1. Describe western values regarding non-verbal language Time: Western societies are very 'clock conscious'. Time is money and punctuality is crucial. This is also the case in countries such as Japan or China where being late would be taken as an insult. However, in South America, southern Europe and the Middle East, being on time for a meeting does not carry the same sense of urgency. Meeting & Greeting: Most international business people meet with a handshake. In some countries this is not appropriate between genders. Some may view a weak handshake as sign of weakness whereas others would perceive a firm handshake as aggressive. How should people be addressed? Is it by first name, surname or title? Is small talk part of the proceedings or not? Gift-Giving: In Japan and China gift-giving is an integral part of business protocol however in the US or UK, it has negative connotations. Where gifts are exchanged should one give lavish gifts? Are they always reciprocated? Should they be wrapped? Are there numbers or colours that should be avoided? Eye Contact: In the US, UK and much of northern Europe, strong, direct eye contact conveys confidence and sincerity. In South America it is a sign of trustworthiness. However, in some cultures such as the Japanese, prolonged eye contact is considered rude and is generally avoided. Personal Space: In Europe and North America, business people will usually leave a certain amount of distance between themselves when interacting. In South America or the Middle East, business people are tactile and like to get up close. In Japan, it is not uncommon for people to leave a gap of four feet when conversing. 2. The management style and communication style of the business culture your group presented in contrast to Chinese style. Traditional management styles in Greece are highly directive and paternalistic. Therefore, it is important to give clear instructions which can be easily followed. As relationship bonds run deep in Greek culture, the manager expects loyalty. In return for this loyalty the boss will look after the interests of subordinates. The manager-subordinate relationship is viewed as reciprocal. Greek Communication Styles

Part I Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning) (5 minutes)(10分) Directions: Read the following passage, and then fill in the blanks with the missing part for the following incomplete statements. Your answers should be written on Answer Sheet 1. Most Americans spend far more of their leisure time with entertainment and information sources than in any other occupation. Of all information and entertainment sources, television is clearly dominant (支配的), with newspapers a close second, at least as a source of news and other information. Our exposure (暴露,接触) to all of these sources is important, however, because they all contribute (贡献) materials for the construction of the world in our heads. For most people, increased use of one medium does not decrease (减少) use of another. In fact, in certain cases, and especially for certain purposes, the more one uses one medium, the more likely one is to use others. There are various factors that can cause you to expose yourself to one source selectively. Some of that selective exposure is probably due to the psychological (心理) pressure you feel when avoiding the discomfort caused by the confrontation with facts and ideas contrary to your beliefs, attitudes, or behavior. However, some selective exposure is not due to such pressure for consistency (一致) but to other factors, such as your age, education, and even the area in which you live and the people with whom you associate. Quite a different sort of factor that affects your information and entertainment experiences is the social context of exposure—whether you are alone or with others when you are exposed to a medium; whether you are at home, at the office, in a theater, and so on. These contexts are as much a potential part of the message as film images on the screen or words on the page. 1.____________________ are dominant sources of news and information. 2.Our exposure to information and entertainment sources is important because they provide ___________________ of our mental world. 3. Facts show that the more one uses one medium, the more likely one is _________________. 4. Factors that can cause us to expose ourselves to one source selectively _________ ______________. 5. One quite different sort of factor that affects our information and entertainment experiences is the ______________________.

An Unforgettable Lesson I've had quite a lot of lessons in my school life. Among them the one given by an American young man makes me unforgettable. It was on Tuesday morning in May. Our teacher told us all of sudden that an American would give an English lesson would give us an English lesson. Then in came a young man. He greeted us in English and then began his class. It was quite different form those we had before. During the whole class he taught us several English songs. Played games with us and helped us act out a dialogue. He neither taught us English grammar rules nor asked us to do lots of written exercises. He was not serious at all. He was always smiling at each of us. Happy time was always short. Before we know that the class was over. We took a photo with our American teacher in the classroom.

Directions: There are 3 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questio ns or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked [A], [B], [C] and [D]. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Shee t 2 with a single line through the centre. Passage One Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. For Roy Johnson, a senior magazine editor, the latest indignity came after a recent dinner at a fancy restaurant in the wealthy New York City suburb where he and his family live. First the parking valet handed him the keys to his Jaguar instead of fetching the car. Then an elderly white couple came out and handed him the keys to their black Mercedes-Benz. “It took them a while to realize that I was not a valet,” says Johnson. “It didn ’t matter that I was dressed for dinner and had paid a handsome price for the meal, just as he had. What mattered was that I didn ’t fit his idea of someone who could be equal to him.” Such incidents, which are depressingly familiar to African-Americans of all ages, incomes and social classes, help explain why black and white attitudes often differ so completely. A recent survey found that 68 percent of blacks believe racism is still a major problem in America. Only 38 percent of whites agreed. Many Americans find the gulf between blacks and whites bewildering. After all, official segregation(隔离) is a bad memory and 40 years of law, policies and court decisions have helped
