A

Charles Dickens is often thought of as one of the greatest British writers. February 7 marked the 200th anniversary of his birthday. Yet for many, his language is old-fashioned and his stories often improbable. Then why do so many people know and read Dickens today?

One reason is the British government's insistence that every child study a Dickens novel at school. Alongside William Shakespeare, Dickens is on every English literature school reading list.

His stories, though often long by today's standards, are great moral tales. They are filled with colorful characters.

Earlier this month, a ceremony was held in Portsmouth, where Dickens was born. Prince Charles said at the ceremony: " ...(Dickens) used his creative talents to campaign passionately for social justice... His characterization is as fresh today as on the day it was written."

His books stand out from many other writers because of his insight (洞察力) into human nature. Dickens, like Shakespeare, tells us truths about human behaviour. They are as true in the 2Is1 century as they were to his readers in the 19th century.

Readers have returned to Dickens' books again and again over the years to see what he has to say about their own times.

No surprise then that it was Dickens whom Britons turned to during the economic crisis in the last couple of years. Dickens helped them make sense of a world that was rapidly falling apart. The BBC adapted one of his less well-known novels, Little Dorrit, into a popular television drama that introduced many Brits to the novel for the first time. A dark story about greed and money, it was the perfect illustration of bad times.

As long as Dickens' novels have something to say to modern audiences, it seems likely that he will remain one of Britain's best-loved writers.

56. In the article, the author intends to tell us .

A.why Dickens' novels still appeal to readers in modern times

B.that Dickens' works are no longer popular among young people

C.why the British government puts Dickens on school reading lists

D.that Dickens and Shakespeare's works are required for study at school

c)his colorful characters

d)his insight into human nature

e)government education requirement

f)his description of the current economic crisis

A. abdf

B. bcde

C. bdef

D. abed

58. We can infer from the article that .

A.it's better to read Dickens in time of difficulty

C.human nature seems worse during bad times

D.Dickens predicted economic crisis would happen

During the outbreak of 2009-2010 H1N1 or "swine flu", the same virus that caused mild coughing and sneezing in some patients proved deadly for others. It highlighted a medical mystery: why are some people more fit to handle the flu than others?

British and American researchers think they have a clue. Reporting on Sunday in the journal Nature, researchers say they've found a gene that influences our ability to fight against flu illness. The gene, called IFITM3, is the "important first line of defense" against the flu, researcher Paul Kellam of Britain's Sanger Institute told Reuters.

The IFITM3 protein(蛋白) prevents flu viruses from reproducing in cells. So, if you have a high amount of IFITM3,you're in luck, since it weakens the spread of the virus; a low amount can lead to more rapid viral reproduction, causing severe flu symptoms, according to Kellam.

Scientists first found in gene studies that IFITM3 played a role in resistance to flu and other viruses. In experiments in mice, they showed that when mice were raised to lack the IFITM3 gene and then infected with influenza, the animals developed more severe lung infection from flu, compared with mice that had the gene.

To figure out the role of IFTTM3 in humans, researchers then studied the IFITM3 genes of 53 patients with the flu in 2009-2010. They found that these patients were more likely to have a variant of the IFITM3 gene — which makes people more vulnerable to flu — compared with the general population. According to evidence from large genetic databases, about 1 in 400 people carries this IFITM3 variant, the BBC reports.

"Our research is important for people who have this variant as we predict their immune defenses could be weakened to some virus infections," said Kellam.

The Findings also suggest that a drug that functions as IFITM3 could help increase resistance to flu and other viruses, including deadly ones like H5N1 flu.

63. What does the underlined word 'vulnerable' mean in the fifth paragraph?

A. resistant

B. accessible

C. adjustable

D. defenseless

64. You are less likely to get infected with H1N1 if

A. a variant of EFIM3 is produced

B.the immune system is weakened

A.Why Flu Hits Some People Harder

B.How We Protect Ourselves From Flu

D

He looked like a pirate.

With his handkerchief tied in a knot behind his little nine-year-old head, he looked like a pirate, a sad pirate. The first time little David came to our camp, he was hairless and worn out from medical treatments. He was also very angry.

Paul Newman's camp counselors (指导老师) were hoping to fill David's days with fun and laughter. But David stayed inside himself, wanting to be alone, or in a corner of the cabin. At this camp for children with life-threatening illnesses, we had seen some pretty tough children worn out by cancer recover full of energy despite their illness. But we saw little progress in David no matter what we tried with him. Five days into the eight-day session saw a quiet, sad little pirate.

Then something happened on that fifth night. Something at camp that we would call "huge".

It was cabin night. That's the time when campers and counselors spend lime together in each individual cabin instead of an all-camp activity. Campers love cabin nights because there's always a bedtime snack. On the cabin table that night were bags of potato chips.

David slowly walked over to the table, leaving his comer to join the rest of us. He took one of the bags of the potato chips and started smashing(弄碎) it with his little fists, as all the other campers looked on in disbelief, I wondered what the cabin counselor would do.

