A

Animals are more like us than we ever imagined . They feel pain, they experience stress, they show affection, excitement and love. All these findings have been made by scientists in recent years---and such results are beginning to change how we view animals.

Strangely enough, some of this research was sponsored by fast food companies like McDonald's and KFC. Pressured by animal rights groups, these companies felt they had to fund scientists researching the emotional and mental states of animals.

McDonald's, for instance, funded studies on pig behavior at Purdue University, Indiana. This research found that pigs seek affection and easily become depressed if left alone or prevented from playing with each other. If they become depressed, they soon become physically ill. Because of this, and other similar studies, the European Union has banned the use of isolating pig stalls from 2010. In Germany, the government is encouraging pig farmers to give each pig 20 seconds of human contact a day, and to provide them with toys to prevent them from fighting.

Other scientists have shown that animals think and behave like humans.

Koko, the 300--pound gorilla at the Gorilla Foundation in Northern California, for instance, has been taught sign language. Koko can now understand several thousand English words, more than many humans who speak English as a second language. On human IQ tests, she scores between 70 and 95.

Before such experiments, humans thought language skills were absent from the animal kingdom. Other myths are also being overturned, like the belief that animals lack self-awareness. Studies have also shown that animals mourn their dead, and that they play for pleasure.

These striking similarities between animal and human behavior have led some to ask a question: "If you believe in evolution, how can't you believe that animals have feelings that human beings have?"

3

Until recently, scientists believed that animals behaved by instinct and that what appeared to be learned behavior was merely genetically-programmed activity. But as Koko, the Gorilla shows, this is not the case. In fact, learning is passed from parent to offspring far more often than not in the animal kingdom.

So what implications does this knowledge have for humans? Because of this, should we ban hunting and animal testing? Should we close zoos? Such questions are being raised by many academics and politicians. Harvard and 25 other American law schools have introduced courses on animal rights. Germany, meanwhile, recently guarantee animal rights in its constitution--the first country to do so.

56. McDonald's and KFC give money to support scientists to do research on animals,

because ____.

A. they are international big companies.

B. they love animals.

C. they are pressured by animal right groups.

D. they earn a large amount of money and want to do some good deeds.

57. The research on pigs at Purdue University shows that ____.

A. pigs love being alone.

B. pigs easily become physically ill.

C. pigs need affection

D. pigs don't like to play with each other.

58. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A. Animals behave by instinct.

B. Animals have self-awareness.

C. Animals have feelings and love

D. Animals do not have language skills.

59. Should we in China ban hunting and animal testing?

A. Yes.

B. No

C. Not certain

D. Not mentioned

B

Stratford-on-Avon, as we all know, has only one industry--William Shakespeare--but there are two clearly separate and different branches. There is the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC),which presents excellent productions of the plays at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre on the Avon. And there are townsfolk who largely live on the tourists who come, not to see the play, but to look at Anne Hathaway's Cottage, Shakespeare's birthplace and the other sights.

The townsfolk of Stratford doubt that the theatre adds a penny to their income. They frankly dislike the RSC actors, those who walk with long hair and beard and great noise.

The tourist stream are not entirely separate. The sightseers, who come by bus and often take in Warwick on the side, don't usually see the plays. And some of them are even surprised to find a theatre in Stratford. However, the playgoers do manage a little sight-seeing along with their play-going. It is the playgoers, the RSC declares, who bring in much of the town's income because they spend the night ( some of them four or five nights) pouring money into hotels and restaurants. The sightseers can take in everything and get out of town by nightfall.

The townsfolk don't see it this way and local government does not put away some money for the RSC. Stratford cries poor traditionally. Nevertheless, every hotel in town seems to be adding a new wing or a cocktail room. Hilton is building its own hotel there, which you will be sure will be decorated with Hamburger bars, dinner rooms and so forth, and will be very expensive.

Anyway, the townsfolk can't understand why the RSC needs help from the government. The theatre has broken attendance records for three years in a row.

Last year, its 1,431 seats were 94 occupied all year long and this year they will do better. The reason, of course, is that costs have rocketed and ticket prices have stayed the same. It would be a shame to raise prices too much because it would drive away the young people who are Stratford's most attractive customers. They come entirely for the plays, not the sights. They all seem to look alike, though they come from all over.

60. From the first two paragraphs, we learn that______.

A. the townsfolk think little of the RSC 's contribution to the town's income

B. the actors of RSC imitate Shakespeare on and off stage

C. the two branches of the RSC are not on good terms

D. the townsfolk earn little from tourism

61. It can be inferred from the third paragraph that_____.

A. the sightseers cannot visit the castle and the palace separately

B. the playgoers seem to spend more money than the sightseers

C. the playgoers go to no other places in town than the theatre

D. the sightseers do no other things than shopping in town

62. By saying "Stratford Cries poor traditionally", the author means that ____.

A. Stratford has long been in financial difficulties

B. Stratford cannot afford the new projects

C. the town is not really short of money

4

D. the townsfolk used to be poorly paid

63. According to the townsfolk, the RSC deserves no help from the government

because ____.

