Man has woefully misused the earth’s natural

resources through the ages. This has been done

largely through their ignorance of the consequences, (1)

but in the procedure he has succeeded in (2)

lying waste vast expanses of forests and croplands. (3)

If our expanding population is to suffer from (4)

shortages and pollution in the future, a great effort

must be made to repair some of the damage already

done and to stop more harm from done. A few (5)

people throughout the world are becoming less aware (6)

of our past mistakes and are striving to halting (7)

this destruction and to revert to the use of methods

from which will give us full use of our resources (8)

without destroying them. The job may be a long one,

require much study and patience. The most important (9)

thing is that those of us who live in towns or (10)

cities can do is to take interest in those problems (11)

and find out what is going on around us. Because (12)

much of the land we see is covered up with

sidewalks, streets, and buildings, and this does not (13)

mean we are not directly affected by what happens

to the water, and atmosphere of our country.

Not until the early nineteen-forties was any serious effort made to encourage new British music. The composers themselves banded together into committee and (1)

this by turn sponsored a plan by which reading (2)

panels of disqualified musicians were formed, (3)

whose duty it was to study the scores submitting (4)

to them, and to decide which works merited for an (5)

introduction to the public. Fortnightly

performances were arranged, with which the public (6)

was admitted freely, and compositions for small (7)

combinations of instruments presented by (8)

artists who gave their services for this good

course. There were some unusual features to (9)

these recitals. In the first place, the

members of the audience were supplied with a

carefully prepared form on which they were

asked to record their impressions of each work

heard, to say whether, in their opinion, it (10)

will be recommended to concert organizers for (11)

exclusion in their programs. This experiment (12)

in seeking mass opinion was given later, (13)

when it was found that the remarks became

stereotyped and unhelpful.

Go into any average provincial town and the last thing you will find is a decent book-shop. More than one great industrial town of a population of over a hundred thousand has only one such shop, and that is generally kept going by the sale of school-books.

It is because we cannot afford to buy books. We (1)

spend six hundred million pounds a year on the beer, (2)

but we certainly do not spend six hundred million pence

on literature. Many people can afford to buy (3)

motor-cars for seven hundred pounds (4)

would be ghastly at the idea of spending a single (5)

pound occasionally on a book. Y et, merely like (6)

furniture, books are cheaper and better decoration (7)

than blue china or eighteenth-century chairs. They

are better because put out the stamp of (8)

individuality upon a house. The desire of eighteenth (9)

century chairs and blue china may represent not as a (10)

genuine personal taste for beautiful things, but an

artful passion for rare and expensive ones. On (11)

the other hand, a collection of books will give a house

character and meaning. It will tell you about its

owner. A house without books is a mindless and

characterless house, and no matter how rich the Persian (12)

rugs and how elegant the settees and the ornaments.

The Persian rugs not only tell you that the owner has (13)

got money, but the books will tell you whether he has

got a mind as well.

The number of motor vehicles using the roads in Great Britain

has increased. It has increased at an enormous or (1)

unforeseen rate during the time which elapsed (2)

since the petrol-driven motor-car made its first

appearance in this country. Instead, not only has (3)

there been an increase in numbers, and what is also (4)

highly significant, there has been a great increase

in the speed and sizes of the vehicles, and it is (5)

this never-growing density of road traffic, as well (6)

as the high speed which it travels, that must be (7)

reckoned among the chief causes of road accidents.

During the later part of the last century the roads (8)

were fully capable of meeting all demands made

on them by the horse-pulled traffic for which they (9)

built, but the rapid increase in motor traffic (10)

has greatly out-stripped all the efforts that have

been made towards the modernization of existed (11)

roads and the construction of new ones. As a

consequence, the roads in general are able to (12)

meet all the demands when modern traffic imposes on (13)

them and at the same time afford reasonable safety

to the pedestrian, especially to the child pedestrian.

