good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, dear students of ningbo foreign language school and you, 14 excellent contestants,it’s my great pleasure to be here for the very

first time as a judge for this english speech competition. i think all the contestants did a great job today, so let’s give a big round of applause to all of them. another round of applause goes to the teacher for having chosen such an interesting topic like open to the world cultures and to everyone who has contributed to organize the competition and has helped to making it a success. i have been really enjoying this contest thoroughly, especially because all the 14 contestants have approached the topic from different perspectives. all speeches have been well

researched, with good thoughts as well as interesting ideas. i am very pleased to see that most of you delivered your speech with good pronunciation, clear articulation, with good eye contact and a proper manner. on top of all this you all have also demonstrated your remarkable analytical abilities.

as an english teacher, i’m always very happy when i see young people who are doing such a terrific job. the importance of todays goes beyond the competition itself. your school and this competition continue to promote international communication, and will help you to progress and to have more and more opportunities in your future life.

i am so impressed with this successful speech competition and with this beautiful school that as the mother of a grade 6 primary student i wish that my daughter will have the opportunity to study here , so she can learn to speak english more fluently, just like you all.

i always like to say that ”life is a journey”. language learning is a life long experience and we never finish learning, especially for the english language which is so alive and ever changing. so as you move forward with your language learning make sure you enjoy every moment of your journey.

finally i would like to take this opportunity to wish all the contestants the best of luck and great success in your future.

its terrific to see you dress formally and well prepared for the speech, and your poster is well done

as well.

however, you need to make more eye contact with the audience and better speak with various tones and clear pronunciation. i have to say you are a bit stiff without proper body language, which is no good for impressing the audience and the jury. moreover, i really hope you can put more passion into the speech and try to eich it with more facial expression, then surely your speech would be fabulous.

your grammar is ok. its worth mentioning that a boy gave a fantastic speech with an impressive beginning, furthermore, he was fairly humorous and enthusiastic throughout the speech, and he made good eye contact with the audience and used appropriate body language in the speech.

评委总结发言(表达感谢时用):good afternoon, excellent contestants,it?s my great pleasure to be here as a judge for this english speech competition. i think all contestants did a great job today, and i?d like to show my thanks to everyone who has contributed to organize the competition and has helped to make it a success. so let?s give a big round of applause to all of them. finally i would like to take this opportunity to wish all the contestants the best of luck and great success in your future.

对选手整体水平的肯定:i have been really enjoying this contest thoroughly, especially because all the contestants have approached the topic from different perspectives. all speeches have been well researched, with good thoughts as well as interesting ideas. i am very pleased to see that most of you delivered your speech with good pronunciation, clear articulation, with good eye contact and a proper manner. on

top of all this you all have also demonstrated your remarkable analytical abilities. the importance of today goes beyond the competition itself. i always like to say that ”life is a journey”. language learning is a life long experience and we never finish learning, especially for the english language which is so alive and ever changing. so as you move forward with your language learning make sure you enjoy every moment of your journey.

面对标新立异选手:you really have been very creative in trying to clear out your point. but this time, it was very clearly stated what would be required of you in the speech. therefore, it is very important to understand what is required of you and what is demanded of you in a competition.

面对跑题选手(或主题不明确选手)in today?s competition, i think you are a little too hasty in your preparation for the speech. for instance, as your topic is “a word that changes the world” ,you ?d better show your point out straightly. otherwise how could you grab the audiences? attention to your speech. so next time, you just read carefully about the instructions before you start making a speech. and try to understand every word clearly and correctly.

对不能及时切入主题的选手: i think the basic rules of communication are universal, and apply across languages and cultures. say what you mean, and say it in as clear, direct, and simple a manner as possible. and when you are talking or writing to someone from a different country, don?t be afraid to say the obvious thing first.

面对发音不好的选手:i have to mention in this competition that you still need to improve your pronunciatione specially rhythm and sentence stress.you need to improve your vowels. it is still very important. i think that?s all i want to say. thank you very much for your speech.

对表现好的选手i am very much impressed by the speech you have made. to compare with the speech of others, you really did a great job. i feel good about this. first of all, in your prepared speech, you are more to the point and your english is more natural. secondly, your point is very impressive. and you provide a lot of examples to support your speech.