A. the behavior of the actors is not socially acceptable

B. ticket prices can be raised to cover the spending

C. the company is financially ill-managed

D. the theatre attendance is on the rise

C

People go in for various kinds of physical training, and winter swimming is one of them.

We can have a cold wind bath, an icy water bath and a sunbath at the same time in the open air of winter.

When we have taken off our clothes and are exposed to the cold air, all parts of our body are stirred by the cold, making us eager to go into the water.

We dive into the cold water and swim. We come out just when our hands and feet are beginning to feel numb. The only thing we think about in the cold water is how to withstand the cold. At this moment our brain is relaxed and at rest. This improves our metabolic functions (促进...

After we get dried, our pink-colored skin is bathed in the winter sun rays. Gradually we no longer feel the cold and spring seems to be near....

After the "three baths" of air, water and sun, we feel warm, relaxed and comfortable.

Winter swimming is enjoyable and good for health. That is why it is becoming more popular than ever before.

water.

B. busy thinking

D

The Beijing government has set out to recruit thousands of university graduates to work as junior officials in rural areas to both improve rural administration and ease the city's employment problems.

The government plans to recruit 3,000 university graduates this year, 1,000 than last year, to work as assistants to village heads or Party secretaries in suburban

areas.

People interested in jobs in Beijing 's rural villages and townships can submit applications to the Beijing Municipal Personnel Bureau or online at www.

https://www.wendangku.net/doc/75955863.html, from February 1 through March 15.

"We hope university graduates will seize this opportunity to use their knowledge in rural villages and to start their careers," Sun Zhenyu, deputy director of Beijing Personnel Bureau, told Xinhua News Agency.

The government has promised successful candidates a monthly salary of 2,000 yuan ($ 250) in the first year, 2,500 yuan ($ 320) the second year and 3,000 yuan ($ 385) the third year, provided their performance is up to the required standards, Sun said.

Wang Lina, who graduated from Beijing Union University last year, was one of the first graduates to find work in the city's countryside. After majoring in industrial and commercial administration, Wang served as the assistant to the village head of Ertiaojie Village in suburban Beijing's Pinggu District. For one project, Wang contacted people at the Beijing Academy of Agricultural Sciences and arranged for the local farmers to receive training in strawberry planting. Her efforts paid off. The village had a plentiful harvest of organic strawberries earlier this year.

Nationwide, about 150,000 university graduates found employment in rural areas last year, according to figures provided by the Ministry of Education.

The ministry predicts that 4. 95 million students will graduate from universities

across the country this year, 820,000 more than last year. About 1. 4 million of them are unlikely to find jobs when they graduate.

In Beijing, a record 200,000 people are expected to graduate from

5

university this year. Less than half of them are expected to be offered jobs, according to the personnel bureau.

A. once you are hired as a junior official, you can get an endlessly rising salary

B. the government guarantee a relatively high salary for the successful candidates

C. working as junior officials is easy but very meaningful

D. the competition for the job as junior officials is very fierce

69. From the story of Wang Lina we can learn that ___.

A. the sooner you go to the countryside, the sooner you will be successful.

B. local farmers can get big harvests if they learn more knowledge.

C. university graduates can also realize their value in rural areas.

D. Wang had great difficulty in helping villagers planting organic strawberries.

70. The last two paragraphs aim to tell us that ____.

A. more and more graduates will work as junior officials

B. the universities should not have so many students

C. there are more and more graduates in recent years

D. it is not easy for graduates to find jobs nowadays

71. Which of the following can be the best title for this passage?

E

They start handing out the free food at 9:00 am, but the queue starts forming hours earlier. By dawn, there is a line of cars stretching for about one kilometer. This is the closest thing to a traffic jam that the small city of Logan, Ohio, and many

other places in the United States has. It is a traffic jam driven by poverty and hunger.

Outside, the US is regarded as the wealthiest and most powerful nation in the world, but back home it is being eaten away from the inside by persistent and rising poverty. About 3 million Americans have lost their jobs since George

W.

Bush took office in January 2001. They have yet to find new work in a largely jobless economic recovery. There is not much left to keep them from falling further.

Last year alone, another 1.7 million Americans slipped below the poverty line.

That brought the total to 34.6 million, or one in eight of the population. More than

13 million of them are children.

In fact, the US has the worst child poverty rate and the worst life expectancy(预期寿命) of all the world's industrialized countries. And the conditions of its poor are worsening.

Two years ago, about 31 million Americans were considered "food insecure" (they did not know where their next meal was coming from). Of those, more than 9 million were said by the Agriculture Department to be experiencing real hunger.

