correct! So it‘s my turn to make a new offer, say, ―If you buy 300 units, then I can offer you a discount of 30%.‖

New Colleague: Aha—hm…I would immediately respond to what you said by counter-offering: ―Offer me a discount of 35 % on 300 units and…‖

Manager: I would say, ―I can‘t do that, I‘m sorry.‖ or ―it‘s not in my authority.‖

New Colleague: Maybe I can reduce the quantity of the units ―I will order by saying, ―OK, how about meeting halfway? I‘ll order 200 units on your 30 % offer.‖

Manager: I think that will be acceptable.‖ Ha-ha-! That‘s it!

Mike: Hi, I'm Mike. I‘m now interested in investment but I don‘t know where to get started?

George: We‘re here today to present you with three basic guidelines to smart investing, for your future.

Mike: Great! That‘s what I am expecting.

George: Number one is to have clear goals. Decide how many years you will invest for, and what your needs will be in the future.

Mike: I want to invest for a long term.

George: Number two is to understand the range of possibilities.

Mike: What does it mean? Could you explain that in detail?

George: You‘ll want a diversified portfolio: one with a mix of stocks, mutual funds, bonds, and cash. It‘s a jungle out there. Each of these products has different risks associated with them and also diff erent potential rewards. Understand them before you buy, so there won‘t be any big surprises later.

Mike: And then what should I do?

George: Finally, number three is to have realistic expectations. As our friend Leonardo da Vinci said in the year 1500: ―He who wishes to be rich in a day will be hanged in a year.‖Mike: But most people want to earn more money in as short time as possible.

George: It could be understood but is unrealistic. Over the past several years, New York stocks have averaged 30% annual returns, but don‘t count on this continuing. While it‘s true that since the year 1900, stocks have averaged an 11% annual return, it‘s a roller-coaster ride with many minus years as well, so you have to stay in for the long term—you have to weather the storm—and not be too greedy.

Mike: It‘s not as simple as I have expected. Thanks a lot!

Susan: Could you give me an approximate timeline?

Doug: A number of deliveries are arriving tomorrow. Unfortunately, this time of year is often troublesome.

Susan: That‘s not good. We can‘t make excuses to our clients. Are all shipments affected? Doug: No, but it is summer and some companies are cutting back until September.

Susan: Where are most of our suppliers located?

Doug: Well, most of them are in China, but there are a few in California.

Susan: How does that affect deliveries?

Doug: Well, there are weather delays and shipment delays due to reduced production. Sometimes, larger packages are delayed because of a bottleneck at the distribution point.

Susan: Is there any way around these delays?

Doug: Well, we often work with delivery services such as UPS, Fed ex or DHL for our most urgent shipping. They guarantee door-to-door deliveries within 48 hours.

Susan: Are they expensive?

Doug: Yes, they‘re very expensive at that cuts into our botto m line.

What are the target countries for global investment?

China, India, Israel and Canada are primary target countries for U.S. venture capitalists. There seems to be a consensus among U.S. venture capitalists regarding where the most opportunities exists globally. Most of the U.S. firms who have invested globally are making investments in China, India, Israel, and Canada. However, even in these countries, the majority of U.S. venture capital companies are essentially dabbling, making only one to two investments thus far.

Allocation s by U.S. and non-U.S. firms alike for the most part represent less than 5 percent of capita l invested overseas in fewer than three to five deals. Recent surveys indicate that there will not be significant change during the next five years. While China, India, Israel, and Canada are by far the most seductive target markets for investment by U.S. firms, venture capitalists in non-US countries have a different focus. By far the greatest contrast is among European companies.

A strong preference for investing in other parts of Europe (67 percent) and the United States (17 percent), with the remainder focused on Asia. Asian companies have a similar level of interest in the United States (18 percent), but looked primarily inward to other Asian countries (78 percent). For the the Middle East the data shows some 18 t0 20% focus.

Predicaments for global investments are cited by US investors are as follows: As in an 2006 surveys, close to 60 percent of U.S. companies cited adequate deals and superior returns in the U.S. as the primary reason for not expanding globally. Next second predicament was not having adequate resources for global investment and not finding partners to invest together.

