NMET(I)2004C

When someone has deeply hurt you ,it can be extremely difficult to let go off your anger. But forgiveness is possible and it can be surprisingly helpful to your physical and mental health. Indeed , research has shown that people who forgive report more energy, better appetite and better sleep patterns.“People who forgive slow less anger and more hopefulness,”says Dr. Frederic Luskin, who wrote the book------FORGIVE FOR GOOD.“So it can help save on the wear and tear on our system and allow people to feel more energetic.”

So when someone has hurt you , calm yourself first. Take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature, someone you love. Don`t wait for an apology….

The text is mainly written to explain______.

A. how to keep yourself from being hurt

B. how to stay mentally healthy

C. how and when to remain calm

D. why and how to pardon others

分析全文共两段,第一段的主旨在第二句forgiveness is possible and it can be surprisingly helpful to your physical and mental health,第二段的主旨在第一句So when someone has hurt you ,calm yourself first。

decided to leave his graduation. He transferred to the University of Berlin and graduated with honors. Harvard Law School and, later, Boston College provided with an excellent legal background .He is presently a corporation lawyer in Miami, Florida.

What is the main idea of the passage?

A. How did Joshua Bingham become a lawyer?

B. Bingham is a diligent student.

C. Joshua Bingham received an excellent education.

D. A good lawyer needs good education.

American Thomas Schelling and Israeli-American Robert Aumann will share the 2005 Nobel Prize in economics. Both men have greatly influenced the way conflict and business negotiations are carried out.

The two men are being honored for their work in developing an economic idea. It is called game theory.

Game theory began as the study of decision-making in competitive situations, like games. John von Neumann and Oskar Morgenstern linked the theory of games with economic activities more than sixty years ago.

In the nineteen fifties, John Nash developed an idea known as the Nash equilibrium (平衡). The Nash equilibrium is the point where all sides in a competitive situation believe they have been given the best offer they will ever get. He proved this with mathematical methods.

Mr. Nash won the Nobel Prize in economics with two other men in 1994.

Mr. Schelling used the ideas of game theory to study real-life problems, such as the arms competition between the United States and the Soviet Union forty years ago. He was interested in what influenced negotiating groups. He showed how one side might decide to harm its interests for a short period of time to make gains over a longer period. Mr. Schelling also used game theory to show how people become divided by race. He found that divided societies can result even among persons mostly willing to live near people of another race.

Mr. Aumann developed game theory mathematically so that it can be useful for different areas of study. He showed that peaceful cooperation can provide good results for all competitors in a game over a long period. This is true even among competitors with a temporary conflict of interest. Mr. Aumann also considered how reasonable decisions are made among groups. He showed that knowing what competitors know is important to

decision-making.

The work of both men has influenced areas of study other than economics. International negotiators, military planners, business leaders and biologists use methods developed by Mr. Schelling and Mr. Aumann.

Mr. Schelling, an American, is a retired professor of the University of Maryland. Mr. Aumann is a citizen of both the United States and Israel. He is a retired professor of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

1. Mr. Schelling and Mr. Aumann share the 2005 Nobel Prize in economics for .

A. developing “game theory”

B. developing the Nash equilibrium

C. proving “game theory”

D. beginning the study of “game theory”

2. The underlined phrase “make gains”in the sixth paragraph probably refers to .

A. suffer loss

B. improve health

C. make money

D. make

a profit

3. According to Mr. Aumann, when we want to reach a reasonable decision

among groups, we .

A. don’t have to be informed what our competitors think

B. must have a good understanding of what our competitors know

C. need only think about how we can make the most of our own interests

D. needn’t peacefully cooperate with our competitors to make a profit

4. We can infer from the text that .

A. Mr. Aumann used “game theory”to study the arms competition between

the US and the Soviet Union.

