第二部分:阅读理解(共15小题,每题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

Five years ago, David Smith wore an expensive suit to work every day. “I was a clothes addict,” he jokes. “I used to carry a fresh suit to work with me ,so I could change if my clothes got wrinkled.” Today David wears casual clothes, pants and sports shirt to the office. He hardly ever wears a necktie. “I’m working harder than ever,” David says, “and I need to feel comfortable.”

More and more companies are allowing their office workers to wear casual clothes to work in the United States. The change from formal to casual office wear has been gradual. In the early 1990s, many companies allowed their employees to wear casual clothes on Friday (but only on Friday). This became known as “dress-down Friday” of “casual Friday”. “What started out as an extra one-day-a-week benefit for employees has really become an everyday thing.” said business consultant Maisly Jones.

Why have so many companies started allowing their employees to wear casual clothes? One reason is that it’s easier for a company to attract n ew employees if it has a casual dress code. “A lot of young people don’t want to dress up for work,” says the owner of a software company, “so it’s hard to hire people if you have a conservative dress code.” Another reason is that people seem happier and more productive when they are wearing comfortable clothes. In a study conducted by Levi Strauss and Company, 85 percent of employers said that they believe that casual dress improves employee morale. Only 4 percent of employers said that casual dress has a negative impact on productivity. Supporters of casual office wear also argue that a casual dress code helps them save money. “Suits are expensive, if you have to wear one every day,” one person said. “For the same amount of money, you can buy a lot more ca sual clothes.”

36. David Smith refers to himself as having been “a clothes addict,” because _______.

A. he often wore pants and a sports shirt

B. he couldn’t stand a clean appearance

C. he wanted his clothes to look neat all the time

D. he didn't want to spend much money on clothes

37. David Smith wears casual clothes now, because _______.

A. they make him feel at ease when working

B. he cannot afford to buy expensive clothes

C. he looks handsome in casual clothes

D. he no longer works for any company

38. According to this passage, which of the following statements is true?

A. Company workers started to dress down about twenty years ago.

B. Dress-down has become an everyday phenomenon since the early 1990s.

C. “Dress-down Friday” was first given as a fav or from employers.

D. Many workers want to wear casual clothes to impress people.

B

Step into the trendiest clothes stores in Britain or the US and you may be surprised by what’s hanging from the rail. There’ll be coats with holes in the pockets and shoes with marks at the heel- lasting signs of the previous owners. Yes, these clothes are second-hand. But if you’re young and fashionable, you certainly won’t consider them as second-rate.

A couple of years ago, before the financial decline hit the Western world, shopping at second-hand clothing markets had a shame attached to it. It’s pretty safe to say that, back then, if you could afford to shop elsewhere, you would. But today, with young people lack of cash, second-hand clothing has made a comeback.

“I don’t see shopping in second-hand shops as a worse choice at all,”said 24-year-old Fran Hall, a recent graduate of King’s College London. “You can find some great things in there and people are always impressed if they like something you’re wearing and you tell them it’s from a second-hand shop,” Fran continued. “I guess people just think about what a great bargain you’ve got.”

It’s not only bargain basement fashion stores that have become popular. In the UK’s Poundland shops, which store everything from make-up to dog biscuits, business is developing rapidly. Each shop stores approximately 3,000 products, including 800 big-name brands, and most importantly, everything is priced at£1or less.

How do the shops make money if they sell at such low prices? Producers, it seems, are willing to bring down prices in return for large purchases. Of course, success is also down to the huge numbers of customers who rush into the stores. And surprisingly perhaps, the millions of shoppers that pass through Poundland come from all types of groups. Accordingly, the shops perform just as well in many rich areas as in poor neighborhoods.

39. Why do second-hand markets become popular in the Western world?

A. Because it is a pride nowadays.

B. Because it is against the fashion.

C. Because young people want to be pretty.

D. Because young people are short of money.

40. Which of the following is true of the old pieces of clothing?

A. All of them have been worn out.

B. All of them have their previous owners.

C. All of them are second-rate ones.

D. All of them belong to the neighborhoods.

41. A Poundland shop is a shop where ________.

A. you can buy anything for £1 or less

B. pounds of clothes are sold for £1 or less

C. people pay £1 or less for 3,000 products

D. 800 big-name brands cost only £1 or less

42. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.

A. most second-hand shops sell the best cloth

B. the financial decline has been over

C. people can hardly reject cheap things

D. it’s shameful to wear the old cloths

C

The past year wrapped up with interesting and unexpected events, but 2011 is likely to be just as fantastic. Newspapers, magazines and websites make predictions about all sorts of things. Some predictions are fun while others sound alarming. They may look reasonable, but the truth is that nobody knows exactly what will happen. Then, why do predictions still cast a strong spell on human beings?

The New York Times has explored the topic by letting 10 experts in various fields debate the question under the title Why Do We Need Prediction?

David Ropeik, an instructor at the Harvard Extension School, analyzed our tendency to predict the future. He believes that humans make predictions because it gives them a sense of control over their fate.He explained that uncertainty plays strongly on humans’ fears and that the absence of knowledge gives us no protection from potential risks. To make the point clearer, Ropeik asked readers to imagine closing their eyes when driving fast on a highway and to see how scary that was.

Ray Kurzweil, an inventor, suggested that there are rules which we must observe to predict trends. He explained in the debate, “The law of accelerating returns, as I call it, tells us that any area of information technology will grow largely in power while becoming ever smaller in size.” He noted that a computer which once occupied a space as big as a building during his school years is now only pocket-sized.

