There are various types of questions asked at a job interview. Most job interviews start with chit-chat type of

questions like "Did it take you long to get here?", "Did you find the place all right?", "Were you able to find (S3)

parking? " Most of these just require a "yes, no problem" type of (S4)response; you can elaborate if you wish.

However, ensure that you don't (S5)provide information that will give them a bad (S6)impression If you say

something like "It took me (S7)ages to get here. The traffic was so bad; I hate traveling to this side of town", it

would not do you good. (S8)If this is the place where you would be working, they would automatically be worried that you will be late for work everyday More questions will be asked to find out a bit more about

you. (S9)or they may be hypothetical questions starting with "What if...?". These are aimed at finding out how you

would handle a situation or at finding out your personal views in certain areas. Whenever answering a job

interview question, give as much information as you can. Tell them why, where, when and how. In other words

For example, during the SARS epidemic, there was a high (S2)demand for facial masks in several countries—and many entrepreneurs capitalized (S3) on this business idea.

A similar effect is also created by larger social (S4)trends. There is much more of a demand for homecare services for the (S5)elderly than what is currently being supplied. And the (S6)trend for pets to be treated as family members continues, creating demand for all kinds of (S7)pet-related services that didn't exist even 10 years ago.

(S8) Look at existing businesses and the products and services they offer, and then determine if there's a need for more of those products or services If there is, develop business ideas to fit the market gap.

Do you have any ideas for starting a business now? Write your business ideas down. Think about them for some time. (S9) Keep an open mind and continue to assess everything you read and hear from a business point of view You don't have to run with the first business idea you think of; you want to discover the idea that's best suited to your skills and desires. (S10) Dream, think, plan, and then you'll be ready to transform that business idea into the business you've always wanted Part3:

How can a teen be convinced to stop smoking—or persuaded never to take up the (S1) habit at all?

In 1994, 27.5% of teens used cigarettes, smokeless tobacco or cigars. In 2004, 36.4% (S5)did.

Teens have their own (S6) issues, their own pressures. What works for (S7)adult smokers may not work for adolescents. To survey the teens, the questions must be carefully phrased because " (S8) teens get turned off if you ask them a lot of direct question s”says April Roeseler, a health educator and chief of local programs for the Tob acco Control Section of the California Department of Health Services, which runs the California Smokers' Helpline. With teenagers, counselors aim to be more conversational.

(S9)The first phone call generally takes about 45 minutes, with discussion about why the teen began smoking and the extent of the habit In the next few weeks, the counselor sets up additional telephone appointments, with up to a total of eight sessions.

(S10)Now 260 teens who have participated in the program are being followed says Lester Brown, assistant professor of family and preventative medicine at the UC San Diego School of Medicine and the principal investigator for the project. Researchers want to see whether the teens who quit remain non-smokers.

"Things are looking promising," he says, but he could offer no success-rate figures.

It says smoking causes about (1)700,000 deaths/700000 deaths/seven hundred thousand deaths each year just in India. Most of the victims are men (2) under seventy years old/under 70 years old, and these men (3)lost about twenty years of life/lost about 20 years of life because of smoking.

Then in due course of time, the judge passed a decision (9) in favor of/in favour of the defendant. He thanked the lawyer for (10)the tip about the cigars, saying the little gift to the judge did (11)a bit of good. For questions S1-S3, complete the sentences with the information given in the passage and answer the questions on Answer Sheet 1. One of the best parts of university life is living away from home. You get freedom and the chance to meet new people. You are living away from home, planning your own routine and even cooking your own meals——and that means looking after your own money. At university, it’s all about the cash. Fees, student loans, rent, bills, overdraft (银行透支款)——you name it, you might have to pay for it. An important aspect of being at university is managing your own time. It’s up to you to decide when you’ll study, when you’ll go shopping and when you’ll have a night out. Sounds fantastic, doesn’t it? Of course, it is a good idea to organize your time with a weekly or monthly schedule. Remember, you can be as flexible with your time as you like, but you’ll always need to make sure you get out of bed for lectures, meet essay and project deadlines, and schedule in plenty of revision days before exams. After a hard day’s study, going out and having fun is what student life is all about. You can get involved in voluntary work and student representation activities and you could contribute and learn new skills with student magazine and r adio station. It’s the perfect way to make friends and add a bit of sparkle to you CV(个人简历). University life is about learning. You’ll be expected to go to all your lectures and classes. But on top of that, you are expected to do a number of hours of self-study. Every student has a personal tutor to help with any problems you might have or you can speak to your lecturers and other tutors if you have questions. If you plan you time and your workload, you’ll have plenty of free time to enjoy student life at university. Plus, getting a degree makes sense in the long run——graduates earn more and are more likely to get a job than people without a degree. 1.

Part II Reading Comprehension (30 %) Directions: There are four passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheetwith a single line through the center. Passage One Science is not a set of unquestionable results but a way of understanding the world around us. Its real work is slow. The scientific method , as many of us learned in school, is a gradual process that begins with a purpose or problem or question to be answered. It includes a list of materials, a procedure to follow, a set of observations to make and, finally, conclusions to reach. In medicine, when a new drug is proposed that might cure or control a disease, it is first tested on a large random group of people, and their reactions are then compared with those of another random group not given the drug. All reactions in both groups are carefully recorded and compared, and the drug is evaluated. All of this takes time and patience. It’s the result of course, that makes the best news—not the years of quiet work that characterize the bulk of scientific inquiry. After an experiment is concluded or an observation is made, the result continues to be examined critically. When it is submitted for publication, it goes to a group of the scientist’s colleagues, w ho review the work. Einstein was right when he said: “No amount of experimentation can ever prove me right, a single experiment can at any time prove me wrong.”