B. Mr. Schelling and Mr. Aumann only explained the game theory mathematically

C. most of the people are willing to live near their own competitors

according to Mr. Schelling

D. the game theory developed by both men is very valuable to more than economics

Like many of my generation, I have a weakness for hero worship. At some point, however, we all begin to question our heroes and our need for them. This leads us to ask: What is a hero?

Despite immense differences in cultures, heroes around the world generally share a number of characteristics that instruct and inspire people.

A hero does something worth talking about. A hero has a story of adventure to tell and a community who will listen. But a hero goes beyond

mere fame.

Heroes serve powers or principles larger than themselves. Like high voltage transformers, heroes take the energy of higher powers and step it down so that it can be used by ordinary people.

The hero lives a life worthy of imitation. Those who imitate a genuine hero experience life with new depth, enthusiasm, and meaning. A sure test for what would be heroes is what or whom do they serve? What are they willing to live and die for? If the answer or evidence suggests they serve only their own fame, they may be famous persons but not heroes. Madonna and Michael Jackson are famous, but who would claim that their fans find life richer?

Heroes are catalysts(催化剂) for change. They have a vision from the mountain top. They have the skill and the charm to move the masses. They create new possibilities. Without Gandhi, India might still be part of the British Empire. Without Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr., we might still have segregated (隔离的) buses, restaurants, and parks. It may be possible for large scale change to occur without leaders with magnetic personalities, but the pace of change would be slow, the vision uncertain, and the committee meetings endless.

5. Although heroes may come from different cultures, they _____________________.

A. generally process certain inspiring characteristics

B. probably share some weaknesses of ordinary people

C. are often influenced by previous generations

D. all unknowingly attract a large number of fans

6.Gandhi and Martin Luther King are typical examples of outstanding leaders who ___________ .

A. are good at demonstrating their charming characters

B. can move the masses with their forceful speeches

C. are capable of meeting all challenges and hardships

D. can provide an answer to the problems of their people

7.The author concludes that historical changes would ________ .

A. be delayed without leaders with inspiring personal qualities

B. not happen without heroes making the necessary sacrifices

C. take place if there were heroes to lead the people

D. produce leaders with attractive personalities

One would have to be a fool to overlook the importance of using positive thinking for you rather than allowing negative thinking to work against you. In recent years, research in psychopharmacology (精神药理学) has proved what many people have known over the centuries: a positive attitude is good for you, good for your health, good for your wealth, good for everything. Researchers found that a positive attitude produces a

specific chemical reaction which makes people feel better, while negative thinking results

in a decline of hormone (荷尔蒙) and shuts down the immune (免疫的) system. This leads to illness and depression. Positive thoughts will make you feel better. Even if you must begin by literally forcing yourself to be positive (faking it, so to speak), it will become contagious (会传播的) and the positive thoughts will generate nice little chemicals and good feelings which will reinforce the positive thoughts.

For example, if you force yourself to smile or laugh, even when you don't feel like smiling or laughing, if you keep at it for a few minutes, you will soon feel like it. Feelings can generate thoughts, but thoughts can also generate feelings. Control your thoughts and you can control your feelings. Positive thinking is important in all aspects of our lives. There is probably no single factor more important in determining your success in achieving your career objectives than your own attitude.

It's often been said that in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king. And in the office of militant (好战) negativism, the positive workers shine like gold. You cannot control external events, but you can learn to control your reaction to those events and thereby have a positive attitude and be happy. This vital key to success is totally within your control. Use it.

8. We can infer from the passage that .

A. positive thinking can cure you of your diseases

B. positive thinking can easily be generated by anyone

C. a decline of hormone may cause you to be depressed

D. a specific chemical reaction is the cause of negative thinking

9. According to the passage, which of the following is true?

A. Feeling and thoughts can generate each other.

B. It's easier to control thoughts than to control feelings.

C. Your success depends wholly on your attitude.

D. Keeping smiling will surely make you successful.

10. Just like a one-eyed man in the land of the blind, you should .

A. take positive attitude in the office of militant negativism

B. be king in your office

C. pay no attention to what is going on around you

D. control your feeling to what is happening to you

11. The best title to the passage is .

A.Thinking Benefits People

B. B. Why Should People Think

C.Positive Thinking and Negative Thinking

D.Thinking: The Vital Way

SOUTHPORT, ENGLAND—A British teaching union famous for strange ideas has supported proposal to employ dogs as classroom assistants.

