Practice makes perfect!

Passage 1 Wake and work晨起运动教你体验美国海军的真实生活。

SHANIYAH Scott found it hard to finish 15 pushups (俯卧撑).

“I need to start doing them more often,‖ said Scott, 16, from New York state in the US. ―They will become my favorite exercise.‖

Scott, along with 400 sleepy-eyed middle- and high-school students, recently learned what it means to be a marine (水兵). The students took part in the “Wake Up and Work Out”event held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It was hosted by the US Marine Corps and the 2015 National Urban League Conference.

Meeting at a university’s campus at 7 am, the students were introduced to Master Sergeant (警官) Damian Cason, who shouted orders for pushups, jumping jacks (开合跳) and other activities. “Is everyone awake already?‖ Cason asked loudly, after the group had completed a set of 20 jumping jacks.

The event was about the importance of physical activity and gave a close-up view of what that means when you‘re a marine.

“It was a wake-up call, not only physically, but mentally (精神上的), to let these kids know that their health is important,”said Major Nadrian McGill.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the increasing obesity rate (肥胖率) among children and teenagers is already having an effect on their health. Of obese young people aged 5 to 17, 70 percent had at least one risk factor (危险因素) for heart disease.

William Knowles, who served in the US Army, pointed out a lack (缺乏) of exercise in today’s world.

“A lot of people across society, young and old, spend too much time sitting down. People who sit in front of a computer exercise their fingers and not their body,‖ said Knowles.

Destiny Ferguson, a 16-year-old from Florida, was taking part in the conference for a second year.

“It‘s a really cool experience,‖ said Destiny. ―I still keep in touch with many people fr om last year. Even if you‘re not trying to make friends, it‘s fine, because you end up doing it anyway.‖Captain Matthew Ervine, who works for the recruiting (招聘) office in the marines, said the program was also part of a larger effort to reach out to young people.

“The marines cared enough to take the time to come out and inspire us,‖ said Scott.

1. What are the participants in ―Wake Up and Work Out‖ most probably ordered to do every day?

A. Have a meeting at 7 am.

B. Complete 30 push-ups.

C. Finish 20 jumping jacks.

D. Run 20 laps around the campus.

2. What is the main purpose of the ―Wake Up and Work Out‖ event?

A. To remind students of the importance of physical activity.

B. To train students to be qualified (合格的) Marines.

C. To help students to challenge their physical limits.

D. To prove to students that mental health is more important than physical health.

3. What‘s William Knowles‘ attitude toward young people‘s health?

A. Positive (肯定的).

B. Critical (批判的).

C. Mixed.

D. Doubtful.

4. Why does Destiny Ferguson think the event is a cool experience?

A. He has learned how to keep mentally and physically fit.

B. He has learned a lot about the lives of Marines.

C. He has prepared himself better for college.

D. He has made many friends because of the event.

Passage2 Kobe’s goodbye to his great love

ONE of the greatest, most interesting careers in NBA history is coming to an end.

On Nov 29, the Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant said that he would retire after this season, ending his 20-year career with the team. “My heart can take it, my mind can handle (承受) it, but my body knows it’s time to say goodbye,”the 37-year-old shooting guard wrote on The Players Tribune website in a poem called Dear Basketball.

His NBA MVP award, five NBA championships with the Lakers and two Olympic gold medals mean that ―Kobe Bryant is one of the greatest players in the history of our game‖, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. ―Whether playing in the Finals or making jum p shots after midnight in an empty gym, he has a real love for the game.‖

Indeed, there have been so many stories about Bryant’s strong work ethic (道德) that the SB Nation website once said that the basketball player was “not totally human”.

When Team USA worked on its conditioning in Las Vegas months before it headed to London for the 2012 Olympic Games, Bryant started off his workout (练习) at 5:30 every morning in the gym until the team practice began at 11 am. During each practice Bryant counted every single shot he hit, and he wouldn‘t leave the gym until he had hit at least 400.

This kind of hard work certainly paid off. The third-leading scorer in NBA history, Bryant is ahead of Michael Jordan, the legend to whom Bryant was compared as soon as he became the first guard ever to be drafted (招募) straight out of high school by the league in 1996.

Toward the end of Jordan’s career with the Washington Wizards, Bryant was becoming a new star in the league, which somehow (以某种方式) showed that “his career would always be in the shadow (阴影) of Jordan’s”, ESPN noted.