Sherry Turkle, an author, reminded us in the debate that predictions are about having hopes, even though they may get stuck. “The prediction is not to confirm an assumption about the future, but to express a hope about what we might like the future to be”,Turkle said.

43. According to David Ropeik, what makes people eager to predict the future?

A. The protection from potential risks.

B. The rapid development of highway.

C. The sense of control over their fate.

D. The knowledge of what will happen.

44. The writer believes that the future is _________.

A. ridiculous

B. alarming

C. reasonable

D. unpredictable

45. Which of the following can best explain the phrase underlined in the 1st paragraph?

A. Attract.

B. Help.

C. Discourage.

D. Ignore.

46. Whose idea about the future might be mentioned in the following paragraph?

A. An instructor’s.

B. An engineer’s.

C. An inventor’s.

D. An author’s.

D

Many of us mistakenly believe that it's wrong to think we have any good qualities. We may spend a lot of time blaming ourselves for our negative qualities, thinking that self criticism is the key to improving our performance. However, a constant focus on our supposed shortcomings can stop our efforts to make friends with other people. How can we believe that others could like us if we believe our inner being is flawed(有缺陷)?

If someone seems to dislike you, the reason for that dislike might have little or nothing to do with you. The person who doesn't like you might be fearful, or shallow, or busy or shy. Perhaps you and that person are simply a mismatch for each other at this particular time. Don't take yourself out of the game by deciding that your flaws are bigger than your good qualities. In fact, some of the very qualities you consider to be flaws may be irresistible to someone else. For all the factors that might cause one person to reject you, there are at least as many factors that will work in your favor with someone else.

You might be thirty pounds over your ideal weight, but you may have a wonderful laugh and a real enthusiasm for life. There are many people who don’t mind your extra pounds. You may drive a shabby car, but you might be a great dancer and a loyal friend. There are people out there looking for loyalty, or fun, or sweetness, or wisdom, and the package it comes in is not important. If you are worried that you are not beautiful enough to attract friends, keep in mind that not everyone is looking for physical beauty in their friends. You can decide to feel inferior(自卑)because you don't have much money and you don't drive a nice car. You can believe that this is the reason that you don't have many friends in your life. On the other hand, if you are very wealthy you may be suspicious that everyone is after your money and that nobody really likes you as a person.

The point is that you can focus on just about anything and believe it's the reason you do not have friends and cannot make any.

47 According to the author _________ plays an important role in making friends.

A. admitting your shortcomings

B. self criticism

C. modesty

D. confidence

48. If you are not liked by a person, ________ .

A. you should find the reason in yourself

B. you’d better talk with the person face to face

C. you may not be the one to be blamed

D. you and that person misunderstand each other

49. We can learn from the third paragraph that ___________ .

A. your good qualities may turn out to be your flaws

B. your weakness may also be your strengths in some way

C. your negative qualities cause a person to reject you

D. you’ll have few friends if your flaws are bigger than your good qualities

50. Which of the following is true according to the author?

A. It is important to lose weight.

B. It is easier for a wealthy person to make friends.

C. Inner qualities are more important than physical appearance.

D. If you are not beautiful enough, try to improve your physical beauty.

第Ⅱ卷(非选择题共35分)

第三部分任务型读写(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,根据所读内容在表格中的空白处填入恰当的单词。

注意:每个空格只填一个单词。

Parenting isn’t easy, and it’s natural for a parent to get angry and frustrated sometimes. In your anger, some hurtful words may slip out of your mouth, which can not only leave your child feeling hurt, but also make him feel frightened and affect his self-respect negatively. The trick here is to remain calm so that you won’t end up saying something you might regret later.

For example, sometimes you shout at your child and threaten him by saying “If you do that one more time, you won’t get dinner”. However, is it possible to do so? No. Threats are impractical to perform. This can only raise questions on your credibility, and the next time you threaten your child, he won’t take you seriously. Thus, instead of threatening your child, give him a choice, and meanwhile tell him what the consequences will be if he does behave badly.

To motivate your child to work harder or do better, you often say, “I know you could do better.” Actually, this can make him feel you are not satisfied with his efforts, and discourage him. Instead, you should tell your child exactly what you expect of him. Don’t forget to appreciate his efforts, if he is really going that extra mile to improve his performance. You can also find out the areas where he needs improvement, and help him accordingly to reach his goals.

In a word, you should learn to control your emotions, if you really want to avoid saying hurtful things to your child. And if you think you are losing control over your emotions and have said something hurtful, leave the argument and tell your child you’ll discuss it later. This will help avoid saying other things you don’t want to.

One possible version,

It is reported that Chinese primary and middle school students can hopefully enjoy spring and autumn holidays in the near future. Many of them will choose to go for a short trip to get refreshed. First and foremost, I would recommend riding bicycle. A bicycle is far cheaper than other major means of transportation. When you ride with your family or friends, you can enjoy more flexibility and freedom. What’s more, riding among bicyclists is not only a sort of unusual enjoyment but also an environmentally friendly experience.

If you go a little bit farther, I would like you to choose to use public transportation, like taking a bus. Although less comfortable, the bus is cheaper and more convenient. Besides, you don’t have to take the trouble of caring for it. The only disadvantage is that it might take you a few moments to wait in line sometimes.