At the annual conference of the Professional Association of teachers in Southport, northwest of England, one person suggested properly trained dogs be able to keep order in primary schools. They can round up lost children and protect those who experience unfortunate “accidents”. Wendy Dyble, a Sheetland Islands woman who teaches children up to age seven, made it clear to her fellow friends that she was not “barking mad”. They obviously believed her, supporting her idea by 16 votes to 13, with a total of 63 abstentions.

he said big dogs could help round up children, keep them in line, lick up the milk they spill on the floor and provide the extra eyes that a teacher needs to keep order. “A big dog would also be helpful for breaking up fights and look for lost property, like gym shoes or dolls, ” Dyble said at the conference. “The dog will also be useful in sniffing out smells that children do not own up to,” she added. “It would be nice for the teacher not to have to go round sniffing each child to find the culprit.”

The idea was greeted by the Dog Defense League but less so by bigger

teaching unions. A spokesman for Education Secretary David Blunkett, who is blind, said his guide

dog was always popular with pupils when he visited schools. The Professional Association of Teachers, with around 35,000 members, is the smallest teaching union in Britain. It has an honour for occasional strange ideas.

Gene technology to benefit people

Among all the fast growing science and technology, the research of human genes, or biological engineering as people call it, is drawing more and more attention now. Sometimes it is a hot topic discussed by people.

The greatest thing that gene technology can do is to cure serious diseases that doctors at present can almost do nothing with, such as cancer and heart disease. Every year, millions of people are murdered by these two killers. And to date, doctors have not found an effective way to cure them. But if the gene technology is applied, not only these two diseases can be cured completely, bringing happiness and more living days to the patients, but also the great amount of money people spend on curing their diseases can be saved, therefore it benefits the economy as well. In

addition, human life span(寿命) can be prolonged.

Gene technology can help people to give birth to more healthy and clever children. Some families, with the English imperial family being

a good example, have hereditary(遗传的) diseases. This means their children will for sure have the family disease, which is a great trouble for these families. In the past, doctors could do nothing about hereditary diseases. But gene technology can solve this problem perfectly. The scientist just need to find the wrong gene and correct it, and a healthy child will be born.

Some people are worrying that the gene research can be used to manufacture human beings in large quantities. In the past few years, scientists have succeeded in cloning a sheep, therefore these people predict that human babies would soon be cloned. But I believe cloned babies will not come out in large quantities, for most couples in the world can have babies in very normal way. Of course, the governments must take care to control gene technology.

16. What does "these two killers" in the second paragraph refer to?

A. gene technology and another treatment of the two diseases.

B. The two murderers who killed the cloned baby

C. The two diseases of cancer and heart disease

D. Hereditary diseases and cancer

17. What's the main idea of the third paragraph?

A. How gene technology can be applied in the field of treating hereditary diseases.

B. Gene technology can be used to clone human babies.

C. Gene technology can help people to give birth of a baby.

D. Gene technology can help the English imperial family out

18.In what way gene technology can help to treat hereditary diseases?

A. Using gene technology, people with hereditary diseases can have more living days.

B. Using gene technology, scientist finds the wrong gene and corrects it.

C. Using gene technology, human babies can be cloned.

D. Doctors can cure cancer and heart disease with the help of gene technology.

19.What is the main purpose of writing this passage?

A. Expressing the writer's idea that gene technology will benefit people

B. Telling people the advantages of gene technology

C. Telling the readers that gene technology will not benefit people

D. Explaining that gene technology will also do harm to the humanity

Special Bridges Help Animals Cross the Road

—Reported by Sheila Carrick

Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side.

