第三部分阅读理解 ( 每小题2分,满分24分)

A

Traffic jam and cities, it seems, go hand in hand. Everyone complains about being stuck in traffic; but, like the weather, no one seems to do anything about it. In particular, traffic engineers, transportation planners, and public officials responsible for transportation systems in large cities are frequently criticized for failing to solve traffic jam

But is traffic jam a sign of failure? Long queues at restaurants or theater box offices are seen as signs of success. Should transportation systems be viewed any differently? I think we should recognize that traffic jam is an

unpreventable by-product of successful cities, and view the “traffic problem” in a different light.

Cities exist because they promote social interactions and economic transactions.

Traffic jam occurs where there are lots of people but limited spaces. Culturally and economically successful cities have the worst traffic problems, while decaying cities don’t have much traffic. New York and Los Angeles are America’s most crowded cities. But if you want access to major brokerage houses (经纪行), you will find them easier to reach in crowded New York than in any other large cities. And if your firm needs access to post-production film editors or satellite-guidance engineers, you will reach them more quickly through the crowded freeways of LA than through less crowded roads elsewhere.

Despite traffic jam, a larger number and wider variety of social interactions and economic transactions can be made perfect in large, crowded cities than elsewhere. Seen in this sight, traffic jam is an unfortunate consequence of prosperity, not a cause of economic decline and urban decay.

So while we can consider traffic jam as increasing costs on the areas of big cities, the costs of inaccessibility (交通不便) in uncrowded places are almost certainly greater.

There is no doubt that traffic jam brings the terrible economic and environmental damage in places like Bangkok, Jakarta, and Lagos. But mobility is far higher and traffic jam levels are far lower here in the US, even in our most crowded cities. That’s why, for now, we don’t see people and capital streaming out of San Francisco and Chicago, heading for cities like California, and Illinois.

56. We can conclude from the first paragraph that_______.

A. traffic jam and weather are the two factors preventing the development of the big city

B. traffic jam seems to be very difficult to deal with

C. if traffic engineers try their best, traffic jam can be solved

D. public officials are always criticized for misusing their power

57. According to the passage, what’s the author’s opinion towards traffic jam?

A. Traffic jam is unavoidable in any cities.

B. Traffic jam is both a sign of failure and a sign of success.

C. Traffic jam is one of the consequences of successful cities.

D. Traffic jam is a cause of economic decline.

58. By saying “decaying” (in Para. 4), the writer probably means_______.

A. declining

B. developing

C. rich and successful

D. strong and healthy

59. According to this article, which statement about “New York” and“Los Angeles” is true?

A. The traffic jam in the two cities has been worsened.

B. New York and Los Angeles are the least successful cities in the US.

C. It is easier to reach major brokerage houses in the two cities than in other cities.

D. D espite the traffic jam in LA, you’ll find a satellite-guidance engineer more quickly there.

The future of agriculture must achieve several goals at the same time.

First, it now appears that we will have to double world food production in the next 40 years due to population growth, increasing meat consumption and pressure from biofuels (生物燃料). We will also have to reduce the environmental impacts from our farming practices, which have caused widespread damage to soils, ecosystems, waters and even the atmosphere. In fact, agriculture’s impacts are as bad as climate change as an environmental concern. Besides, we will have to improve food security for the world’s poor. While the Green Revolution of the 1960s made it possible to feed hundreds of millions more people than in earlier eras, the number of the under-nourished in the world has started to rise again. Finally, we will have to increase the recovering ability of agriculture from shocks.Today, our high-efficiency, globalized world has many benefits, but it is vulnerable (易受伤的) to destruction, whether from droughts, diseases or sudden price rises. We must start building better food systems to better keep us away from future shocks.Currently, there are two models of agriculture: local and organic agriculture vs. globalized and industrialized agriculture. Each has been strongly supported and severely criticized, but neither of these models, standing alone, can fully meet our needs.

Organic agriculture teaches us important lessons about soils, nutrition and pest management.Unfortunately, organic food provides less than 1% of the world’s calories, mostly to the wealthy. It is hard to imagine organic farming developing to feed 9 billion. Globalized and industrialized agriculture has benefits of high output and low labor demands.Without it, billions of people would have starved. However, it has come with enormous environmental and social costs, which cannot be sustained.

Rather than voting for just one solution, we need a third way to solve the crisis.Let’s ta ke ideas from both sides, creating new, hybrid solutions that increase production, save resources and build a more sustainable agriculture. There are many promising avenues to pursue. A new “third way” for agriculture is not only possible but also necessary. Our problems are huge, and they will require everyone at the table, working together toward solutions.

60. How many goals of agriculture are mentioned in the passage?

A. Three

B. Four

C. Five

D. Six

61. Which is true according to the passage?

A. Organic agriculture can feed most people in the world now.

B. Industrialized agriculture does no harm to our environment.

C. Modern farming is criticized while organic farming is not.

D. The future agriculture can’t only depend on organic agriculture.

62. We can learn from the passage that _______.

A. everyone can afford to enjoy organic food at will

B. we will vote to decide which farming system to take

C. the writer is quite optimistic about future agriculture

D. only experts can find a better agricultural solution

63. What’s the best title for the passage?

A. Organic Agriculture Vs Industrialized Agriculture.

B. The Goals of Future Agriculture and Its Way Out.

C. A Third Possible and Necessary Way for Agriculture.

D. Modern Globalized and Industrialized Agriculture.

“Mister D’Arcy is not a policeman. He is, however, very wise. He knew the police would search his apartment. He also knew how police think. So, he did not hide the letter where he knew they would look for it.

