Unit One

Living in Harmony

Look around you. The world in which we live often seems filled with hate created by fear, misunderstanding, and selfishness. We fight with each other; we make war over resources and we desire to have power over others.

But there is no good reason to hate. Your neighbours may be of a different colour; they may follow a different religion; or they may have a different culture, but they are still human; they are still worthy of respect. We all live in the same world; we should aim to treat each other as brothers and sisters.

Look at your own family. Home is where we find happiness and rest. All things go well in a house if the family members are in harmony, and such a family will be filled with love and vitality. As it is said, "Better a meal of vegetables where there is love than a meal of delicious beef with hate." Thus, we must first love the members of our family. How can we love others if we do not love our own family members?

we can find more than enough reasons to live in harmony with each other. If all people can live in peace, harmony and love, then we can work together to create a better world for all of us.

Unit Two

They Also Value Their Lives

One day, some Americans working in Africa decided to go hunting for wild animals. They

stopped at a village to hire some local men to act as guides. This village was very poor. The houses were made of mud and there was no electricity or running water. The streets were dirty and the whole village smelled badly. The men wore dirty clothes. The women covered their faces, and the children had runny noses and were dressed in rags. But the local people looked happy and seemed to be enjoying what they were doing.

Seeing this, one American said, "This place is terrible. These people live just like animals." A young American officer added, "Yeah, they have nothing to live for; they may as well be dead."

But just then, an old American officer spoke up. He was a quiet man. In fact, he looked just one of the local men in the village. he looked at the young American and said, "You think they have nothing to live for, do you? well, if you are sure, why don't you take your knife, and try to kill one of them?"

There was dead silence in the truck. His words had silenced the negative talk about the local people.

The old officer went on to say, "I don't know either why they value their lives so much. Maybe it's those kids in rags, or the women they love, or the freedom they enjoy, or the work they like. But whatever it is, they care about their lives and the lives of their loved ones, just the same awe do."

Unit Three

Follow Your Dream

One day in a high school, a senior named Monty Roberts was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up.

Monty Roberts was the son of a horse trainer. He loved horses. That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday owning a large horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in a great detail and he even drew a picture of a 200-acre ranch.

He put a great deal of his heart into the dream ranch and the next day he handed the paper in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. He got a large red F for his paper.

He went to ask the teacher why. The teacher said, "The dream is impossible for you. You have no money.

Owning a horse ranch needs a lot of money. You have to buy the land, the house, and the machines for your ranch. There is no way you could ever do it." Then the teacher added, "If you will write this paper again with a more realistic goal, i will reconsider your grade."

The boy went home and thought about it long and hard. He asked his father what he should do. His father said, "Look, son, you have to make up your own mind on this. However, I think it is a very important decision for you."

Finally, after sitting with if for a week, the boy turned in the same paper, making no changes at all. He

said to the teacher, "You can keep the F and i will keep my dream. I will follow my heart, no matter what happens."

Now years have passed. This young man's dream has finally come true. He is the owner of a large horse ranch.

Unit Four

Attitude Is Everything

Micheal was a natural optimist. He was always in a good mood, always up and always had sth positive to say.

If an employee was having a bad day, Micheal was there telling the employee to look on the positive side of the situation. Seeing his optimism really make me curious, so one day i went up to Micheal and asked him, "I don't get it. You can't be positive all the time. How do you do it?"

Micheal replied, "Each morning I wake up and say to myself: Mike, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or you can choose to be in a bad mood. I choose to be in a good mood. Each time sth bad happens, I choose to be a victim or choose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it. Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept the complaining or I can point out the positive side of life, I always choose the positive side of life."

"Yeah, right. But it isn't that easy." I said.

"Yes, it is easy," he said. "Life is all about choices. Every situation in life is a choice. You choose how you react to situations; you choose how people will affect your mood; You choose how you feel. the bottom line is: It's your choice how you live your life."

From Mike I have learned that everyday we have a choice to live fully. So I will chose to be an optimist I may feel better, enjoy life more, and maybe have more chances of success.

Unit Five

Moral Values in American

Moral values are the foundation of American culture.

One of the most basic moral values for Americans is honesty. The well-known story about “Honest Abe” teaches this value clearly. While working in a store, young Abraham Lincoln once sold to a woman some goods to the amount of two dollars, six and a quarter cents. He discovered later that a mistake had been made, and that the store owed the woman the six and a quarter cents. After he had closed the store that night, he walked several miles in the darkness to return the small amount of money to her. Sometimes American honesty—being open and direct—can hurt people’s feelings. But Americans still believe that honesty is the best policy.

Another virtue Americans respect is perseverance. Remember the story about the turtle and the rabbit that had a race? The rabbit thought he could win easily, so he took a brief sleep. But the turtle finally won because he did not give up. When Americans have a hard time trying to do something, they are always encouraged to say, “I think I can; I think I can.”

Compassion may be the queen of American virtues. The story of the Good Samaritan describes a man who showed compassion. On his way to a certain city, a Samaritan man found a poor traveler lying on the road. The traveler had been beaten and robbed. The kind Samaritan, instead of just passing by, stooped to help this person in need.

In no way can this brief description cover all the moral values honored by Americans. Courage, responsibility, loyalty, and many others are also honored. Moral values are very important in American culture—and indeed, in any culture.

Unit Six

Creativity Is the Essence of Life and Nature

Creativity is the essence of life and nature. The world itself is in a constant act of creation. So we human beings should ask ourselves--why, in such a creative world, do some people sometimes appear to be stupid, dull, and uncreative? --Are people really dull? or are we all, in fact, creative?