Most people know this joke. But recently, some people have been much more worried about how the grizzly bear (灰熊) and mountain lion can cross the road.

“Millions of animals die each year on U.S. roads,” the Federal Highway Administration reports. In fact, only about 80 ocelots, an endangered wild cat, exist in the U.S. today. The main reason? Roadkill.

“Ecopassages(生态通道)”may help animals cross the road without being hit by cars. They are paths both over and under roads. “These ecopassages can be extremely useful, so that wildlife can avoid road accidents,” said Jodi Hilty of the Wildlife Protection Society.

But do animals actually use the ecopassages? The answer is yes. Paul Beier of Northern Arizona University found foot marks left by mountain lions on an ecopassage that went under a highway. This showed that the lions used the passage.

Builders of ecopassages try to make them look like a natural part of an area by planting trees on and around them. Animals seem to be catching on. Animals as different as salamanders (火蜥蜴) and grizzly bears are using the bridges and underpasses.

The next time you visit a park or drive through an area with a lot of wildlife, look around. You might see an animal overpass!

20. The writer uses the example of “ocelots”to show that _______.

A. wild animals have become more dangerous

B. the driving conditions have improved greatly

C. the measure for protecting wildlife fails to work

D. an increasing number of animals are killed in road accidents

21. From the news story, we know an ecopassage is ________.

A.an underground path for cars

B. a fence built for the safety of the area

B. a bridge for animals to get over a river

D. a path for animals to cross the road

22. When the writer says that animals seem “to be catching on”, he means ________.

A.animals begin to realize the dangers on the road

B. animals begin to learn to use ecopassages

B.animals are crossing the road in groups

D. animals are increasing in number

23. The writer asks visitors and drivers to look around when traveling because ________.

A.wild animals may attack cars

B. wild animals may jam (阻塞) the road

B.they may see wild animals in the park

D. they may see wild animals on ecopassages

A.famous people like Michael Jordan also like to use Facemail

B.Facemail can make shopping on the Internet more interesting

C.Nike website will increase its sales by Jordan

D.Michael Jordan will serve you himself on Nike website

The concept of personal choice in relation to health behaviors is an important one. About 90% of all illness might be preventable if individual made sound personal health choices based upon present medical knowledge. We all enjoy our freedom of choice and do not like to see it limited when it is within the legal and moral boundaries of society. The structure of American society allows us to make almost all our own personal decisions that may affect our health. If we do desire ,we can smoke ,drink much ,refuse to wear seat belts, eat whatever food we want ,and live a completely sedentary life-style without any exercise.

The concept of personal choice about health is important because____.

A. personal health choices help cure most illnesses

B. it helps raise the level of our medical knowledge

C. it is basic to personal freedom in American society

D. wrong decisions could lead to poor health

Dorms (宿舍) are part of the typical college experience. From RAs to shared bathrooms and cafeteria (自助的)food, nothing quite compares, and despite all the horror stories, many people look back on dorm living as one of the best times of their life. But, like anything else, it has both its pros and cons.

Expenses and Goodies. Face it: living on campus gives you a nice, neat package deal, (一揽子交易), as far as facilities (设施) go. Unless off-campus housing is very cheap, you’re probably going to save a lot of money by living in a dorm. Most schools charge one flat rate for both your housing and meal-plan. And with a dorm you don’t have to worry about paying for utilities (公共事业): electricity, water, phone, it’s all included. Not to mention cable(网线), on most campuses, ethernet access, a high speed, constant connection to the Internet, which is now available in most dorms.

