六、阅读理解

A

The word "day" has two meanings. When we talk about the number of days in a year, we are using "day" to mean 24 hours. But when we talk about day and night, we are using "day" to mean the time between sunrise and sunset. Since the earth looks like a ball, the sun can shine on only half of it at a time. Always one half of the earth is having day and the other half night. A place is moved from day into night and from night into day over and over by the spinning(旋转)of the earth. At the equator(赤道)day and night are sometimes the same length(长度). They are each twelve hours long. The sun rises at 6 o'clock in the morning and sets at 6 o'clock in the evening. For six months the North Pole is tilted(倾料)toward the sun. In those months the Northern Hemisphere(半球)gets more hours of sunlight than the Southern Hemisphere. Days are longer than nights. South of the equator nights are longer than days. For the other six months the North Pole is tilted away from the sun. Then the Southern Hemisphere gets more sunlight. Days are longer than nights. North of the equator nights are longer than days. Winter is the season of long nights. Summer is the season of long days.

Alice spends her summer vacations walking back into history. Alice is 15 and she is a guide who shows visitors around the Fort(城堡)Delaware Museum in New York. "This year, I spun wool(纺毛线)on a spinning wheel. Last year, I was a candle maker. My first year, I cared for the garden and looked after the animals. All the jobs I've had at the fort have been really fun." Fort Delaware is a living-history museum that shows how life was in frontier(边远地区)America in the mid-1700s. "Reading about history can't compare to experiencing it for yourself ,"says Alice.

The experience begins as soon as visitors enter the fort. The smell of wood smoke fills the air. Women in petticoats(long skirts) and men in knee breeches(knee-length shorts)are busy with their chores. The guides show visitors how the settlers(移民)would have carried out everyday work. "Kids are surprised when I tell them that one of their jobs would have been to make candles," says another guide, 16-year-old Jane. "They don't realize that kids back then had to work hard." She also shows visitors how to play with toys and games.

They are playing historical parts, so the guides can't wear shorts or T-shirts when the weather is hot. But the clothes of the past can easily change modern kids into people in 18th century. "The clothing felt strange at first, but it does make it easier to get into characters," says Jane.

Working at the fort has helped Jane to appreciate her life even more. Alice agrees. "The fort has taught me how hard life was and how much work there was every day. We are so lucky with everything we have now. Life wasn't always this easy," she says.

It had been a pretty tough year for our family. My mother had lost her job and my father had passed away very suddenly. My mom had to work in a local coffee shop. It didn’t pay very well, but it was just enough for us to get by.

My mom was working on Christmas Eve because nobody else wanted to work that day. She had just opened the store when an old man came in and ordered a large black coffee.

He asked, “Do you have change for a $100 bill?”

My mom replied, “I’m sorry, I just opened the store a few minutes ago, so I don’t have enough change yet. But since it’s Christmas Eve and it is cold outside, I can give you a cup of coffee for free.”

The man thanked her for the free coffee and waited in the store. As she brought the coffee to him, she said, “Merry Christmas! Sir.”

The man took the coffee, looked at her, dropped his $100 bill in the tip jar(小费摊) and said, “Merry Christmas to you, too!” as he walked out the door.

My mother was working by herself that day, so she got to keep the entire $100 tip. His act of kindness may not have made up for such a long and difficult year, but it definitely cheered my mom up that day. I think kind acts like this truly represent the Christmas spirit(精神).

七、任务型阅读

Do you think getting cold can give you a cold? Is it bad to drink milk when you have a cold?

Ranit Mishori, a family medicine doctor in Washington, says colds are more common in winter, but not because of low temperatures. The cold weather just means people stay inside more. People like staying together and may get the common cold virus if they shake hands, sneeze or cough near one another.

Adults generally get two to three colds a year .Children are likely to catch four or five. Dr. Mishori says some people wrongly believe they can become protected from colds for the rest of their life once they get the virus one time.

There is still no cure for the common cold. But Dr Mishori says there are ways to feel better sooner.

If you get a cold, you start taking about two grams of VitaminC a day. There is an evidence(证据)that it might shorten the number of days that you will have the cold. Dr. Mishori says honey, bears' favorite food, can also help. She says honey seems especially effective(有效的) in children with colds.

Have you ever heard the old saying "feed a cold, starve(挨俄)a fever"? D. Mishori says this is not necessarily a good rule to follow. She says if you have a cold but do not feel hungry, then don't eat.

According to Dr. Mishori, you have to drink a lot.You can drink water or you can drink tea-anything that gets into your body. That's very important.

But what about drinking milk during a cold? Mishori says, "Drinking milk during a cold possibly does make you uncomfortable. But clearly if you have a baby and that's all it drinks, you should not stop giving the baby milk.”

Title: What do you know about a cold?
