Unit1
One Saturday morning, Bob insisted that he should do the cooking(S1) for a change. He had always considered himself as an excellent cook. His wife, Susan, however, hardly thought so(S2). But since Bob insisted, she agreed unwillingly to let him have a free hand.
Then Susan went into the sitting-room to read. She had hardly settled down(S3) when Bob began calling to her from

the kitchen. She had half expected(S4) this would happen, smiled to herself and continued to read. Seeing that there was no response (反应), Bob came into the sitting-room himself. How could he work with no equipment(S5), he demanded. Susan calmly told him where everything was and Bob rushed back only to find that the milk had equipment(S6).
About an hour passed and Susan could not understand why things were so quiet(S7). Bob must be managing after all! The smell of something burning(S8) quickly proved her wrong and caused her to drop her book and run to the kitchen. Thick smoke greeted(S9) her when she opened the door. When the smoke cleared, Susan saw to her dismay that her once spotless kitchen now looked like a battlefield(S10).

Unit2
He is remembered as the "Father of His Country". For nearly twenty years, he guided(S1) his nation. During the American Revolution he served in the army. In fact(S2), he was a lieutenant general (陆军中将), the highest rank in the army at that time. In 1789 he was elected president of the United States and he was reelected to _a second term (S3) in 1793. He helped to shape(S4) the beginning of the United States in three important ways. First, he commanded the Continental Army that won independence(S5) from Great Britain in the Revolutionary War. Second, he served as(S6) president of the convention (大会) that wrote the United States Constitution(S7). Third, he was the first man elected president of the United States.
No other American has been honored(S8) more than this United States citizen. The nation’s capital(S9) and one of the states were named for him. His birthday has been celebrated(S10) throughout the country since the time of the Revolutionary War. Guess who he was. George Washington? That's right.

Unit5
The atmosphere contains gases such as water vapor (蒸汽) and carbon dioxide which absorb, or trap, some of the rising heat and return it back to Earth. This warming of the planet's (S1) surface is called the greenhouse effect.
The greenhouse effect keeps the Earth's average(S2) surface temperature at about 60°F (15°C). If there were no greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, most of the heat radiated from the Earth's surface would be lost directly(S3) to outer space, and the Earth's temperature(S4) would be 0°F (-18°C), too cold for most life(S5).
Mars has a very thin atmosphere with a weak greenhouse effect. Its surface is much colder than Earth's. In fact, it is frozen(S6).
Venus has a strong greenhouse effect. Its atmosphere is thick(S7) with carbon dioxide and other gases that trap heat. The surface of Venus is much hotter than Earth's – hot enough to melt lead(S8).
About half of the sun's incoming energy reaches the Earth's surface. The rest is reflected (反射) back into space or is absorbed by the atmosphere. The Earth absorbs most of the energy that reaches its surface and re-emits it as heat (S9).
Human activities are intensifying (加强) the natural greenhou

se effect. Each year we add more than 30 billion tons of carbon dioxide to the air mainly by burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas, and cutting down and burning trees. In doing so, we are setting the stage for a warmer Earth(S10).

Unit8
Jack and Tom were good friends. They often borrowed each other's DVDs and computer games(S1). One day, Jack asked if he could borrow Tom's new digital (数字的) camera. Jack's sister was getting married(S2) and he wanted to take wedding pictures and post them on a web site. Tom hesitated (S3) about whether to lend Jack his expensive camera. But because they were good friends, he finally agreed. After the wedding, Jack took a taxi home. Unfortunately(S4), he left the camera in the taxi. Worse still(S5), he couldn't remember which taxi company he rode with. The next day he told Tom the camera was gone forever (S6) and it was too bad he couldn't afford to replace it. But Tom was positive (S7) Jack had money, for he was always buying expensive stuff. In fact, he just bought a new notebook computer. Tom had little opinion of those who didn't care about other people's property(S8). He thought Jack needed to learn a lesson(S9) and he knew a good way to teach him. "I'll borrow his new notebook computer, then tell him I've 'lost' it and it's too bad I won't be able to replace it (S10)!"
If you were Tom, would you do as he planned to? Why or why not?

Unit10
His high-school art teacher told him, "You will never learn to draw (S1)." Publishers said he couldn't write. Yet, the books written by Theodore Seuss Geisel – better known as(S2) Dr. Seuss – have delighted millions of children around the world.
During a class at Oxford University Seuss received one sentence of praise which was enough to motivate him to continue pursuing(S3) his dream of being a writer and educator. He drew a cow with wings(S4). Suddenly Seuss heard a young woman whisper (S5), "That's a very fine flying cow." The woman was Helen Palmer, Seuss's first fan (S6) who later became his wife. With her continuing support (S7), Seuss had the motivation he needed to become a best-selling children's author of such books as *The Cat in the Hat*.
That example should remind all of us of the power of a sincere (S8) compliment. A brief word of praise is verbal sunshine and oxygen(S9) to the soul. As a matter of fact, our words – spoken or written – can become powerful deeds of kindness (S10) that build hope, give help and even change lives.