This had something to do with the media at the start of the Internet age. “When Jordan argued with teammates, it was kept quiet or shown as a sign of his will to win,”said USA Today. “But when Bryant argued with teammates, it was called ‘selfish’(自私的) and shown on news websites.‖

In the eyes of many young players, though, Bryant was the new icon (偶像). “I didn’t really have the chance to watch Jordan, but Kobe was my Jordan,”Indiana Pacers forward Paul George wrote on his micro blog. “After his game was over, I’d go in the front yard and try to copy everything I had just seen. I‘m not saying he‘s better than Jordan –but for me, growing up, that‘s who I idolized and looked up to.‖

Interesting story of ba sketball superstar‘s first name

Kobe is not a common English name. It is actually a special type of Japanese beef. Bryant’s parents were eating in a Japanese steakhouse (牛排餐厅) in Philadelphia called Kobe, and they had such a good time that they decided to name their son after the restaurant. During the 2001 Finals, which saw Kobe‘s Lakers take on the Philadelphia 76ers, the steakhouse changed its name to ―The Answer‖ in support of the 76ers.

IT’S long been known that processed (加工的) meat isn’t the healthiest of foods. But a recent report from the World Health Organization (WHO) still set off alarms (警告). It said that processed meat, like sausages, hams and bacon, for example, is a “Group 1”carcinogen (致癌物), making it as dangerous as cigarettes.

But that‘s not the only downer for meat lovers. The organization also said red meat, including beef, pork and lamb, are ―probably‖ cancer-causing.

It may seem like the report is asking people to kiss their steaks and bacon goodbye, but the reality is far less worrying.u In fact, the report doesn‘t mean that sausages and cigarettes are equally dangerous, according to the WHO. It only means that the evidence linking meats to cancer is as strong as that between smoking and cancer.

This is why scientists suggest that you cut down the amount of meat you eat instead of giving meat up altogether.

“I like to look at the big picture of the overall diet,”Dana White, a food expert at Quinnipiac University, US, told CBS News. “Red meat can provide essential amino acids (氨基酸), iron and vitamin B12. When lean cuts (精瘦肉) are eaten in moderation (适度), it can still fit into a healthy diet.‖

But diet isn’t the only factor (因素) you can control to reduce your cancer risk. Experts suggest taking the same broad, overall approach to balancing your lifestyle choices.

“Cancer is a complex (复杂的) disease not caused by single foods,”said The North American Meat Institute in a statement after the WHO report was released.

That argument was supported by Teresa Norat, a researcher from the Imperial College London and an advisor on the WHO report.

According to Norat, apart from cutting down on meat, people should also “have a diet rich in fiber (纤维), from fruit and vegetables, keep a healthy body weight throughout (遍及) their lives

and be physically active”, she told the BBC. 21ST

How much is too much?

RED meat: No more than 300 grams each week. Avoid cooking it by grilling (烧烤), pan-frying or any other high-temperature methods since that produces the highest amounts of cancer-causing chemicals (化合物).

Processed meat: Scientists suggest that you avoid it completely, but eating a bacon sandwich every once in a while isn‘t going to do much harm.

1. The report from the World Health Organization mainly told people that ______.

A. processed foods are the least healthy diet

B. processed meat has been proved to be a cause of cancer

C. eating red meat is as dangerous as smoking

D. there still isn‘t enough evidence to connect eating meat in any way with cancer

2. The underlined word ―downer‖ in the second paragraph probably mean s ______.

A. excitement

B. change

C. excuse

D. disappointment

3. Dana White suggests that ______.

A. people should only eat fruit and vegetables

B. meat is still necessary because it‘s rich in fiber

C. it is wise to eat lean cuts in the proper amount

D. physical exercise has more health benefits than diet control

Passage 4 Making me smile

DEAR barista (咖啡师),

You didn‘t know me and you didn‘t know my story. Most importantly, you probably didn‘t knowthat writing the simple word ―smile‖ on my order would change my day for the better. When you look at me, you might assume I‘m happy, outgoing and full of life. But you don‘t really see the complete me. You wouldn‘t know that behind this smile is a girl who has broken and gone to pieces. You wouldn‘t know this girl ha d so much self-hate, she starved herself for over half her young life. Or that she‘s tried to end her own life five times. I‘m guessing you didn‘t know these past few weeks, and that day particularly, had been extremely hard. You were just going about your job, unaware that writing a small word on my drink would change my day and possibly my life.