Privacy: One thing you find a little lacking in many dorms is privacy. You can end up sharing your bedroom with one person and your bathroom with twelve, which can be a big adjustment (适应). Rest assured that not all dorms are like this; you can get a single in many dorms (although you may have to pay more) and you might only share a bathroom with a couple other people. And many students find they really don’t mind close quarters(=living space), after the initial(最初的) adjustment period. Know both your surroundings and yourself. If it is a new situation, check to see exactly how much privacy you will and won’t have. And consider whether or not you’re the kind of person who can deal with a low-privacy situation. But give yourself a chance, too.

Atmosphere: Perhaps the most irreplaceable(不能替代的) thing about dorm life is the atmosphere. You may find yourself becoming close friends with your roommate and the other people on your hall or floor, forming relationships which will make your college experience more enjoyable and may last well beyond graduation. There is also, of course, more supervision(监督)in a dorm, which many people don’t like. It’s not all bad, though, because you may find yourself very grateful for the nearby help, if a party gets out of hand or something else goes wrong. And there’s always the bonus (额外利息) of less commute (通勤) time to your classes and easier access to campus resources.

24.The word “goodies” in the first line of the second paragraph

means .

A. tasty food

B. attractive goods

C. useful facilities

D. friendship

25.Living in dorms has all the following advantages except

that .

A.dorms are usually cheaper than off-campus housing

B.living in dorms saves time that you spend traveling to classes every day

C.living in dorms means that there are many facilities available to you

D.living in dorms keeps you in close touch with what happens in your school

26.One of the drawbacks (缺点) of living in dorms is_________.

A. additional fee for utilities

https://www.wendangku.net/doc/6f11411375.html,ck of privacy

C.less supervision

D.no help if something goes wrong

27.A person who can deal with a low-privacy situation ________.

A. doesn’t mind close quarters

B. will never share a bathroom with others

C. doesn’t like new surro undings

D. can easily adjust to a new situation

Dr Kimsma ,from the Netherlands, believes that euthanasia(安乐死)is not simply a question of ending someone’s life. The important thing is how that person’s life ends. If someone chooses enthanasia, he doesn’t have to think about the worry, and the suffering only. He can also focus (集中在)on the things he really wants to do, such as taking a last trip, or making up a fight with someone in the family, or saying goodbye. The pressure on that person becomes lighter when he knows he won’t have to go on suffering long. Often, people who have chosen euthanasia have such peace of mind that they die naturally, “ If I ended the life of a patient because I had not given him good care ,I would feel ashamed and guilty,” he said.

Dr Kimsma admits that in the case of euthanasia there is a conflict(冲突) between his goals as a doctor: saving life and helping those who are suffering. He believes that helping people is the morally right thing to do.” My patient can be sure that I will not let them suffer unnecessarily alone. That is just my goal a nd duty as a doctor.” He says he can only continue to perform euthanasia because it is something that happens very rarely.

Dr Ravenscroft, a medical professor in Australia, holds that euthanasia is wrong. He believes that when people have an incurable illness, they should be given care that lessens their pain and suffering and helps them to feel less afraid. He says that such care should improve the quality of a person’s life, even in the very last part of his life, without bringing death. Dr Ravenscroft suggests that a patient should be

given a drug to help him sleep for the last few days of his life, if nothing else will help him.

Ravenscroft says, “ Life is a great mystery. We take part in all of life including dying, but we are not masters of it.”

Besides, if euthanasia is lawful, it may be easier to choose death instead of continuing to look for a better treatment. He fears that people can be persuaded to choose euthanasia when they do not really want to.

28. Which of the following is Not Dr Kimsma’s opi nion?

A. People may die peacefully in euthanasia because they feel less pressure.

B. Euthanasia allows people to focus on important personal things in

the last part of their lives.

C. It is wrong to give up looking for a better treatment for an incurable

disease.

