Man’s first real invention, and one of the most important inventions in history, was the wheel.all transportation and every machine in the world depend on it. The wheel is the simplest yet perhaps the most remarkable of all inventions , because there are no wheels in nature---no living thing was ever created with wheels. 轮子是最简单的,但也许是所有发明中最引人注目的,因为自然界中没有轮子,没有轮子,也没有活的东西。However, then, did man come to invent the wheel?

Perhaps some early hunters found that they could roll an animal through the forest

on logs more easily than they could carry it. However, the logs themselves weighed a lot.

It must have taken a great prehistoric thinker to imagine two thin slices of log connected at their centers by a strong stick. This would roll along just as the logs did yet be much lighter and easier to handle . Thus the wheel and axle came into being, and with them the first carts.

Passage3

Many young people want to be pop-stars. It is their great ambition in life. They think: Pop-stars earn a lot of money; they lead interesting and exciting lives; thousands of fans admire them; they become famous;...!

Yes, but first they must become stars. Most stars start life with a group. But there are many groups and competition is hard. Groups appear and disappear almost overnight. Only a small number survive. Almost without exception they have to work very hard before they reach the top.

And very few reach the top-and stay there. In England there are perhaps thirty or so groups at the top. Most of these do not earn much money: perhaps 500 pounds each time they perform. What is more they have quite a lot of expenses. They have to pay a manager for example. He is the key person in their lives and he takes about 20% of their earnings----perhaps more. Then there are their clothes, their instruments and their van.

And don’t forget, they have to travel a great deal –some times 2,000 miles in one week. At times they even sleep in their van instead of a hotel, just to save money.有时他们甚至睡在他们的车,而不是一个酒店,只是为了节省金钱。

So now , what do you think? Are pop-stars so rich ?And do they have such great lives?

Computers may one day turn night into day---with good old ,natural sunlight. Colossal compuer-controlled mirrors,,thousands of feet across, may one day orbit the earth ,reflecting sunlight onto a darkened United Stated.

Some scientists say that 16 of these mirrors, each about half a mile across, could aim their reflected light at one area on the earth that was about 200 miles by 3oo miles. That much light would equal about 56 moons.

The aluminum-coated(涂铝的), plastic mirrors could be folded up and packed into a spaceship, according to the scientists. Once released a few hundred miles in space, the mirrors, powered by a solar-powered engine, could make the rest of the trip into space on their own.

The scientists say the compuer-controlled mirrors could also be made to tilt( 倾倒) slowly , so the reflected sunlight would sweep slowly along the surface of the earth. For example, as night fel, the mirrors could be tilt to light up Boston. Later as darkness spread slowly westward. Chicago, for example, then San Francisco could be lit up. The reflected sunlight would allow these cities to save up electricity. And in emergencies, such as power-failures, the mirrors could light the affected area.

What no one knows yet is what effect this artificial daytime would have on plants, animals, and humans.没有人知道这是什么样的效果,这是什么样的影响,这是什么样的人工白天会有植物,动物,和人类。 Would it confuse some animals and harm some plants that are used to the day-night circles? Passage 3

Among all the changes resulting from the massive entry of women into the work force, the transformation that has occurred in the women themselves is not the least important. They see themselves in a new light, for they have discovered that they can do just as well as men in any profession. Some of them have gone to the top, which has given women pride and self-confidence. Of course, the picture is not perfect. In the first place, a very large number of women do not even try to enter “male” professions because they lack the necessary training or because they are not bold enough to take risks on new paths. For one women executive or one women judge, there are still countless typists and saleswomen who struggle through their day without any sense of victory . Besides , many of their braver sisters, who are daring to compete with men in higher field, find that male opposition is still strong , and that society is still ready to explain a woman’s success by reasons that have nothing to do with her intelligence. Still, the fact that women are now free to enter any career that attracts them; the situation has improved, and the tide is not likely to turn back.还有,事实上,妇女现在可以自由地进入任何吸引他们的职业,形势有所好转,而这一潮流是不可能回头的。

11.The changes in the women have been brought about by ____.

12.According to the author, “the picture is not perfect” because _____.