Maybe you wrote “smile”on my drink because you saw the feeding tube (进食管). (1)Or maybe you could see past my fake smile because you’ve been where I am. Either way, I’m grateful. But you took that extra second to add something positive to a life that‘s been filled with so much negativity lately.

You see, my day was made up of a horrible doctor’s appointment and a horrible therapy session (治疗). I was filled with hopelessness, and my suicidal (自杀的) thoughts were getting worse. When my anorexia (厌食症) is bad sometimes coffee is the only thing I can drink. But I was afraid to drink even coffee that day. (2)If I hadn‘t seen that cup, I could have done more damage to myself that night. When I read that word, I couldn‘t help but smile.

Passage5 Spirit of Canada

STUDYING abroad all by yourself, away from your family and friends, can be terrifying. Yet it‘s also a great opportunity to see what‘s out there in the world and experience other practices.

In Canada, the biggest cultural difference I‘ve experienced is the differen ce in spirit and attitude.

Politeness, for instance, makes up a large part of Canadian culture. In fact, Canada is famous

for its politeness. Almost every Canadian is very friendly and warm. Since arriving here, I have almost never opened a single door for myself because someone has always held the door open for me, whether in the school‘s hallway or in a shopping mall. Sometimes, strangers smile at me, even on the street, which is something that doesn‘t often happen in China.

Beyond this, patriotism (爱国精神) also plays an important role in Canadians’lives. All Canadian schools play the national anthem (国歌) every morning. When the anthem is on, every student and teacher has to stop what he or she is doing and stand up until it ends.

In addition, every year, Nov 11 is Remembrance Day, a memorial (纪念的) day for members of the Canadian armed forces(军队) who have died while fighting for the country. On that day, every student and teacher wears a poppy (罂粟花) flower on his or her clothes to remember and respect them. Students get together in the cafeteria to watch memorial videos and stand silently to remember the ordinary people who made huge sacrifices (牺牲).

Another difference is the atmosphere (氛围) in school. Canadian classrooms are much freer and more relaxing than Chinese classrooms. Students don’t have to stand up when they answer questions and can freely give their personal opinions without fear of making mistakes. Not only that, in the basketball game between my school and another school, even the principal (校长) cheered loudly for us when we scored.

Canada’s spirit and attitudes have made it one of the largest immigrant (移民) countries in the world. Different cultures have grown and flourished (繁荣) here. It’s my honor and fortune to study and live in this melting pot, Canada.

1. What is the biggest type of cultural difference the author has experienced since moving to Canada?

A. Language.

B. Lifestyle.

C. Spirit and attitude.

D. Holidays and celebrations.

2. How many types of cultural difference does the author mention in the article?

A. Two.

B. Three.

C. Four.

D. Five.

3. How does the author feel about studying in Canada?

A. Terrified.

B. Fortunate.

C. Bittersweet.

D. Uncomfortable.

Passage6 How Dickens changed Christmas

IF you asked people in the UK or the US about Dickens and Christmas today, you would see many blank (茫然的) looks. Charles Dickens (1812-1870) may have been one of the fathers of modern Christmas, but we no longer think of him straight away when we think of the Christmas season.

In fact, celebrating Christmas as much as we do today in the West is quite new. Before the 19th century, Christmas was getting less popular. It was only when commercial (商业的) society grew that it became the event it is now. Once more people could read and there were popular magazines and books to buy, a truly memorable (著名的) story like A Christmas Carol (1843) could have a big effect on the way people thought and acted.

Dickens’influence on Christmas is mainly down to this story. The author changed the way Christmas was celebrated, and The Telegraph once called him “the man who invented the modern Christmas”. Christmas trees, a great feast (盛宴) on Christmas Day, getting together with family and friends – you could say that all of these came from A Christmas Carol.

This popular story of a mean old man made to see the value of generosity (慷慨) and friendship is perfect for the spirit of Christmas: “Peace on Earth and goodwill to all men.”

Reading the story or watching it on film, we see a man and the characters around him saved when he saves himself by learning to do good.

Dickens had the kind of fame (名望) that music and sports stars have today. A perfect story about Dickens and Christmas shows this. After hearing of the death of the world famous novelist in 1870, a kid is supposed to have asked: “What? Then will Father Chri stmas die too?‖

DO you feel unhappy in winter? If so, you’re not alone. Seasonal affective disorder (季节性情绪失调), or SAD, means that people often share your sadness at this time of year.

