When we think about giving help to developing countries, we often think about giving money so that these countries can build schools and hospitals, buy food and medicine, or find clean water 1 . These seem to be the most important 2 needs of the people we are trying to help. However, it’s far from enough, and we’ve got to come up with some better ideas to help them.

I was very surprised, then, when I read about a plan to make cheap laptop computers for children in developing countries. A man called Nicholas Negroponte invented a cheap laptop computer, which can 3 without electricity. He decided to invent this computer after he visited a school in Cambodia.

The laptop which Mr. Negroponte has designed is a little different from the 4 laptop computers you can buy in the shops. One difference is that it will be covered in rubber so that it is very strong and won’t be 5 easily. As an electricity supply can be a problem in developing countries, the computer also has a 6 handle so that children can wind the computer up to give it extra power when 7 .

These special laptop computers will cost less than 100 US dollars and Mr Negroponte wants to build as many as 15 million machines in the first year of production. The idea is that these computers will help the children’s education as they will be able to 8 the Internet. These computers might not help the people in developing countries immediately, but by improving children’s education they should help people to find their own 9 to their problems in the long term.

The famous London Royal Circus came on a performing tour to my city, Hangzhou. My family were 1 enough to get the free tickets, so on a holiday afternoon we all went to the show. My two nephews were excitedly talking about it

Wearing shabby clothes and stretching out a dirty hand towards people, this is the traditional image of beggars. But nowadays, that image has changed in many ways. Beggars can even look exactly like a white-collar worker.

With the development of the Internet, beggars also benefit from new technology. Without standing on the street all day long, they can just sit at home and click the keyboard—―beggar websites‖ make the begging business much easier.

Just by googling the words beggar and website, dozens of such Chinese forums are found. ―Please donate 1 yuan; it will help me be rich!‖—that’s a common slogan from many of these begging websites.

The layout(版面) of these sites is quite similar: There are some funny or tragic pictures across the top of the screen, then a request for donations is classified into three levels: 1 yuan, 5 yuan and 10 yuan. Just by clicking on these buttons, one can make a kindly donation. People can pay through an online paying system or send money to a bankcard number.

These websites also provide lists of those who have donated, but almost all of them have mostly donated 1yuan per person, and online stores or other small websites can have a place on the site for a small advertisement after the donation.

Actually, such begging websites are not original in China. Online begging first appeared in the United States. Some individuals opened such websites to relieve their economic embarrassment.

In 2002, a woman in New York owed about $20,000 to the bank, so she set up a begging website and, what a surprise, she received over $13,000 from netizens which solved her problems more or less.

In some ―professional‖begging websites in the United States, the website organizer can even receive many thousands of dollars. However, the income from most of the websites found in China seems not so good.

Members of the working class have blue-collar jobs. They are construction workers, truck drivers, mechanics, steel workers, electricians, and the like. What makes this class differ from the lower class is, first, longer periods of employment -- and therefore, more fixed incomes —and, second, employment in skilled or semiskilled (半熟练的) occupations, not unskilled ones. Although unemployment hits all levels of the American economy, including those of skilled and semi-skilled workers, it is most common at the bottom of the class structure and increasingly less common at each level upward. They consider themselves to be respectable and hard working and they look down upon members of the "lower" class, whom they often consider to be lazy, dishonest, and too ready to exploit public assistance.

Most people in the working class have at least high school education. Many have some experience of college (especially community college), though few are college graduates. Unionization(成立工会) has helped the working class, but a rapidly changing economy and frequent periods of high unemployment make it difficult for most of its members to be able to increase their savings greatly. Purchasing a house for people in this class is extremely difficult, although a certain percentage may receive houses from their parents. (Home-owning rises with social class.)

A greater number of the members of the working class take relatively little satisfaction in their jobs, because much of their work is ordinary and boring. As a result, many seek their main satisfaction in recreational ( 娱乐的) activities. Many members of this class would like to earn enough money to leave their jobs and start their own businesses, though few make it. Many place their expectations on their children, hoping that they at least will rise in the ladder of success, American style.

5.Which of the following is true about the working class.?

