第二部分阅读理解(共三节,满分70分)

第一节(共15小题;每小题2 分,满分30分)

A

One afternoon last week, I saw three tearful children from my son’s school being comforted by teachers. That morning, my 11-year-old had stomach pains, retching (干呕) into a bowl. Talking to other mothers later, I heard about other children with stomachache or difficult sleeping the night before.

What caused so much pain? Sports day. Sports day might be necessary at a highly-competitive independent school, but not at a village primary school. For the children who can fly like the wind, sports day cause no problem. For those who are overweight or just not good at sport, it is a nightmare (噩梦). Even for those who enjoy running but fall halfway down the track in front of the entire school and their parents, it can prove a disease.

Why do we put our children through this annual suffering? Some may say competition is character building; or it’s taking part, not winning, that’s important; or that’s a tradition of school life. I just felt great pity for those children in tears or in pain.

Team games at the end of sports day produced some close races, wild enthusiasm, lots of shouting —and were fun to watch. More importantly, the children who were not so fast or quick at passing the ball were hidden a little from everyone’s eyes. Some of them also had the thrill of being on the winning side.

I wish that sports day could be abandoned and replaced with some other less competitive event. Perhaps an afternoon of team games, with a few races for those who want them, would be less stressful for the children and a lot more fun to watch.

21. What can we learn about the author’s son from Paragraph 1?

A. He talked with some mothers.

B. He suffered from stomachache.

C. He had difficulty in sleeping.

D. He comforted his classmates.

22. Sports day is still an annul event in this school probably because __________.

A. this is an independent school

B. it helps children lose weight

C. it is a tradition of the school

D. children enjoy watching sports

23. What does the author think about team games?

A. They should include more stressful races.

B. They are less fun for those who love running.

C. They should be abandoned at primary school.

D. They are acceptable to different children.

24. What is the author’s attitude towards sports day?

A. Positive.

B. Enthusiastic

C. Critical.

D. Ambiguous (含糊不清的).

Electric cars are dirty. In fact, not only are they dirty, they might even be more dirty than their gasoline-powered cousins.

People in California love to talk about “zero-emissions (排放) vehicles,” but people in California seem to be clueless about where electricity comes from. Power plants mostly use fire to make it.Aside from the few folks who have their roofs

covered with solar cells, we get our electricity from generators (发电机). Generators are fueled by something — usually coal, oil, but also by heat generated in nuclear power plants. There are a few wind farms and geothermal (地热的) plants as well, but by far we get electricity mainly by burning something.

In other words, those “zero-emissions” cars are likely coal-burning cars. It's just because the coal is burned somewhere else, so it looks clean. It is not. It’s as if the California greens are covering their eyes—“If I can’t see it, it’s not happening.” Gasoline is an unbelievably efficient way to power a vehicle; a gallon of gas has a lot of energy in it. But when you take that gas (or another fuel) and first use it to make electricity, you waste a nice part of that energy, mostly in the form of wasted heat—at the generator, through the transmission lines, etc.

A gallon of gas may propel your car 25 miles. But the electricity you get from that gallon of gas won’t get you nearly as far—so electric cars burn more fuel than gas-powered ones.If our electricity came mostly from nukes, or geothermal, or hydro, or solar, or wind, then an electric car truly would be clean. But for political, technical, and economic reasons, we don’t use much of those energy sources. In addition, electric cars’ batteries which are poisonou s for a long time will eventually end up in a landfill (垃圾) and finally, when cars are the polluters, the pollution is spread across all the roads. When it’s a power plant, though, all the junk is in one place. Nature is very good at cleaning up when things are not too concentrated, but it takes a lot longer when all the garbage is in one spot.

32. The underlined words “ be clueless” mean___________

A. feel excited

B. have confidence

C. be pleased

D. know nothing

33. The electricity we get from a gallon of gas may make our car run ________

A. not less than 25 miles

B. as far as 50 miles

C. not more than 25 miles

D. as far as 25 miles

34. According to the passage, electric cars__________

A. are more environmentally friendly

B. are poisonous for a long time

C. are very good at cleaning up

D. burn more fuel than gas-powered ones

35. What is the main idea of the passage?

A. Gasoline is an effective way to power a vehicle.

B. Electric cars are better than gasoline-powered ones.

C. People have doubts about electric cars’ batteries.

D. Electric cars are not clean at all.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Hollywood movies are regularly filled with sex and violence. They can be exciting films but sometimes all you want is a little light-hearted entertainment.