When fate places Remy in the sewers of Paris, he finds himself ideally situated beneath a restaurant made famous by his culinary hero, Auguste Gusteau. Despite the apparent dangers of being an unwanted visitor in the kitchen of a fine French restaurant, Remy‘s passion for cooking soon sets into motion a hilarious and exciting rat race that turns the culinary world of Paris upside down.

There are two substantial obstacles in his way. His father has no tolerance for Remy‘s refined tastes when he sees so much perfectly decent garbage all around them to feast on. He worries that Remy‘s passion could split up the rat family. Perhaps a much bigger obstacle, however, is the simple fact that Remy is a rat and that no self-respecting person would ever want to eat food prepared by a rodent, no matter how good of a cook he may be. Despite all this, Remy makes friends with an apprentice chef who works at the restaurant, finds his way into the kitchen, and risks his life preparing the most extraordinary soup. His first successful concoction proves that he may have a superior endowment at cooking. Unfortunately, Remy is playing a risky game because the jealous head-chef and all of the restaurant‘s employees want him eliminated as soon as possible.

In this animation,Remy learns the truth about friendship, family and having no choice but to be who he really is, a rat who wants to be a chef.

One of the most interesting features of American cooking is its variety. As with any large country, the U.S. has several distinct regions. Each region boasts its own special style of food.

Americans living at a fast pace often just ―grab a quick bite.‖ Fast food restaurants offer people on the run everything from fried chicken to fried rice.

Americans on the go also tend to eat a lot of ―junk food‖. Potato chips, candy bars, soft drinks and other goodies are popular treats. Many people eat too many of these unhealthy snacks. But others opt for more healthy eating habits. Some even go ―all natural.‖ They refuse to eat any food prepared with chemicals or additives.

2. Please search for information about the American customs of dinner invitations and explain them in class.

Sample:

It is common both in China and in the West to invite friends and acquaintances to dinner. However, the customs with this are often very different in the two cultures, and so both westerners and Chinese may easily fell confused, misunderstandings may then result.

The role of the host:

The typical western guest dinner may include the courses as follows:

----- A starter/ Appetizer, such as soup, fruit juice or salad.

----- The Main Course, which usually consists of one type of meat or fish served with potatoes, vegetables and a sauce, and perhaps a side of dish such as a small salad.

------ The Dessert, which is something sweet, such as fruit pie and ice-cream.

------ Tea and coffee is often served after the three courses, and may be accompanied cheese and biscuits, or something sweet like a mint chocolate.

The role of the guest:

If you are invited to an American friend‘s home for dinner, keep in mind two general rules for polite behavior. You should arrive approximately on time(but not early). It‘ s OK to be 10 or 15 minutes late but not 45 minutes late.Dinner might be ruined by then. When you are invited to someone‘s home for a meal,it‘s polite to bring a small gift.Flowers or candy are always appropriate.

After the guests have arrived and the meal is about to be served, the host will ask everyone to sit down at the table.

During the main course, most of the dishes are placed in the center of the table, so the guests can take as much or as little as they want.

In Western culture, when eating at a person‘s home, it is considered impolite to leave anything but a very small amount of food on your plate, so it is important to eat almost everything that is served.

During the course of the meal, and especially near the beginning, it is polite for guests to compliment the host on the food. Sentences such as the following can be used for this: —This is really delicious.

—This meat is beautifully tender.

—This dish is very tasty.

At the end of the meal, and also when leaving, it is polite for the guests to thank the host and to comment again that they enjoyed the food.

Task 2 Questions for Discussion

1. Describe your eating habit?

Sample Answers:

My schedule is so tight that I often skip breakfast.

Sometimes I eat junk food, I know it‘s not good for health, but I‘m really too busy to eat at table. My friends warn me to keep regular meals, and I know they are right, but I just find it hard to change a habit.

I have three meals on weekdays, but over the weekend I have two meals because I like to sleep in.

I have a hearty breakfast; I know it‘s important to eat well in the morning.

I have a light breakfast, because in the morning I don‘t have an appetite.