对即兴演讲的评论:talking about your impromptu speech, i think you are quite sensitive to answer questions.your answer is quite logical and i like it.

you give us a fantastic speech with an impressive beginning, ending or the free talk. furthermore, you are enthusiastic throughout the speech. you made good eye contact with the audience and used appropriate body language in the

speech. .you made your speech more wonderful and more perfect with your body language. you looked cool!

适时对选手提出的建议:we all know a language is a means and the purpose is communication. what really matters is the courage to come and participate in the contest. i should learn from all of you. however, there are still some problems and much room for improvement. i am going to put forward some suggestions on how to do better in the future.

have you thought about this question: when you prepare a speech, there is something more important than language. what is it? it is idea. ideas come before the language. if you don?t know what to say, if you have no ideas, what is the use

of the language? so, you must think, and think again and decide what you want to say and then organize your ideas. one point i want to emphasize is that you should have your own approach, your own original ideas. if you only borrow things from others or copy things from some ready materials or textbooks, your speech is bound to fail. in this contest we hear some expressions again and again. then, we know you have been borrowing things from the same source. to quote from one of the topics for impromptu speech: “imagination is more important than knowledge.” this is a quotation from einstein. if we want the world to move forward, we need imagination, and we need creativity.

对即兴演讲的建议:when you prepare your impromptu speech, the most important thing is to be clear about the topic you

have chosen. if you miss the point, however fluent and expressive you are, you get a poor mark. for example, there is a topic: to err is human; to forgive is divine. when you choose this topic, you should know it means everybody makes mistakes, but if you are able to forgive other people?s

mistakes, then you are a better being. the emphasis is the second half. if you only talk about how to do your best to correct your mistakes, you miss the point. i feel this part is the most difficult part of the contest. you have to be quick for you don?t have much time to prepare; you have to be knowledgeable for you must understand the meaning of the topic properly.

对选手提出更高要求:so, you must have realized the contest has become more demanding,. you need to have something more creative. and next year, you would be expected to be at a new and higher stage.

there are several aspects of language and speaking that i would like to focus on today for considerations to allow you to improve moving forward.

first, the area of pronunciation and delivery. some of you, especially when you are nervous, should focus more on

diction and pronunciation. specifically, try not to swallow your articles like a and the or little connectors like of take a breath, take your time. and let each word be sounded. similarly, make sure you sound final consonants, especially the -ed in your past tenses. this is one of the things that chinese, even the good ones, the really good ones, when you start speaking quickly and passionately, forget. so, pay a lot of attention and be conscious that thats something that you may know that the grammars, grammatical and structural rules and not sound

that final consonant or you may be a little fuzzy on what the past tenses, but that some- thing that makes a big difference in a competition,

finally, in the area of pronunciation for all you students, not just the contestants here today, please, the word the, th-: put your tongue between your teeth. its not da, its the; its not der. its their; its not utter. its other. you can do this, you can do this, practice on the way to class, practice in the shower, practice wherever but dont say da, its the.

second category of feedback is i want to talk very briefly

about lexicon and vocabulary. as i mentioned, i felt that your use of lexicon in todays presentation was quite sophisticated and showed a lot of preparation. most of you may have noticed

that in the contemporaneous, spontaneous remarks and questions, the level of vocabulary came down a notch or two. thats very natural: some- thing that we all have to work on. but there were a couple of i think. theres three examples that id like to share with you to take home to work on. number one, since the topic was ecology, when you talk about living in harmony with da za ren, is it the nature or nature? nature! is not the nature! the nature is shena shenma dongxi de xingzhi, so, that was like one of those errors that. umm, came up because of the theme of the speech, but thats something you can remember right now, live in harmony with...nature. second, some small things that i noted, some of you messed up emphasized with emphasis---its a common mistake. and one of the contestants

was talking about how important it was to be aware of the environment and that we should generate awareness of environment to help us think of ways to improve it, and she, i think it was she, said we should get a consensus of the environment, i think she probably meant sense.get a sense of the environment as an awareness. so, little things like that. be careful semantically. if you reach the upper levels of language, its very easy to choose a wrong word and i guess my advice for you would be, when in doubt, check a dictionary for nuance and proper usage. because when youre in the lower levels youre not using those fancy words. but when you get up in the upper levels, like today, theyre very important.