Have you heard of Bollywood? All singing, all dancing and unrealistic, it is the perfect alternative to normal Hollywood movies. Bollywood is the Indian film industry, based in Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay. 36 Yet Bollywood is the largest producer of films in the world. This year the Indian Filmgare Awards, Bollywood's Oscars, turn 50 years old.

The typical Bollywood movie usually has the following ingredients: a cup of romance, a tea-spoon of comedy, a dash of international sight-seeing, served with a huge slice of singing and dancing. There will also be one brave hero, one beautiful heroine and one baddie. 37

Bollywood films are full of ideal things and free of daily worries. 38 The actors change clothes and locations within a single song. But the audience don't mind. To Indian movie lovers, especially the poor, such films are a gateway to heaven and the stars are their gods. The films take them to a magical world away from their everyday troubles. The films tell them the impossible is possible and that true love conquers all.

39 Behind the beautiful scenes, Bollywood still emphasizes traditional family values. In most films, if two lovers want to break an arranged marriage, they can't just run away. They must win over their parents.

Bollywood is a decent refreshing replacement for those over-stimulating Hollywood films. 40 They will take you to a brighter, cheerier and more colorful world, where it's still cool to dance around a tree and sing a love song.

A. Bollywood has gradually won its reputation on the world stage.

B. Bollywood films are mostly comic romances with light-hearted incidental music.

C. The result is a fun-filled musical.

D. Bollywood pays great attention to traditional values.

E. So if you're tired of all that Hollywood actions, check out the following Bollywood films.

F. Most Chinese school kids have probably never seen an Indian film.

G. There is never any mention of politics, poverty or war.

作文范文:

I am a high school student from China. I quite agree with you that gifts should be worth time and energy if you want to send them to someone you love. It doesn’t matter whether it is expensive or not. What really matters is whether it comes from inner heart.

Years ago, I received a gift from a friend on my birthday, who is now living far away. It delighted me at the sight of it. It was a piece of paper cutting, a Chinese traditional art. With the gift,he included a letter, in which he told me that he had made the paper cutting himself. It took him several weeks to learn to make it. That’s why I value it more than any other gift I received that day.

Now, it is still hanging on the wall of my bedroom. Whenever I look at it, I couldn’t help thinking of my friend. However far away we are, we feel close to each other. So I think a gift full of love and effort is a true and most valuable one.

Analysts estimate the global hair product industry to be worth €22.6 billion, growing at a rate of up to seven percent a year. There seems to be no limit on what we’ll spend to avoid a bad hair day. But for devotees of an underground beauty movement, the secret lies in throwing away the shampoo, in fact all the hair products, for good. The “no—poo”method, which involves using natural substitutes or just water in place of shampoo and conditioner, is supported by several circles. Beauty insiders, including writers for women’s magazines and professional hairdressers, speak highly of how hair becomes thicker, fuller, softer and brighter. And environmentalists who are mindful of money feel great joy at the lack of chemicals in and on their bodies—not to mention the impact on their budgets. Now one devotee is hoping to take it mainstream. Lucy Aitken Read, whose book Happy Hair: The definitive guide to giving up shampoo was released last week, hasn’t used shampoo for two years and her glowing brown hair is visibly in perfect condition. For her, the motivation came after reading a study that claimed women put 515 chemicals on their bodies daily. “I initially thought ‘Ha! They didn’t research me!’,” Aitken Read says. “Then I looked at the back of my shampoo bottle and realized there were loads of chemical components I didn’t recognize in the slightest.” Strangely it’s oily hair that could benefit the most from giving up shampoo. The theory behind the “no—poo” method is that shampoo removes the hair from its natural oils, which causes the scalp (头皮) to generate more oils to replace them. This results in oil overload — oily hair—which