The college-age volunteer counselor positioned a bag of chips on die table in front of himself, and he, too, started smashing it with his fist. The campers went crazy as everyone ran to the table to get in on the fun of smashing potato chips with their fists.

Somehow everyone knew, everyone sensed, that anger within him was now being released.

For the last couple days of the session, David was a different kid. He was a little nine-year-old boy again, trying to fill the hours of each remaining day at camp with as much fun as could be possible.

Several days after the session, David came back again. This time, there wasn't anything he wouldn't try to fit in to his day. He sure was having a great time at camp. David asked me if I needed an altar(祭坛)boy when I celebrated Mass in the woods. Sure enough, he was my altar boy. I remembered how carefully he listened to me when I talked about death. 1 said it's only a doorway. You walk through the door and there's the Lord God and behind God a whole line of people waiting to hug you.

After Mass, he said to me, "Hey Fatha, a door, huh?"

A couple more days of fun passed and tonight was the talent show. The tradition is that campers and counselors dress up in costumes, and everyone gets a standing applause for singing and dancing or simply just acting like fools on stage.

The show had begun: lights, camera, action.

Unfortunately, the only action taking place in our row of seats was little David making his way from counselor to counselor to say an early good-bye to camp. He had become quite ill and had to go to the hospital because of this new crisis.

When this little nine-year-old pirate stood in front of me, he gave me a hug and a big wet kiss on my cheek. 1 was crying. He was crying. A whole row of counselors was in tears. After the hug and kiss, he put his hands on my shoulders, and tears still in his eyes, said: "See you on the other side of the door, Fatha."

66.The camp counselors failed to fill David's beginning days with fun and laughter, mainly because David .

A.behaved like a pirate

B.remained in a bad mood

C.was left alone at the camp

D.was teased by other campers

67.Seeing David smashing the potato chips, the counselor did the same thing in response because he .

A.would like David to eat more of them

B.hoped all the other campers would join

C.found it possible to help David release anger

D.wanted to show that he was as angry as David

68.What can we learn from this article?

A.The camp was intended for those talented in singing and dancing.

B.The purpose of the camp was to give diseased children caring love.

C.The camp was popular among the children who enjoyed their vacation here.

D.Medical treatment could be provided to diseased children at the camp.

69.Which of the following does NOT show the change in David?

A.David came back to the camp for a second session after the first ended.

B.David had become quite ill and had to go to the hospital because of this new crisis.

C.David made his way from counselor to counselor to say an early good-bye to camp.

D.David stood in front of me and gave me a hug and a big wet kiss on my cheek.

70. What do you think the theme of the story is?

A.Children with deadly diseases are usually difficult to get along with.

B.People should have patience with children with life-threatening illnesses.

C.People should tell children with life-threatening illnesses to care nothing about death.

D.Love and proper guidance can help people look at something negative in a positive way.

Is True Friendship Dying Away?

Just as our daily life is becoming more technologically connected, we are losing other more meaningful relationship.

To anyone paying attention these days, it's clear that social media — whether Twitter, Facebook, or Iinkedln— are changing the way we conduct relationship. Face-to-face chatting is giving way to texting and messaging; people even prefer these electronic exchanges to, for instance, simply talking on a phone. Among these smaller trends, growing research suggests we could be entering a period of crisis for the entire concept of friendship. Where is all this leading modern-day society? Perhaps to a dark place, a lonelier society where electronic craze slowly replaces the joys of human contact.

Typically, the pressures of urban life are blamed. Witness crowded bars and restaurants after work: We have plenty of acquaintances, though perhaps few individuals we can turn to and share close relationships. American sociologists have tracked related trends on a broader scale, well beyond the urban jungle. According to work published in the American Sociological Review, the average American has only two close friends, and a quarter don't have any.

While social networking sites and the like have grown dramatically, the crucial element is the quality of the connections they establish. A connection may only be a click away, but establishing a good friendship takes more. It seems common sense to conclude that "friending" online brings about shallow relationships as the term "friending" itself implies.

No single person is at fault, of course. The pressures on friendship today are broad.

They arise from the demands of work, or a general busyness that means we have less quality time for others. How many individuals would say that friendship is the most important thing in their lives, only to move thousands of miles across the continent to take up a better-paid job?

Of course, we learn how to make friends or not in our childhood. Recent studies on childhood and how the contemporary life of the child affects friendships are illuminating(启示). A central conclusion often reached relates to a lack of what is called "unstructured time". Structured time results from the way an average day is arranged for our kids—time for school, time for homework, time for music practice, even time for play. Yet too often today, no period is left unstructured. After all, who these days lets his child just wander off down the street? We simply "hang out", with no tasks, no deadlines and no pressures. It is in those moments that children and adults alike can get to know others for who they are in themselves.