finally, my last category of feedback for you is in the area of discourse and organization. this is very important in speaking contests, its very important when youre translating at the upper levels, and its important in adult life when youre working in the world of work where youre no longer talking simply about yourself and your family, but other things, issues. todays contestants demonstrated a wide variety of rhetorical styles in their prepared speeches. many of the candidates showed a sophisticated use of linguistic register, and register is, as you know. using language that is appropriate for a specific purpose for a specific social context. the reason l mention register is that for learners of english as a second language, the higher the register, the more difficult it is to speak accurately, coherently, and persuasively. right? so,

today, one of the contestants made a very insightful remark and said, i quote, the higher level of english i speak, the more mistakes i make. remember that? actually. what she meant by this was that she was having trouble communicating sophisticated ideas and arguments in english without making errors in grammar or usage. university students learning english can improve their ability to speak naturally in high registers and high level of discourse and can sustain a high level of discourse by doing a few things and these are the three pieces of advice i will leave for you before i conclude my remarks. so, this is advice teachers and students for how to build that competency and high level of discourse.

number one: read texts that represent a high level of discourse. soak up that language. but, remember that written text has a discourse that is separate from spoken

discourse. some of you were speaking today in very. kind of written-prose language, and you may not want to do that in the future.

number two, piece of advice: make a tape recording of yourself talking about abstract topics or complex topics and then go back and listen to it and listen to how it sounds: if its cohesive and coherent? are there errors? then go back, practice again, and do it a second time like editing a written text but, in fact, its a spoken text. you will hear what youre doing that could be improved, even you, and of course if you have teachers, thats even better, but you, yourself will hear.

in conclusion, i would like to quote one of our question masters, who said today that, life is a journey, not the arrival. that you focus on the journey not the arrival. language learning is lifelong. lifelong. so, as you move forward, language learning enjoy the journey.

评委总结发言(表达感谢时用):good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, excellent contestants, its really a greathonorandpleasure to be here as a judge for this english feast of speech competition. i think all contestants did a great job today, and i?d like to express my thanks to everyone who has made a great contribution to organizing the competition and has made it a fantastic success. so let?s give a big round of applause to all of them. i have been really enjoying this contest thoroughly, especially because all the contestants

have approached the topic from different perspectives. all speeches have been well researched, with good thoughts as well as interesting ideas. i am very pleased to see that most of you delivered your speech with good pronunciation, clear articulation, with good eye contact and a proper manner. finally i would like to take this opportunity to offer you some little tips about public english speech competition. first, the area of pronunciation and delivery. some of you, especially when you are nervous, should focus more on diction and pronunciation. specifically, try not to swallow your articles like a and the or little connectors like of take a breath, take your time. and let each word be sounded. similarly, make sure you sound final consonants, especially the -ed in your past tenses. this is one of the things that chinese, even the good ones, the really good ones, when you start speaking quickly and passionately, forget. so, what i here want to suggest to those contestants, when you preparing your speech, whatever the prepared speech and the impromptu speech, do not just focus on the whole picture of your work, instead pay a attention to the small details, as well as the intonation.

on top of that, i would like to speak with those who always get somewhat a little bit nervous once they stand on the stage to deliver a public speech.speaking of this, i would like to share with you a little bit about myself. when i was at my high school and i often blushed on my face when i stand even in the front our class, let alone the city competition later on. and one of my foreign teachers give my some tips. that?s what i want to share with you right now. when you feel nervous, especially before get on the stage, take a deep breath and tell yourself in your heart that i am the best in the whole universe. then, by the time you speak, what you should bear in mind is that

don?t ever get direct contact with same part area of audience all the time. remember you are here to serve the whole listeners with your point of view, so change your eyesight to different audience.

i always like to say that ”life

is a journey”. language learning is a life long experience and we never finish learning,

especially for the english language which is so alive and ever changing. so as you move forward with your language learning make sure you enjoy every moment of your journey.面对标新立异选手:you really have been very creative in trying to clear out your point. but this time, it was very clearly stated what would be required of you in the speech. therefore, it is very important to understand what is required of you and what is demanded of you in a competition.