(30) Why does the idea of progress loom so large in the modern world? Surely because progress of particular kind is actually taking place around us and is more and more manifesting. Although mankind has undergone no general improvement in intelligence or morality, it has made extraordinary progress in the accumulation of knowledge. Knowledge begins to increase as soon as the thoughts of one individual could be communicated to another by mean of speech. With the invention of writing, knowledge could be communicated and stored. Libraries made education possible, and education in turn added libraries: the growth of knowledge followed a kind of compound-interest law, which was greatly enhanced by the invention of printing. All this was comparatively slow until, with the coming of science, the tempo was suddenly risen. Then knowledge began to be accumulated according to a systematic plan. However, as soon as new knowledge is acquired, it is now turned to practical account. What is called “modern civilization” is not the result of a balanced development of all man’s nature, but not of accumulated knowledge applied to practical life. The problem now facing humanity is: What is going to be done with all this knowledge? Like is often pointed out, knowledge is a two edged weapon which could be used equally for good or evil. It is now being frequently used indifferently for both. Could any spectacle, for instance, be more grimly whimsical than that gunners using science to shatter men’s bodies while, clo se at hand, surgeons use it to restore them. 1 ________ 2 ________ 3 ________ 4 ________ 5 ________ 6 ________ 7 ________ 8 ________ 9 ________ 10 _______

5 I think it is true to saying that, in general, language teachers (26) have paid little attention to the way sentences are used in combination to form stretches of disconnected discourse. They have tended to take (27) their cue from the grammarian and have concentrated to the teaching (28) of sentences as self-contained units. It is true that these are often represented in "contexts" and strung together in dialogues and (29) reading passages, but these are essentially setting to make the formal properties of the sentences stand out more clearly, properties which are then established in the learners brain(30) by means of practice drill and exercises. Basically, the language teaching unit is the (31)

Version 1: In reading recent newspapers, I have come to find that people in China have become more and more interested in discussing name cards and invitation letters. This reminds me of the name cards and invitation

letters of the French people that I saw when I was sojourning in Paris. In writing down those random reminiscences, I believe that they might provide some useful information for us to learn. In Paris, cocktail parties and buffet receptions of different kinds offer great opportunities for making friends. On such occasions, strangers may get to know each other. If they are Asians, they will, very respectfully and with both hands, present their calling cards to their interlocutors before any conversation starts. This seems to be the required courtesy on their part. The French, however, usually are not so ready with such a formality. Both sides will greet each other, and even chat casually about any topic and then excuse themselves. Only when they find they like each other and hope to further the relationship will they exchange cards. It will seem very unnatural to do so before any real conversation gets under way. The French tend to take extraordinary precaution in making their name cards, simple yet elegant. Exquisitely designed and printed, their name cards are seldom golden-framed, or colorfully shiny, or tinted with fragrant smells. The letters which appearing on their name cards tend to be diminutive but beautiful, not allowing the name of the card-bearer t be overly prominent / salient. The entire card leaves much empty space, imparting no sense of over-crowdedness.

(1) It is difficult to think of a nation as an abstract collection of people living on a patch of territory. It is easier to think of as a person. This is why we sometimes call Great Britain __1__ "Britannia" and the United States "Columbia", and think of it as stately women. We also use masculine symbols in our __2__ personification of nations. In 1712 John Arbuthont, a Scot, wrote a political satire in that the characters were supposed __3__ to be typical members of different nationalities. The Englishman was John Bull. This name, which was sufficient flattering to be __4__ adopted generally, combined the most common English first name with a last name indicated strength. John Bull is usually __5__ pictured as a partly businessman with a Union Jack on his hatband. After the American War of Independence began in 1783, the United __6__States was knownfor "Brother Jonathan". Jonathan was a biblical __7__ name associated with simple people from rural areas, and it seemed fitting since the United States is rural and unsophiscated, and since __8__American considered their type of simplicity a virtue compared to __9__ the wickedness of European cities. It is possible, however, that the name was originated with President George Washington,
