The fun run event is part fitness program being run at Clara College to improve the health of children at the school. The event began on the playground, went into a park at the back of the school, and finished under trees near the school office block. Late in the race, Jai Smith, a student at the school, fell down because of a rock. “I was just running as fast as I could even while I was passing the finishing line, and just fell over the rock,” Jai told our reporter Jack. A teacher at the scene (现场) said, “We had checked the whole racing course for the run just before the gun went off. It looks like a rock was put there just after we checked.” Young Jai had a good chance of winning before he was hurt,” he said.

A pair of ladies' gloves rests at the bottom of my dresser drawer (抽屉). The gloves are old and worn, and tell many tales.

They belonged to my grandmother.

A cousin said she had found many Grandma's gloves and asked if I would like a pair.

When the packet arrived, I pulled the gloves out of the plastic in which they came from the department store.

They're small, but so was my grandma-small but strong. She was a woman who needed strong hands for cooking dinner and cleaning wooden floors. Being gentle wasn't all that useful for raising nine children, or feeding a hungry group of workers from the field of her farm.

There was a time when all the women wore gloves when they went out. Gloves were part of the dress code (着装标准) of the day-they're everywhere in our old black and white photos.

The gloves in my drawer put a lovely cover on the hands that fed the homeless people who walked through the countryside during the hard time and appeared at my grandma's kitchen door from time to time.

They were the same hands that bid farewell to (告别) two sons going off to war and held the flag presented in memory of the one who didn't return home.

Grandma was a mighty woman The story goes that she drove a young man whom she considered an unsuitable suitor (求婚者) for one of her daughters away with nothing but her hands and a broom (扫帚). He later became a son-in-law.

Still in shock! I moved around the house purposelessly trying to decide what to put into the suitcases (行李箱). Earlier that evening, I’d received a call telling me that my brother was killed in a car crash. “Come as soon as you can.” cried my mother.

I wanted to hurry to her at once. But my husband, Larry, and I were packing to move from New York to Seattle. Our house was in total mess. Supper dishes sat on the kitchen table. Toys lay everywhere. I purposelessly picked things up and put them down. Mother’s crying went through my head again and again.

Larry called some friends to tell them what had happened. Someone asked to speak to me. “If there’s anything I can do, let me know.” But I didn’t know what to ask for.

Suddenly, the doorbell rang. It was Emerson. He and his wife Donna lived in the block nearby. “I’ve come to clean your shoes,” he said.

I asked him to repeat.

“Donna had to stay with the baby,”he said, “but we want to help you. I remember when my father died, it took me hours to clean our shoes for the funeral (葬礼). Give me all your shoes.”

I gathered all our dirty shoes to the kitchen. Emerson got to work right away. Watching him devoting himself to one task helped me pull my own thoughts into order. I told myself to wash clothes first. Then, Larry and I bathed the children and put them to bed. One job after another.

When we returned to clear the dishes, Emerson had left. All our shoes stood in a line against the wall, clean, shining.

I couldn’t help crying. Early next morning, we left for the airport with all the jobs done.
