A forest fire that burned 55 square kilometres was finally brought under control on Wednesday morning. The fire started on Sunday in Black Bear State Park and quickly spread to nearby areas.

On Monday, police evacuated(疏散) the small town of Lawson and ordered the people to leave their homes. The fire destroyed 20 homes in the area and caused heavy damage(损坏) to 40 others.

Nobody was hurt. Officials said the damage to homes and cars was between $l million and $2 million. The government declared the town a disaster(灾难) area. As with facial(面部) expressions, people everywhere use hand gestures(手势) to communicate(交流). Around the world, these have different meanings. A friendly hand gesture used in one culture might be unfamiliar or even rude in another.

Gestures for “hello” and “good-bye” differ around the world. In North and South America, and many parts of Europe, people often shake hands to greet others—especially in business. In North America, men and women shake hands firmly. This shows respect for the other person. In many Asian countries, it is often more common to nod the head once, or bow(鞠躬) when meeting for the first time.

To gesture good-bye in North America, many people wave one of their hands from left to right many times quickly. Americans also do this to greet someone in a friendly, casual way. In many Asian countries, this gesture often means “no”.

In many countries, to gesture that something is “okay” it is common to join the thumb(拇指) and forefinger together to make a circle, with the other three fingers standing up. In Brazil this gesture is very rude. In some countries, like France, it means “zero”.

In the Unites States, it is common to beckon(召唤) a person to you by raising your hand with the palm facing you, and moving the forefinger from one side to another. This gesture is considered rude in some countries, so more often people will hold their hand with the palm facing down, and move the whole hand from one side to another.

Hand gestures, like facial expressions, communicate important messages. When traveling or meeting someone from another country, be careful how you use them.

62. Do hand gestures have the same meanings in different countries?

63. How many gestures for greeting are mentioned(提及) in the passage?

64. What?s the meanings of “waving one?s hand from left to right” in many Asian

countries?

65. What does “forefinger” mean in Chinese?

66. What do you think of hand gestures?

There are many special hotels around the world. In Greenland, there is a hotel made out of ice, open between December and April every year. In Turkey, there is a cave hotel with a television, furniture, and a bathroom in each room. And in Bolivia, there is the Salt Palace Hotel.

Thousands of years ago, the area around the Salt Palace Hotel was a large lake. But over time, all the water disappeared. Today, the area has only two small lakes and two salt deserts.

The larger of the two deserts, the Uyuni salt desert, is 12,000 square kilometres. During the day, the desert is bright white because of the salt. There are no roads across the Uyuni desert, so local people must show guests the way to the hotel.

In the early 1990s, a man named Juan Quesada built the hotel. He cut big blocks of

salt from the desert and used the blocks to build it. Everything in the hotel is made out of salt—the walls, the roof, the table s, the chairs, the beds, and the hotel?s bar.

The sun heats the walls and roof during the day. At night the desert is very cold, but the rooms stay warm. The hotel has twelve rooms. A single room costs $40 a night, and a double room costs $60.

Who's building the new China? It's not the factory owners or the business men and women of China. It's someone else. It's the people who have left their homes to follow their dreams, the dream of a better life.

We see them every day, on every street corner, on every construction site(建筑工地)in cities. They work day and night in the terrible working conditions and weather. They build the roads, the theaters, the cinemas, and the supermarkets. They even clean up our rubbish. They are China?s migrant workers(民工). Young and old, these men and women are building the new China from the ground up.

More than 140 million workers have left their homes in the countryside to look for jobs in big cities all over China. They hope to be rich, but they realize they have many difficulties in making enough money for their family. And the biggest difficulty that these workers have is the pride and discrimination ( 歧视) from the people in cities. When night falls, everywhere I look I see the sad faces of the migrant workers. We can see them playing cards along the streets. Many are living far away from those whom they love. I can sometimes feel their pain(痛), knowing exactly what it feels like to live so far away from home in a city where they walk a different walk and talk a different talk. Yes, they dress differently, they speak differently, and they have different habits, but they work hard to make money. The people in cities consider them as outsiders, and some local governments refuse to give them medical care and public schooling for their children.

If China hopes to move into the future, many things need to be changed. The first

is discrimination! We need to stop our discrimination against the migrant workers of China! They may not make as much money as some people in cities, they may not have everything we have, but they are good honest people just trying to survive this game of life. These workers are very important to China's economic (经济的) development and have become an important force ( 力量) for the change of Chinese society. They are building the new China, so we should lend our hands and help them.

Advertisements are an important part of our lives. We are so used to them that we often do not even realize how many we see and hear in a day!

What is an advertisement?

An advertisement provides information and uses creative languages and attractive pictures to encourage people to buy a product(产品)or service or believe in an idea. Newspapers, magazines, the Internet, radios and televisions are the most places to find advertisem ents. There are two main types of advertisements―commercial advertisements and public service advertisements (PSAs). A commercial advertisement is one which someone has paid for to promote (提升) a product or service. PSAs are often placed for free, and are used to educate people about health, safety, or any other issue which affects public welfare(公共福利).

Does an advertisement tell people the complete truth?

China has strong laws to protect people from advertisements that lie or try to make people believe untrue promises about products or services. However, we still must be careful with the methods(方法) used in advertisements to try and sell us things. Even if an ad does not lie, it does not mean it tells you the complete truth. One toothpaste ad says 'Bright-teeth fights bad breath!' The advertisers want you to read the word 'fights' and think that the toothpaste cures bad breath, but it does not say that! All it says is that it fights it and that is not the same thing at all. One supermarket tells buyers, 'You are proud of your cooking, so shouldn't you buy the freshest food?' This one is very clever, because it tells buyers that they are good cooks. However, the ad never says that this supermarket has the freshest food! They just hope that you read the ad, you will feel good about what it says and remember the words 'freshest food' and then buy it in the supermarket. We must not fall for this kind of trick!