I have a light supper I seldom eat too much for dinner for it is not easily digested.

A big meal for me is usually my supper.

2. What similarities and differences are there between Western and Chinese food customs?

You shouldn‘t arrive too early if you‘re invited to a dinner party by an American. Because the host and hostess are still busy running around finishing last minutes chores. But in China, you‘d better arrive earlier; otherwise, the host will think you‘re impolite. If you‘re invited for the fist time, you could bring a small gift. This case is the same betw een American and Chinese. In Chinese culture, it is polite to reject a food the first time it is offered, and the host will offer him more foods again and again, which is a sign of friendliness. For this reason, a visitor to the U.S. may say ―no‖ the first time the host offers him something to eat. He will expect the host to repeat the offer. However, in the U.S., the host may think that the guest really does not want the food. 3. Food likes and dislikes in china vary greatly from the North to the South and from the

West to the East. Can you give some examples to show this?

Due to its attraction in color, flavor and taste, Chinese food has long enjoyed a good reputation. There are many kinds of food in China. They‘re Cantonese food, Sichuan food, Shanghai food and so on. Generally speaking, Cantonese food is a bit light; Sichuan food is very spicy, and Shanghai food is rather oily, having a strong and hot taste. Steamed fish in sweet, sour pork ribs, spring roll and many Chinese dishes are very delicious. In the north of China, people eat

a lot of noodles and dumplings. In the south of China, people eat a lot of rice and seafood.

4. Do you have any taboos on foods and why?

Yes, I have.

I don‘t eat sea foods and spicy foods, because I‘m sensitive to them.

I don‘t eat too oily foods as my stomach always suffer from indigestion.

I don‘t eat fried foods as I‘m afraid I‘ll put on weight.

I don‘t eat pork as I‘m a Muslim.

5. What is a balanced diet supposed to contain?

A balanced diet must contain carbohydrate, protein, fat, vitamins, mineral salts and fiber. It must contain these things in the correct proportions. The approximate proportions are as follows: carbohydrate should contain 68% of the diet, protein should contain 17% of the diet, and fat should contain 15% of the diet. We also need other nutrients in smaller amounts, such as vitamins, minerals and fiber. Too much or too little of any of the above nutrients can cause illnesses. If you eat a balanced diet, the risk of illnesses such as heart disease, and obesity are reduced.

6. What consideration drives you to pick up the food, taste or nutrition?

Well, most of the time, I consider both taste and nutrition while choosing what to eat. I want balanced diets with bot h green vegetables and meats. And I‘ll try to have different staples at different meals, for example, if I had rice during lunch, I‘ll have corn or noodle at supper. Of course, taste is important as well, because good taste can help us eat more and I believe one reason why we eat everyday is to satisfy the desire of our senses of taste.

Task 5 Debate;

For Reference:

Pros: Western Fast-Food

Fast food is becoming more and more popular in China, especially among children and teenagers. There are several reasons for its popularity. Firstly, it is very convenient and saves a lot of time. You just go into a fast food restaurant, order your food, and your food is ready in time. Secondly, you can either eat it there or take it away. Thirdly, the environment of fast food restaurants is both clean and comfortable. Fourthly, it has excellent service, and the quality of food is guaranteed.

Some famous traditional Chinese dishes are made of precious wild animals. We should protect the wild animals and our environment. Actually, the outbreak of infectious diseases in China is partly attributed to the unreasonable eating of wild animals.

The cuisine of traditional Chinese dishes is so complicated that they require a long time to prepare. As a resu lt, it can‘t be spread easily.

As is surveyed, Chinese food contains too much fat and cholesterol, which can lead to heart and blood vessel diseases.

Cons: Traditional Chinese Food

There are several disadvantages of the fast food. Firstly, Fast food is usually not a balanced diet and low in nutritional value. Secondly, fast food is not good for people‘s health. Fast food is only a good choice when you are in a hurry and turn to it once in a while. But for people, especially children, eat fast food as little as possible.