D. It is wrong to let a patient suffer when the disease is beyond cure.

29. According to Dr Kimsma , when the two goals of a doctor conflict,_____

A. saving life of those who are sick should come first.

B. helping people who are suffering should come first.

C. it is up to his patient to make a decision.

D. the solution varies according to the situation.

30. Dr Ravenscroft is against euthanasia . One of his reasons is that

_______.

A. nobody really wants to end his own life .

B. saving life is the only goal for a doctor .

C. care given to people having incurable diseases can make them live longer.

D. people can be given painkillers and drugs to make them suffer less.

31. By “ we are not masters of it” , Dr Ravenscroft means _______.

A. we have no righ t to end a person’s life .

B. we can never tell what will happen to us.

C. life is as mysterious as death.

D. life is always beyond our knowledge .

Fidenzio Salvatori is determined that the city of Toronto will have an outdoor marketplace for merchants from its immigrant community, complete with dancing and other forms of amusement from their native countries. "Toronto is truly multicultural (多元化)," he said in a newspaper interview. "It's a city from many places, and a multicultural marketplace will help Torontonians to understand and appreciate the rich variety of cultural groups in our city."

Salvatori, aged 23, will soon complete his studies at the University of Toronto. He was

eleven years old when he came to Canada from Italy with his parents. "Most of Toronto's

immigrants are from lands where the marketplace has always been part of daily life," he said.

Salvatori has been interested in getting an open-air market for Toronto for the last three

years. This year, with the help of two fellow students, he prepared a proposal on the subject and presented it to the city's Executive Committee, asking for their support. The proposal pointed out Toronto's rich variety of national groups, "whose customs include market shopping."

Under a Canadian government program for multiculturalism, the three students have

received two thousand dollars with which they will do a study to find out whether Toronto's

immigrant businessmen would support an open-air market. They hope the merchants will support the plan strongly. "A study done earlier this year showed that 90 percent of shoppers would be in favor of it," Salvatori said. "At first it would be an experiment. But we think it will prove to be good business for the merchants, as well as a tourist attraction."

There is no doubt that students should learn something about how computers work, just as we expect them at least to understand that the internal combustion engine has something to do with burning fuels, expanding gases and pistons being driven. For people should have some basic ideas of how the things that they use do what they

do .Further ,students might be helped by a course that considers the computer`s effect on society. But that is not what is meant by computer literacy. For computer literacy is not a form of literacy ;it is a trade skill that should not be taught as a liberal art.

Learning how to use a computer and learning how to program one are two different activities. A case might be made that the able citizens of tomorrow should free themselves from their fear of computers. But this is quite different from saying that all ought to know how to program one. Leave that to people who have chosen programming as a career .While programming can be lots of fun ,and while our society needs some people who are expert at it, the same is true of auto repair and violin-making.

Learning how to use a computer is not that difficult ,and it gets easier all the time as programs become more “user-friendly”. Let us assume that in the future everyone is going to have to know how to use a computer to be a competent citizen. What does the phrase “learning to use a computer ”mean?

It sounds like “learning to drive a car ”, that is it sounds as if there is some set of definite skills that ,once gained ,enable one to use a computer.

The author`s purpose in writing this passage is ______.

A. to stress the effect of the computer on society

B. to explain the idea of computer literacy

C. to tell the requirements for being competent citizens of tomorrow

D. to emphasize that computer programming is an interesting and

demanding job

Have you ever felt your mind falling into disorder after a sleepless night? You couldn't come up with an original thought no matter how hard you tried.

You were probably right if you thought that was caused by a lack of sleep. Dr Horne, a sleep researcher in England, studied 24 college students. One group got their normal eight hours of sleep. The other group didn't get the smallest amount of sleep—they stayed awake all night. The next day, Dr Horne tested the students. He asked them questions that required creative and original thinking. One of the questions was "How many uses can a cardboard box be put to?"

The result? The wide—awake students did well on the test. The tired students did poorly.

Research has already shown that tired people can do OK on tests of habitual thinking, like simple addition. But Dr Horne tested creative thinking only.

