Teaching procedures:

Step 1 warming up

Information Related to the Reading Passage People around the world treat time differently. In Canada and the United States, meetings are well organized and people get down to business quickly. People don't spend much time developing a relationship with clients. In contrast, Latin Americans have a more relaxed sense of time, often arriving to a meeting or an event one-half to one hour after the scheduled time. In Europe, people like to be punctual. Visitors are advised to be on time, or nearly on time, when invited to a party or a home dinner. Business relations are similar to those in North America. Appointments may be made weeks in advance. In the Middle East, business people may come one hour late to an appointment. Much time is spent in socializing and general conversations.

In China, Japan, Singapore or Indonesia, visitors are advised to be on time or even early for a meeting. However, In Malaysia, Thailand, Korea, or the Philippines, you can expect people to be late, especially for social events.

Step 2 pre-reading

1 Explanation of Difficult Sentences (Para. 2) Those traveling or doing business abroad should always find out the answer to this question. Analysis: Traveling or doing business abroad (= who travel or do business abroad) is a present participle clause used as the post-modifier

introducing

of those.

2. (Para. 3) It is also supposed etiquette to arrive a little late for a party, which I have never ever understood.

Analysis: Supposed is a past participle, used as an adjective here. Which introduces a nonrestrictive relative clause and which itself refers to the whole main clause.

Step 3 reading

Question: Are you punctual?

Posted July 2, 2010 By Lisa L.

Answer 1: This is a great cultural question. Those traveling or doing business abroad should always find out the answer to this question. I'm punctual in my work life. But I'm not punctual in my personal life by American standards. We, American Brazilians, are always late by American standards: if the party is at 8, everyone shows up at 10 and everyone, including the host, is happy that we are on time. Cheers! :)

Answer 2: It is good etiquette to be on time for an appointment. It is also supposed good etiquette to arrive a little late for a party, which I have never ever understood. I tend to be early for everything. And I consider it impolite to be otherwise. ;-)

Answer 3: ABSOLUTELY! I believe that showing up late for a date, appointment, class, etc. is an insult to the person(s) you are meeting. It seems to say:“My time is more important than yours.”:-| Answer 4: Not only am I “punctual”, I am always early for most events in my life. The secret is (and it really works!): I keep all the clocks (except my computer) in my life 10 minutes fast! ;-}

Answer 5: Yep — too much so. It really gets on my nerves. Even when I really try to be late, I am earlier. It is a terrible habit. Okay, I AM 50 minutes reading and practicing

late sometimes. The only time I am late is when I get lost, and then I am really late by an hour or so. But hey, we all have our mishaps, don't we? :-O

Answer 6: When dating, I always made sure I was on time. Once I had a girlfriend who was always late for every date. If the date was at 9 and it was a 45 minute trip for her, then she would arrive at 9:45. I liked her a lot, but could not stand the bad punctuality. :-e

Answer 7: I hate to be late and always plan on being at least 10 minutes early. However, in the Washington area, when a bridge or major highway shuts down, there may not be any way to get where you are going. So I would have to say that I am always early, except when I can't get there at all, in which case I will call as soon as I know I am going to be late. It doesn't happen often, but I really hate it when it does. :-/

Step 4grammar focus

Exercise on page 89-90

Write T / F accordingly.

Translate the following sentences into Chinese. Step 5 homework

新编实用英语综合教程1第四版课文翻译

新编实用英语综合教程1第四版课文翻译There is no perfect way for human beings to deal with cockroaches up to now. There is an instrument in Europe that can emit a specific frequency wave similar to that in a microwave oven, rapidly raise the blood temperature in the cockroach's body and instantly cause the cockroach to blow itself up. However, even if it is applied in such a wide range, it cannot completely eliminate the cockroach. Moreover, it can kill any organism containing water in the body and was banned several years ago. I do not recommend you to use any insecticide, which can only kill some cockroaches. It is an indisputable fact that cockroaches cannot be completely eliminated, but it can accelerate the evolution of cockroaches. The same insecticide may be used for one to two years, and cockroaches will be immunized against this insecticide by producing antibodies themselves. If you kill a limited number of cockroaches, the evolution of cockroaches will be accelerated permanently. Suggested methods are as follows: 1. Overcome your fear of cockroaches. 2. Use aggressive weapons to cause physical damage to cockroaches to death. (For example, newspapers, flyswatters.) 3. Clean the house and keep the house clean all over the world to minimize the living space of cockroaches. Finally, I give you advice: if you find a cockroach in the room, you think there are more than 200 cockroaches nearby. The number of cockroaches on the