Public service advertisements

Not all ads play tricks on us though. PSAs use some of the same methods, but they are made to serve the public. PSAs are meant to teach us and help us lead better lives. You have probably seen or heard some of them yourself, like 'Yes to life, no to drugs' and 'Knowledge changes life'. These ads deal with large social issues. There are also PSAs that educate people about public service projects, such as Project Hope. All of these ads are meant to be helpful, and you can often learn a lot by following the advice they give. Try to remember: think about why you should do or buy the things the ad suggests. We all want to be smart about what we believe, so be smart about advertisements

According to the passage, which of the following can you most possibly watch on TV? A. You often play football with your friends after school. B. Your teacher has got a cold. C. A tiger in the city zoo has run out and hasn't been caught. D. The bike in front of your house is lost. Secondly, a news story has to be interesting and unusual. People don't want to read stories about everyday life. As a result, many stories are about some kind of danger and seem to be "bad" news. Many children use the Internet to get useful knowledge and information, and to relax in their free time. At the age of seven, while his friends were spending pocket money on things like candy and toys, Jose Adolfo was busy saving money for more essential purchases. To try to get his peers to do the same, the youngster from Arequipa, Peru came up with the innovative idea of an eco-bank, which allows kids of all ages to gain economic independence—while also helping the environment. Established in 2012, the Bartselana Student Bank is the world's first bank for kids. To open an account, kids have to bring in at least 5 kilograms of solid waste (paper or plastic) and establish a savings goal. Once accepted, all bank "partners" are required to deposit(存储) at least one additional kilogram of recyclables on a monthly basis and meet other requirements, such as attending financial education and environmental management workshops. The waste collected is sold to local recycling companies, who, thanks to Jose, pay a higher-than-market rate for everything brought in by Bartselana Student Bank members. The funds received are placed in the individual's account until his/her savings goal is reached. The account holder can then withdraw his/her money, or choose to leave it and continue to grow for a bigger target. "At the beginning, my teachers thought I was crazy," Jose recalls. "They did not understand that we are not the future of the country but its present. Luckily. I had the support of the school principal." By 2013, the bank had over 200 members who brought in one ton of recyclable waste. Today, the eco-bank, which now has the support of several local institutions, has ten educational centers. They are designed to teach the over 3,000 members both finance and environmental management. Castle Dale is a small town in central Utah. My grandpa's farm is a few miles to the north. I grew up there. Milking a cow, feeding the chickens and cutting firewood were daily routines. Grandpa had me carrying a broom to do snow cleaning when it was actually taller than I was. This was the work kids like me learned to do at a young age. I was tall, very tall at a really young age. My unusual height caused people to look, ask questions, laugh, tease, and sometimes even challenge me to fight. I was teased cruelly as a kid. It wasn't fair, I knew, but that was just the way it was. Luckily, I was taught at a very young age a very important lesson. I am different and that's Okay—I'm unique and I matter. No one could ever take that away from me. I knew this then, and I know this now. That alone helped me through the frustrations and heartaches of normal life. When I was in junior high school, I realized something else that helped me cope. Most teasing came from one of two places—people who were either jealous or ignorant (愚昧). I couldn't change the way they were, but I could change the way I felt. I was not going to feel bad because of their ignorance or jealousy. It wasn't worth it. Realizing this didn't stop them, or change the fact that these comments hurt. It did, however, give me a way to understand these people and deal with their treatment in a way that was okay for me. These things still happen today. It will probably happen the rest of my life. I will always be 7 feet, 6 inches (2.29 meters) tall. I wouldn't change that for anything. People will always look because it is not every day that you see someone that tall. I learned that at a young age and I now try to teach my own children that they are unique and they matter. That is the message I give to you. Regardless of your race, religion, background, or circumstances ... Being different is okay. (1)The author mentioned his hometown to show us _______. A. he is from an ordinary family B. his grandpa is strict with him C. he loves this lovely small town D. he had to do a lot of labor work (2)The author was often teased because _______. A. he grew up in a small town B. he was much taller than others C. he fought with people easily D. he didn't want people to watch him (3)What was the author's attitude towards being teased? A. He accepted the fact of being different and let it go. B. He felt angry failing to change others' opinions. C. He felt hurt hearing people's negative comments. D. He hated people's ignorance and jealousy. (4)Which of the following may best describe the theme of the passage? A. Everything comes to the man who waits. B. It is the first step that is troublesome. C. Speech is silver, silence is gold. D. Keep your head up. 【答案】(1)A

A Some people think only school children do not agree with their parents, however, it is not true. Communication is a problem for parents and children of all ages. If it's hard for you to communicate with your parents, don't worry about it. Here are some suggestions for you to bridge generation gap(代沟). Don't argue with your parents. Don't get to your parents when you are angry. Your parents probably won't consider your ideas if you are shouting at them You can't express(表达)yourself well if you are angry. Go to some place to cool off. Make sure you understand why you are unhappy. Then think about what you want to say to your parents. If you don't think you can speak to them at the moment, try writing a letter. Try to reach a compromise (和解). Perhaps you and your parents disagree(有分歧) on something. You can keep your disagreement and try your best to accept each other. Michael's mother didn't agree with him about buying a car. They argued over it, but finally they came to a compromise. Michael bought the car, but only drove it on certain days.