“Do you remember how Germont laughed when I said the mystery was difficult for him to solve because it was so simple?”

Dupin filled his pipe with tobacco and lit it. “Well, the more I thought about it, the more I realized the police could not find the letter because D’Arcy had not hidden it at all.

“So I went to visit D’Arcy in his apartment. I took a pair of dark green eyeglasses with me. I explained to him that I was having trouble with my eyes and needed to wear the dark glasses at all times. He believed me. The glasses permitted me to look around the apartment while I seemed only to be talking to him.

“I paid special attention to a large desk where there were a lot of papers and books. However, I saw nothing suspicious there. After a few minutes, however, I noticed a small shelf over the fireplace. A few postcards and a letter were lying on the shelf. The letter looked very old and dirty.

“As soon as I saw this letter, I decided it must be the one I was looking for. It must be, even though it was completely different from the one Germont had described.

“This letter had a large green stamp on it. The address was written in small letters in blue ink. I memorized every detail of the letter while I talked to D’Arcy. Then when he was not looking, I dropped one of my gloves on the floor under my chair.

“The next morning, I stopped at his apartment to look for my glove. While we were talking, we heard people shouting in the street. D’Arcy went to the window and looked out. Quickly, I stepped to the shelf and put the letter in my pocket. Then I replaced it with a letter that looked exactly like it, which I had made it the night before.

“The trouble in the street was caused by a man who had almost been run over by a horse and carriage. He was not hurt. And soon the crowd of people went away. When it was over, D’Arcy came away from the window. I said goodbye and left.

“The man who almost had an accident was one of my servants(雇员). I had paid him to create the incident.”

Dupin stopped talking to light his pipe. I did not understand. “But, Dupin,”

I said, “why did you go to the trouble of replacing the letter? Why not just take it and leave?”

Dupin smiled. “D’Arcy is a dangerous man,” he said. “And he has many loyal servants. If I had taken the letter, I might never have left his apartment alive.”

64.What is Dupin probably?

A. An actor.

B. A professor.

C. An official.

D. A detective.

65. Which of he following about Dupin’s dropping one of his gloves is NOT true?

A. He dropped it intentionally.

B. He dropped it carelessly.

C. He dropped it in order to drop in on D’Arcy again.

D. He dropped it to make an excuse.

66. According to the text, we can infer____________________.

A. the letter Dupin took away was exactly the one he wanted.

B. the incident in the street was directed by Dupin.

C. Mr. D’Arcy and Dupin were good friends.

D. Dupin should have taken the letter away directly.

67. Which would be the best title for the text?

A. The stolen letter

B. An unexpected accident

C. A dangerous man

D. The frightening apartment

第II卷(非选择题共41分)

第四部分:任务型阅读(共l0小题;每小题l分,满分l0分)注意:每个空格只填l个单词。请将答案写在答卷纸上相应题号的横线上。

While many Americans hope the new stimulus(刺激) package will provide some relief in the year ahead, many who were recently laid off or are facing layoffs are looking for a more immediate solution, such as a new job. But, according to Josh Klapow, clinical psychologist at the University of Alabama Birmingham School of Public Health, a clear mind is the first step to finding a new job.

“After a job loss, a person’s memory and concentration can be weakened. Within the first 24 hours of being laid off, the best thing to do is doing nothing,” said Klapow. “I encourage people to just cool it.”

According to Klapow, many people tend to over-think their situation, which may lead to anxiety, and difficult sleeping and concentrating. Instead of letting your thoughts race, Klapow suggests writing a list of tasks.

“Write down everything you think you may need to do, then make a list,” he said. “It gets your thoughts out of your head and onto a piece of paper.”

Once your mind is clear, and the list is in front of you, you can start from the top and do one thing at a time, he said.

Not having to prepare for work in the morning may no longer be an excuse to watch the morning hours tick away from under the covers.

Staying in bed allows anxiety and guilt to build up within oneself, he said. Getting a start to the day keeps away the negative thoughts associated with losing a job, and allows you to work on applying of other positions and getting things done.

Getting up early may not seem appealing if there isn’t much to do. Taking part in activities or taking on projects that would have previously cut into work hours is a good way to stay positive.

Activities can include exercising, volunteering, or attending career fairs. These can not only improve your emotional well-being, but also help you discover opportunities you may not have found if you stayed at home.

“We have the tendency to think of problems as permanent, but they always get

resolved in the end,” said Klapow. “The important thing is for a person not to go downhill and stay there.”

Laughter is the best medicine, as the saying goes. And although laughter may not bring a nation out of a recession(经济衰退), it can bring about a positive outlook. According to Klapow, laughing can improve your physiological(生理的) response to losing a job.

Good morning,everyone!

My topic today is “Do trust us --- a generation born in the 90s”. Most of us

are only-one child, who are spoiled by our parents. This causes people’s concern.

Some people think we care too much about ourselves and are unwilling to cooperate with others, which makes it hard for us to achieve success. In their mind, we are lacking in determination, and easy to give up in time of trouble. They are also concerned we like to follow all the comforts of modern life and are so eager to become famous.

As a generation born in the 90s, our parents expect too much of us. As a matter

of fact, we are living in an environment full of fiercer competition. We are faced with more problems in entering high schools and getting employed.

However, we have our own advantages despite some weaknesses. Firstly, we have

the courage to meet challenges and take risks, which helps realize our dreams. In addition, we are quick-minded and creative. We can do our work more efficiently. Yet,

we still need to learn more from those experienced. Please do trust us!

Thank you for your listening!
