A large garbage patch floating in the Pacific Ocean continues to grow and is now roughly twice the size of Texas, a new study has found.

In addition, the pollution levels in what is called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch are "increasing sharply," according to research published Thursday in the "Scientific Reports" journal.

There are 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic floating in the patch, and that number keeps rising, according to the new analysis.

The amount of garbage is up to 16 times higher than previously reported. The patch has now grown to more than 600,000 square miles —Texas is approximately 270,000 square miles, by comparison.

"We were surprised by the amount of large plastic objects we encountered," said Julia Reisser of the foundation, who contributed to the study. "We used to think most of the debris（碎片）consists of small fragments, but this new analysis shines a new light on the range of the debris."

China’s first space laboratory, Tiangong I, bade goodbye on the morning of April 2, 2018 as it re-entered Earth’s atmosphere before breaking apart in a fireball in the skies over the South Pacific Ocean.

In a statement posted online, the China Manned Space Agency said the results of analysis and tracking by the Beijing Aerospace Control Center and other Chinese space organizations showed

that re-entry took place at 8:15 am and that most of the spacecraft’s body burned up in the process. Remains may have crashed somewhere in the central part of the South Pacific, the agency said.

There were no reports of damage caused by the re-entry, Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said at a daily news briefing. He said China had been extremely responsible in handling the matter according to international treaties(条约) and norms(标准), and had shared information with the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs(UNOOSA) several times to ensure information transparency(透明度).

Normally, when defenceless spacecraft re-enters the atmosphere, outside parts such as the solar panels and antennas are the first victims of atmospheric drag. Then its main structure burns or explodes from increasing heat and friction. Most are reduced to ash and dissipate. Only a small amount of debris reaches the Earth’s surface.

The re-entry put an end to months of rumor surrounding the fate of Tiangong I, which contributed greatly to China’s ability to build a space station on its own.

It was launched by a Long March 2F carrier rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwestern China in September 2011. With a designated life span of two years, the spacecraft was in service for four and a half years before its retirement was announced by authorities in March 2016.

Leafy greens may keep your brain young

People who ate at least one serving of cooked kale, spinach or collards（甘蓝叶）a day had better preserved memory and thinking skills compared to those who never or rarely ate these vegetables, according to a recent study.

The difference between those who ate leafy greens and didn’t amount to being 11 years younger in terms of cognition（认知）.

“Adding a daily serving of green, leafy vegetables to your diet may be a simple way to improve your brain health,” said study author Martha Clare Morris, a nutrition ist at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.

Brain-friendly nutrients are believed to play a part in why collards stave off memory decline.

The research, published in the journal Neurology, involved 960 people with an average age of 81 and no sign of dementia(痴呆).

Participants completed a questionnaire about how often they ate certain foods and had their thinking and memory skills tested yearly during that time.

Of the foods involved in the questionnaire, green leafy vegetables were shown to have significant brain-protective powers.

It’s not clear why these vegetables improve the brain, but the vegetables are rich in a range of

nutrients and compounds including vitamin E and K, lutein, beta carotene and folate.

“They have different roles and different biological mechanisms(机制) to protect the brain,”Morris told NPR.

The researcher acknowledged that the study doesn’t prove that eating green leafy vegetables slows brain aging, it only shows an association. But the field of study is an important one.
