There is a lot of talk these days about how kids should be interested in science. Here’s an area of science for everyone, and these cool new books might inspire you to discover your inner scientist. Scaly Spotted Feathered Frilled by Catherine Thimmesh, 58 pages, ages 9-12

Seeing a picture or a model of a dinosaur, do you wonder how anybody knows what they look like? After all, nobody has seen a living dinosaur. This book explains how scientists and artists work together to re-create dinosaurs. As scientific discoveries have been made, the models have changed. Scientific tests may one day expose what a dinosaur’s coloring was, but now artists have to use their imagination to determine how these huge creatures looked.

Beyond the Solar System by Mary Kay Carson, 128 pages, ages 10-13

This book takes readers back to the beginnings of space exploration—thousands of years ago, when people began star observation—and forward to today’s search for planets in distant parts of the Milky Way. Along with history lessons, readers get 21 activities, such as making a black hole and creating a model of Albert Einstein’s universe using a T-shirt. The activities are perfect for cold winter days.

Ultimate Bugopedia by Darlyne Murawski and Nancy Honovich, 272 pages, ages 7 and older If you’re always on the lookout for butterflies, this book is for you. Hundreds of color photos of common and unusual insects fill this hardcover. There are fascinating stories related to the photos. For example, do you know an insect feeds on the t ears of Asian cattle? There’s a question-and-answer section with an insect scientist and advice on how to help preserve endangered insects.

Journey Into the Invisible by Christine Schlitt, 80 pages, ages 9-12

If you use a magnifying glass, you know a leaf looks quite different. This book explains what

1

microscopes do and then shows what happens to things around the house when watched with this amazing scientific tool. The bacteria in your mouth, when magnified 20,000 times, look a bit like swimming pool noodles. Jack looked up and saw in the distance red and green navigation lights coming towards them and knew it must be a naval patrol (巡逻) boat because of its speed. As the humming of the boat’s powerful engines drew closer, Jack bent down.

Jack then let out a frightened cry as the brilliant beam of a searchlight broke the darkness and swept the fishing boat from head to tail. By its reflected light, Jack could clearly see the similar looks on the faces of other bent ones.

Jack knew that if the patrol boat came close enough, its men would surely see the people hidden in the fishing boat. To collect himself, he leaned his head a little so that he could see Derek standing in the head of the boat, holding the tiller (舵柄). Derek managed to wave back at the patrol boat as if he had not a care in the world. How imperturbable he was!

Someone on board the patrol boat switched on a loud speaker and a voice, made harsh and thin by its horn, demanded, “Where are you bound?”

Derek shrugged and shouted back, “Tell me where the fish run and I’ll tell you where I am bound.” The noise of idling engines drowned his voice.

“Say again!” barked the speaker.

“Anywhere where there’s fish!” Derek shouted back. There was a p ause. The boats drifted closer to each other.

“Why aren’t you showing navigation lights?”

Jack watched as Derek pretended to look puzzled and leant out over the side as if to see whether they said were true. “They must have blown out,” he apologized with a shrug. “I’ll light them again as soon as you stop rocking me about like this.”

Aboard the patrol boat, the captain was wondering if it would be worthwhile searching this old fishing boat for stowaways and how many breathing souls such a shabby boat could hide. The radio suddenly cackled. Abruptly, without another word being exchanged, the light went out and the patrol boat started its engines, speeding off into the dark, leaving the fishing boat floating about in

A scientist once said: “I have concluded that the earth is being visited by intelligently controlled vehicles from outer space.”

If we take this as a reasonable explanation for UFOs (unidentified flying objects), questions immediately come up.

“Why don’t they get in touch with us, then? Why don’t they land right on the White House lawn and declare themselves?” people asked.

In reply, scientists say that, while this may be what we want, it may not necessarily be what they want.

“The most likely explanation, it seems to me,” said Dr. Mead, “is that they are simply watching what we are up to -- that responsible society outside our solar system is keeping an eye on us to see that we don’t set in motion a chain reaction that might have unexpected effects for outside our solar system.”

Opinions from other scientists might go like this: “Why should they want to get in touch with us? We may feel we’re more important than we really are! They may want to observe us only and not interfere with the development of our civilization. They may not care if we see them but they also may not care to say ‘hello’.”

Some scientists have also suggested that Earth is a kind of zoo or wildlife reserve. Just as we set aside wilderness areas and wildlife reserves to allow animals and growing things to develop naturally while we observe them, so perhaps Earth was set aside ages ago for the same purpose.

Are we being observed by intelligent beings from other civilizations in the universe? Are they watching our progress in space travel? Do we live in a gigantic “zoo” observed by our “keepers,” but having no communication with them?

Never before in our history have we had to confront ideas like these. The simple fact is that we, who have always regarded ourselves as supreme in the universe, may not be so. Now we have to recognize that, among the stars in the heavens, there may very well be worlds inhabited by beings who are to us as we are to ants.