To answer this, let's look at a baby. The whole essence of a baby is creative--it is creative in learning to walk, talk, sing, and play. Just imagine, a child can create a world of its own imagination and play with it for hours. A scientist who creates a theory is just like that--it is a play of ideas within the mind. It is hard to stop creativity in a young child. You can't make your child creative. It simply is creative.

Then, how can our children be still more creative? I would suggest that the first step is to allow ourselves to be creative. If we ourselves are creative, we can guide our children in a way that is free and unconditioned.

We should give our children a free and safe surrounding for them to explore, make mistakes and create. If we know a better way to do things, we should guide or "help" the child.

Unit Seven

Be a Team Player

If you really wish to succeed in life, it is very important to be a team player. For example, in a basketball game, Micheal Jordan is a great player, but he still has to cooperate well with his team members to win a game, because every member of his team has a very specific role and every member of the team is vital to the success of the team. If one player does not play well. The team will lose the game.

Of course, the concept of the teamwork applies to more than just sports. In the workplace and in school, working together is also an important element for success. In the workplace, it is important to be thought of as a team player, for no one person can build a railroad or manage an airl ine. In today’s world most companies are using team concepts to run their business.

Success in college can also depend on teamwork. Lab work and group projects are just some of the experiences requiring good cooperation with others.

Human beings are social creatures. Like it or not, we are all team players.

Unit Eight

Carrots, Eggs and Coffee Beans

A daughter complained to her father about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up.

Her father, a cook, took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. When the water came to a boil, he placed carrots in one of them, eggs in the second pot, and coffee beans in the third. His daughter waited impatiently and wondered what he was doing. In about twenty minutes he took out the boiled carrots and eggs and placed them in two different bowels. Then he poured her a cup of coffee.

He turned to his daughter, and asked her, “What do you see?”

“Carrots, eggs, and coffee,” she replied and asked, “What does it mean, Father?”

He explained that the carrots, eggs and coffee beans each had faced the same adversity, boiling water, but each reacted differently. The carrots went in strong and hard but came out softened and weak. The eggs had been weak. But after being boiled their inside became hardened. The coffee beans were unique, however. After they boiled in the boiling water, they had made the water taste better.

Then the father asked his daughter, “W hen adversity knocks on your door, how do you react? When life isn’t turning out quite the way you expected, you have a choice to make. Which will you bee—a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean? If you are like the coffee bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and make things better around you.”

现代大学英语精读book4-unit6课文

Book 4-Unit 5 Text A The Telephone Anwar F. Accawi 1.When I was growing up in Magdaluna, a small Lebanese village in the terraced, rocky mountains east of Sidon, time didn't mean much to anybody, except maybe to those who were dying. In those days, there was no real need for a calendar or a watch to keep track of the hours, days, months, and years. We knew what to do and when to do it, just as the Iraqi geese knew when to fly north, driven by the hot wind that blew in from the desert. The only timepiece we had need of then was the sun. It rose and set, and the seasons rolled by and we sowed seed and harvested and ate and played and married our cousins and had babies who got whooping cough and chickenpox—and those children who survived grew up and married their cousins and had babies who got whooping cough and chickenpox. We lived and loved and toiled and died without ever needing to know what year it was, or even the time of day. 2.It wasn't that we had no system for keeping track of time and of the important events in our lives. But ours was a natural or, rather, a divine—calendar, because it was framed by acts of God: earthquakes and droughts and floods and locusts and pestilences. Simple as our calendar was, it worked just fine for us. 3.Take, for example, the birth date of Teta Im Khalil, the oldest woman in Magdaluna and all the surrounding villages. When I asked Grandma, "How old is Teta Im Khalil" 4.Grandma had to think for a moment; then she said, "I've been told that Teta was born shortly after the big snow that caused the roof on the mayor's house to cave in."

Unit1 Another School Year — What For Let me tell you one of the earliest disasters in my career as a teacher. It was January of 1940 and I was fresh out of graduate school starting my first semester at the University of Kansas City. Part of the student body was a beanpole with hair on top who came into my class, sat down, folded his arms, and looked at me as if to say "All right, teach me something." Two weeks later we started Hamlet. Three weeks later he came into my office with his hands on his hips. "Look," he said, "I came here to be a pharmacist. Why do I have to read this stuff" And not having a book of his own to point to, he pointed to mine which was lying on the desk. New as I was to the faculty, I could have told this specimen a number of things. I could have pointed out that he had enrolled, not in a drugstore-mechanics school, but in a college and that at the end of his course meant to reach for a scroll that read Bachelor of Science. It would not read: Qualified Pill-Grinding Technician. It would certify that he had specialized in pharmacy, but it would further certify that he had been exposed to some of the ideas mankind has generated within its history. That is to say, he had not entered a technical training school but a university and in universities students enroll for both training and education.

My father’s government job demanded that he go overseas every few years, so I was used to wrenching myself away from friends. 2. We rented an 18th-century farmhouse in Berkshire. Nearby were ancient castles and churches. Loving nature, however, I was most delighted by the endless patchwork of farms and woodland that surrounded our house. In the deep woods that verged against our back fence, a network of paths led almost everywhere, and pheasants rocketed off into the dense laurels ahead as you walked. 3. I spent most of my time roaming the woods and fields alone, playing Robin Hood, daydreaming, collecting bugs and bird-watching. It was heaven for a boy —but a lonely heaven. Keeping to myself was my way of not forming attachments that I would only have to abandon