D.all of the above

13. Only a small number of women have entered “male’ professions because _____.

15. The author’s attitude about women’s situation can be described as _____ .

C. optimistic

Passage 4

A third of Britons are overweight, states a report published in January by the royal College of Physicians, the result of an 18-month-long study. About five percent

of children weigh too much, and are likely to stay that way for life; in the mid-twenties age group the proportion of fat people rises to a third, and of the middle-aged population half are overweight.

Fat people risk severe health problems, says the report, including high blood pressure, breathlessness , and various forms of heart disease. Smoking is particularly risky for overweight people.

The safest way to lose weight is to eat cereals(谷物),bread, fruit and vegetables, and cut down on fatty meats, butter and sweet foods. 减肥的最安全的办法是吃谷物(谷物),面包,水果和蔬菜,并减少脂肪的肉类,黄油和甜的食物。Fad(目前时行的) diets do far more harm than good slimming machines that vibrate muscles have not been proved useful; saunas(蒸气浴) merely remove a little body water, and health farms, says the report, serve as expensive holidays.

Exercises is most important to health, the report emphasizes; though it doesn’t necessary reduce weight, it maintains the correct proportion of body fat to body muscle. And it isn’t only for the young; from middle age a minimum of 20 minutes of gentle physical jerks should be practiced three times a week.

The report advocates several public health measures to combat the high prevalence of overweight in this country. They include an increase of tax on alcohol to reduce its increasing, and dangerously fattening, consumption; and the provision of more sports facilities by local authorities.

Britain’s doctors, the report concludes, must learn to be more sympathetic and specific in their advice to the overweight, encouraging a change in eating habits on a long-term basis, and taking into account the many---- often complex----reasons why fat people are fat.

16.The passage mainly talks about _____.

C.Briton’s overweight problem

成人本科学士学位英语考试_附答案

成人本科学士学位英语考试_附答案 Part I Reading Comprehension (30%) Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. Passage 1 Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage: Is that 6 a.m. workout getting in the way of good sleep? Don ' t think your fat cells won't notice. A new study published in The Annals of Internal Medicine (a medical journal) finds that inadequate shut-eye has a harmful effect on fat calls, reducing their ability to respond to insulin ( 胰岛素) by about 30 percent. Over the long-term ,this decreased response could set-the stage for type-2 diabetes (a medical condition in which someone has too much sugar in his or her blood), f atty liver disease and weight gain . The study adds to a growing body of evidence that there 's“ an intimate relationship between the amount of sleep we get and our ability to maintain a good ,healthy body weight ” says sleep expert Helene Emsellem ,director of the Center for Sleep and Wake Disorders in Chevy Chase ,Maryland. (76) But Americans don ' t seem to be getting the message that we need seven to nine hours per night. More than 1 in 5 of us ,according to a report form the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ,is getting six or fewer hours of sleep per night ,on average. So how did researchers study fat cells in the Annals paper? Matthew Brady of the University of Chicago and a group of colleagues selected and persuaded seven volunteers to take part in the research project. They were all young ,thin and healthy and agreed to sleep for eight nights in a sleep lab. “ For four nights they were allowed to stay in bed for 8.5 hours a night ,” says Brady. Then ,a month later ,they came back for four additional nights —but this time they were allowed just 4.5 hours of sleep per night. And after each visit ,researchers got a sample of their fat.(77) Brady explains that the fat cells responded significantly to the loss of sleep. “ I was very surprised to be honest ,” he says. Bad things can happen when fat cells become less responsive to insulin. “ Fat cells are actually your friend ,”he says. “They 're there to store lipids( 血脂).” When lipids stay inside the cells ,your body can utilize the fat when you ' re exercising or sleeping or going about your day. “ However ,when fat cells start to become insulin resistant ,the lipids start to leach out of the fat cells and rise in the bloodstream ,” Brady says. 1.According to the passage ,lack of the sleep for a long while can probably lead to all of the following EXCEPT ______ . 第一段最后一句 A.heart disease B. weight gain C. diabetes D. liver disease 2.The main idea of the third paragraph is . 第一句 A.how to write a medical research paper B. how to avoid sleep loss C. how the research was conducted D. how to conduct a medical experiment 3.What does the word “ leach ” in the last paragraph probably mean? A.Leap B. Lead. C. Lead. D. Leak . 泄露
