A Bag of Kindness

“Class, tomorrow I want you to bring a cup of macaroni(通心粉) for our craft class, OK?" These words from my teacher echoed(回响)in my mind all evening. I was afraid of the next day because I knew we had no macaroni at home. Living in an alcoholic(多酒精的) environment, we never had too much of anything except beer bottles.

I went home after school. Where could I find macaroni? I knew that the local bottle shop gave ten cents for a beer bottle, so I decided to sell some bottles to get money for macaroni.

I started collecting the bottles and put them in my wagon(大车). After selling those bottles, I earned eighty cents. Although I did my best, I still had no macaroni for my craft class.

"Weren?t you listening when I asked you to bring it, John?" my teacher asked.

I was embarrassed(尴尬). I didn?t know what to say and other children started laughing. Then a little girl, Rosalyn, who sat beside me, turned to me and said, "You can have some of mine.” She offered a bag of macaroni to me. The kindness in her eyes made me start to cry and I ran out of the room in shame.

I never took her macaroni or thanked her for her bag of kindness. However, I often think about Rosalyn and the way she turned to save me that day. Once, I spent a great deal of my life letting anger, hurt and shutting-out be around me. I kept kind people like Rosalyn away, but after that class, I changed my attitude. I thanked all the people like Rosalyn that made this world a better place to live in.

Young children don't have the skills or knowledge to stay safe in heavy traffic. The following tips(忠告)will be helpful for you to keep your children safe in heavy traffic. Children learn about road safety by watching others. Make sure that you always set good examples. Your children will follow you and think it's OK to do like you. Teach your children to pay attention to traffic lights when you cross the road together with them. This helps them understand when it's safe to cross. Make sure that you walk between your children and traffic, and hold their hands all the time. When your children are a little older, you can start to tell them the importance of traffic knowledge. Let them start to understand the reasons why they need to be so careful. Talk with them about road signs and traffic rules.

Ask your children to play in a safe place. Never let them ride bikes on the road without an adult present at rush hour.

The most important thing you can do to keep your children from getting hurt is to encourage them to follow traffic rules. After knowing about traffic rules, they'll volunteer to obey them. In this way, they'll be careful enough to keep themselves away from danger.

For several years, Americans have enjoyed teleshopping—watching TV and buying things by phone. Now teleshopping is starting in Europe. In a number of European countries, people can turn on their TVs and shop for clothes, food, toys, and many other things.

Teleshopping is becoming popular in Sweden(瑞典).The biggest Swedish company sells different kinds of things on TV in fifteen European countries, and in one year it made $100 million. In France there are two teleshopping channels(频道), and the French spend about $20 million a year buying things through those channels.

In Germany, until last year teleshopping was only possible on one channel for one hour every day. Then the government allowed more teleshopping. Other channels can open for telebusiness. German businesses are hoping this new teleshopping will help them sell more things.

Some people like teleshopping because it allows them to do shopping without leaving their homes. With all the problems of traffic in the cities, this is an important reason. But at the same time, other Europeans do not like this new way of shopping. They call teleshopping "junk(劣质货)on the air". Many Europeans usually worry about the quality(质量)of the things for sale on TV.

The need for high quality means that European teleshopping companies will have to be different from the American companies. They will have to be more careful about the quality of the things they sell. They will also have to work harder to sell things that the buyers cannot touch or see in person.

The Big Mac, the most famous hamburgr ien the world, had its 30 birthday in 1998. A Big Mac is a round piece of ground beef with pickle, ketchup and mayonnaise in a bun. That?s all. But as much as 1% of the world?s beef ends up in McDonald?s hamburgers.

How did the business start? Two brothers, Dick and Mac McDonald opened their first fast-food restaurant in 1940 in the USA. Their business quickly became successful, and the golden arches that they placed on the roof of their restaurants were soon a common sight all over the USA.

In 1955 they sold their business, which then grew and grew until it had reached 111 countries. Today there are over 23,000 restaurants and at one time a new one was opening somewhere in the world every three hours. Young people in the west know all about McDonald?s. They eat there and possibly their parents used to take them there for their birthday parties. However, there is not the only hamburger business that is doing well. Wendy?s and Burger King are two businesses that in the late 1990s were even more successful.

Tina, a 19-year-old, who is studying chemistry after leaving high school said, “It?s OK. The work is really simple. You cook the beef, prepare the hamburgers, cook the French fries and serve the customers. McDonald?s has a good training programme and the work is really easy to learn. The money?s not great. You get free meals, That?s good.” Also, you can work part-time there. Most of the restaurant staff work part-time.

I study during the day, when I?m most awake. Then I work at the restaurant three evenings a week when I?m tired and hungry. I finish work at about eleven thirty, which isn?t too late, eat something and then go home.”

ARE you part of the “Thumb Generation”?

The answer is clear –if you communicate by the use of cell phones and text messages, then yes, you are go in for an activity that has swept teenagers all over the world. According to the Nielsen Company, your American friends sent and received an average of 2,272 text messages a month, almost 80 messages a day.