B. They are often offered jobs with high incomes.

C. They are often considered lazy and dishonest.

D. They are often exploited by the public.

B. they are not interested in their jobs

C. they could not earn much money

D. they are not their own bosses

Nearly 54 million cars and trucks in the United States are equipped with driver side air bags located in the center of the steering wheel. 24 million also have a passenger-side device located in the dashboard. Air bags are designed to protect against sudden, fierce frontal highway impacts.

Five years ago evidence of serious air-bag injuries began to surface. Drivers in minor fender benders suffered severe eye and ear injuries, broken bones and third-degree burns from the force of the inflating bags. In December 1991 the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) advised parents to avoid putting rear-facing infant sets in front of air bags, acknowledging that the force of the explosive bag could harm infants, whose heads were only inches away from the devices.

Last October it was determined that all children 12 and under were more susceptible(易受影响的) to injury and death than adults; their more fragile bodies were seated lower, increasing the impact of the air bag to the head area. In addition, more children were not properly restrained or were out of position when the air bag inflated. On November 22, 1996, after nearly 60 deaths and thousands of injuries were attributed to the devices, the NHTSA mandated improved labels for all new vehicles, warning of the risk to children under 13. Despite these problems, officials stress the overall effectiveness of these devices. ―All in all, air bags work well and are responsible for an 11 percent reduction in driver fatalities,‖says NHTSA Administrator Dr. Ricardo Martinez. ―First and foremost, make sure you’re properly buckled up before getting on the road,‖says Brain O’Neill, president of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Keep in mind how close you sit to an air bag. Push seats as far back as possible, remaining just close enough to control the pedals. Your face and torso should be at least 10 to 12 inches from the steering column. ―It’s not a bad idea actually to measure the distance with a ruler to be sure.‖ adds O’Neill.

Pregnant women in particular should keep their abdomen as distant from the air bag as possible. In the final trimester, women should point adjustable steering wheels upward, away from their fetus. Perhaps most important, children 12 and under should always ride in the back seat, buckled up.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, or UNODC, selected ―drugs are not child’s play‖as the theme of its 2006 international campaign, in an effort to increase public awareness of the 1 power of drugs and society’s responsibility to care for the well-being of children. The latest statistics indicate that 200 million people, 2 5 percent of the global population aged 15-64, have consumed forbidden drugs at least once in the last 12 months. But what about 3 ?

The first bullet train designed and manufactured in China with a speed of 300 kilometers per hour rolled off the production line on Saturday morning. The train was the latest model in the country’s China Railway High-speed (CRH) Series. This marks that China has joined a leading world club after Japan, France and Germany to become the fourth country capable of turning out such high speed trains. Previously, China’s fastest self-developed train ran at a service speed of up to 250 km per hour.

Those trains, which were presented to public on April 18, served the Beijing-Harbin, Beijing-Shanghai and Beijing-Guangzhou routes. The new train was made of aluminum alloy(铝合金). The train body was the lightest of its kind in the world; such a design was for the sake of energy economization. The train’s power was 12.7 kilowatts, lower than other high-speed trains, which was normally about 15 kilowatts.

The new train, which features a bar in the dining car and double-faced LCD TV screens in the first-class cars, was equipped with shock absorbers between carriages. As the train is running at a high speed, the shock absorbers are used to reduce shocking force and rocking of the train body. A train with eight carriages could seat about 600 passengers. They were expected to run on the 115-km Beijing-Tianjin route starting from August before the Beijing Olympic Games. It would reduce the journey time from the current 80 minutes to around 30 minutes.

A. has been put into use in China

B. has double-faced LCD TV sets in first carriage

C. is slower than high-speed trains

D. is made of the lightest material in the world

3.―It‖ in the last paragraph refers to ____.

A. a train with eight carriages

B. the speed of 115-km per hour

C. the Ministry of Railways

D. the use of the new train

The traditional English breakfast—tea, toast, marmalade, eggs, bacon, sausages, tomatoes, mushrooms, etc.—is both good and filling, and breakfast is the only aspect of English cooking that is frequently and enthusiastically praised by foreigners. Few of the English eat this regularly. The upper-middle and upper classes drink weak, dishwater-colored, unsweetened tea. Taking tea with sugar is regarded by many as definitely a lower class indicator. Putting the milk into the cup first is also a lower- class habit. Toast is a breakfast staple(主要内容), and an all-purpose(通用的), anytime comfort food. Margarine(人造黄油) is regarded as decidedly ―common‖ by the middle and upper classes, who use butter.