The disorder is a type of depression (抑郁) that includes feelings of hopelessness and guilt (负罪感), and it is mostly not felt in the summer, according to the Washington Post. Treatment for the problem can be unusual –it can include sitting near a very bright light for 30 minutes or so every morning. Evidence for the use of light to treat SAD has been around for more than 10 years, yet doctors were slow to recommend (推荐) it, said Raymond Lam, a psychiatrist (精神病医生) at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. “One reason is that doctors are used to prescribing (开处方) medicine,”he said.

While SAD may affect (影响) 1 to 2 percent of the population, Lam said, less serious versions (变化形式) of the problem affect 10 to 15 percent of people. A less serious case is more likely than full SAD to come with symptoms (症状) such as oversleeping, overeating and low energy. However, it is less likely to cause psychological (心理的) symptoms such as a very low mood (情绪).

But don’t be so sure that you are affected by SAD yet. David Kerr of Oregon State University in the US helped to carry out a study and believes that the public may overestimate (高估) the effect of the winter blues, reported Science Daily. Reasons for this may include knowing about SAD, the high amount of depression in general, and people simply disliking winter weather. “We found a very small effect during the winter months, but it wasn‘t as great as some people think it is,‖ said Columbia Univers ity researcher Jeff Shaman, a co-author of the study.

“We may not have as much fun, we can feel like we are being kept inside, and we may be less active in the winter,‖ Kerr said. ―But that‘s not the same as long-lasting sadness and problems with eating and sleep –real signs of depression.‖

So don‘t be so sure that you‘re sad in winter because of a medical condition – you might just hate the cold weather like most people do!

1. According to the article, seasonal affective disorder ______.

A. is more common among elderly people

B. never takes place in summer

C. usually leads to serious depression symptoms

D. can be treated with the use of light

2. Which of the following statements would David Kerr agree with?

A. People often mistake bad moods for SAD symp-toms.

B. Oversleeping and over-eating are typical symp-toms of full SAD.

C. Only 10 to 15 percent of the population suffers from SA

D.

D. People had little knowledge about SAD until a decade ago.

3. The main purpose of the article is to ______.

A. present a new form of treatment for SAD

B. explain the symptoms of SAD and its causes

C. teach people how to get over winter blues

D. inform people of the basics of SAD and typical misunderstandings about it

Passage8 Remember praise

THIS is an excerpt (摘录) from therapist Laura Trice‘s speech at TED (一个旨在―用思想的力

Hi. I‘m here to talk to you about the importance of praise, admiration and ―thank you‖, and making them specific and genuine (诚恳的).

The way I got interested in this was, I noticed that when I was growing up, and until about a few years ago, I would want to say thank you to someone. I would want to praise them. I would want to take in their praise of me and then I‘d just stop myself. I asked myself: Why? I felt shy.

I felt embarrassed. And then my question became: Am I the only one who does this? So I decided to study that question.

I‘m fortunate enough to work in a rehab facility (康复中心), so I get to see people who are facing life and death with addiction. Sometimes it comes down to something as simple as that their core (中心的) wound is how their father died without ever saying he‘s proud of them. But then, they hear from all the family and friends that the father told everybody else that he was proud, but he never told the so n. It‘s because he didn‘t know that his son needed to hear it.

The guy said: ―You know, when you true the wheels, it‘s going to make the bike so much better.‖ I‘d get the same bike back, and they‘d have taken all the little warps (弯曲) out of those same whe els I‘ve had for two and a half years, and my bike would feel like new.1.I used to take my bike into the bike store and they‘d do something called ―truing (校正)‖ the wheels.

What do you need to hear? Go home to your wife and ask her, ―What do you need?‖ Go home to your husband and ask him what he needs. Go home and ask those questions and then help the people around you.So, I‘m going to challenge all of you.2.I want you to true your wheels and be honest about the praise that you need to hear.

It‘s simple. But why should we care about this? We talk about world peace. How can we have world peace with different cultures, different languages? I think it starts in each of our households. 3.So, let‘s make things right in our own backyards.

IT is one of the most famous movie series in the West. And its characters have had a big effect on pop culture for decades.

From 1977 to 2005, the six hit movies from previous writer and director George Lucas were loved by kids and adults alike. And the latest movie in the Star Wars series, The Force Awakens, came out on Dec 18 in the US. It hits cinemas in the Chinese mainland on Jan 9.

In many English-speaking countries, references are made to the Star Wars movies without even thinking –someone might say ―may the Force be with you‖, for example, to wish you luck.