Aristotle had an attractive expression to capture the thought: close friends, he observed, " share salt together." It's not just that they sit together, passing the salt across the meal table. It's that they sit with one another across the course of their lives, sharing its moments, bitter and sweet. " The desire for friendship comes quickly; friendship does not." Aristotle also remarked.

If there is a secret to close friendship, that's it. Put down the device; engage the person.Title: Is True Friendship Dying Away?

One possible version:

One possible version:

In the picture we can see bird parents fly away from the big tree to find more food for their families, leaving their children behind at home. The small birds are lonely and sad in their empty nests. We can imagine the difficulty they will have living on their own.

The picture actually reflects a social phenomenon. In many rural areas of China, parents go to big cities to do migrant jobs though their young children need their love and care. As a result, new problems have arisen. Statistics show many children face psychological and emotional challenges. Some struggle to keep up with their lessons and end up dropping out to follow in the footsteps of their parents. Some others form bad habits or even commit crimes.

It’s high time to solve these problems. First, the local government should create more job opportunities for these breadwinners. Second, teachers should give left-behind children more caring love by visiting their homes regularly. As middle school students, we can ask them to live together with us in our own homes.(159)

M: I missed Professor Brown’s lecture t his afternoon because I had to finish my experiment. What did you think of the lecture?

W: Well, it was not difficult to understand, but it was not interesting and much longer than I had expected. So you were lucky.

M: What did he talk about?

W: Oh you know, the usual physics stuff. He told us about our mid-term examination though. M: Oh great! What did he say?

W: The test will be worth 50% of our final grade. It is 100 questions and we have 2 hours to complete it.

Text 7:

W: Hello. Mr. Green? This is Wanda speaking.

M: Oh, Mrs. Reed. What’s the matter? I am waiting for you here.

W: Good morning. I am driving to your house now, but it looks like it will be impossible for me to get there by eight o’clock because of the traffic. That’s why I’m calling you to apologize.

M: That’s too bad. Where are you now? How long do you think it will take you to get here?

W: I’m near Yorkshire Station. I think it will take at least one more hour, so I should be there around 8:30. I am very sorry to keep you waiting. I should have left the hotel a little bit earlier. M: That’s quite all right, Mrs. Reed. Don’t worry about it. Take your time.

W: Thank you, Mr. Green.

M: Bye.

Text 8:

M: Excuse me, madam.

M: I’m sorry. I’m just trying to do my job but I’m afraid you’re making it rather difficult. However, I must insist on seeing what you have in your bag.

W: And what do you expect to find in there? Jewels?

M: Madam, if there’s nothing that doesn’t belong to you, you can leave right away and I’ll apologize for the inconvenience.

W: Oh, very well. Here you are.

M: Thank you… ten men’s watches?

W: Yes. I get very nervous if I don’t know the time.

M: I see you smoke a lot, too, madam. Fifteen cigarette lighters?

M: I bet you do, Madam. Well, I’m afraid I’m going to have to ask you to c ome along with me. W: How dare you…

Text 9:

M:Mary, what’s the date today?

W: Let me see. It’s the thirteenth.

M: I thought it was!

W: Yes, I promised to play tennis with Ann this evening.

M: Oh! I thought they were fixing the tennis courts.

W: They’ve already finished. The club opened again last nig ht. But why did you ask me about the date today? Isn’t it on the newspaper you’re reading?

M: Let me see. This isn’t today’s paper.

W: Oh! I thought it was.

M: I was wondering why the news seemed old. It’s yesterday’s.

W: Really, Bill! That’s just as good for finding today’s date, isn’t it?

M: All right, all right! I’m being stupid again! Where’s today’s paper, anyway?

W: I haven’t seen it. Is there anything important in it?

M: How do I know? I haven’t read today’s paper yet. I really want to find out what films are shown this week.

W: Oh, I see.

M: I thought perhaps you would like to come out with me to see a film on Saturday.

W: I’d love to, but I’m afraid I can’t. I’m going back home for the weekend and I’m leaving that day.

advice“建议,忠告”;question“问题,询问”;offer“提议,好意”;idea“主意,想法”。 22.【答案】B 【解析】分析句子成分可知此句为定语从句,各先行词people代入定语从句后为:people urgently needed clean water,medicine and shelter to survive,可知先行词在从句中作主语,所以排除C项;what不能引导定语从句,故排除D项;因为先行词为“人”,所以排除A项。 这句话和There is little doubt一致,little“几乎没有”是否定词,遵循前否后肯的原则,反意问句用is there?故选A。 26.【答案】D 【解析】A项run off with表示“与某人私奔,偷走”;B项run up against表示“遭遇(困难)”;C项run out of表示“用完,耗尽”;D项run away with表示“躲开,躲避,回避(责任等)”;根据句意,D项与题意相符。

D篇的句子猜题中"a book must be the ax for the frozen sea inside us", 运用了明喻和暗喻的写作手法等,以致学生感觉难度大、耗时多。