On the contrary, traditional Chinese food is famous for its color, flavor and taste. It not only seems delicious but also displayed beautifully. In addition, traditional Chinese food abounds in sufficient supplying of nutritive elements. Act ually, Chinese dishes have earned world‘s fame. The Chinese eateries could be found everywhere throughout the world. Many foreigners regard having a Chinese meal as a high honor.

V Writing Tasks

● Summary

This essay is about the connection between the food and culture. People from different cultures have different ideas about food. Some people think the foods that other people eat are disgusting. But dislike is not the only reason why some cultures will not eat a certain food. In some cultures, certain foods are taboo. They are forbidden to eat. For example, in India, people won‘t kill the cows and eat them, because cows help them plow the fields and cow manure is also very useful. Americans can‘t eat dogs, because dogs are pets and have value as protection against criminal. The ancient Israelites regarded pork as taboo because they were nomads. It‘s clear that most food likes and dislikes are a result of the ways of life of different people.

Changes in People’s Diet

From the chart we can see that during the past five years there have been great changes in people‘s diet. The greatest change occurs in grain consumption, which has dropped 4% from 49% in 1986 to 45% in 1990 in total food consumption. On the contrary, the proportion of milk and meat consumption in people‘s diet has increased.

These changes in people‘s diet show some modifications in people‘s living standard and life style. Since China began her economic reform in 1978, various kinds of food have appeared in the market, milk and meat, which were seldom seen on people‘s dinner tables before, have now become popular food in Chinese families.

As the living standard of the Chinese people is rising, we look forward to further changes in people‘s diet. In the future, the proportion of milk and meat is likely to go on increasing and the proportion of fruit and vegetables is likely to increase as well.

My Favorite Pastime

I usually spend my leisure time on a variety of things such as watching TV, reading novels, swimming and playing table tennis. But if you ask me what is my favorite pastime, I would respond to you without hesitation that it is operating my computer.

I‘m fond of playing computer games and surfing on the Internet. Many people assume that playing games does harm to one‘s health, especially to the eyes. But I don‘t agree. In my opinion,

playing computer games benefits me greatly. First of all, playing computer games is a relaxation that gives me a sense of accomplishment. Secondly, I can obtain a lot of knowledge which I can‘t find in textbooks. For example, when I played Civilization, I became aware of the significance of science. Last but not the least, I have to pick up the English-Chinese dictionary from time to time as most of the games are in English. So the more I play, the greater progress I make in English. The games are not only entertaining, but also instructive.

I also like surfing on the Internet. There is a large amount of information on the internet. It has become more and more popular and important. People say those who control the Internet will eventually control the world. It may be an illusion but I want to be qualified in the future.

In short, I prefer playing with my computer. It appeals to my curiosity and my desire to know more about the society.

How People Spend Their Leisure Time

Many people are often very busy with various things in their work or their home life so they can hardly spare any time for entertainment. But this is really bad for one‘s health. So we should make efforts to look for relaxation. As a proverb says, ―All work and no play makes jack a dull boy.‖

People in different regions may have different forms of activities. In China, one of the most popular activities is traveling, especially going to the remote areas which are not seriously polluted. These isolated locations appeal to people who are looking forward to getting closer to nature because they have been tired of city life.

Other people who can‘t afford the time or the money for travel will stay at home, watching TV, going to the movies or concerts, or inviting some friends to have a party. Children prefer to go to the park, play computer games, and take part in a variety of sports. Young women choose to go shopping whereas young men prefer to stay at home, watching a football match.

The popularity of pastimes changes with age, personality and financial situations. Whatever o ne‘s pastime is, it‘s definite that after it he or she will feel refreshed, relaxed and ready to start a new day‘s work. Pastimes provide a way to take one‘s mind away from the pressures of everyday life.

No one survived the accident. 3.学生们可以很容易地获得图书馆的资源,所以他们应该充分地利用好图书馆。 Students have easy access to the resources in the library, so they are supposed to make the best of it. 4.当时世界上最豪华的游轮泰坦尼克号在她前往美国的途中撞到了冰山,结果轮船沉没在大西洋中,成百上千的人死于这场海难。 Titanic, the most luxurious ship in the world at that time , hit an iceberg when she was under way to the US.