And that was before the recession really began to hit.

Partial surveys suggest the problem has got considerably worse since then. In 25 major cities, the need for emergency food rose an average of 19 percent last year.

72. From the first paragraph we know that_________.

A. everyone in America can get free food

B. free food is offered to drivers everywhere in America

C. poor people often cause traffic jams in America

D. people have to use cars even they haven't enough food

73. More American people are becoming poor because__________.

A. they don't love their president

B. they don't like their jobs

C. they can't get jobs

D. they spend too much on

their cars

74. From the passage we can conclude that _______.

A. America, in fact, is not a powerful nation

B. America has experienced different developing periods

C. America has the largest number of poor people

D. America has a large population of farmers

75. The author's attitude towards the situation of poverty in the U.S.A is_________.

A. angry

B. curious

C. worried

D. nervous

M: Wow, sounds like you're going to have a full day. Hey listen, why don't I come over later in the evening, and we can play a game or something?

W: Sounds good, but give me a call before you come. My mum might try to come up with something else for me to do.

8. W: Come on, David. Let's get ready for the ski trip.

M: Oh, well. I don't need to get ready. I can just take a few things, you know, a

ski jacket, a sweater, my ski boots. I don't need much.

W: You need more than that. How about gloves? And how about a hat?

You've

got a great yellow and black ski hat. Take that.

M: Oh, right. Okay. Where is my hat? Great. I found it. And here are my black

gloves. Ahhh.. here's my blue sweater. I'll take this too. What else?

Maybe I'll

take this...

W: David, our hotel has a swimming pool. Take a swimming suit. Your blue one.

M: Right, right. My blue swimming suit. Then, of course, I need to take my white

bathrobe.. Okay. I think I'm ready...Wait. I guess I'll take my black shit, too.

And this white shirt and my red tie. So we can go out at night.

W: I thought you only needed a ski jacket, a sweater, and a pair of a ski boots...

8

M: No, actually, what I need is a bigger suitcase, I think I'll take an extra pair

of jeans, and maybe a few more shirts ...

W: David!

9. W: Hey Taxi! Ah great. Thanks for pulling over.

M: Where to?

W: Well, I'm going to the National Museum of Art, and ...

M: Sure. Get in. No problem. Hang on!

M: Uh, Excuse me. How long does it take to get there?

M: Well, that all depends on the traffic, but it shouldn't take more than

twenty

minutes.

W: Okay. Uh, sorry for asking, but do you have any idea how much it will

be?

M: Oh, it shouldn't be more than 18 dollars...not in including a..uh—hum..a

tip

of course.

W: Oh, and by the way, do you know what time the museum closes?

M: Well, I would guess around 6 o'clock.

W: Uh, do you have the time?

M: Yeah. It's half past four.

W: Thanks.

10. Good afternoon, everyone. My name is Richard Parry and I'm the school director. I do hope you all had a good journey, although I'm sure you must be

feeling rather tired. No doubt you are looking forward to meeting the families

you're going to be staying with during the next month. Now, please listen carefully to the following arrangements as the various families are waiting in groups to met you.

If your surname—your family name that is—begins with the letter A to F,

your host family will be waiting for you in this hall. At the end of the meeting,

you should wait behind in here. Now, for those of you whose names beginning

with G to L—you should go downstairs, not upstairs, but downstairs to the

dining room. When you get there, make sure you go to the far end of the room by

the drinks machine. That's important as people whose names begin with a letter

from M to R should also go downstairs and wait at the opposite end of the dining

room near the doors into the garden. And the final group—those of you with names from S to Z, must go out of this hall, past the office to the car park—where the bus stopped when you arrived all right?--out to where the cars

are parked by the main gate and your families will be waiting there.

With the sharp rise of the cost of college education, students have a few

ways to pay their college education tuition. Many students just let their parents pay

the tuition. Some students may apply for a bank loan and others will try to find

part-time jobs both on and out of campus. Apart from this, many good students will

try to win a scholarship. In this way, they can pay at least part of their tuition.

As to me, I will let my parents pay half of my tuition because they are not

rich enough. Besides my studies, I will take up a part-time job as a tutor, teaching

some high school students maths, physics and English, as I'm very good at these subjects. Of course, I will work very hard at my lessons so that I can win a scholarship. I think that's enough to pay for my college education.

Bill was in the kitchen cooking. Looking at the messy kitchen, I shouted, “Why do you have to be so messy?” Bill looked hurt, “What?” I sighed and left for the airport. On my last flight, an elderly couple had the seats in my section. They held hands during takeoff. Later I caught them looking into each other’S eyes. Something about that look was familiar. Then I realized: it was the look Bill and I had worn in our wedding photographs.

(4)in that 35 1 which 33 1 whichever 30 1 where 28 1 交际用语如何应答21 1 其中22、27、35的错误率较高。