The English do not take the middle-of-the-day meal at all seriously: most make do with a sandwich or some other quick, easy, single-dish meal. The timing of lunch is not a class indicator, as almost everyone has lunch at around one o’clock. The only class indicator is what you call this meal: if you call it ―dinner‖, you are working class: everyone else, from the lower-middles upwards, calls it ―lunch‖.

The evening meal is a clear class indicator: if you call it ―tea‖ and eat it at around half past six, you are almost working class or of working-class origin. If you call it ―dinner‖, and eat it at around seven, you are probably lower-middle or middle-middle. If you normally only use the term ―dinner‖ for rather more formal evening meals, and call your informal, family evening meal ―supper‖ you are probably upper-middle or upper class. The timing of these meals tends to be more flexible, but a family supper is generally eaten at around half-past seven, while a dinner would usually be later, from half past eight onwards.

To everyone but the working classes, ―tea‖ is a light meal taken at around four in the afternoon, and consists of tea (the drink) with cakes, scones, jam, biscuits and perhaps a little sandwiches—traditionally including cucumber sandwiches—with the crusts(面包皮) cut off. The working classes call this afternoon tea, to distinguish it from the evening tea that the rest call supper or dinner.

5.What is the best title for the passage?

A. British Eating Manners

B. British Meals of A Day

C. British Foods

D. British Dinner

6.The following can serve as a class indicator EXCEPT ____.

A. calling the middle-of-the-day meal dinner

B. calling the evening meal tea

C. drinking weak, dishwater-colored, unsweetened tea

D. having lunch at around one o’clock

7.You will probably belong to upper class if you ____.

A. call ―tea‖―afternoon tea‖

B. call informal family evening meal ―supper‖

C. put milk into a cup of tea

D. call the middle-of-the-day meal ―dinner‖

8.What can we conclude from the passage?

A. Food is no more than what we eat and can be filling.

B. Different countries have different ways of eating

C. Eating habits can reflect people’s social status in a way.

D. Not all meals are taken seriously by people.

The concept for Disneyland began one Sunday, when Walt Disney was visiting Griffith Park with his daughters Diane and Sharon. While watching his daughters ride the Merry-Go-Round he came up with the idea of a place where adults and their children could o and have fun together.

His dream would lie dormant(搁置的) for many years. Walt Disney’s father helped build the grounds of the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago. This perhaps gave Disney the creative spark Disneyland originated from. The Midway Plaisance somewhat apart from the Exposition grounds included a cheaply constructed set of individual ―Country‖areas from around the world and areas representing various time periods of man; it also included many ―rides‖ including the first Ferris wheel, sky ride, a passenger train that circled around, Wild West Show, etc. One can see the resemblance of a ―Land‖filled with ―rides‖and a fairground with differently themed areas to the Disneyland created in the 1950s.

While many people had written letters to Walt Disney about visiting the Disney Studio, he realized that a functional movie studio had little to offer to the visiting fans. This began to foster ideas of building a site near his Burbank studios for tourists to visit. His idea then developed to a small play park with a boat ride and other themed areas. Walt’s initial concept, his ―Mickey Mouse Park‖, started with an 8 acres plot across Riverside Drive. Walt started to visit other parks for inspiration and ideas, including Tivoli Gardens, Greenfield Village, The Efteling, Tilburg, Playland, and Children’s Fairyland. He started his designers working on concepts, but these would grow into a project much larger than could be contained in 8 acres.

Walt hired a consultant, Harrison Price from Stanford Research Institute, to measure precisely the proper area to locate the theme park based on the area’s potential growth. With the report from Price, Disney acquired 160 acres in Anaheim, southeast of Los Angeles in neighboring Orange County. Construction began on July 18, 1954 and would cost USD 17 million to complete, and was opened exactly one year later.