When your thumb types quickly on your mobile, have you ever thought about why you are obsessed(缠住,迷住)with it?

Michael Hausauer, a psychotherapist (心理医生) in California, US, told the New York Times that teenagers had a “great interest in knowing what?s going on in the lives of their friend s”. For that reason, he said, the rapid rise in texting has possibility for great advantage and great harm. “Texting can be a huge tool,” he told the paper. “It offers friendship and the promise of connectedness. At the same time, texting can make a youngster feel overly exposed(无掩蔽的;暴露的).”

Text message may be an effective communication?s channel among teenagers, but according to Sherry Turkle, a psychologist who has studied teenage texting habits in Boston for three years, it might be causing a change in the way teenagers develop.

For one thing, adolescence(青春期) is the period when teenagers break free from their parents to grow into adults. “But if technology makes staying in touch very, very easy, that?s harder to do.” said Turkle.“Now you have teenagers who are texting their mothers 15 times a day, asking things like, …Should I get the red shoes or the blue shoes?? ”

She also believes a mobile that vibrates (振动) every couple of minutes makes it difficult to get any peace and quiet. And physically, thumbs are the most obvious victims (受害者). Too much texting could lead to short-term or lasting hurt to the thumbs.(330)

Doctor Seuss was born in 1904. By the middle 1950s, he had become one of the best-loved and most successful children?s book writers in the world. His books are very popular with young readers. They enjoy the invented words and the pictures of unusual funny animals and plants.

In 1954, life magazine published(刊登) a report about school children who could not read. The report said many children's books were not interesting. Doctor Seuss strongly hoped to help children and decided to write books that were interesting and easy to read. He used words with the same ending sound, like fish and wish. He did not receive training in art. Yet, he drew the pictures for most of his books.

In 1957, Dr. Seuss wrote The Cat in the Hat. He used less than 230 words to write the book and even a six-year-old should be able to read it. It was a fun story and easy to read. Children loved it. Their parents loved it, too. Today it is still one of the stories they like best. The success of The Cat in the Hat made him want to write more books for children. In 1960, he wrote a book using less than fifty words. The book is called Green Eggs and Ham.

In 1984, Doctor Seuss won a Pulitzer Prize He was honored for the education and enjoyment his books provided American children and their parents.

He died at the age of 87, but his influence remains. Millions of his books have been sold worldwide. People say his books helped change the way American children learned to read. Yet, his books are loved by people of all ages. Doctor Seuss once said, “I do not write for children. I write for people.”

Dear grandma,

How are you? I hope you are feeling well and your leg is improving. Can you walk a bit now? Is your neighbor, Mrs Lu, bringing you enough books to read? I hope so.

You?d love our school library, grandma. There are so many books for all kinds of subjects. The other day I found a book about electronic engineering. I couldn?t really understand it but I hope to learn more about this topic sometime. This term I have three new subject classes, so I thought I?d tell you about them.

I now study biology, which is really interesting. I?m learning all about the human body, where everything is and what it does. Do you know that we have a kissing muscle? It?s called …orbicularis?(轮匝肌)and it?s a circular muscle that closes your mouth and moves your lips forward. I love biology. It?s so interesting!

Another new subject is religion. I didn?t think I would like this one, but actually it is very interesting to hear about how different people worship(崇拜). We are learning about lots of religions from all over the world, not only Asia. Do you know about the religion on the island of Bali in Indonesia? They have a unique religion which is based on Hinduism but also has elements of Buddhism as well. It is called Bali Hindu Dharma. I am just learning more about it but it sounds fascinating.

My other new subject is Spanish. It?s really difficult to learn a new language but I know it will be useful for me in the future, if I want to travel the world. Spanish is one of the official languages of the European Union and the United Nations. I?ve learnt that Spanish is not only spoken in Europe but in South America, too. Countries like Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Mexico also speak Spanish. You know I?ve always wanted to go to Mexico, so if I can speak some Spanish it would be really useful.

Did you study these subjects when you were at school? I suppose subject choice changes over time, doesn?t it? I?ll come to visit you again in the next holiday, which I think is in eight weeks? time. I?ll bring you some of my new books if you like. I hope you can write back soon and tell me all the village news. I miss you very much.

Lots of love,

Sara

When so many people are struggling to earn a living, it?s refreshing to hear about a man who has found success through a very simple but unique idea. Jason Sadler, 26, wears a different T-shirt every day, and gets paid for doing so.

According to The New York Times, he was inspired by Million Dollar Homepage, a successful project in which a British man sold on million pixels( 塑像) on a website for $1 each.

Word has spread about Sadler?s creative idea. Many advertisers have begun to take notive. The major news press have done stories about him. Sadler?s success also rests on his experience as the chief marketing officer of the web design company Thought & Theory, with which he became very familiar with marketing.

At any rate, his efforts have paid off. He sold every T-shirt spot for 2009. And he made $84,795 from T-shirt ad sales and website ad sales. In 2010, he expanded his business by employing another T-shirt wearer on the West Coast, and doubled his price.