As part of his study, he offered an amount of money as a reward to the sleepy students if they did well. But even this encouragement wasn't enough to help the students conquer their tiredness. They did poorly. Dr Horne believes that the part of the brain where thinking takes place may get worn out during waking hours. Sleep may help to repair the brain. Without any sleep, he emphasizes,"Even if you pay closer attention, you cannot do better."

This study gives people something to think about, especially people like hospital workers who must stay awake all night and then make quick decisions.

35、It can be known from the passage that lack of sleep may ___________.

A、be a cause of some serious diseases

B、cause one to lose his ability to calculate

C、do harm to one's power of usual thinking

D、weaken one's power of usual thinking

36、Which of the following statements is supposed by the passage?

A、Hospital workers can think well in spite of sleep.

B、People cannot work well without good sleep.

C、Those who are used to keeping awake all night do not like to sleep more hours.

D、Those who cannot sleep well day and night are all learned men.

37、Probaly who will not show great interest in this research result?

A、Anybody

B、Doctors

C、Nurses

D、Students

38、Which of th following might be the best title for the passage?

A、An Experiment on 24 College Students

B、Dr Horne, A Sleep Researcher

C、Encouragement and Results

D、Sleep and Original Thinking

十一

On average, American kids ages 3 to 12 spent 29 hours a week in school, eight hours more than they did in 1981. They also did more household work and participated in more of such organized activities as soccer and ballet. Involvement in sports, in particular, rose almost 50% from 1981 to 1997: boys now spend an average of four hours a week playing sports; girls log half that time. All in all, however, children’s leisu re time dropped from 40% of the day in 1981 to 25%.

“Children are affected by the same time crisis that affects their

parents, ” says Sandra Hofferth, who headed the recent study of children’s timetable. A chief reason, she says, is that more mothers are working outside the home. (Nevertheless children in both double-income and “male breadwinner” households spent comparable amounts of time interacting (相互影响) with their parents. 19 hours and 22 hours respectively (各自的). In contrast, children spent only 9 hours with their single mothers.)

All work and no play could make for some very messed-up kids. “play is the most powerful way a child explores the world and learns about himself, ”says T. Berry Brazelton, professor at Harvard Medical School. Unstructured play encourages independent thinking and allows the young to negotiate their relationships with their peers, but kids ages 3 to 12 spent only 12 hours a week engaged in it.

The children sampled spent a quarter of their rapidly decreasing “free time ” watching television. But that, believe it or not, was one of the findings parents might regard as good news. If they’re spending less time in front of the TV set, however, kids aren’t replacing it with reading. Despite efforts to get kids more interested in books, the children spent just over an hour a week reading. Let’s face it, who’s got the time?

39.By mentioning “the same time crisis” Sandra Hofferth means .

A.children have little time to play with their parents

B.children are not taken good care of by their working parents C.both parents and children suffer from lack of leisure time

D.both parents and children have trouble managing their time

40.According to the author a child develops better if .

A.he has plenty of time reading and studying

B.he is left to play with his peers in his own way

C.he has more time participating in school activities

D.he is free to interact with his working parents

41.The author is concerned about the fact that American kids .

A.are engaged in more and more structured activities

B.are increasingly neglected by their working mothers

C.are spending more and more time watching TV

D.are involved less and less in household work.

42.We can infer from the passage that .

A.extracurricular (课外活动) activities promote children’s intelligence

B.most children will turn to reading with TV sets switched off C.efforts to get kids interested in reading have been fruitful D.most parents believe reading to be beneficial to children

It isn’t often that an entire industry is symbolized in the figure of a single human being, and such is the case with Canadian aviation and the aircraft industry. The man is the Hon. John A. D.McCurdy and the life story of this still vigorous (积极的), distinguished Canadian is at once and at the same time the thrilling history of aviation’s progress in Canada.