They were escaping blazing forest fires of epic proportions. It was the largest evacuation in Saskatchewan history. Thousands of people were on the move, all of them in uncertain circumstances, not knowinghow quickly they would return home. For a few young women, these circumstances had an added dimension of uncertainty. Theywere in the late stages of pregnancy. These young women were living as displaced persons far from home, without the supplies theyhad gathered for their new baby. Thankfully, for all concerned, healthy babies were delivered in hospitals close by with medicalstaff to give assistance. We are privileged to live in a province where people come together. That can be difficult whenstress levels are high. And so I salute the evacuees, and the firefighters, and the troops, and the Red Cross, and thelocal officials, the mayors and chiefs. Those who shared money, food and supplies, those who prayed for an ending to this situation. All rose to the occasion. Two thousand years ago, a public official named Caesar Augustus issued a decree that all peopleneeded to be accounted for. It affected the entire Roman world. Everyone needed to beregistered.

还有一句话,不仅对想对我自己说,也想对每一个在努力的人说:the life we want, there is noshortcut.

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen! A gourd is used to hold liquids. However, Zhuangzi has taught us a good lesson that a gourd can be used to make a float, floating over the river and the lake. It’s clear to see a different mindset in him, which is the topic I’m going to focus on today: Success or Failure, Your Mindset Matters. Ladies and gentlemen, have you ever considered the true relationship between success and failure? What is success? How do you define failure? Most of time, participation is the essence. That’s why we say the process is more important than the result. There are about 30 contestants this morning in this competition. If the first prize winners are the only successful ones here, this competition will probably lose its meaning. When I began preparing for this English speaking contest, I was troubled by my speech writing. My coach wasn’t satisfied with them, because either my ideas were not typical or new just as Huizi was frustrated by a large kind of gourd. The chance to be chosen in this competition is one of thousands. How could I afford to lose? I was sleepless, couldn’t enjoy my m eals, and was nearly collapsed to come up with any good idea. I turned to my teacher, and he said your speech should be very well written to impress the judges and the audience. With so ordinary ideas and points, you cannot even convince me. It seems “winning” is the only word in my teacher’s dictionary. Failure does not have a place there.I can’t imagine wh at if I lose. I couldn’t get out until I read one of my teacher’s blogs. It goes like this: Failure doesn’t mean you are a “failure”, it means you haven’t succeeded yet. Failure doesn’t mean you have accomplished nothing, it mean s you have learned something. Failure doesn’t mean you don’t have it, it means you have to try something in a different way. My problem solved, this verse has just opened my mind. The competition is not just about winning and losing. Actually the time I spent on preparing my speech has developed my creative thinking and critical mind. Suddenly, I felt enlightened and smartened,so to win a prize or notno longer bothers me, because I know I’m a winner already. Thank you!

Hello again, ladies and gentlemen! Nowadays, we live in a technology-driven society. On the one hand, technology helps us a lot. Like today, our contest uses all kinds of modern technology to help facilitate the process. On the other hand, however, we human beings have the tendency to be addicted to modern technology. No one knows this better than those “hi-tech” parents. And they are actually sending their children to “non-hi–tech” schools. I think the main concerns behind this decision are the following t wo: First, “hi-tech” parents want their children to return to the real human world; and second, they want their children to return to nature. For the first concern: return to the real human world. Well, when the little boy was so focused on the computer screen, he is actually isolated from the real human world around him. But if we take the computer away from him and let him interact with his peers and play with his peers, he can actually learn how to gain emotional control of his own emotion, and he can have a better understanding of other people’s needs and rights. And that is what we called “EQ”, which is a very important element if you want success in life. For children to get back to real world, there is another element involved: that is nature. Well, it is true that a child can appreciate a picture of rose from a computer screen, but he will not be able to touch its petal; he will not be able to smell its fragrance. Without a computer, we actually give the child a chance to go back to nature. He can feel the coldness of the running water; he can hear the birds sing; he can hold a flake of snow in the palm of his little hands. Nature is not only the source of joy, it is, actually, more importantly, the source of imagination and inspiration for creativity. For example, the invention of airplane, it’s actually the result of observation of birds in nature. In conclusion, if I were one of those “hi-tech” parents, I will make the same choice for my child, because after all, modern technology is just a tool. It is our human mind that is responsible for all the creation and all the imagination that we have in this world. Well, Shakespeare never knew how to use a computer in his entire life, but he still wrote the beautiful plays in our world;