D. we are bound to see UFOs sooner or later

A. unfriendliness

B. suspicion

C. superiority

D. hostility

10. The tone of the writer is that of ________.

A. doubt

B. warning

C. indifference

D. criticism

Developed and developing nations can learn from each other seeking a low-carbon economy, a Chinese government official said in Shanghai yesterday.

“China doesn't lag developed nations in terms of energy saving and green economy”, said Zhou Changyi, director of the energy saving department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

“While we can learn many aspects from developed nations, they also should learn something from us, such as water conservation,”Zhou said in a speech during the new Path of China's Industrialization forum at the ongoing China International Industry Fair 2009.

He said industrialized nations and China are dealing with different issues to combat climate change. The United Kingdom, for example, is concerned about transport, buildings and new energy in reducing carbon emissions. For China, the most urgent task is how to realize new-type of industrialization and avoid mistakes that other countries made when they industrialized.

As such, overseas exhibitors at this year's fair are showing ways to help China achieve low carbon emissions in the industrial section.

Swiss power and automation technology group ABB called for a stronger focus on product life-cycle assessment, or LCA, which is used to study the environmental impact of a product from the research and manufacturing stage through its usage and recycling.

Tobias Becker, head of ABB's process automation division for North Asia and China, said LCA is an effective tool in helping manufacturing industries to reduce carbon emissions.

LCA shows that industrial customers should focus on a product's environmental impact throughout its life-cycle instead of on its initial investment or ready-to-use stage. For example, a motor's initial investment accounts for only 3 percent of its life-cycle cost, while 94 percent goes to fuel consumption and the rest to maintenance.

Richard Hausmann, North East Asia CEO of Siemens, said, “The color of future industrialization is green.”

The Germany Company recently announces that it wants to receive orders worth more than 6 billion Euros (US 8.8 billion) for intelligent net power networks, Smart Grid, over the next five years. Siemens has set a 20 per cent market share target for the global smart grid business.

A smart grid delivers electricity from suppliers to consumers using digital technology, advanced sensors specialized computers that save energy, reduce costs and increase reliability. The United States and China are considered the two biggest markets for smart grid.

11. “______” can replace the underlined word “lag” in the second paragraph.

A. Fall behind

B. Be superior to

C. Attack

D. Fear

12. Which of the following about LCA is TRUE?

A. LCA is used to study the impact on a product.

B. LCA was one of the exhibitions at this year's fair.

C. LCA can help manufacturing industries decrease carbon release a lot.

4

D. LCA shows industrial customers should focus on a product's environmental influence on its

initial investment.

13. We can infer that ______ from the eleventh paragraph of this passage

A. siemens received orders worth 6 billion Euros recently

B. siemens' plan about Smart Grid may come true in the future

C. siemens will earn $ 8.8 billion from intelligent power networks

D. siemens has occupied 20 percent market share for the global smart grid business.

14. Which of the following about Smart Grid is NOT mentioned in the passage?

A. Energy-saving

B. Low-cost

C. Security

D. Small in size

15. The best title for the passage is ______.

A. Intelligent Power Networks

B. Two Biggest Markets for Smart Grid

C. Low-carbon Economy—a Shared Goal

D. Developed and Developing Nations Can Learn From Each Other

Reforestation

Around the world there is an increase in the demand for reforestation. This is because the consumption of the forests has affected not only the animals living in the area but also the people. And reforestation is about the rebuilding of the forests that have been severely destroyed. It can offer a lot of benefits when the recreation is successful.

16 This includes collecting seedlings that are native in the area to make sure that there is a natural reconstruction of the area. Some additional trees which are not native in the area also need to be planted. 17 The importance of having multiple species of trees is considered to make sure that the needs of other species that will live and grow in the area are met.

Destroying a forest is easy but rebuilding it is really hard. 18 The plan must include accurate spacing on plants and trees. This is to ensure that they won’t cover each other while they grow. 19

The forest greatly helps in the reduction of the air pollution. Trees are responsible for the production of oxygen and absorption of carbon dioxide. 20 It is there for a reason just like everyone else on this planet.

There cannot be a better way to restore the balance of nature than to increase the forest area. We must remember that the forest is a natural habitat of wide variety of animals and plants. In this manner, there is no substitute for reforestation.

( E: 涂AB F: 涂BC G: 涂CD )

A. And global warming will speed up the destruction of forests.

B. Keep in mind that you can’t just plant the seedlings anywhere.

C. Recreations won’t work until all these details have been considered.

D. So a good plan is needed to make the reforestation a successful one.

E. The forest also protects us from typhoons and other natural disasters.

F. There are many things to be done when it comes to this type of effort.

G. It is important to make sure that they are suited to the climate and the type of soil.