It all began one cold February day in 1909 at Baddeck, Nova Scotia, when John McCurdy confounded(击败) the critics by flying the Silver Dart, an aircraft designed by himself, for half a mile over the ice of Brasdeor Lakes. This was the first powered flight in Canada and the first by a British subject in the Commonwealth. McCurdy gave proof of his flying ability-and of the development and the use of the aileron by being the first man in the world to carry out a figure eight in the air. He became the first to pilot a flying boat, taking off from Long Island Sound. He flew the first airplane to Mexico. In 1911 he had made the longest flight to date, and that over open sea 90 miles from Key West to Havana. He won the first cross country race in Canada 40 miles from Hamilton to Toronto-and he transmitted the first radio message from aircraft.

When World WarⅡcame, McCurdy took on board supervisory(监督) authority for Canadian aircraft production by serving with the government in various senior positions.

Following World WarⅡ, McCurdy was honored by being made lieutenant governor (政府顾问) of Nova Scotia where he made Canada’s first historic flight. He now lives in Montreal with a summer home in Baddeck, site of his first flight.

(NMET2003,C ) Fermat`s Last Theorem .First put forward by the French mathematician Pierre de Fermat in the seventeenth century ,the theorem had baffled and beaten the finest mathematical minds ,including a French woman scientist who made a major advance in working out the problem ,and who had to dress like a man in order to be able to study at the Ecole Polytechnique.

Which of the following best explains the meaning of the word “baffle” as it is used in the text?

A.To encourage people to raise questions

B.To cause difficulty in understanding .

C.To provide a person with an explanation.

D.To limit people`s imagination.

(NMET2002 ,E) A child`s birthday party doesn`t have to be a hassle; it can be a basket of fun ,according to Beth Anaclerio, an Evaston mother of two, ages 4 and 18 months.

What does the underlined word “hassle” probably mean?

A.A party designed by specialists.

B.A plan requiring careful thought.

C.A situation causing difficulty or trouble.

D.A demand made by guests.

A “You can use me as a last resort(选择), and if nobody else volunteers, then I will do it.” This was an actual reply from a parent after I put out a request for volunteers for my kids lacrosse(长曲棍球)club. I guess that there's probably some demanding work schedule, or social anxiety around stepping up to help for an unknown sport. She may just need a little persuading. So I try again and tug at the heartstrings. I mention the single parent with four kids running the show and I talk about the dad coaching a team that his kids aren’t even on … At this point the unwilling parent speaks up,“Alright. Yes, I’ll do it.” I’m secretly relieved because I know there’s real power in sharing volunteer responsibilities among many. The unwilling parent organizes the meal schedule, sends out emails, and collects money for end-of-season gifts. Somewhere along the way, the same parent ends up becoming an invaluable member of the team. The coach is able to focus on the kids while the other parents are relieved to be off the hook for another season. Handing out sliced oranges to bloodthirsty kids can be as exciting as watching your own kid score a goal. Still, most of us volunteers breathe a sigh of relief when the season comes to a close. That relief is coupled with a deep understanding of why the same people keep coming back for more: Connecting to the community(社区)as you freely give your time, money, skills, or services

A(words:364&192) People do not analyze every problem they meet. Sometimes they try to remember a solution from the last time they had a similar problem. They often accept the opinions or ideas of other people. Other times they begin to act without thinking. They try to find a solution by trial and error. However, when all these methods fail, the person with a problem has to start analyzing. There are six stages in analyzing a problem. First the person must recognize that there is a problem. For example, Sam’s bicycle is broken, and he cannot read it to class as he usually does. Sam must see that there is a problem with his bicycle. Next the thinker must define the problem. Before Sam can repair his bicycle, he must find out the reason why it does not work. For instance, he must determine if the problem is with the gears, the brakes, or the frame. He must make his problem more specific. Now the person must look for information that will make the problem clearer and lead to possible solutions. For instance, suppose Sam decided that his bike does not work because there is something wrong with the gear wheels. At this time, he can look in his bicycle repair book and read about gears. He can talk to his friends at the bike shop. He can look at his gears
